Find a Trope:
resolved A dog name Charles Print Comic
Is there a trope for characters such as aliens/monsters/cavemen/animals/robots having regular-sounding names, usually as a joke, or a form of Translation Convention?
openIrrelevant trait
Do we have something for characters that have some sort of trait or ability, but it's moot because of something else about them (or was moot until it comes up, and never comes up again)? e.g. a character who's really good at rock climbing, but owns a jetpack anyway, or a character with Super-Strength who serves as Mission Control (or conversely, Mission Control turns out to have Super-Strength).
Probably a sister or super trope to Ironic Fear (where they don't do the thing they can do because of a phobia) and Acrophobic Bird (when they just keep forgetting they have a useful ability).
- Vogans in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy are from an aquatic species who can swim to absurd depths, but their hat is being an Obstructive Bureaucrat to the universe so they never have time.
openJoke villain actually is useful? Western Animation
I've seen this in some cartoons:
- Alice the protagonist fights Bob who looks like a joke villain, but he's far from a joke in reality; he's as much of a Badass as Alice. However, he isn't a Lethal Joke Character, he's dangerous but no-one In-Universe believes he's that; everyone sees him as a joke.
I'm sure it was a stock trope in eighties cartoons unless I'm wrong.
Fighting Clown is the only one I can think of right now as well as Cassandra Truth.
Edited by Merseyuser1opencollector's item
Something being valued in-universe for collector's reasons, such as being a rare edition or issue #1 of an old comic series.
openFear of Being the Friend That Nobody Likes
Either one friend was jokingly told they're The Friend Nobody Likes, or they fear their friends view them as this (but it's not said out loud). They separate themselves from the group or act jealous at the friendship others in the group have until the group reassures them that they're True Companions or something like that.
openDoes this count as VillainEpisode?
From Michael Vey:
- Villain Episode: There are several chapters from book 2 onwards from the point of view of the villains, although only the Elgen Guard Welch has chapters specifically focused on his backstory in book 6.
I don't think that's what the trope is about. In a book series, wouldn't Villain Episode be an entire book about the villains?
openMagical Phone Application
A subtrope of Supernatural Phone, in which a specific application has supernatural properties and is often used as a Plot Device.
In Yuki Yuna is a Hero the girls transform into magical girls via a magical app. Something similar happens in Show By Rock as well, where the MC gets her guitar via an app.
I feel like there's plenty of other examples that I know of but they're just at the tip of my tongue.
openStatus-Inducing Spores Videogame
In rpgs, mushroom creatures usually have a move that involves them releasing spores, which causes a Standard Status Effect. Is there a trope for this?
openPimping out your gay son for business Live Action TV
Business magnate (usu man) asks their gay son to represent them in a meeting with a prospective business partner. The son thinks he's finally being recognised for his negotiating skills or whatever but when he gets to the meeting it turns out that he was sent there because the guy is gay and expecting something sexual to happen to close the deal. Son is understandably hurt.
I saw this while watching Dynasty and I'm sure I've seen this specific trope elsewhere. I think it happens less with daughters because we're trained as viewers to see it coming when it's an older man and younger woman, so it's less of a gut-wrenching surprise.
I know this is a subtrope of something, but I don't know what. If someone could tell me that'd be great!
Edited by steelpenguinsopenThe villain can't have a point
A nasty solution of a potentially morally grey situation: The position of the antagonist may be valid, but they are the antagonist, and usually by either Slowly Slipping Into Evil or Jumping Off the Slippery Slope , they are now definitely evil and the narrative paints their position also as wrong.
Edited by MysteriumopenFriend part of hated group
Bob hates group X (religion, ethnicity, species, political party, fandom...) and is friends with Alice. Alice is friends with Bob, but is secretly a member of group X. Replace "is friends" with "in love" for even more drama.
What's the trope for that? It's not really Loves My Alter Ego.
Edited by Chabal2openAn entity that has multiple heads, usually in order to make them scarier
This is basically when a monster has multiple heads, but unlike in Multiple Head Case, the heads do not have different personalities, and unlike A Head at Each End, the heads are all connected to the upper part or sides of the body. Like the mythological Hydra or King Ghidorah.
Edited by MasterNopen"Don't you have something you want to say to me?"
something really good/really bad/otherwise blatantly obvious happens to Alice, which was caused by Bob (edit: not necessarily). for whatever reason, Bob doesn't congratulate/apologize/etc. Alice for this blatantly obvious event, so Alice tries to egg Bob on with the question in the title. Bob has no answer, either because he's too dense or deliberately trying to avoid the question, or what have you.
admittedly "inspired" by this video, which would be an example if i knew what the trope was.
Edited by FreecomopenTrope differences? Live Action TV
Before adding to Canonical List of Subtle Trope Distinctions, what's the difference between:
- Original Flavour vs Pseudo-Canonical Fic
- The Stations of the Canon vs Broad Strokes vs In Spite of a Nail vs For Want Of A Nail
- You Rebel Scum! vs Your Terrorists Are Our Freedom Fighters
- Loose Canon vs Schrödinger's Canon vs Broad Strokes
- Unintentional Period Piece vs Period Piece vs 20MinutesIntoThePast vs Present-Day Past
openMaking Another See Through Your Eyes
So, in Take a Stand: The Broken Mirror there's a kid, Aaron, who has the ability to make whoever he's maintaining physical contact with see through his eyes. Would this be an inversion of the Seeing Through Another's Eyes trope?
openWinding Storyteller
A character known for telling long, painfully boring stories. (Sorry if this isn’t very clear, but I’m not sure how else to put it)
openSpecific Form of Anachronism Stew?
Which subtrope of Anachronism Stew best describes a character being a Gadgeteer Genius in modern technology despite being from a time period without it?
openoverly long mathematical formula
mathematical formula version of Overly Long Fighting Animation
he looked like Magically Inept Fighter (The one weak against magic) but when Wizard Duel happens, he doesn't carry any physical weapon instead using magic and when hit by physical weapon it only scratches them
