In what way is this any way distinct from Typecasting? It seems to be The Same But More Specific only for voice actors. The description itself never even explains why this would be distinct from Typecasting.

Also, like basically anything related to voice actors on the wiki, this seem prone to misuse. Tropers will take an actor with several dozen roles, find 5 that fit the same archetype or have something in common, and declare the actor pigeonholed, ignoring the dozens ol time the actor portrays someone that doesn't fit the archetype. Or have a list of aversion and subversions longer than the example. Look at this indentation clusterfuck of conflicting tropes from Stephanie Sheh

As Typecasting is listing both live action and voice acting, opened.

While I can get behind a merge, a cleanup effort may be needed as well, if there are others with a listing like Sheh's. Maybe require a ratio in order to verify both tropes as valid?

Typecasting currently treats this as a subtrope.

I like the idea of requiring a ratio. I think also requiring a minimum of five works that fit the pattern. Otherwise we wind up with a lot of people just conflating a couple of roles.

I still am not seeing how this is not The Same But More Specific to Typecasting. Typecasting says it's a subgroups but what's the difference between an actor being typecast and a voice actor being typecast?

I completely support the merge as well. I just think we need some actual criteria for what counts.

Agreed, any idea what could that be?

A minimum number of similar roles would help.

Maybe five? That's enough to show it's not just a shoehorn.

5 sounds good.

5 or greater than 50% imo. There are some that just do a few characters for long periods but those characters are all the same.

Also probably need to make a big note that people who do live acting and V As can have very different type casting as well as certain voices they do will get type casted for different things.

The problem is that if we do "or greater than 50%" we'll have people that are on there with just two roles and you can shoehorn anyone in with that causing the current misuse.

You need enough roles to show they're actually pigeonholed and not just a fluke.

[up]At least 5, and over a certain %?

My issue with a flat number is you get the opposite of what you described.

Someone who's played dozens of roles can be pigeonholed multiple times if they had at least 5 of the same sort. Which is the current situation.

Actors can get Typecast several times/ways over the course of their career, though. Playing with Character Type has several examples where the typecast actor plays one role that changes their typecast persona completely, resulting in a swath of new roles to play.

So then at least 5 works AND at least 33 percent of their works? I think it's the or that didn't work for me.

33% was a lot less than I brought up.

But thinking on it there are many methods of pigeonholing the one not brought up so far is a string of works before they managed to break out of the pigeonholing into a set role. Unfortunately that is going to be tough as all our VA and Seiyuu pages are written alphabetical with the character they played instead of chronological like they should be...

We could do fifty percent. Or an uninterrupted streak of at least five long. You're right that it's something you can break out of, or only fall into later.

  • 50%,
  • streaks
  • Specfic voice specific role
  • consistently same roles in the same genre or medium but do different things in other mediums like broadway or animation
  • Word of God that it happened and/or attempted to get out of it.

On those last two, Mark Hamill has stated that in the early days he was pretty much typecast as the young hero, even after attempting to not be typecast by doing The Big Red One. He ended up quitting for 6 years before trying to ditch Skywalker off and on for a decade. But as a VA he has been all over the map the entire time, including voicing The Joker and Wolverine. Also did a lot of broadway.

Am I missing any bulletpoints?

You missed the having enough roles to show it's a pattern. In the case of Word of God the fact that the actor says it's all he was offered is good enough.

I do think there should be a five work rule or at least a four work rule.

I favor the merge myself. While putting a ratio cuts out misuse, no one has explained to me how this is different from typecasting, only for voice actors. It's a clear The Same But More Specific.

I mean, I guess we can do both, apply criterias to Typecasting.

I'm against merging.

Take for example Mark Hamil.

He was type cast as an actor but not as a voice actor.

That seems like an important thing to note. A person can be both an actor and a voice actor and be type cast in one job but not in the other.

Or even type cast differently in the different jobs.

Merging them would make the examples confusing.

Would we have examples soft split between voice acting and acting?

[up] We can always clarify which field is being typecast (voice acting or live-action), or keep both types in separate pages like they are now (a soft-split) while merging the essence of the tropes (how they're both about actors placed in specific type of roles).

Okay, as for mod mode, we've gotten enough favor for specified ratios. Time to clean up Typecasting and Pigeonholed Voice Actor to find the shoehorns that don't fit the minimum or the ratio set.

Need more input on the merge. I'll give it some more time to have opinions heard or votes cast on that matter.
