Subpages cleanup: Complete Monster

Go To

During the investigation of recent hollers in the Complete Monster thread, it's become apparent to the staff that an insular, unfriendly culture has evolved in the Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard threads that is causing problems.

Specific issues include:

  • Overzealous hollers on tropers who come into the threads without being familiar with all the rules and traditions of the tropes. And when they are familiar with said rules and traditions, they get accused (with little evidence) of being ban evaders.
  • A few tropers in the thread habitually engage in snotty, impolite mini-modding. There are also regular complaints about excessive, offtopic "socializing" posts.
  • Many many thread regulars barely post/edit anywhere else, making the threads look like they are divorced from the rest of TV Tropes.
  • Following that, there are often complaints about the threads and their regulars violating wiki rules, such as on indexing, crosswicking, example context and example categorization. Some folks are working on resolving the issues, but...
  • Often moderator action against thread regulars leads to a lot of participants suddenly showing up in the moderation threads to protest and speak on their behalf, like a clique.

It is not a super high level problem, but it has been going on for years and we cannot ignore it any longer. There will be a thread in Wiki Talk to discuss the problem; in the meantime there is a moratorium on further Complete Monster and Magnificent Bastard example discussion until we have gotten this sorted out.

Update: The new threads have been made and can be found here:

Please see the Frequently Asked Questions and Common Requests List before suggesting any new entries for this trope.

IMPORTANT: To avoid a holler to the mods, please see here for the earliest date a work can be discussed, (usually two weeks from the US release), as well as who's reserved discussion.

When voting, you must specify the candidate(s). No blanket votes (i.e. "[tup] to everyone I missed").

No plagiarism: It's fair to source things, but an effortpost must be your own work and not lifted wholesale from another source.

We don't care what other sites think about a character being a Complete Monster. We judge this trope by our own criteria. Repeatedly attempting to bring up other sites will earn a suspension.

What is the Work

Here you briefly describe the work in question and explain any important setting details. Don't assume that everyone is familiar with the work in question.

Who is the Candidate and What have they Done?

This will be the main portion of the Effort Post. Here you list all of the crimes committed by the candidate. For candidates with longer rap sheets, keep the list to their most important and heinous crimes, we don't need to hear about every time they decide to do something minor or petty.

Do they have any Mitigating Factors or Freudian Excuse?

Here you discuss any potential redeeming or sympathetic features the character has, the character's Freudian Excuse if they have one, as well as any other potential mitigating factors like Offscreen Villainy or questions of moral agency. Try to present these as objectively as possible by presenting any evidence that may support or refute the mitigating factors.

Do they meet the Heinousness Standard?

Here you compare the actions of the Candidate to other character actions in the story in order to determine if they stand out or not. Remember that all characters, not just other villains, contribute to the Heinousness Standard

Final Verdict?

Simply state whether or not you think the character counts or not.

Alright! Heinrich finally gets an effortpost.

Who is he? Heinrich von Raitenau the grandson of the previous Trauma center Big Bad Adam and shares the atrocities of the second game with Patrick Mercer, an anti villain made evil by the loss of his wife. Heinrich is a scientist who cares little of others if anything. Though Mercer becomes the true Big Bad as Heinrich falls victim to GUILT himself, he still gets plenty of screentime and as the supplier of GUILT is ultimately the Big Bad.

What has he done?

Heinrich starts the game off by contining from where his grandfather using various Chosen kids and other people as test subjects for GUILT (a deadly internal virus that tears apart your organs created by the terrorist organization Delphi in an attempt to wipe out the mpdern world) to see how effective it is. Several die and the ones who don't are only saved because Dr. Stiles is basically Jesus as a surgeon. Anyway, Heinrich spreads GUILT throughout the world forcing Stiles to come out of retirement. He experiments on his children For Science and uses them as guinea pigs for GUILT not caring that he nearly killed them. (Nearly is only because Derek Stiles intervened) He's got a multitude of attempted murders on his head and several successful onscreen murders from GUILT. He believes that he is to become the God of this new world and sees being compared to his grandfather as a compliment. It's also implied he caused the accident that made Patrick Mercer's wife deathly ill. He also gives GUILT to Angie and forces a Sadistic Choice on Derek: either save his kids or Angie. Derek manages to do both and Heinrich contracts GUILT.

Heinous by the standards of the story/Freudian Excuse?

I would say he's definitely heinous enough given that he's essentially his grandfather only he has no qualms about giving his children GUILT For Science! or giving all his resources to a crazed beurocrat just to watch him terrorize the world and see his research bloom. He is essentially the medical drama version of Dr Josef Mengele. Easy pass. As for Freudian Excuse or other factors, he has no love for his children or wife, and his only "excuse" is that his grandfather's a terrorist, which doesn't hold water when he chooses to emulate said grandfather to a T. Yeah he's utterly loathsome despite not being the Final boss.

Final thoughts?

Honestly having seen a play through of the game, I have no idea how we came to cutting him and I wholeheartedly support his return.

Edit: Late, but a big yes to the moratorium idea. Ambar's teaching me words I'd never think to look up. I'm probably the youngest one here too.

@44856: I did all the write-ups and most of the proposals for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

Yes to a moratorium, no to any permanent rule.

Has Dark Souls ever been discussed here? I might have a proposal or two.

Lightysnake, my effort posts are usually good, but in this case, I don't have a lot to work with. The worst thing someone did in Revenge is put a bomb on Flight 197, which killed 247 people and Trevor Mathis only did it because the Initiative threatened his daughter's life if he didn't and then after the bombing, killed her anyway. I was trying to single out individual members of the Corrupt Corporate Executive group that ran Americon and Trask was the only one who really got his hands dirty in any of it.

Dark Souls has been discussed here. We've tossed out characters like Seath, Petrus and Lautrec, and honestly I'd [tdown] pretty much any character from that series to date. Too minimalistic in the story that is presented to include much of anyone.

Hmmm, was just re-reading the final chapters of Blood Work and discovered something that I (somehow) missed on my first read-through.

When The Code Killer is revealed to be Crimmins, and Mc Caleb is going over his file, the sheriff informs him they talked to Crimmins' father, and he said he hadn't seen his son in years, but the times he managed to get him on a phone, Crimmins would tell him he was still on the force.

While it seems like he doesn't want his father to know the truth about him washing out, it's never stated why. It could be embarassment (which would be a disqualifying feature), or it could be Pragmatic Villainy, wanting to keep his father from nosing around in his life.

So, I'll leave it up to you guys. I, personally, don't think it redeems him, seeing as it's an Informed Attribute and it could easily be for pragmatic reasons.

So, remember Dracula from Department 19? Well, I MAY have another candidate. From the second book, The Rising, Professor Richard Talbot, AKA Christopher Reynolds (real name unknown).
FYI, Department 19's HQ is called the Loop. SPOILER ALERT.

Who is he?
He is the head of Department 19's Lazarus Project, which studies vampires in an attempt to reverse vampirism. However, Talbot is actually trying to find a cure to neutralize vampires' weaknesses (sunlight, etc). In addition, he is a mole for Dracula's Dragon, Valeri Rusmanov.

What has he done?
Well, that science stuff? It involves Cold-Blooded Torture and murder of vampires (including, if he hadn't been stopped, a young child). He had done this previously, and killed his staff using nerve gas, and at the Loop, he killed the rest of Project Lazarus (23 people) using Sarin. His helping Valeri Rusmanov led to the kidnapping of Department 19's director Henry Seward and the death of 68 members of Dept. 19 when Valeri led an army on the Loop; more would've likely died if not for a secret weapon. Several more were injured.

Freudian Excuse or other redeeming features?
None that I can tell. He seems friendly toward Jamie, but this is, as we find out, Faux Affably Evil.

Heinousness?
This is the only tricky spot. He doesn't have the massive body count of Dracula or other vampires, but on the other hand, he is human, and his actions lead to the death of nearly 100. In addition, he tries to kill all the remaining vampires in the Lazarus Project, as part of "tidying up."

Final Verdict?
The only issue is heinousness, but I think that, as a human, he counts.

[tup] to Heinrich and Talbot. Cut Saki.

Since he's been unanimously upvoted (Thus far), here's Crimmins' write-up.

Blood Work: After being rejected from the LAPD for antisocial behavior, Daniel Crimmins, obsessed with being a "somebody" and proving his superiority, became "The Code Killer." Crimmins murdered numerous people in his rampage, sending taunting messages to the police about their inability to stop him, and when Terry McCaleb, Crimmins' appointed "nemesis," experiences a heart failure, Crimmins, refusing to let him die so simply, begins killing organ donors with McCaleb's blood type, knowing this will get him a heart transplant faster. When Crimmins' plan to frame McCaleb for the crimes fails, Crimmins kidnaps Graciela, McCaleb's Love Interest, and her young nephew, with plans to starve them to death by burying them alive, just to torture McCaleb. Even when dying, Crimmins refuses to take the blame for his crimes or reveal the hostages' location to McCaleb. While implied to have an Inferiority Superiority Complex, Daniel Crimmins was ultimately a sadistic and homicidal lunatic who cared about his own "legacy" more than anything else.

So, Blood Work has a film, and the killer is (In my opinion) worse than in the book. He has quite a few differences with his book counterpart, so should I bother effortposting him?

Also my wait and see list has a new potential candidate from Gotham, with Jerome Valeska, who is apparently shaping up to be a certain someone from the Batman franchise. But of course, the season just started, so time will tell.

Yes to Heinrich, cut Saki. Keep Crimmin and Talbot. Query: Any outstanding writeus besides my own? We need Dr. Banno, but besides...

I have a proposal from the film Vidocq, starring Gerard Depardieu as legendary inspector Vidocq, hunting down the murderer known as the Alchemist. Vidocq is defeated by the killer and is presumed killed, as his biographer Etienne Boisset tries to retrace his steps with the authorities.

Now, here's an effortpost on the Alchemist, AKA... Etienne Boisset

Who IS He and What Does He Do?

A terrifying serial killer with a reflective mask. The Alchemist murders those he comes across in gruesome ways. The Alchemist mostly targets young women, with only one survivor who had her tongue removed. The victims seem to be drained of blood and tortured to death and his lair reveals mutilated human remains.

What's worse is the disturbing evidence that indicates his rampages go back to the Middle Ages. It is revealed Vidocq is alive, and has discovered the truth: the Alchemist is immortal and uses the souls of his victims, that he steals with the mask, to maintain his immortality. However, the mask needs to be renewed every so often, by murdering virgins and using their blood to keep his mask empowered.

And furthermore, the Alchemist is really Etienne himself, retracing Vidocq's steps to eliminate the clues Vidocq had uncovered. Etienne has been alive for centuries, renewing his mask and murdering to trap the souls of his victims in it to empower himself. He also kills Vidocq's partner at the final battle before Vidocq defeats him, but the final scene of the film indicates he may still be alive.

He's the only villain and sets the heinous standard. No excuse beyond hungering for immortality and absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever, and a goddamn enormous body count.
