** Penny and Max dated in college. It was apparently pretty hard on her when he came out as gay, but they are best friends by the timeframe of the seriesseries, and in the Covid Charity Special "And The Pandemmy Goes To..." he literally offers to be her husband and they get [[MarriageOfConvenience married]] so she will no longer be a spinster.

Added DiffLines:

** Played for laughs in the Covid Special "And The Pandemmy Goes To..." as Penny and Max agree to a pseudo [[MarriageOfConvenience Lavender Marriage]] after Penny's fiancee dumps her on the Zoom call. Max offers to be Penny's husband, since she's been so desperate to no longer be a "spinster", and because they had made a pact that if a global pandemic had hit the world, they would get married. Penny accepts after Max makes it clear that their marriage won't be about sex, therefore they can still have sex with other men, but because they love each other, and Max states he doesn't love anyone more than he loves her. Dave, who is an ordained minister, marries them over the Zoom call.
