* PhysicalGod: He's an apprentice Supreme Kai from Universe 10, the gods of creation in the Dragon World. He is also ''much'' stronger than Shin, the Supreme Kais from Universe 7, and [[AdaptationalBadass in the anime]] can even stand up to Super Saiyan 2 Goku after he has been trained by Whis (in the manga, he's implied to be weaker than Super Saiyan 1 Goku). [[spoiler:[[TookALevelInBadass His future counterpart is even more powerful]] [[AdaptationalBadass in the anime]], being able to give Super Saiyan Blue Goku a good fight ''and'' he's an immortal. His future counterpart in the manga is weaker, being far weaker than [=SS2=] Trunks who's not tremendously stronger than the [=SS2s=] from the Buu arc, but he's still stronger than he was in the past ''and'' [[WeakButSkilled possesses useful abilities]] that his anime counterpart lacked such as teleportation and paralysis]].

* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: Zamasu is the first and only ''Dragon Ball'' antagonist to be a KnightTemplar, who believes what he is doing is for the greater good, in his own [[MoralMyopia distorted morality]]. He's also the first antagonist who didn't begin as a villain, but gradually [[JumpingOffTheSlipperySlope descended into darkness]] over the course of a season. He's also the antagonist who has the most lasting consequences to the story, [[spoiler:having TheMultiverse of a whole timeline wiped of life.]]
** He’s also the first villain that gets close to being a TragicVillain. He boils down to the divine equivalent of troubled youth. Gowasu seems to think he could have been saved if he (Gowasu) had been a better mentor. Similarly he’s the only villain that anyone actually mourns over.

** [[ZigZaggedTrope Zig-Zagged]]. While he's weaker than [[spoiler: Goku Black]] in both mediums, the manga gives him all of Kibito Kai's abilities like telekinesis, the [[HealingHands ability to heal others]], and the ability to paralyze the movements of others. He used these to easily freeze [[spoiler: Goku during their fight]]. At the same time, the manga portrays him as a far weaker fighter compared to the anime version, being taken down easily by Goku and resorting to his [[spoiler: immortality almost immediately]] whereas in the anime he can still fight and inconvenience [=SSB=] Goku in an 1-on-1 fight, and even hold down Goku and Trunks simultaneously. In fact, according to Goku, he's way weaker than even Super Saiyan 2 Trunks (who at this point is weaker than Goku's non-god-powered [=SS3=], and who a few years ago was still weaker than Dabura) and he gets overwhelmed by Super Saiyan God Goku after he used the [[spoiler: Evil Containment Wave, which was stated to have drained most of Goku's power ([[DangerousForbiddenTechnique the move is supposed to be fatal]])]].

** The manga version takes it to the next level when [[spoiler:they defuse. Turns out they ''can't'' do it all the way thanks to both of his components being basically the same person, so they end up as a weak, half-Zamasu half-Black abomination that even Mutated [=SS2=] Trunks (only about as powerful as a Buu arc [=SS3=] Goku and far weaker than even Black's base form) can cut them apart. Fortunately for them, this form doesn't last long, as he then turns back into Fused Zamasu and starts duplicating himself endlessly.]]

* FutureBadass: In the manga, Future Zamasu can trade blows with Super Saiyan Goku and easily defeat Shin, while the present timeline Zamasu is a comparative weakling who had trouble fighting Kibito. In the anime, Future Zamasu can fight against Super Saiyan Blue Goku on almost even footing. This is the same person whose present counterpart was overwhelmed by Super Saiyan 2 Goku when they first met.

** The manga version takes it to the next level when [[spoiler:they defuse. Turns out they ''can't'' do it all the way thanks to his immortality, so they end up a weak, half-Zamasu half-Black abomination that even Mutated [=SS2=] Trunks (only about as powerful as a Buu arc [=SS3=] and far weaker than even Black's base form) can cut apart. Fortunately for them, this form doesn't last long, as he then turns back into Fused Zamasu and starts duplicating himself endlessly.]]

* CurbstompCushion: Suffers this in the manga. [[spoiler:At first, he's capable of easily overwhelming Goku and Vegeta single-handedly, but finds himself hopelessly outmatched during his fight with Vegito and only gained the upper hand thanks to the fusion wearing off earlier than expected due to the power of Super Sayian Blue. Later he's capable of fighting Goku in his Completed Super Saiyan Blue state to a standstill (though he holds a slight advantage due to his immortality and the energy taking toll on Goku's body). Once he becomes Infinite Zamasu, he becomes strong enough to knock Goku around like a ragdoll.]]

* ForgotAboutHisPowers: In the manga, Fused Zamasu only uses his paralysis ability once in his fight with [[spoiler:CSSB Goku]], despite how extremely useful it is. He doesn't use it against Vegito either, though in that case it's presumably because the power gap was too wide for it to work anyway (cf. Nappa pulling a NoSell when Chaozu tried to use the same technique on him all the way back in the Saiyan arc). Anime Fused Zamasu uses very few of his abilities in general (preferring to just in the sky and shoot weak ki blasts at infinitely weaker foes), though in his case he's more explicitly holding the VillainBall and CherryTapping.

** In the anime, when Zamasu slices the Babarian in half, he has a [[MyGodWhatHaveIDone shocked, almost horrified expression]] on his face, though he smiled briefly before that. He is so ashamed that he doesn't try to defend himself when Gowasu tells him off, [[IgnoredEpiphany at least until later]]. His attack on the Babarian also come off as almost instinctual. In the manga, Zamasu not only purposely cut the Babarian in half, he did it with a SlasherSmile and seems shocked that Gowasu didn't approved of his actions. When Gowasu confronts him about this, Zamasu dismisses his concerns since 'that mortal was trash'. Later, [[spoiler: just before he tries to kill Gowasu]] he indirectly admits that his actions are evil, but they will [[UtopiaJustifiesTheMeans eventually lead to good]]. Manga Zamasu scoffs at the notion that anything he does is evil.

* AdaptationalHeroism: Downplayed but notable. In ''Xenoverse 2'', despite the Time Patroller tricking Zamasu into training them by pretending to be a supporter for his cause and kicking his ass with his own moves after Zamasu finds out and tries to murder them, one would think that a [[spoiler: [[GrandTheftMe similar situation as to what transpired between him and Goku]]]] would take place. But surprisingly, ''no''. Although he’s obviously upset by the colossal blow to his megalomaniacal ego, he surprisingly decides to let the matter go. [[spoiler: Considering how when Goku bested him [[AxCrazy he went completely off his fucking gourd]] and resulted in a GrandTheftMe with a side of mass murder]] it’s indeed quite a shocking event.

** Taken UpToEleven in ''Dragon Ball Fusions'' where Goku Black and Future Zamasu manage to summon even more Zamasus to join the fight (two more Zamasus, two more Goku Blacks, along with the Present Zamasu before he became [[spoiler:Goku Black]]), totaling an additional 5 Zamasus altogether.

* DisproportionateRetribution: When you look at it, the entirety of all the bad things in the Future Trunks Saga [[spoiler:happened [[UpToEleven because he wanted to get back at Goku for losing in a simple sparring match]] against him]]. Talk about a SoreLoser. It's even ''worse'' in the manga where [[spoiler:he never even ''meets'' Goku. He just sees his fight with Hit on [=GodTube=] and becomes furious at the idea of a mortal rising to the power of a god]].

* AGodAmI: Although he is literally a god, he takes this UpToEleven by believing himself a true god and the only one worthy of divine power since he's [[spoiler: an immortal. He even went as far as to murder all the other gods in every universe and declare himself as the supreme god]].

** A somewhat more self-controlled version compared to Goku Black and Future Zamasu, but it's obvious through the joy he takes in razing the environment around him as well as his sadistic enjoyment in toying with Goku and Vegeta that he's just as crazy as his predecessors. As the final battle wears on, this trait only [[UpToEleven increases and increases]] until he's a rambling screaming mess. [[spoiler:His final form is basically a LaughingMad engine of pure destruction.]]

* ItsAllAboutMe: To an even greater degree than his components. While he still cares about nothing but what ''he'' thinks is justice, he takes it a step forwards by declaring himself 'the brightly glowing sun in the sky which illuminates this world' and that his new world will be 'born of divinity, by divinity' (note, when saying this he's the ''only god left'', so it basically translates to 'born of Zamasu, by Zamasu'), making it clear he views the entire multiverse as existing solely for himself. And his manga counterpart is even ''[[UpToEleven worse]]'' with quotes like this:

* SanitySlippage: The longer the FinalBattle goes on, the more and more insane he becomes until his default expressions are a completely unhinged SlasherSmile or screaming in psychopathic fury. And when his physical body is destroyed and he becomes [[spoiler:a universe-spanning EldritchAbomination, this gets taken UpToEleven. Any trace of the dignified and poised Kai is completely gone, replaced by a LaughingMad monster whose only thought is to destroy everything in sight.]]
* SatanicArchetype: His components were already this, but he takes it UpToEleven by even invoking the whole '[[LightIsNotGood angel of light]]' motif, having an aura of heavenly light, and a HolyHalo. His claim that he's a TopGod solidifies it and [[spoiler: his mutated form makes him look completely demonic.]] Furthermore, [[spoiler:like Old Scratch, the moment he goes up against the ''true'' {{God}} of the setting, he [[CurbstompBattle doesn't stand a chance.]]]]

** He comes off as a colossal one, since he looks down at mortals for using violence to solve their problems instead of the knowledge given to them by the gods. Yet, he saw no problem killing an inhabitant of Planet Babari when he could have simply walked away, as Gowasu points out. He also disagrees with Gowasu about the [[GodIsFlawed gods being flawed]] and that they must also learn from their mistakes, yet he thinks Gowasu and the other Supreme Kais are wrong for not being more involved in mortal affairs, essentially saying that the gods are wrong on this subject. [[spoiler: Future Zamasu takes the hypocrisy further by telling Future Trunks that his hatred of mortals stems from their repeated misuse of the wisdom given to them by the gods. This is coming from the same person who used his great knowledge to destroy countless mortal races across the future timeline He also despises Goku for being mortal that has the nerve to challenge the gods. This is the ''same'' person who helped Goku Black (who's a god in a mortal shell) murder all the gods in the multiverse]]. By Episode 57, Present Zamasu [[spoiler: is willing to murder his own teacher to further his goals, the exact same type of behavior he looks down upon on mortals for]].

** In the anime, his motives go further than outright hating mortals for the crime being mortals, instead being cautious and weary of their actions. He is capable of astute observations and[[HypocriteHasAPoint explaining his beliefs in a manner that's not entirely wrong.]]

** Zamasu is this to Majin Buu. Both are characters who have multiple incarnations and forms (one of them being a fusion) and both were a serious threat to the universe. But, while Buu was always a EldritchAbomination who's various selves never got along, Zamasu was originally a normal Kai whose various selves actually get along and work together (in the anime at least).

** Originally the North Kai of U10, he's one to Goku's master King Kai.

** To Goku. Both are incredibly powerful fighters, both are prodigy’s that surpass their respective masters, but that's where the similarities end. Goku is a mortal who ended up attaining the powers of a god, while Zamasu is a god who took the form of a mortal. While Goku became stronger than his mentors due to his training, Zamasu kills his master to become the Supreme Kai and use the Super Dragon Balls to achieve [[CompleteImmortality immortality]] and [[GrandTheftMe steal Goku’s body]]. Their paths are also different, Goku came from a warrior race that was violent, aggressive and hellbent on conquering other planets and the universe, but Goku chose to protect his friends, his family, and the universe from dangerous threats, Zamasu on the other hand is a Kai, a race that was supposed to be protecting the universe and all living things but became evil due to his hatred for mortals and goes on to commit genocide killing his fellow Kais and plans to kill all mortals from the face of the universe.

* {{Expy}}: Being a KnightTemplar in a high position of power trying to commit mass genocide due to being a PoliticallyIncorrectVillain, all while believing himself to be a good person thanks to his god complex and humans to be an AlwaysChaoticEvil, Zamasu may very well be considered the ''Dragon Ball'' equivalent of Disney's [[WesternAnimation/TheHunchbackOfNotreDameDisney Judge Claude Frollo]].

* MoralEventHorizon: InUniverse - For Beerus, [[spoiler: Zamasu crosses it the moment he tried to murder Gowasu to take control of the Time Rings. Before that moment, Beerus was willing to give Zamasu the benefit of the doubt and not act until Zamasu killed Gowasu in cold blood and Whis rewind time to prevent the murder. Zamasu showing pride that his future counterpart has been killing mortals was just icing on the cake and Beerus promptly executes him]].

* AdaptationPersonalityChange: A {{Downplayed}} example. While both the anime and manga versions of Fused Zamasu are egoistical {{Jerkass God}}s who wants to reshape the multiverse in their image in the name of 'justice', the anime version of Fused Zamasu sees the [[spoiler:death of the gods]] as a [[NecessarilyEvil regrettable step towards peace]]. He also takes Goku's shell as his own so he can always remember the mistakes of the gods and even shed tears over all he's done. In the manga, Fused Zamasu doesn't give two craps about his fellow gods and happily wants to wipe out anyone that isn't himself and even views Gowasu and Shin as inferior gods. Now he's less about justice and more about becoming a multi-universal ruler. Another difference is that Manga Fused Zamasu fights on the ground and doesn't mind getting his hands dirty, using similarly defensive techniques like the anime version of Present Zamasu. Anime Fused Zamasu refuses to fight on the ground, choosing to hover above his opponents and hammers them with over-the-top energy attacks since mortals shouldn't touch a god. When he does directly confront the heroes it's because [[spoiler:he's having a mental and emotional breakdown]].

* MismatchedEyes: After his immortality fails to fully heal his right side, his right eye becomes purple with yellow sclera.

* {{Expy}}: Being a KnightTemplar in a high position of power trying to commit mass genocide due to being a PoliticallyIncorrectVillain, all while believing himself to be a good person thanks to his god complex and humans to be an AlwaysChaoticEvil, Zamasu may very well be considered the ''Dragon Ball'' equivalent of Disney's [[WesternAnimation/TheHunchbackOfNotreDame Judge Claude Frollo]].

* JerkassGod: He's firmly convinced that mortals are all stupid and brutal creatures who never learn from their mistakes and that the gods do nothing about those mistakes, to the extent that he openly suggests just [[FinalSolution wiping them all out]]. [[spoiler: Future Zamasu teams up with [[OmnicidalManiac Goku Black]] (another Zamasu) to do exactly that]]. Also, when [[spoiler:Present]] Zamasu raids [[spoiler:Zuno's temple, he threatens to kill Zuno if he didn't answer his questions about the Super Dragon Balls and Goku. He even tries to murder his own master for his Potara Earring so he can use the Time Ring and is only stopped due to Whis and Beerus' intervention]].

* VillainousBreakdown: All his incarnations suffer this. At first, he keeps his composure, but as the battles wear on, Zamasu drops all pretenses and becomes an utter monster who doesn't care about justice and order anymore, but about killing all life in existence that's not him, god and mortal. And when Future Zeno begins to erase him, he is reduced to screaming in horror.

* NotSoDifferent: As the fight goes on; his deteriorating mental state, increased size and bulk, deformed body, and increasingly brutish fighting style renders him barely distinguishable from the Babarian natives that he had hated so much. [[spoiler:He's even given similar towering camera shots as the Babarian Zamasu bisected when fighting Trunks right before being bisected just like he did to his first victim.]]

* KnightOfCerebus: In all of his incarnations, particularly Goku Black, Zamasu sticks out as a truly wicked villain. His arc is the only one in ''Super'' played as a straight tension-filled battle story,[[note]]Beerus [[AntiVillain wasn't really a villain]] and didn't even kill anyone on Earth; Freeza was a mass murderer, but was treated lightly by both Goku and Vegeta who could have easily defeated him at any point by teaming up; the U6 tournament competitors were simply an OpposingSportsTeam with no stakes regarding their victory, and aside from Hit were nothing compared to even the second-stringer protagonists; and the participants of the Tournament of Power were all effectively [[HeroAntagonist hero antagonists]] and, with the exceptions of the Pride Troopers and Kale/Kefla (plus Anilaza in the anime), also irrelevant power-wise compared to the protagonists.[[/note]] and whenever he appears, the mood shifts to an ominous tone.
