Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Bit late to the party on Hela, but I'd like to give a resounding [tup].

Gosh, 2017 has been quite a year for female CM's; in movies alone you got Rose Armitage, Cypher, Rita Repulsa, Poppy Adams and now it looks like Hela might take home the royal flush!

[tup] Reginald. Is this wrong about Idaris?

  • Moral Event Horizon: Idaris John/Melungo the Wizard crosses it in flashback when he convinces Benjamin Omari to chop off another boy's foot, under threat of being burned to death.
    • The two shooters in "The Tennants" & "Voices" who murder nine people in total, and injure eight more in an effort to become famous cross it the moment their motive is revealed.

As for female CM villains in 2017, there is also Margo and Ahmanet.

Can we make a list of the 2017 monsters at the end of the year?

Yea to Reg...and I have a killer to kind of go with the vehicular Serial Killer theme.

What's the Work?

City Hunter is an 80s manga by Hojo Tsukasa, concerning the City Hunter, Ryo Saeba, a Hitman with a Heart turned private-eye. Quoth the trope page: At a young age, he was used as a test subject for a unique LSD derivative which resulted in him developing Super Reflexes. He trained these reflexes as a guerilla in that country's civil war before escaping to the United States and thence to Japan. In Japan, he teamed up with former police detective Hideyuki Makimura to form the "City Hunter" sweeper agency; ostensibly, he's a Private Detective, but will go further for certain clients.

The manga gets more whacky and silly as it goes on, but there are some very, very serious stories early on, so with that said...

Who is our villain?

The 'BMW Devil' of the eponymous chapters in volume 1, is a Serial Killer who prowls the streets in his BMW looking for 'delinquent' attractive girls who are out late. Once he finds them, he snatches them, drives off and rapes and murders them before disposing of the bodies with the help of a henchman. The story opens when he takes his fifth vicitm, a young woman named Yuka out with her sister Natsumi.. Asking her to see his map to help him find his location...he yanks her in the car and drives off. Natsumi, realizing her sister is the latest victim of a Serial Killer goes to Ryo to ask for help. Ryo takes the job. The BMW Devil decides he no longer needs an accomplish and executes his partner before trying to stalk Ryo and murder him as well.

Ryo survives and begins stalking the killer, who brags he won't stop: he intends to claim double the number of victims. Then double that again, and anyone who tries to stop his 'pleasure' will die. Ryo proceeds to hound him, stopping him from gaining victims until he targets Natsumi, trying to rape her when she lures him into a trap. Ryo is waiting and systematically shoots him with tiny, barbed arrows, four in all so he can have a taste of the pain of his victims. The Devil tries to get in his car and run down Ryo and Natsumi. Ryo, without flinching, pulls the trigger "for number 5" and shoots the devil through the head, making him crash to the side.

Heinous standard?

There'll be one other villain from the early anime, but...I think we're clear. He's a pretty dark villain and the series gets Lighter and Softer from what I know as it goes on. We have enough to establish a pattern. Five rapes, six murders, an attempted rape and bragging he'll pile the body count higher and higher.

Mitigating Qualities?

Zero. Absolutely none.

Conclusion?

You decide!

Anyway, it's been two weeks since the chapter where Overhaul has been defeated, and after discussing with Lighty, along with agreeing that today would be a good date to open up discussion, we both believed that he doesn't count.

While Overhaul could be argued to have his actions be unique enough to qualify (while the likes of Stain and Tomura Shigaraki outdo him in terms of body count and attempted body count, Overhaul physically and emotionally tortured a little girl named Eri, using her blood to produce drugs that nullify quirks as well as making her believe that she was a cursed being who brings harm to others around her, along with heavy implications that he repeatedly killed and regenerated her with his powers, along with typical murders of henchmen for minor reasons and forcing a loyal subordinate of his into an And I Must Scream situation for the sake of more power) Overhaul seems to genuinely care about his former boss. A flashback and narration he had shown that his primary motivation for his actions is to repay his old boss for taking him in. Something that kinda complicates this is that said boss was disgusted with Overhaul's plans to use Eri to produce drugs that nullify quirks, leading to Overhaul killing his former boss.

In case somebody brings this up, while this is somewhat similar to other CM's such as Ego, who also killed a person he claimed to care about to continue his plans, the difference is that Ego killed Meredith due to viewing love as a weakness that would get in the way of his plans while Overhaul killed the person he cared about, not just because he got in the way of his plans, but because it would stop Overhaul from repaying him. Even during his narration outside of flashbacks, Overhaul repeatedly talks about repaying his former boss, so I'm pretty sure the care was genuine, despite expressing it in an incredibly fucked up way.
