Awesome / The Avengers (2023)

Go To

Issue #1

  • The issue is a great showcase of the Avengers working together as a cohesive unit as they battle an alien robot attacking Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S.
    • T'Challa and Tony are in charge of evacuating civilians to safety while the rest of the team battles the robot. T'Challa asks for the senior engineer to come with him because he needs their help in defeating the robot. When the engineer in question expresses doubts they can help, T'Challa gives her a Rousing Speech most befitting of a hero and a king.
I understand your fear. I too am afflicted by fears. Of how my ancestors, the unbroken line of the Panther, judge my actions. But when your own children tell your story, what will they say about the day you were asked to be an Avenger?

Issue #2

  • Using the information given to them by Kang, the Avengers get to work saving 1000 lives in just 24 hours. And they succeed.
    • T'Challa single-handedly takes down a Hydra cell threatening to use a bioweapon in Mexico City.
Hydra Cell Leader: And when we release the spore anyway to show what happens when you mess with Hydra—
T'Challa (crashes through a window to knock down the leader): But tell me...Just what happens when you mess with the Avengers?
    • Thor prevents a fatal train crash in Central India.
    • Vision and Iron Man save a plane falling out of Dublin airspace.
    • Sam Wilson shows his worth as The Heart of the team. His mission doesn't involve fighting villains or stopping an out of control vehicle. Rather it involves him helping a tired and overworked truck driver who was predicted to crash into a bus, killing himself and 43 other people. As the driver needs to deliver medical supplies, Sam offers to drive the truck while he gets some much needed rest in the passenger seat.

Issue #3

  • Thor gives Idol Alabaster a brutal "Reason You Suck" Speech in Flowery Elizabethan English and makes it sound cool.
Thor: Ho! Is this a god I see before me? For I know the ways of gods. Worship is courted with blessings...or threats. Not stolen with psychic tricks.
Idol Alabaster: Give me your worship, little creature. Little supplicant.
Thor: So is it to be blessings, creature? Or threats? In either case: I say thee nay!

Issue #6

  • The ways in which each Avenger turns the tables on their respective Ashen Combine opponents shows why this team is called Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
    • Thor exploits Idol Alabaster's need for prayers. Since he cannot fight her without harming the citizens she has brainwashed into worshipping her, he uses his lightning powers to nonlethally incapacitate them. With her supplicants unconscious, they cannot worship Alabaster and she is vulnerable.
    • The Dead uses his powers to raise an army of the deceased against Scarlet Witch. She uses her own magic to teleport them from Sydney, Australia to Antarctica, which has much less corpses for him to use.
    • In the last issue, the Citysmith trapped Tony in a cube of concrete in the last issue. However, Tony reveals that he has integrated Ghost's phasing technology into his armor, allowing him to escape his prison and sucker punch the Citysmith. Even better, Tony's solution was pre-planned, while the other Avengers came up with their solutions on the fly.
    • Meridian Diadem restrains Vision with tentacles that neutralize his intangibility. He counters this by making his body as dense as plutonium and then downloads a sample of his creator Ultron's code into her system to incapacitate her. As Vision tells her, he has been programmed to be as cruel as she is, yet chooses to be a good person.
    • Carol's opponent is Lord Ennui whose "entropy field" is basically an insatiable void that draws in every attack thrown at him and breaks it down. How does Carol beat him? By using her own Energy Absorption ability to power herself up and then letting Lord Ennui absorb it, overwhelming him. Even better, this energy is the first thing Ennui has ever encountered that makes him feel something other than apathy.
Carol: You say you're an endless void. I say I'm power without limit. Let's see who flinches first.
Lord Ennui: So much...So much energy...Like...Like consuming a star...For the first time, I feel something! I feel...I feel everything...Thank you.
    • Rounding things up is T'Challa and Sam who break into the Impossible City and free it from the Ashen Combine's control. In gratitude, it decides to join the Avengers.

Issue #8

  • Vision and Scarlet Witch are facing off against the Twilight Court while the rest of the Avengers are trapped in a dream by Nightmare. Wanda finds a way to wake up Thor, who then takes shatters the barriers between his dream and the others.
Thor: My friends are some of the mightiest mortals ever assembled. But they are mortals. Like all mortals, they are at the mercy of their dreams. But I am a god. And what is a god if not a dream that mortals have ever been at the mercy of? Avengers...Assemble!
  • The Twilight Court's sorceress Mordred has the ability to unravel Wanda's spells. Wanda gets around this by casting multiple spells at once so that Mordred cannot unravel them all.
    • Wanda and Vision have to be recommended for standing their ground against the Twilight Court until their comrades were revived.
  • Nightmare appears before the still dreaming Avengers and offers to let them go if they admit defeat. All the Avengers refuse...except for Thor who simply laughs and gladly admits defeat, much to the surprise of both his teammates and Nightmare. The demon upholds his end of the bargain and the other Avengers are awakened, ready to battle the Twilight Court. It is proof that Thor has learned true humility from when he was humbled by being banished by Odin all those years ago and that he continues to strive to be worthy each and every day after regaining Mjolnir at the end of the War of the Realms.
