This page seems to have decayed badly, with many obsolete points and some that are simply wrong. Besides including a lot of spoilers, it discusses some things in more detail than needed for trope appreciation. (They do have their own wiki!) Something where I'm not sure of local usage is that it includes folders for alphabet ranges (e.g. A to F) which then include folders for the individual letters. Is this the proper way to handle Very Long trope lists?
Edited by MentalMouse42What happened to the Main/ namespace for this article? I swear; there WAS one before! Ruined Forever!
Hide / Show RepliesCut. We don't do these for works anymore.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanBecause they're pointless and clog up the system.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them. And they encourage bad wicking.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanNo it didn't. You still can link to the page.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanNot anymore… And there's still the dreaded [[Analysis/Terraria]].
Also, is it just me or does the whole description need to be massively rewritten? There seems to be way too much specific or esoteric information listed and I'm sure a lot of stuff can be cut-out completely or heavily summarized. There's also lots of out-of-date or obsolete info. For example, is all the stuff in the description about "Classic" mode and all that still relevant? It's been a few years.
I dunno, consider this page from the viewpoint of someone not super familiar with Minecraft. I can understand having a lot of detailed and esoteric info in the trope example list, but not right up front in the description.
I'd go ahead and start editing it myself but I didn't want to step on any toes.
Hide / Show RepliesYeah, that seems to me a bit too detailed.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWelp, pulled the trigger. Rewrote the whole intro. Hopefully no feathers are ruffled.
Should we add Drinking Game as one of the sub pages? Minecraft has a lot of Drinking Game potential.
I think we should add a recap page. I already had this idea last week or earlier to describe important landmarks in history and hopefully enlighten the outdated examples, but I think now more than ever we need information describing what's happening to Minecraft. Top priority with it should be to mark the day Microsoft bought the game.
H.B. Ward Hide / Show RepliesRecap/ is for plot recaps. Minecraft does not have a plot. So no, we don't need a Recap/ page.
If you want to write a history of Minecraft, please go elsewhere. The wiki is only tangentially interested in behind-the-scenes stuff and it is not at all interested in soapboxing.
Let's just say and leave it at that.does anyone else think it would be a good idea to add adventure maps? I'm thinking they could be included under fanfic recs or something. Any ideas on this?
Hide / Show RepliesThat's definitely a good idea! I suggest a sub page of user created maps and possibly support for Darthwiki/sugarwiki tropes. Because some Minecraft maps are absolutely awful. I currently plan on making a Game Mods subpage, and I know that works pages are a free launch, but I actually do not know how to physically create it. Do you know any guides?
H.B. WardIf "adventure maps" here means some fan-created accessory to the game, FanficRecs.Minecraft would be the place for recommending them. Make sure you use the formatting for these articles in the process.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDifficult, but Awesome: I removed the bow because, by this point, it's just a bow. It's not particularly awesome or, indeed, difficult, by the standards of any modern game.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I'm really dubious about the current quote at top. It doesn't say a thing about the game except that "it's addictive and leaves you to your own devices", and only the latter point is really germane.
Hide / Show RepliesWe could use one of the menu texts instead.
"Less addictive than TV Tropes!" would be appropriate.
Borne By StormsHas anyone else had DREAMS about Minecraft? One I had was of a 'new addition' to Minecraft, the Enderspider. They were like wolves, except they looked like a cross between the Endermen and Cave Spiders. Then suddenly at the end of the dream, I saw a flaming Creeper head (the fire was blue) against a carpet on the wall. I'm pretty sure that was inspired by a Machinima video showing a Creeper drink.
I am not the first time to the first time and the sender and the first thing is a few months ago Hide / Show RepliesI had a dream there was a pre-release of 1.8 (Before the actual pre-release came out) and the spiders now drop blocks that spawn a mob that is actually the sheep with the spider's model on it. It looked creepier than it sounds.
I've dreamt in it before; can't remember exactly what it was about though
Borne By StormsAlright, that picture is just way too old. Alpha? Seriously? Full Minecraft has been out by now.
Hide / Show RepliesWell, we do have the cover art of the Xbox 360 edition. If we need to, we could always use a cropped version of that.
Edited by 13thDeicideIt's old, but the visuals of the game, which that shows, haven't really changed. And the chat is amusing.
But the picture uses a texture pack, so it doesn't show what Minecraft actually looks like. Its inaccurate.
I think a picture change would be acceptable, for the reasons given
Borne By StormsAwesome, but Impractical, Awesome Yet Practical, Boring, but Practical... at some point are going to have every block and item in the game listed in one of these tropes? We need to either trim it down to archetypal examples or cut the whole mess before it takes over the article.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Pulled:
- Recursive Reality:
- This mod shows a game of Minecraft being displayed on a giant screen... inside a game of Minecraft. You can also use redstone circuits to create a computer inside your computer, though the clock speed leaves something to be desired.
- Also, on a smaller scale, if you totally fill it up, you can fit 432 wooden chests inside one. Empty ones, mind.
Not the trope.
- Diamond equipment is difficult to craft thanks to the rarity of the materials. Diamond tools are fairly practical due to their high durability, but diamond armor is something you will rarely craft, due to scarcity of materials and the fact that it's not that much more durable than iron.
Not really applicable with the repair update.
- Who Forgot The Lights?: Intentional example. The creator wants to make sure that you don't wander off too much in the night or in caves so there is no Hollywood Darkness for you. You'll need to make torches to light up an area so you can see, and to keep monsters from spawning.
- As of Beta 1.8 nighttime light levels more closely resemble an actual moonlit night...caves and such are still dark, however. There's also a brightness slider that takes it from "Moonlit night" to "Night vision with less green" and makes caves bright enough to determine whether that bouncing shape is a creeper or a zombie without squinting at the screen.
Things what used to be in the game but what got removed are things what isn't a trope anymore, as I understand it.
... Probably some other things that I forgot to mention?
she her hers hOI!!! i'm tempeShould the Ender Dragon on the character page still be under spoilers at this point? Most of the tropes listed for it, even its own name, is all marked with a spoiler tag. The dragon doesn't even have anything spoiler worthy in the game.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.Should we change the picture? It's... kind of lame.
Hide / Show RepliesSure. We need a iconic image, like the drawing of a person with a Oh Crap face and a Creeper behind him
I like it. The only problems are that it only shows the building in Minecraft. Also, it was made in Alpha.
I am not the first time to the first time and the sender and the first thing is a few months agoWhy was the Take That entry removed? Where else could it be if there isnt even a Notch page to place it?
Can we add a seperate page for individual mods?
Me and my friend's collaborative webcomic: Forged Men Hide / Show RepliesI strongly agree to this. Can we PLEASE not let the "Game Mod" entry get too large? As it stands there's no reason why that one entry couldn't entirely dwarf the rest of the main article. Not to mention that there's the possibility (and it's already been seen) that people will just use this to advertise their mods, and given the existence of things like adfly... We aren't a place to sell things, we just discuss and have fun talking about our favorite pieces of fiction.
Specialty: Laser Guided Spellchecks on blatant misspellings. No that's not a trope. Can we please take some stuff off the High Octane Nightmare Fuel page and put it into a Accidental Nightmare Fuel page, or remove some of it all together. I mean, seriously, most of the content is Accidental Nightmare Fuel, and some of it is found to be scary by the poster of the example and no-one else.
Like this entry. Totally High Octane: Dungeons. first of all, they are made of Cobblestone and Moss Stone, Secondly they have a Mob Spawner inside which "Has a 50% chance to be Zombies, a 25% chance to be Skeletons and a 25% chance to be Spiders." and lastly, they are the only way to get Moss Stone, Saddles and Cocoa Beans without modding.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMWould Silverfish count more as Wall Master or Chest Monster? They DO hide as scenery like Wall Master, but they still share characteristics with Chest Monster.
Specialty: Laser Guided Spellchecks on blatant misspellings. No that's not a trope. Hide / Show RepliesI would say Wall Master because they hide in blocks and appear when said blocks are broken or if a Silverfish is killed and its death summon other Silverfish. Chest Monster is a monster disguised as something helpful that attacks the player when triggered.
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.Mind discussing about the End Poem?? its a take that against the people who insisted in having Minecraft with storyline or meaning?? did they just told the people that the meaning of the game is just up our imagination in the most bizzarre way?
I Don't think that Minecraft is anywhere near Nintendo Hard. 3 of the 5 enemies die in sunlight, Creepers can be prevented by making walls out of cobblestone and heading for high ground when leaving the home. I'm removing that part.
Edited by fljared Additional Unknown Hide / Show RepliesI concur. The player is not forced to engage these hostile mobs if they play carefully, and still can build quite effectively while avoiding combat.
What should be done about the Aether mod's tropes? Should we make a page for them or not do anything about it?
Hide / Show RepliesSince it's not part of the official game it probably shouldn't be part of the Minecraft page.
I thought so too, but you just get the urge to add tropes for random things like that.
I think it should have its own small page. Other mods have their own pages, and this one is especially prominent.
Me and my friend's collaborative webcomic: Forged MenI'm going to stick with the "Mod-specific tropes don't apply on this page" and edit out that last edit about the Werewolf in the Mo Creatures mod.
Specialty: Laser Guided Spellchecks on blatant misspellings. No that's not a trope.I feel the category "Game Breaking Bug" doesn't really apply to a game in Beta let alone references to when the game was in Alpha or pre-Alpha. Should the category be deleted or delete out of date bugs?
Hide / Show RepliesI felt so as well, so changed it. The "He IS. You're doing it!" Is from my favorite .sig file from the Minecraft forums. Maybe it'll help.
What's this thing about the ghast coming from a creepypasta? The wiki doesn't say anything about it.
I wonder what's for dinner? Hide / Show RepliesThe Creepypasta did not create the ghasts, it is just a fan theory. Maybe that part could be taken out.
Wow, late response.
It's mentioned that you get the later versions of the game free when you buy Beta, but as far as I know, that was only true with the Alpha version. Has new information come out, or was that just an error left over from when it was describing Alpha?
Hide / Show RepliesIf you go to minecraft.com and click Buy Now on the top right it says:
"When minecraft is finished, it will sell for 20EUR. If you pre-puurchase now during beta, you pay just 14.95EUR! You will also get the full version when it comes out."
IIRC, people who bought the game while it was in Alpha will get DLC for free where as everyone else will have to pay for it.
Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!I think the Minecraft page needs a fanfic rec since their happens to be some fanfics out there.
I'm considering adding a That One Cave entry to this page. Who hasn't suddenly faced three levels of unlit cave, one of which is a pit of doom being filled with water as zombies drop upon you from the top level?
Edited by Crassirus Hide / Show RepliesThis has happened to enough people in some variation that it could work.
Who watches the watchmen? Are Spiders really Demonic Spiders? They're barely above Zombies in terms of actual combat capabilities. The main issue they seem to create is that you have to build open-roof structures somewhat differently to keep them from bothering you. I'm suspicious that their inclusion is at least partially based on a literal interpretation of the trope title.
Text I feel is necessary to append to every post. Hide / Show RepliesThey are worse then zombies because they lunge and can attack under blocks. In addition the damn skeletons can ride on their backs. Plus they can climb. And like the creepers are not vulnerable to sunlight.
Who watches the watchmen?Somebody edited in "The Invisible" under the Urban Legend of Zelda article here. I've never heard of it. Can anyone provide a link to the source?
Specialty: Laser Guided Spellchecks on blatant misspellings. No that's not a trope. Hide / Show RepliesThis is about all there is related to it: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1020&t=175534&sid=1c7630a2680a4720c480ca275c78cca2
Honestly, it sounds more like someone trying and failing to recreate the whole Herobrine meme.
I have made the character page, but it needs pictures, more tropes and some dead links need fixing. It has all the good and bad mobs, plus the player character.
I hope I've helped significantly with this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMMagcargo Man Do you think that there should be a character page, for the mobs. For example, Creepers would have: Ensemble Darkhorse, Made of Explodium and Demonic Spider.
Does anyone agree?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyM Hide / Show RepliesI don't know how to make a character page.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8yAjWvAqyMIn the link, where it says "Main/Minecraft", change that to "Characters/Minecraft" and you can start a new entry.
Edited by SonikFan112 Batman: Arkham City: Best game ever, or best game ever?Someone needs to add "Guide Dang It" to this topic. I'm doing a usability test of Minecraft for a graduate class, and I've had had literally zero test subjects get past building a workbench/Crafting Table without looking at the walkthrough (which isn't allowed during the test) or asking for help from one of the test moderators. Until we changed the level of difficulty to Peaceful, every test subject got killed by monsters because they didn't know how to make torches.
I wonder how many things in this game have Violation of Common Sense.
Edited by artman40Wasn't there some sort of official Troper Server?
Hide / Show RepliesYeah. Check the discussion thread on the forums.
UN JOUR JE SERAI DE RETOUR PRÈS DE TOIIs it worth adding entries about Mods? I mean we have a Game Mod entry now, but with all the mods out there, there's a real risk of a flood of entries that have nothing to do with the vanilla game.
Specialty: Laser Guided Spellchecks on blatant misspellings. No that's not a trope. Hide / Show RepliesBump. I edited the Game Mod entry to prevent the possibility of a flood of mod-related tropes. If not prevent a flood, then just give reason for cleaning any up.
Specialty: Laser Guided Spellchecks on blatant misspellings. No that's not a trope.a troper by the name of "dancnbna" just deleted a huge chunk of entries. The only reasoning provided was "I thank that thing at the top". Can anyone explain exactly what this is referring to and exactly why it justifies such a huge deletion?
Edited by JProllz Specialty: Laser Guided Spellchecks on blatant misspellings. No that's not a trope. Hide / Show RepliesIt's part of a wiki-wide movement to shift all official YMMV tropes and examples to a work's YMMV sub-page. The examples were just moved to behind the scales button at the top of the entry.
Clay's listed in the 'impractical but awesome' part for being rare, but it's a lot more common since the haloween update.
Hide / Show RepliesThen change it. You've got a keyboard, a pointer, and a grasp of the English language. In the time it took you to write this entry, you could have made a handle and corrected the page.
My fellow tropers, a gentle moderatorly reminder. We are here to discuss our favorite TV shows, films, books, games, etc. We are not here to rant about (or compliment) ourselves for being awesome/lousy/schizophrenic fans. I cut out a lot of tropes on this article that had nothing whatsoever to do with the game. Please carry on in that spirit. Thanks.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!" Hide / Show RepliesIt's not the internet if we can't masturbate to our own accomplishments! :p
on "Dummied Out": I swear that articles are supposed to represent what's true at the latest version of the subject. Now that Fishing Rods do have a purpose, shouldn't the article be edited to reflect that?
Or how about just a sub-entry along the lines of "this used to apply"?
Specialty: Laser Guided Spellchecks on blatant misspellings. No that's not a trope.Does minecraft really have a "lovely" community? It didn't the last time I checked. It has been saturated by people under the age of 14 recently, and the general atmosphere is one of mixed hostility, ignorance, and ambivalence.
Edited by Kastorr I don't even know. Hide / Show RepliesMy guess is that it's lovely in the sense that they usually tend to make pretty neat creations.
Just don't visit the forums.
I didn't realise it was sarcasm, initially. That sentence went a long way towards making up my mind to buy Minecraft. I thought I was going to ride unicorns over a magic rainbow bridge with my new internet friends and we'd all go to the gumdrop valley where there would be creepers who really did just want to be held and at night we'd eat grilled pork. Instead, the first open multiplayer server I joined had a phallus building competition.
(I won)
It seems I inadvertently blanked the page by editing it. I have no idea what I did, but it wasn't intentional.
edit: All good now it seems. To clarify, I didn't blank the source, I just edited something and the article wouldn't show up anymore... weird.
Edited by lunboks Hide / Show RepliesSerious? Any more experienced tropers know how to get this restored? I'm dismayed enough to want to act and restore it, but I don't know how.
Specialty: Laser Guided Spellchecks on blatant misspellings. No that's not a trope.I'd really like to nuke fully three fourths of the "crowning moment of awesome" section, and not just because it inherently offends me that none of them are actually 'moments' (to say nothing about suggesting there's anything remotely good about skeletons riding spiders...*shudder*) but that'd kind of be a dick move, not to mention I suck at repurposing information, so I figured I should try the democratic process.
Hide / Show RepliesI'd say to remove the Spider thing and the "you're a guy with blah blah blah" part. The others would count as C Mo As.
I think creepers ought to be added to the Demonic Spiders entry, does anyone agree?
Hide / Show RepliesSure, Why Not?. Make sure you maintain the proper formatting that I just tweaked the page with.
See you in the discussion pages.
There really needs to be consistent formatting for names here; I've spent some time cleaning up the trope page so that capitalisation is consistent. Here's what I've gone for: Most mobs, blocks, items, and structures are uncapitalised ("creeper", "obsidian", "diamond", "abandoned mineshaft"). Bosses, dimensions, enchantments, and status effects are capitalised ("Ender Dragon" - which is also two words, not one, "the Nether", "Feather Falling", "potion of Fire Resistance"). Phrases with dimension names in them only have the dimension's name capitalised ("Nether portal", "End city"). Illager Raids are considered bosses (I may have been inconsistent on this one); wardens are not. Let me know if this seems good!
