Another Justice Avengers spinoff? Well, yes and no.

JA has been one of TVT's most successful games, having lasted over 5 years. A lot of continuity has accumulated since then and it can be intimidating to jump in. This game is intended for those who want to play in a shared Marvel + DC universe, but without worrying about that. The concept is that this takes place in a Parallel Universe where the same characters exist but are barely starting their careers. (think 'Ultimate Marvel' except without the grittiness.)

Rules:

  • All TV Tropes RPG Forum rules, such as "No Autohitting."
  • Marvel and DC characters only. No original characters or those from other sources.
  • One character at a time. Exception: characters who can only act together for some reason. (ex. The Wondertwins)
  • All characters are assumed to be in the early years of their career. Note this does not prevent use of characters created later. Just adjust the origin.
  • Heroes only. You may use heroic versions of villains or antiheroes *if they exist*
  • There is no Power Level limit. It's the GM's job to keep game balance by providing appropriate challenges (and if players abuse their Power, by depowering them.)
  • Players are free to post when they want. But the GM will respond to them when they post. It's *their* responsibility to keep up. If they take too long, the GM will just move on with the game.

Character Sheet:

  • Identity: and whether its secret or not
  • Powers, Skills and Equipment: you can ONLY use what you list here. No ass-pulls!
  • Appearance: (you can use an image link)
  • Personality: A sentence will do.
  • Origin: Remember that this is a shared universe so any important details from the other company that might influence the character must be listed. Conversely, don't just add ideas because they "sound cool."

Current Players and Characters:

  • Scorpio Rat as Wonder Woman
  • Merseyuser 1 as Jessica Jones
  • kkhohoho as Captain America
  • nman as Angela
  • emilyorthoclase as Boom Boom
  • secretlyasuperhero as Rose and The Thorn
  • Sanojutsu as Riri Williams

Identity: Wonder Woman/Diana of Themyscira. Diana Prince is a false identity given to her by the US government.

Powers:

  • Armed and Unarmed Combat Expert
  • Super Strength- Enough to lift aircraft and throw around tanks easily, and even briefly match a Kryptonian like Superman. Her muscles don't tire out.
  • Super Speed/Reflexes- She has a reaction time fast enough to dodge and block gunfire from multiple sources, and can both think and move at superhuman speeds.
  • Flight-She can fly at high speeds, enough to move across a continent in a few hours.
  • High Endurance/Durability- Resists blunt force, high temperatures, and magical attacks (though they only affect her to a lesser degree). She can still feel pain and be knocked out by a hard enough blow, and conventional piercing and slicing weapons can still cause moderate injuries. Her accelerated healing and high pain tolerance allow her to recover within seconds to minutes depending on the severity. She can also outright resist or at least struggle against most poisons, toxins, and diseases.
  • Immortality- She doesn't physically age beyond her prime, keeping her skills in peak condition. She cannot die of old age.
  • Animal Empathy- She can communicate with and calm animals, even wild ones.
  • Enhanced Intellect/Strategic Mind- She is highly intelligent, learns new languages at an accelerated rate, and can come up with battle plans on the fly.
  • Increased Senses- Her sight, hearing, and sense of smell are slightly sharper than the average person, keeping up with her fast reflexes.

  • Basic Equipment-
    • Lasso of Truth-An indestructible golden lariat that can extend and retract as needed, forcing those who make contact with it to tell and understand the truth. This can serve as a makeshift translator if needed. Those who resist it will feel burning pain until they give in. It can lift the effects of illusions and recall hidden memories, even working on Diana, but those who are too weak willed to accept the truth and their own guilt may become psychologically damaged as an aftereffect.
    • Bracelets- A pair of metal armbands that are unbreakable, rumored to be made from Zeus’ shield, Aegis. They can reflect/absorb the power of bullets, projectiles, and energy blasts.
    • Amazonian Sword and Shield- Greek style short sword and rounded bronze shield. High quality, but they possess no magical abilities and can be damaged or broken.

Appearance: [1]

Personality: Diana is strong willed, confident, friendly, and always accepts a challenge. Her relative newness to the world outside her home makes her more naive than she looks, but she is quick to adapt to situations and cultures, always wanting to learn. Diana considers herself both a warrior and a diplomat, and kills foes only as a very last resort if empathy and compassion fail. She's impulsive and fierce in combat, but believes in fighting for love and what is right, not out of anger or revenge. Her strong conscience makes her value truth and justice heavily, and she will stop and help those in need whether it seems impossible or not. Her compassion is more of a double edged sword, giving her purpose but also opening her up to being tricked or back-stabbed by those who abuse her trust.

Origin: Diana was "born" on Themyscira, shaped out of clay by her mother Queen Hippolyta and brought to life by the Greek Gods. Raised as an Amazon, Diana had a peaceful life among her sisters on the island. This was interrupted when a US affiliated military plane somehow pierced the island's divine protection and crash landed near the beach. Every soldier aboard was dead on impact except for a man named Steve Trevor, who was badly injured. Diana and the other Amazons helped recover the bodies and give them a proper burial, and Steve was taken in by them to heal.

A representative had to be chosen among the Amazons to determine who would escort him back to Man's World. Against her mother's wishes, Diana participated in the following tournament and won the right to become their ambassador, earning the title of Wonder Woman. They depart in the Invisible Jet, made of parts salvaged and upgraded from the broken plane. Steve reaches his base, but Diana is detained in a cell for questioning. During the night, the Greek Gods and Goddesses bestowed gifts on her in the form of superhuman powers, putting her near the level of a demigod. Steve, Lieutenant Etta Candy, and an expert on Amazon culture named Barbara Ann Minerva get permission to let Diana out, and they begin to teach her to speak in English and about modern culture. After helping to stop a group or terrorists working under the influence of the god Ares, Diana was left to her own devices and explored Man's World at her leisure.

Accepted, except that... in the Marvel Universe, the Amazons are villains.

Seriously. Diana even has an evil counterpart, Artume!

I'm going to judge that our Amazons are Neutral, and can swing either way depending on circumstances. Diana however, stays the heroic Wonder Woman (Artume will remain a separate character, most likely her enemy.)

Hmm. I better add a note regarding origins to the rules.

That makes sense, there are a few Amazons in the DC universe that left the island and went rogue in the past.

Last time I had to pull out of one of these due to Real Life Writes the Plot, but where would Jessica Jones fit in?

Since this is an Alternate Continuity, would giving them a British backstory ( for Jessica Jones, being half-English, half-Canadian, and born in Canada to a mother from Vancouver and an American father who is of English descent, could that work?? A Canadianized Jessica Jones?

Application sheet:

Identity: and whether its secret or not - No secret identity. Unless you count the occasional Secret Identity (throwaway ones) she uses for her undercover reports when she writes a blog, and a few Pen Name she writes under for her blogs.

Powers: Has Super-Strength and Super-Toughness, but these are Downplayed Tropes.

Appearance: (you can use an image link) She is identical to Gigi Hadid in looks terms.

Personality: in general, Jessica Jones is very much the overly polite Canadian, and she's very Girly Girl, in contrast to the main continuity's Tomboy personality. She is not The Alcoholic and is vegetarian. She has a very thick and obvious British Columbia accent, a Vancouver one.

Jessica is strong-willed and will follow her own way, and is not easily swayed.

She's very knowledgeable about automobiles and can get people access to one (Knows a Guy Who Knows a Guy) and is The Fixer, but a benevolent type of The Fixer, not a criminal one.

Unlike the main canon, she's not The Knight In Sour Armor, and more of a Nice Girl than The Snark Knight.

However, she retains her Super-Strength and Super-Toughness.

Jessica is also a blogger, and maintains three blogs, an automobile blog, a social issues blog (written under a pseudonym and Secret Identity - involves undercover work, and mentions hackers a la ''Mr. Robot) and a blog on fashion (with pictures of her in crop tops and sports bras).

Compared to Jessica Jones, she is based in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, and not Manhattan, but she lives in Burnaby, near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

She has a boyfriend (actually, The Ghost, an Author Avatar of me) who is unseen by others In-Universe.

Origin: Jessica Jones was born as Jessica Allison Jones in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada to an Anglo-Scottish-Canadian mother, who was born in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada (her mother was English, father was 1/2 Indo-Canadian, 1/2 Scottish-Canadian) and an American father who was from Dallas, Texas, who moved to Canada aged 23, having decided there was nothing for him in Dallas.

Jessica is skilled in computing and also knows a lot about automobiles, and is extremely good at driving. She works as a private investigator, having decided that this was the only way she could be her own boss, and not get stuck with co-workers in a The Office-type situation. Jessica always had a talent for investigating things and loved doing research for school projects as a teenager.

Jessica also got into blogging aged 19, and wrote a blog which is a Long Runner, about buying and selling used cars (Aside from the private investigating, she also is a small-time automobile seller, advertising in Auto Shopper)

Count me in. I'd like to play Captain America, just a few months after he was frozen out of his iceblock if that's alright. That said, I do have some questions. 1.Did the Invaders and JSA still exist in this verse? 2.Was Hippolyta ever active as Wonder Woman back in the day? And 3.Are we still going to have Wondie be Cap and Hippolyta's kid, or is that not going to be a thing in this game?

@kkhohoho:

  • Yes, both the JSA and The Invaders existed (but the latter were part of the Freedom Fighters- never did like the name 'invaders'.)
  • As mentioned above, Hyppolita is Neutral in this universe, as a compromise between both versions. And the events that made her Wonder Woman in the comics have yet to happen. THAT said, she might have had adventures during WWII. I'll be honest: I do not like having multiple versions of the same character. Hyppolita should be the Queen of the Amazons and Diana *the* Wonder Woman.
  • The Cap/Hyppolita thing was not my idea. While I'm not against it, I don't see why it would happen either. Where does that leave characters like Steve Trevor and Sharon Carter? It reminds me of New 52 and how Superman dropped Lois Lane for Wonder Woman because someone thought they should be an item? I guess I'm just saying, give a good reason and I'll consider it.
@nman: Heaven and Asgard are NOT the same realm (in either company.) I guess Angela counts since Marvel bought her and reinvented her as Thor's lost sister (?) I'll have to do some research on her, but right now I don't have a problem.

It's not Heaven, I mean Heven. Which is like the tenth realm, and unrelated to "Heaven" Heaven.

Because the writers can't afford to make this stuff uncomplicated. [lol]

Sijo from Puerto Rico Since: Jan, 2001

.....

There's no "tenth" realm. There's nine. That's straight from Norse Myth.

Inthe Marvel Universe, the 9 realms are dimensions linked by the Yggdrasil tree. OK, not everything in the comics is like in the myths. Still, I'll be damned if they didn't make that up just for Angela's sake.

Like I said, let me research her and I'll get back to you.

@Sijo: Thank you.

Is a second character allowed, in this case, Gypsy from Series/Arrowverse (who has a totally different Back Story and a name, and is slightly similar to Jessica Jones, but not quite the same, she's also from Earth-19's version of Parkersburg, West Virginia, if that's considered The Deep South).

She's different to the original version without the powers of her comics version, and is closer to having some of Barry Allen's powers in The Flash (2014) mixed with Felicity Smoak's interests from Arrow and is entirely human not Ambiguously Human or Human Alien, but a metahuman, and is 1/2 Mexican, 1/2 Canadian-American, born in West Virginia.

Should I submit another application if this character is accepted, just to keep things on record?

This character has got a defined Story Arc planned, if that's of any use.

[up]x5 Okey-dokey. Well, that's OK I guess. Would've been nice, but what can you do? Anyhoo, I'll have a sheet up tonight or tomorrow. We'll see.

[up]Well, in this case, it's her actual Superhero name. She's had it since the 80's, ( yes, I know, different version of her, but still,) and it's stuck ever since. Changing it now after so long might be just a tad arbitrary.

As I mentioned above, I prefer if characters are as unique as possible. So an in-name-only version of Gypsy feels iffy to me. Doesn't she have another identity? Even Guy Gardner once went by Warrior, you know.

In any case, you can only play one character at a time (I might make an exception for characters that *must* act together, for example The Wonder Twins.)

Re: Angela. OK, research done. I'm fine with her backstory (except the parts with Spawn) after all neither Marvel nor DC's angels are "true" ones, they are basically the same as "gods" like the Asgardians. (Btw we might assume the Justice League's Zauriel also comes from 'Heven'.) The One True God is The Presence/The One Above All.

@Emily: is Gypsy an actual slur? I know people prefer to call them Romani these days, but it wasn't that big a deal once. It certainly isn't in Spanish (Gitano = Gypsy. It means errant.) Reminds me of how 'retarded' went from a medical term to an offensive one.

Yeah you can just ignore Spawn stuff. Gaiman sold her to Marvel after Mc Farlane tried to screw him, so in that regard she is a different character entirely in terms of history and stuff.

[up][up] I'm no expert on the subject, but for a lot of people, it is a slur, and it's generally best to tread carefully. At the very least, having a character named after an ethnicity they may not even belong to is probably not a good route to take. Here's an article by people more knowledgeable than I am, and another one.

Boom Boom

  • Identity: Tabitha "Tabby" Smith

  • Powers:

    • Tabitha can generate orbs of pure plasma that can explode with concussive force when she wills it. The bombs range in size from as big as beach balls to as small as marbles; she enjoys using the little ones to play pranks.

    • Tabby is also an expert at picking pockets and picking locks.

  • Appearance: Tick tick tick BOOM

  • Personality: Tabitha is a materialist and a kleptomaniac through and through, largely stemming from her upbringing. Growing up with next to nothing and then spending years committing crimes has left her with a distinct lack of respect for other people's property, and she doesn't seem to entirely realize why this bothers other people. She's not actively malicious, though, and she's typically confident, friendly, and bubbly. Her education has been somewhat slipshod, and she skews towards being reckless and impulsive, but she's very competent when it comes to picking pockets, picking locks, identifying security systems - basically, anything related to stealing stuff.

  • Origin:

    • Tabitha Smith grew up in a trailer park in Roanoke, Virginia with her mother, Mandy Smith. At the age of ten, Tabitha's long-absent father Marty walked back into her life after being released from prison for burglary. Tabitha, who had recently discovered her mutant ability and was mad at her father for his absence, planted a small bomb in his food.

    • Tabitha's parents had very different reactions to discovering their daughter was a mutant. Mandy was horrified and wanted nothing to do with Tabitha, but Marty was delighted. He convinced Tabitha to join him in committing burglaries, and Tabitha spent the next five years traveling the country, learning the tricks of the trade.

    • When Tabitha was sixteen, she and Marty were finally caught in Albany. Marty was sent right back to prison, but Tabitha got off easily due to her youth and the fact that she was considered an accomplice. She was placed in foster care, but it was easy for her to escape. On her own for the first time, Tabitha decided to go to New York City - and it will never be the same.

To be honest, I don't attach much importance to cultural identity. Sure, it's nice to be proud of your heritage, but this is stuff humans invented- no culture will last forever, and in my opinion, they tend to keep us apart.

So while I see your point, I won't forbid a character on such grounds alone. Only if a character is offensive on its own would I oppose it.

Oh and Boom Boom is accepted. [lol]

  • Identity: Captain America/Steve Rogers. Steve has no SID. He won't give out his real name to everyone he meets, but neither does he try and keep it a secret. Besides, after being presumed dead for over close to 70 years, everyone's bound to have found out by now anyway.
  • Powers: Steve Rogers has no real powers in the traditional sense. What he does have is peak human abilities and performance. He's as strong and fit as the finest of athletes and gymnasts, and surpasses many of them in some way or another. He also has a large round shield with the colors of the American flag that's made out of a mixture of various rare and indestructible metals, such as vibranium and adamantium. It can protect him from just about anything, but he can also sling it as a projectile if he so wishes, and when it hits, it hits hard.
    • Is also an expert strategist, skilled soldier, and combat expert.
  • Appearance: "I'm loyal to nothing general, except the dream.''
  • Personality: Captain America is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, but also one of the most determined. He's kind, caring, understanding, calm and collected, and will do whatever he can to help, but if you push him, he will push back. In spite of his heartfelt nature, he's still one of the finest soldiers who ever lived, and when things get serious, so will he. In battle, he's commanding, driven, and blunt, and will do what needs to be done to save the day; even kill if necessary, despite how much he'll hate himself afterward. He's also a natural leader, capable of being decisive and straight to the point while still being reasonable and commanding of your respect, and knows how to inspire people like nobody else short of maybe Superman.

There are only two things holding him back. One is that he still feels like a man out of time, not sure if he belongs or deserves to be here and as such has trouble fitting in. Nevermind his guilt over Bucky. And the second thing is that he can still be a bit too trusting of and subservient to the Government for his own good. He's not by any means a mindless serf, but having the background of a soldier and coming from a time where following your country's orders on principle was accepted as a fact of life, he can still be a tad too willing to follow orders without question. It would take something truly shocking and demoralizing to shatter his faith in his country's time-honored institutions, but if he can break out of his old habits and redefine just what it means to be Captain America, he might be one of the best heroes there ever was.

  • Origin: Steve Rogers grew up in Brooklyn in the 1920's and early 30's. Life was tough, especially during the Depression, but his family made due. His father was an abusive husband and an alcoholic, but his mother was one of the kindest, sweetest, and most determined women there ever was, and she made him who he is today. He also saw fit to educate himself; to know all he could about his country and its' institutions so he could see just how the world really ticked beyond what there was one the surface. In the process, he became a hardline liberal if there ever was one, which was especially rare for the time.

Then World War II struck, terrorizing the world in its wake, but just before it did, something else struck as well: The Golden Age of Superheroes. Mind you, back then they were called Mystery Men, but what was in a name? Steve Rogers, now a young man, quickly became inspired by all of these new heroes running about and vowed to fight the good fight just as they were. As soon as the draft was initiated, Steve jumped at the chance to fight for his nation, but much to his dismay, he was rejected almost immediately. He was too weak, they said. Too scrawny, too skinny. But upon closer inspection, they saw another use for him. One which would turn him into one of the greatest heroes the world would ever see.

Before he knew it, he was put onto a list of candidates for 'Project Rebirth', designed to create a line of Super Soldiers that could effortlessly win the war. It was made to take someone as unfit as could be and turn them into the finest soldier anyone ever saw. After much training and mental evaluation, Steve was selected as the final candidate, and after being given a number of treatments and injections was turned into the first ever Super Soldier! But he would also be the last. After seeing that it could be done, a German spy shot the creator of the experiment, Dr.Erskine, and while Steve did manage to capture him and avenge Erskine, he would still be the only Super Soldier to ever exist.

Still, the army nonetheless now had a bonafide Super Soldier in their ranks, so they put him to work. Before long, he was gallivanting all over Europe, fighting the Nazis, the Axis, and their top agent the Red Skull every step of the way. He quickly made a reputation for himself and was soon invited by none other than Uncle Sam himself to join his Freedom Fighters. Steve quickly became a co-leader, and the lot of them soon proved to be a worthy equal and contemporary to the JSA, whom they worked with on a number of occasions. And top it off, he got his very own partner, Bucky, a child prodigy who could hold his own with the toughest of adults. These were the glory days, and Steve couldn't be happier or more proud of himself.

But it wasn't to last. Shortly before the end of the war, Steve and Bucky were sent to locate and disable an experimental bomb far greater than any they had ever seen, one that was being delivered via aircraft to America itself. (The Red Skull was involved, natch.) They managed to disable the bomb, but the craft crashed into the Antartic, and that was the last thing Steve ever saw...

Well, before being revived 70 or so years later anyway. He was found by a group of explorers and researchers in the Antarctic, frozen in a block of ice with his Super Serum being the only thing keeping him alive. Unfrozen and fully restored, he's found himself a man out of time and a man without a partner, unsure of just what to do with himself. Nevermind the culture shock. Everything just seems different compared to what he was used to. And yet in some ways, when he looks at the news every day, it seems just the same as ever. And despite his misgivings, that's enough to convince himself don the mantle of Captain America once more.

Approved! Also, we might make Project Rebirth part of Project M, which created many of DC's wartime heroes including Miss America (who has transmutation powers rather than the super soldier serum.)

In fact, we have two Miss Americas, counting Marvel's! Since DC had theirs join the JSA as their secretary (a role originally held by Wonder Woman) I'm thinking of letting her be the original Wonder Woman that Diana named herself after. How about that?

That sounds alright to me. Diana's title didn't originally come from the Amazons in the Rebirth canon anyway, newspapers just nicknamed her Wonder Woman.
