Naruto appears dejected by this and says it makes sense as he's still a Genin and Kankuro reassures him that it's always the girls that moon over the cool guys that are the weakest. Of course, Naruto is doing some HeroicSelfDeprecation over still being a low rank Genin and thinks that makes him weak considering the fangirls were able to effortlessly knock him out of the way. If one looks at it another way however, one could also interpret it as Naruto feeling bad about himself because he doesn't feel like he's good enough to stand by Gaara's side as his friend considering how amazing and cool Gaara is considered by everyone as the Kazakage, and the fangirls clearly brushed him aside like he was a piece of trash. Considering his low self esteem tied to his lonely past of being ignored by the entire village the idea is not unlikely. This ties into the hand shaking scene later, where Naruto acts awkwardly and states he doesn't know how to act in these situations as he's not used to it. Gaara's using of his sand to lift Naruto's hand to shake hands with him could also be his way of affirming to Naruto he considers them close friends and equals.
** In Konoha Hiden Gaara worries himself over finding the perfect wedding present for Naruto and Hinata but his main priority seems to be whether it would make Naruto (Hinata isn't mentioned at all here) happy. Rock Lee says Gaara should probably expect to dance at the wedding and Naruto might join in.
