** One specific bit of subtle obfuscation is his handwriting. It's terribly spelled and is the TropeNamer for WantonCrueltyToTheCommonComma, but in Men at Arms he hands a letter to Vetinari to send to Vimes to get him to come back. Vetinari seems to think it's good enough to imitate ''his own'' writing, and Vimes never notices Carrot's very distinctive hand (although he questions if Vetinari did anything more than sign it). This is never brought up again, and he consistently makes careless spelling and punctuation mistakes even in letters home.

* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: Gives himself a title like this by accident to the dwarves. In Fifth Elephant, he jokingly adds his schoolboy title of Blackboard Monitor to his legitimate pedigree, which includes both a Knighthood and Dukedom. However, as dwarves consider writing sacred, the concept roughly translates to ''Destroyer of Words''. No points for guessing which title the dwarves use to hold him in awe for the rest of the series

* OutOfFocus: While Vimes was always the real star of the Watch books (see DecoyProtagonist above) Carrot was clearly the {{Deuteragonist}} in the earlier novels. His 'onscreen' role has diminished in more recent stories like ''Literature/{{Night Watch|Discworld}}'' or ''Literature/{{Snuff}}''.

* OpenSecret: Everyone ''knows'' he's the king, but funnily enough no-one can prove it. The villain of ''Men at Arms'' had all the documentation, which went mysteriously "missing" around the time of Cuddy's funeral, and in ''Feet of Clay'' the genealogies of Ankh-Morpork's royalty were incinerated by an angry Vimes. However, it's pretty clear that if Vetinari or Carrot really want to press the issue, they can prove it easily enough.

** In ''Literature/{{Thud}}'', in a rant brought on by frustration of Vimes questioning the good motives of Mr. Shine, Detritus points out that Vimes is bending over backwards to accomodate the dwarf traditionalists and community (though mainly because the alternative is snapping spectacularly) without putting ''nearly'' as much thought into dealing with the troll community, which makes him look quite hypocritical. * TrueCompanions: With Colon and Nobby. While Vimes has the absolute loyalty of every member of the Watch and is very close to his inner circle of Carrot, Angua and Detritus, he has a long history with those two that he doesn't have with anyone else. Colon had been a watchman for only slightly longer than Vimes, and Nobby joined later as the Night Watch was dwindling, and the two of them stuck with Vimes as he rose to the rank of Captain until it was only the three of them left. The three of them are the only remaining members of the Watch (aside from Reg Shoe) allowed to wear the lilac on the 25th of May, having fought in the final battle against the Unmentionables together.

Initially this made her very effective at tracking criminals, but this was compromised in ''The Truth'' when William De Worde figured out he could use ''stink bombs'' to mess with her sense of smell and make her lose him. In later books, it's shown that other criminals have unfortunately adopted this method to deal with her in a non-lethal matter.
