This actually has the opposite effect; in his new identity, Stocke forges bonds that he's willing to sacrifice his life to protect.
** Related to this is among Heiss' reasons for rejecting his role was because he didn't have anyone he was willing to give his life for. In the GoldenEnding, Heiss realizes he had someone all along: Stocke. He then proceeds to make his own soul worthy enough to be sacrificed in Stocke's place, therefore accepting the destiny he'd originally rejected.
