To-do list:

  • Clean up examples. Sandbox examples that involve a character using a very deep voice as a gag (such as to to exaggerate how angry, mean, loud, or forceful they are at the moment, or simply because it sounds funny) at Sandbox.Suddenly Deep Voice Gag. References to the term with no tropeworthy meaning may be able to be changed to point to MediaNotes.Voice Types.
    • Clean up wicks.

    Original post

Note: This thread was proposed by AudioSpeaks2.

The problem: The description of Basso Profundo currently describes characters with exceptionally low voices with no discussion of narrative meaning. The on-page examples list a mix of fictional characters and real actors/musicians with very deep voices, with no significance given for most entries. It overlaps with the tropes listed under the now disambiguated Badass Baritone for "cool"/"manly" characters with deep voices and Evil Sounds Deep for evil characters with deep voices.

Giant Cicada created the initial writeup, the summary seen above, a wick check, and one of the solutions, while AudioSpeaks2 finished the wick check and wrote the other solutions.

Here the results:

  • Overlap with or Evil Sounds Deep or the tropes listed under Badass Baritone: 12/50 or 24%
  • Low bass with some other significance: 3/50 or 6%
  • Character uses a very deep voice for a gag: 3/50 or 6%
  • Character is a low bass but given no context or no context given at all: 24/50 or 48%
  • Real person is a low bass: 8/50 or 16%
  • Unsortable: 1/50 or 2%

Analysis: The wick check has shown it to be mainly plagued with Zero-Context Examples and examples that overlap with Evil Sounds Deep, Baritone of Strength, Authority Sounds Deep or any of the other tropes under Badass Baritone.

Proposed Solutions:

  • Retool it "Suddenly Deep Voice Gag": A character suddenly adopts a much deeper voice than usual. Often used to exaggerate how angry, mean, loud, or forceful they are at the moment. Sometimes for no reason except because it sounds funny - common in YouTube Poop and other types of Web Video.
  • Disambiguate it by making it a redirect to Badass Baritone.
  • Turn it into a music-related Useful Notes page, like the Circle of Fifths. Or if not music related, then just a Useful Note in general.

Even the original TLP draft (then titled "Dish Rattler") reads more like a Useful Note.

Wick check:

Summary

The description of Basso Profundo currently describes characters with exceptionally low voices with no discussion of narrative meaning.

This is a wick check to review how Basso Profundo is being used and to see if there are any distinct tropes at work. Because the trope page doesn't describe a correct narrative use, I didn't use a "correct" folder. I also separated real actors/musicians/etc when it didn't refer to role they play since someone's natural register can't have narrative meaning.

Potholes are marked in bold and comments are marked in pink.

Categories:

  • Character is a deep bass and is "badass/manly/cool" (overlaps with the tropes listed under Badass Baritone)
  • Character is a deep bass and is evil (overlaps with Evil Sounds Deep)
  • Character is a deep bass; other story significance
  • Someone temporarily uses a very deep voice for a gag
  • Character is a deep bass; no context given
  • Real person is a deep bass; no meaning possible
  • Zero Context Examples or Unclear
  • Unsortable

    open/close all folders
Character is a deep bass and is badass/cool/manly (6/50, 12%)
  • Characters. The Last Blade: [under Zantetsu] Guttural Growler: Ryûzaburô Ôtomo gives Zantetsu a very deep, gravel tone to his voice, almost to Basso Profundo levels if it wasn't for Zantetsu's stoicism.
  • WebVideo.Ahoy: Stuart has a deep and commanding voice, and this is mentioned in the comments on pretty much every video he releases.
  • Characters.Persona Recurring: Following his recast in Japanese, Igor's voice has gone from an impish high pitched one to an extremely deep reverberating (though still soft-spoken) thunder. This is actually the voice adapted by his impostor, however, as the real Igor still sounds very much like he always had. Doesn't directly state that Igor's new deep voice is badass, but does contrast how impish his previous one sounded so I guess this is supposed to signify he sounds cool
  • Characters.Schmigadoon: Lets out a very impressive low note at the end of his first solo song. Given that he's played by Patrick Page (of Hadestown fame), this is not suprising.
  • Codex Equus Trimortidae: [both under Rock Plower]
    • Baritone of Strength: In life, he was known for his deep singing voice, which added to Type C Negative's fame as a band. He is presently a Death god who happens to be unusually powerful compared to other deities of his generation because he is magically linked to Equus' entire biosphere after he impressed the planet's world spirit by trying to heal it of its corruption despite his own injuries.
    • Basso Profundo: Like Peter Steele, he has a deep singing voice, which partially factored into his fame as a Gothic Metal musician and the frontmane of band Type C Negative.
  • Characters.A Song Of Light And Dark: Lyrian's singing voice is described as a silk-smooth bass-baritone who, according to Anakin, makes Mace Windu sound like a soprano.

Character is a deep bass and is evil (6/50, 12%)

Character is a deep bass, other significance (3/50, 6%)

Someone temporarily uses a very deep voice for a gag (3/50, 6%)

Character is a deep bass, no context (16/50, 32%)

Real person is a deep bass, including musicians (8/50, 16%)
  • Creator.Thurl Ravenscroft: While his deep voice was perfectly capable of shaking gods and chilling audiences, Thurl preferred to provide children's fare, and his voice also possessed a very friendly vibe to it, much like a giant teddy bear.
  • Vocal Evolution.Music: When Leonard Cohen started making recordings, his voice was somewhat normally pitched. It was only during the early to mid-1980s that his trademark Basso Profundo voice came into being.
  • Truck Driver's Gear Change: Basso Profundo singer Richard Sterban (who does the song's "giddyup, ba oom papa oom papa mow mow") makes the key change along with everyone else, but the fact that it's in a higher key allows him to then drop it an octave.
  • Funny.Pentatonix: A post to the group's Instagram account shows a video clip of Avi, the group's Basso Profundo singing "Thrift Shop"...after inhaling helium.
  • Creator.Tetsu Inada: So anyway, Tetsu Inada (born July 1, 1972) is one of the seiyuus known around since the '90s, gracing the world of voice acting with his natural bass
  • Yello: Dieter Meier's voice is famously low-pitched. Several songs such as "Oh Yeah" or "Rubberbandman" mechanically lowers to even more into a Basso Profundo.
  • FaceOfTheBand.HipHop: Although each rapper in the Jurassic 5 has roughly equal microphone time, Chali 2na is easily the best known thanks to his incredibly distinctive voice, as well as for having the most notable solo career of the bunch.
  • Music.Johnny Cash: Though normally a baritone, his booming voice (which was his trademark) could reach the lower bass range. Sadly, this was technically averted later in life when fading health and the after effects of pneumonia (among other conditions) caused his voice to rise in timbre considerably.

Zero Context Examples or Unclear(7/50, 14%)

    Unsortable (1/50, 2%)

Results:

  • Overlap with or Evil Sounds Deep or the tropes listed under Badass Baritone: 12/50 or 24%

  • Low bass with some other significance: 3/50 or 6%

  • Character uses a very deep voice for a gag: 3/50 or 6%

  • Real person is a low bass: 8/50 or 16%

Verdict

The wick check has shown it to be mainly plagued with Zero-Context Examples and examples that overlap with Evil Sounds Deep, Baritone of Strength, Authority Sounds Deep or any of the other tropes under Badass Baritone.

What to do?

  1. Retool it "Suddenly Deep Voice Gag": A character suddenly adopts a much deeper voice than usual. Often used to exaggerate how angry, mean, loud, or forceful they are at the moment. Sometimes for no reason except because it sounds funny - common in YouTube Poop and other types of Web Video.
  2. I propose to disambiguate it by making it a redirect to Badass Baritone. (I lean more towards this one)

Paging ~AudioSpeaks2 and ~Giant Cicada to the thread as requested.

I think definition-only or maybe Media Notes would work better than Useful Notes if we keep the page for the term while getting rid of the examples, since this seems like a better fit for one of those two instead of Useful Notes. Melody is another definition-only music page, and I'm not sure if the Media Notes category was live when the OP was written (it didn't exist when Melody was brought up in the thread that cleaned up the Definition-Only Pages index a while back).

Edit: Wikipedia has a page for the concept (under the name basso profondo, not basso profundo), so this is a preexisting term (except for the spelling being Spanish for us and Italian for them, though both are listed as valid on their page; I'm not sure which spelling is more common offsite).

Edit: Saw that some music-related pages are already in the Media Notes namespace, so I'm leaning toward moving this there and sandboxing the gag examples to see if we can salvage them (there are 261 wicks total, and if there are enough gag-based examples to move a gag trope to Main/ without it starving, we can move it to Main/ through this thread; otherwise, we'd need to Yard it).

I'm good with moving the page to Media Notes because that's where we're putting a lot of music info pages [tup]

I'm also good with salvaging any of those deep voice gag examples

A page can't be both of those at the same time, but Media Notes would be the one to move it to if we change the namespace because it's outside the scope of Useful Notes.

[tup] Move to Media Notes and arrange wicks under potentially tropeworthy concepts on a sandbox.

Don't we already have Voice Types? Why not just merge the Media Notes page into that / maybe move that page to Media Notes?

[up] Good point

Voice Types should be in Media Notes for the record given how they were created for musical purposes

I hooked a crowner for whether to move to Media Notes (with or without merging with Voice Types, which, as pointed out, belongs in Media Notes instead of Useful Notes), as well as whether to split off a gag for suddenly deep voices if we move Basso Profundo to Media Notes.

Calling in favor of the following:

  • Merge with Voice Types
  • Sandbox examples that involve a character using a very deep voice as a gag (such as to to exaggerate how angry, mean, loud, or forceful they are at the moment, or simply because it sounds funny) to salvage for a new trope page. If there are enough examples for the trope to be thriving (per Wick), the sandbox can be moved to Main/ right away; otherwise, it will be sent to TLP or the Trope Idea Salvage Yard.

Voice Types was moved to Media Notes and dewicked, so we need to merge Basso Profundo with it, and sandbox any tropeworthy gag-based examples.

Edit: Copied the description's text to a folder on Voice Types. Leaving Main.Basso Profundo up for now so we can sort through the examples.

I dewicked and cut the Main.Basso Profondo alternate spelling redirect (MediaNotes.Basso Profondo was made as a redirect to MediaNotes.Voice Types for searchability reasons, and so the auto-disambig system will work). Not much of an accomplishment with only five wicks; I'm mainly mentioning it because I couldn't find anything to salvage for Sandbox.Suddenly Deep Voice Gag. Main.Basso Profundo's on-page examples and wicks still need to be sorted through.

I took care of the on-page examples and redirected the page to MediaNotes.Voice Types (we can cut it after dewicking since MediaNotes.Basso Profundo exists as a redirect). I transplanted the entries in the Music folder to a new list on the Voice Types page (similarly to the lists other vocal ranges have) and found two examples to salvage for the gag trope (though one might need more context).
