Few other characters -- possibly none other than Arch Riker -- know that his birth name was ''Merlin'' James Qwilleran. Book 22 reveals that it came from his mother being a fan of the King Arthur stories.
** Polly's real name is [[Theatre/AMidsummerNightsDream Hippolyta]], and she mentions that her "poor sister [[Theatre/{{Hamlet}} Ophelia]]" had a rough time of it in school. Her father was a Shakespearean devotee, and gave all of his children names from the plays.

His similarly-named siblings have all made much greater strides towards living up to their names than he has.
