Some deleted Ass Pull entries I feel should be re-added. (removing the spoilers to simplify things)

  • Todoroki's battle with Dabi reaches an apparent conclusion with Todoroki defeating Dabi with his most powerful move. However, almost immediately after, Dabi powers up, having managed to copy Todoroki's techniques (which had taken months for him to master) with "intuition" and "observation". Considering Todoroki and Dabi's quirks work differently, with Todoroki being able to use his ice and fire sides in unison, it shouldn't even be possible for Dabi to copy Todoroki but he somehow does anyways. The fact he somehow still has enough stamina to outlast Todoroki and everyone else involved and be declared the winner just makes it worse. He then develops a brand new power, namely his mother's ice Quirk, which is explicitly different from a Quirk awakening (which he already underwent) and the only foreshadowing or explanation is Geten saying such a thing is "hysterical strength" a few pages prior. Once the fight winds down and the dust settles, Dabi has burned himself so badly that he has no skin left at all and is basically a walking corpse, but it turns out Dabi's sheer hatred of his family is still keeping him alive even then. No prior development suggested he could do anything like this, especially since his awakened state was directly stated to be fatal.
  • Bakugo's last stand against All For One and his subsequent death in the manga; not only does Edgeshot, a character who has barely any relevance to the story let alone Bakugo's character arc, end up sacrificing himself by turning himself into a new heart for Bakugo, a power that barely makes sense and was barely established as something possible by Edgeshot, he also grabs a soap bubble offscreen from Wash to clean Bakugo's wounds. Best Jeanist also helps by sewing together both Bakugo's muscle fibres and Edgeshot.
  • All For One is defeated by Endeavor, Hawks, Tokoyami, and Kyoka working together, but reveals he has an unstable copy of Rewind, which not only heals his injuries, but restores him to his prime. While it's explicitly a Deadly Upgrade and he's living on borrowed time, somehow continuously getting younger hasn't cost him any Quirks, even after he's rejuvenated to a mere teenager, and instead he and his quirks just keep growing stronger. The story doesn't even attempt to explain how that's possible.

The explanation given was

  • Dabi's Quirk shares the same origins as Shoto, even though he was an Uneven Hybrid. Edgeshot's sacrifice is attributed to his fighting style of infiltrating people's bodies (the bubble remaining intact through all the fighting is hard to buy, but it's not that important). The League took Rewind bullets from Overhaul, and later became associated with Garaki, who left it behind for AFO.

But the thing is (in order) Dabi's quirk had ALWAYS been explicitly only fire with no ice and a weakness to fire. So copying Shoto's "Channel fire and ice through my heart" should have either not worked or simply killed him. There was also no hint ever that he had ice powers or could somehow gain it. That and he also is stated multiple times to have a weak constitution and is currently little more than a charred skeleton yet he's still managed to survive heat that melted robots from a considerable distance. For Edgeshot's Heroic Sacrifice, there's a world of difference between his fighting style of stabbing people with his folded up body and turning himself into a functioning heart for someone whose heart exploded. For All For One using an unstable Rewind, the Ass Pull isn't that he had the bullet, but that he's explicitly growing more and more powerful and also explicitly not losing any quirks even though he's currently been de-aged to a small child and shouldn't have any stolen quirks anymore.

All is not lost. Not yet.

I had intended to add this to Unintentionally Unsympathetic:

  • Himiko Toga is meant to show how Quirk-influenced behavior can be rejected by societal standards, feeling oppressed because her idea of what's "normal" doesn't fit in. However, when her "normal" expression of love is violently stabbing people to death so she can suck their blood, her frustration with society can simply come off as whining that she's not allowed to kill people whenever she wants, which is rather flimsy compared to the more genuine hardships that her fellow League members faced.

But it was removed for this reason:

Her tragedy comes less from not being able to do whatever she wants, and more the fact that she could have easily been helped as a kid and prevent this, but was shunned for her Quirk and forced to act normal, even by a therapist. Her tragedy comes from how she is now a slave to her impulses, and thinks her "normal" is fine, when it isn't, nor is it even her true self at this point, rather it's an out of control version of herself spawned from a psychotic break.

I don't think this is relevant to the trope, which is that Toga is meant to be sympathetic (given Deku and Uraraka's recent behavior toward her), but often isn't actually seen that way.

Want to get an opinion. For the Jerks Are Worse Than Villains entry, Bakugo is mentioned to having a "small but vocal hatedom". The issue I have is that as noted elsewhere, he's one of the series's most biggest Base-Breaking Character. So can I tweak the wording by saying something like "A big reason why Katsuki is considered to be very divisive lies with this"?

That's not the first time I see Bakugo's hatedom downplayed like that. His fans like to pretend that he's universally loved and that his detractors are just a tiny minority.

There was an entry for Vocal Minority which I rebranded under Hatedumb because it was all unfounded negative opinions of MHA's protagonist, Izuku Midorya. I checked later to find that my edit was undone. Are we not allowed to file anything under "Hatedumb" anymore? Because suggesting that Izuku is a Villain Protagonist gives the impression that one has no idea what kind of character Izuku is.

The Signature Scene example is getting excessively long. Which examples should be trimmed or kept? Here are my takes:

  • Signature Scene: With a popular manga/anime like My Hero Academia, a lot of scenes in particular will stand out to fans of the series.
    • A young Midoriya, having just learned that he's Quirkless, tearfully asking his mother if it's still possible for him to become a hero, and receiving only an apologetic hug in response. Delete
    • All Might telling Midoriya "You can be a hero". Maybe
    • Midoriya using One For All to destroy the Zero Point Robot. Probably yes
    • All Might's battle with Nomu at USJ, especially the anime version, which expanded the fight from a mere slugfest into a brawl that sent them crashing all throughout the complex and had "You Say Run" blaring the whole time. Probably yes
    • Midoriya and Todoroki's battle in the U.A. Sports Festival with Midoriya finally getting Todoroki to use his fire Quirk. Probably no
    • Midoriya, Todoroki, and Ida fighting the hero killer Stain, and shortly after, Stain's "The Reason You Suck" Speech to all the "fake" heroes of the world. Delete
    • The first close up of Shigaraki's Nightmare Face when he met Midoriya. Delete
    • The finale to the fight between Midoriya and Muscular, particularly the "My Hero" capping it off. Maybe
    • All For One's first full appearance in the series, making quick work out of several pro heroes. Delete
    • All Might's "United States of Smash!!!" Followed by "You're next." Keep
    • Bakugo's fight with Midoriya after the Provisional License exams, particularly for the strong emotion involved in it. Delete
    • Midoriya, with help from Eri, fighting Overhaul with One For All at its full power. Shortly after, there's the League of Villains cutting off Overhaul's arms in retaliation for what he did to them. Probably yes for the first one, no for the second
    • Sir Nighteye dying from his wounds at the hospital while encouraging Midoriya and the others to still keep smiling. Delete
    • Class 1A's big music number, "Hero Too", at the UA Cultural Festival, complete with Eri finally smiling! Probably no
    • Endeavor announcing himself to the world as the new Number 1 Hero while secretly vowing to become a better person, and saying to the skeptical crowd, "Just watch me". Delete
    • And then there's Endeavor incinerating the High-End Nomu and saving the city, using "Plus Ultra Prominence Burn!!!" Delete
    • The League of Villains taking over the Meta Liberation Army and becoming the Paranormal Liberation Front. Delete
    • Twice's tragic death, with his last clone realizing he's a clone and reminiscing on how happy he was with the League of Villains before dying. Delete
    • Dabi revealing himself to be Toya Todoroki. Something that was long guessed by fans. Probably no
    • Midoriya leaving UA after finally telling his classmates about One For All, overlooking the city with a jaded look on his face, symbolizing the loss of his cheerful idealism for heroes and how things will never go back to being the same. Delete
    • Bakugo FINALLY apologizing for his cruel bullying and mistreatment of Midoriya, finally using his first name. Many of his detractors and even some of his fans had been waiting for this moment for a long time. Delete because it's so recent, but may be worth re-adding in the future

The blow entry is all over the place. It says something comes out of nowhere, references another media entirely, then brings up fan theories.

How is any of this relevant to Ass Pull?

In Chapter 210, a new piece of information is learned about One For All. While the fact that something was wrong with Midoriya's Quirk was mentioned before, nobody was expecting that development in an otherwise so straightforward and streamlined arc. [[spoiler:The fact that the development was, instead of more strength, Venom-like black death tendrils and some degree of psychological connection to All For One was not foreshadowed at all and everyone, both in and out of universe, was caught off guard. Theorists had a field day believing that this supports the theory that All For One is Midoriya's father.

The arcs were Broken Base at worst. But people for the most part liked them once completed. That said, they fall under Seasonal Rot because many found the anime's adaptations of the arcs to be underwhelming.

It's honestly not as bad as people have made it out to be. The complaints made me read the manga, and the drop in animation quality isn't that big. I'm calling Critical Backlash on this one. It's even mentioned under Misblamed that the anime had a more detailed version of Mirio vs Overhaul.

The drop in animation quality is more of a reference to the quality of the previous seasons. And less about JUST Mirio's battle with Chisaki. I think Mirio's little slideshow just didn't help things. There were already talks about how season four wasn't "feeling" the same. People WERE noticing the drop in art direction. But when they saw that slideshow... in what's supposed to be a climactic moment in an ANIMATED medium... they went nuts.

Back in the manga's early days, the most popular gay ships were 1. Todo Deku; 2. Bak U Deku; 3. Baku Kiri, right now, the order is 1. Baku Deku, 2. Baku Kiri and 3. Todo Deku.

I am using the fact that this is the order of amount of fics per ship on AO 3

This was added as an entry in Base-Breaking Character:

  • While Izuku still has some fans, it's clear that his popularity has fallen ever since the First Popularity Post, with many people starting to see him as a Vanilla Protagonist and prefering Bakugo or Todoroki for the main role. The former for having an amazing Character Development and the latter for his sad Back Story.

I think that it looks like someone is just using a trope to complain (the same user that added this added the Vanilla Protagonist entry that was deleted for being complaint), but does Izuku make the cut to Base Breaker? Honestly, I've not seen enough detractors of him to think so.

I don't think Deku has that many haters, especially not if we only count people inside the fanbase (which is what the "base" part of Base-Breaking Character stands for). The example also fails to explain the position of people who do like him. This is textbook complaining.

Someone made another post on Midoriya:

  • Midoriya has become somewhat divisive as the series has gone on. His fans like him for being a brave and compassionate young hero with more than a few realistic flaws- most obviously his reckless and self-destructive fighting style early on, but also his severe self-worth issues. His detractors criticize him for being a Vanilla Protagonist with a relatively straightforward goal of being the best hero and not much development over the course of the series.

I am not quite sure whether Midoriya breaks the base yet.

If we're watering down Base-Breaking Character to "some people like him more than others" then it basically loses all meaning. And readding (even a reworded) entry is borderline edit warring, especially since the removal said taking it to discussion.

Though in fairness, this isn't the discussion page for the one they're talking about so it's a bit confusing (why wasn't this made on the correct page, anyway?)

What is Seasonal Rot? Seasonal Rot goes on a lot longer than what the Provisional arc was (which honestly fits 'tough act to follow' far more than Seasonal Rot now that I think on it). Seasonal Rot stretches entire seasons of animated material [For example Code Geass's second season, the first two parts of Pokemon Johto and the last two parts of Pokemon Unova, the stuff after the Dark Signers and before Ark Cradle in Yu Gi Oh 5D's, etc.

Provisonal would be seasonal rot if it was followed up by a lot of badly recieved arcs, or a noticeable downgrade all after them.

I was wondering if I could add the "Mineta hate" topic to the Broken Base page of BNHA. Mineta obviously does have a big Scrappy status, but he also has fans that both admire his few awesome moments, and believe that some gags of his are Actually Pretty Funny. I also seen some that have gotten tired on the amount of hate he gets on certain sites like AO 3 and Tumblr (even on You Tube, one hate-filled rant video on Mineta by Dorkly had plenty of people defending the character.)

It seems to fulfill all 4 requirements, but I'm not sure if I should do it now, or wait until the manga gives Mineta a scene that will bring his popularity up; what do you guys think?

  • Ass Pull: How some feel about the Midoriya vs. Shinsou match during the U.A. Sports Festival Arc. The reason being is that Midoriya's able to defeat Shinsou's brainwashing Quirk due to the former's Quirk suddenly kicking in to allow for Midoriya to hurt himself, which broke Shinsou's mind control. This is lampshaded after All Might gives the explanation:
Midoriya: That explanation's not satisfying at all, though... All Might: Don't get too hung up about it!

I seriously don't get how people can even try to justify this. Midoriya being saved at the last second by the previous One For All users taking action within himself to help Midoriya break free from Shinsou's mind-control came completely out of nowhere. It comes off like a plot-point that the author suddenly shoehorned in there just to make sure that Midoriya doesn't lose. There was never any evidence beforehand (that I know of) that would have hinted at Midoriya hearing, or receiving help, from the past One For All users to allow for such a case to happen.

It's true that the author has gone to some lengths in later chapters trying to explain why Midoriya has now started to communicate with the past One For All users, but that still doesn't justify how this originally came about during the Shinsou match. The lead-up to the chapter where Midoriya pulls the mind-control break still offers nothing. Therefore, it's an Asspull.

I am a little weirded out by these entries. I have no doubt that Midoriya counts as this trope, but as far as I know, I'm not sure whether these actually count, since Bakugou's most all consuming ships are Bakugou/Uraraka and Bakugou/Kirishima, I don't see as much of the others. All Might is also a maybe, but I'm not sure whether he should be there, since not many of his ships have a ntable following aside from with Aizawa and Inko. Jirou seems the most shoehorned, as most of the time she is just shipped with Yaoyorozu and Kaminari.

Endeavor, Nighteye, Shigaraki, and Stain are all varying degrees of obsessed w AM. Also, considering he, Jirou, and Bakugou are listed in Midoriyas ship entry, the opposite should be true. The movie and Illegals give lots of focus to his relationships w Shield and Tsukauchi, and AM/Shield gets at least as much focus as Midoriya/Melissa. Considering general assumption was that he was in love w Nana before their Mother/son relationship was revealed, that makes some sense too. Present Mic appears in a good amount of OT3 stuff going off the ymmv entry, and Midnight is slightly hinted in the Joint Arc. On Archiveofourown various Bakugou ships seem to be the most numerous (w Uraraka actually having the least of the first four on the entry) and there are def more entries w characters like Camie, Yaoyorozu, and Kaminari (in O T3s w Kirishima) than Deku has w Mirio or Mei for instance. IDK as much about Jirou fanworks, but she definitely has lots of focus compared to her in-universe storylines and surprisingly freq works w characters like Bakugou and Todoroki.

Okay, I don't want to start an edit war, so let's resolve this here. I think we should delete this entry;

Because the link it provides between the in-series event and the real world event seems very tenuous. This wasn't a joke where All Might talked about a bad movie being made or anything like that. To my knowledge, that line was about 'toilet paper', which has nothing to do with filmmaking of any quality.

A "funny aneurysm" moment is when a scene, joke, or offhand line that was originally meant to be funny or lighthearted becomes cringeworthy due to the unfortunate and/or traumatic events in future installments/episodes of a work or in real life.

I fully agree that this example is misuse since the line doesn't actually become cringeworthy after the movie's announcement. The example basically sounds like an excuse to complaing about the movie's very existence.

I think we need to Add Stain's Ideology to Broken Base. I see a constant divide over whether Stain was absolutely right in his beliefs, if he's an nutjob with too high standards, and if he is partially right and partially wrong.

Those for his ideology tend to cite the constant competition for hero rankings, some of the actions heroes may do in their quest (such as Endeavor), and that the narrative seems to support him too with both Iida and Midoriya acknowledging he made decent points.

Those against it cite that as Hero Work is a legitimate job it isn't wrong to expect a source of income, that his own standards are so impossibly high no one short of All Might and those trying to emulate him like Midoriya could meet them, and that he comes across as a Hypocrite when both his life as Stendhal embodied everything he hates and his Villainous Breakdown occurring when Iida tried to acknowledge his flaws only for Stain to reject the Iida could change.

Those in the middle think that while he is right in that certain aspects of the Hero World are in desperate need of an overhaul such the Ranking System, citing that All Might's retirement nearly destabilized society as their Number 1 Hero had suddenly retired, but also cite his nigh impossible standards and the idea that expecting income is wrong as where his ideology starts to fail, citing Uraraka as an example as while she wants to be a Hero mainly for the money, its to help her family and she does genuinely want to help people.

  • Base-Breaking Character
    • Eri. While she is, for the most part, loved by the fandom due to being an adorable Woobie, there are others bothered by how she acts as Midoriya's primary motivation in the story for both the Hassaikai and Cultural Festival Arcs, despite spending most of the story offscreen. Her Quirk is another issue entirely, with many worried it could potentially become a story breaking power, and allow consequences to be literally undone. Her being adopted by the teachers of U.A. is also a source of annoyance, because they already have quite a lot to deal with without having to worry about a small child was well, and her appearances are starting to slow down the narrative.

Okay, I actually think Eri is a valid and legitimate case of a Base-Breaking Character. The problem is that this entry is written in a way that is very clearly in favor of her detractors with just a token "but some people like her" at the beginning. Any suggestions on how to rewrite it?

"Her Quirk is another issue entirely, with many worried it could potentially become a story breaking power, and allow consequences to be literally undone." Well, she hasn't used her Quirk at all since the end of the Hassaikai arc. This seems to violate Speculative Troping, so that part could be removed.

What do you guys think of these additions:

  • Base Breaker:
    • Some fans like Mitsuki, Bakugou's mother, but a lot of fans were not amused by her Victim Blaming of her son, especially considering neither she or Masaru were shown to be worried or concerned about Bakugou whatsoever when he was kidnapped and it's obvious Mitsuki telling Bakugou it was "his fault" for being kidnapped by supervillains has not done anything to help Bakugou's mental state and her smacking him in the head in front of his teachers being treated as funny makes her look like a huge Jerkass.
    • Mirio, mostly in Japan, which caused him to rank in 41st place in the 3rd popularity pool (bellow even Mineta). A lot of people dislike him for being too perfect, bordering on Canon Sue, as well as his entire presence being basically dedicated to undermine Midoriya and his efforts by showcasing someone much more worthy of the One For All. Others, specially in the West, consider him amusing, funny and enjoy his Big Brother Mentor relationship with Midoriya, feeling that he is meant as another inspiration to him, rather than just a blow to his self esteem, which caused him to be an Ensemble Dark Horse.

And

  • The Scrappy
    • Endeavor is not well liked either, understandably so as he is an Abusive Parent, threw his wife into a mental institution and is an overall jealous, aggressive jerk.

Mitsuki has only shown up in one chapter (from what I remember). She's way too minor to mention here. Furthermore, her entry is blatantly written in a way that firmly sides with her detractors, and a good Base-Breaking Character entry should present both sides with as equal fairness as possible.

Mirio is ADORED in the West. I've only seen like three people in the entire English community who don't like him. Popularity polls also aren't a good indicator of fan hatred, just that they might not be everyone's absolute favorite character.

Endeavor is a clear case of Base Breaking Character and not Scrappy.

Mitsuki is way too minor a character to truly split the fandom in half. Her entry is pretty much entirely complaining, with only a token "but some fans like her" to try and justify putting her there. The only thing I've ever seen people say about her is that they find her design attractive.

Mirio sounds like Germans Love David Hasselhoff. I've only ever seen fans praise him, though I frequent English-speaking forums so I can't comment on how he's received in Japan.

Endeavor is a Hate Sink. His abusive tendencies are not meant to make him sympathetic, so unless there are other reasons why he's hated he doesn't qualify as The Scrappy.

These seem pretty suspect to me.

  • Base-Breaking Character
    • Mirio, mostly in Japan, which caused him to rank in 41st place in the 3rd popularity pool (bellow even Mineta). A lot of people dislike him for being too perfect, bordering on Canon Sue, as well as his entire presence being basically dedicated to undermine Izuku and his efforts by showcasing someone much more worthy of the One For All. Others, specially in the West, consider him amusing, funny and enjoy his Big Brother Mentor relationship with Izuku, feeling that he is meant as another inspiration to him, rather than just a blow to his self esteem, which caused him to be an Ensemble Dark Horse.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff:
    • Mirio is much more warmly received by the western fandom than the eastern one.

Is there any evidence that Mirio is hated in Japan? Sure he didn't rank well in the latest poll, but "not-favorited" and "hated" are two different things. And when did the voting begin? It's possible that the voting period occurred before his best moments happened.

And even if he is unpopular in Japan, he's still really popular in the west. Sure there are a couple of people who don't like him, but that's a clear minority. I think that alone keeps him out of Base-Breaking Character

Darkhorse, unlike most examples of leather-pants we haven't seen them do anything villainous, more Anti-Villain like, such as stealing from a store known for unsafe/faulty products. They are popular characters without drastic character changes like Heel–Face Turn 's, that Leather-Pants examples usually involve.

This was just added under Broken Base (along with another example that I cut and gave an edit reason for)

  • The Remedial Course arc has recieved this for multiple reasons. Some fans found it to be a welcome breather from the emotional and lengthly Internship Arc, while others believed that it was ill-timed and that it resulted in severe Mood Whiplash.

Frankly, I have NEVER seen anyone complain about the Remedial Course arc. And even if they did, Broken Base is about sustained, vicious, and divisive arguements. Even if there are people that don't like it, I can't imagine anyone hating it like some people do with the Overhaul arc.

It also ended just today. Of course people are discussing it a lot, it's the newest chapter. A Broken Base is a sustained conflict, meaning that we need a few months at least to make sure it's actually divisive and not just today's hot topic.

Actually, while we're on the subject of Broken Base, has it been long enough for the Internship arc to count as a sustained conflict? The last chapter came out December 4th 2017. I'm still seeing split opinions about it, but is 1.5 months enough time?

Bakugo is listed on CreatorsPet.Anime, but not here. I'm pretty sure he doesn't qualify, considering how he's a Base-Breaking Character rather than The Scrappy (which the example's wording itself points out), he doesn't get excessive Character Focus, and isn't shilled as he has several flaws which are regularly pointed out to him.

Any counter-arguments to my position? Should he be cut from that page, or should Creator's Pet be added to this one?

I don't think he qualifies. He has too many fans, there's nothing indicating that he's the author's favorite (as far as I'm aware), he's giving the appropriate amount of character focus for a rival character. The only area I think he qualifies is character shilling, but 1 out of 4 isn't enough to make him a creators pet.

I say cut that entry.

Zuxtron (On A Trope Odyssey)

I removed Bakugo from Creator's Pet since he IS one of the most popular characters from the show, getting first place in most of the popularity polls, which disqualifies him from being The Scrappy and in turn from being a Creator's Pet.

I don't think Midoriya is a base breaker. Most of the vocal criticism around him lately is just over him being "mishandled" in the most recent arc.

Not sure about Shigaraki though. I haven't seen anyone who outright "hates" him, but I've seen ton of people who think he's an underwhelming and unthreatening villain. It depends on whether or not a character can qualify as a Base Breaking Character by being "boring."

I'd also like to suggest cutting Mrs. Todoroki. She's pretty much a background character that nobody really feels strongly about. She fails the "little to no middle ground" criteria.

Midoriya really isn't a Base Breaker honestly. The example is complaining about Aesop Amnesia about his use of his quirk and feelings of inadequacy, but thats not because Midoriya always thinks that. Other people put him into situations where he had to use his Quirk at a dangerous level, while others compare to All Might constantly. Seems like a Single-Issue Wonk.
