So far it seems like few people have read much in my story beyond the first two chapters.

Though I suppose it'll change once I put enough chapters up.

Dorked, when I said "unusual," I meant "uncommon." Probably should've used that word instead.

I agree that Riku had a thing for Kairi at the beginning of the first game - that seemed pretty obvious. But it hasn't really come up since then, and I kinda figured that he was either over her or trying to get to that point.

That said, the pairing is still plausible, and I don't have anything against it. I'd imagine it could work if handled by a good writer. I didn't mean to imply that it was weird or bad.

It's cool! Sorry if I came across as snappy or anything. I've just dealt with people being... pretty harsh about it in the past, and I admit it's made me really jaded toward the more popular pairs in the fandom. Riku's crush definitely hasn't come up in a while, though. And honestly, I've noticed that the games in general have strayed away from anything with Riku and Kairi's friendship, period. KH 2 has him call her name as a death scream, but beyond that... well, KH 3 D's localization made a line about her more ambiguous, and she only came up in passing during Coded, and Days had him refer to her as important to Sora.

He's probably moved on in canon or at least doesn't expect her to reciprocate at this point. Still, it's odd how it gets so much flak in the fandom. The KH wiki editors have even repeatedly edited anything that implies Riku had a crush on her. o_o

But like I've said in the past, I just like seeing more variety in ships. Fic's a great place to experiment and explore, but I do understand that's not for everyone either. Mostly, I'm just sad at the lack of multichaptered fics for 'em, so I'm filling the void with my work, albeit as a slowly developing side thing, since the stories are gen.

Also quietly pondering how to best handle a Yzma boss fight, since the Emperor's New Groove world is coming up. I've toyed with the idea of her throwing potions, which could be fun. Just means they'd all have to drink the antidote in the end.

I don't suppose you'd be willing to someday unleash your considerable talents upon the oh-so-desperately-in-need-of-variety Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha fandom?

I'm not super familiar with the fandom, but yeesh. How bad is it? You have me intrigued.

Ngl, I've had some random ship dynamics I've been dying to play with that I'm just not sure how to execute in K Hdom. Like... Ven and Kairi. And Aqua and post-3D Riku. Also, Hayner and Xion. Just... random matchups for fun.

Seemingly 90~% of all shipping fics feature the OTP, Nanoha and Fate (a majority of the remainder probably focus on Hayate and her family/bodyguards). Which is only a confirmed Official Couple by Word of God (i.e., the characters' Japanese voice actresses and the series creator have all said in interviews that Nanoha and Fate are in a romantic relationship, but like hell if the actual animated productions are going to come right out and admit it).

Most of the other side-ships also run on Les Yay. To be fair, it is a franchise with an Improbably Female Cast (hell, season three even provides the page image) and several of the more prominent canon or semi-canon relationships are between two women, but you'd think the fandom would at least periodically experiment with some het ships.

....buuuut the most prominent male character from the first season ultimately suffered from Chuck Cunningham Syndrome and has a surprisingly vast and rabid hatedom (and yet he's also arguably the show's main Ensemble Dark Horse, in part because of those reasons).

....I hesitate to say that MGLN is as bad as the worst aspects of KH fandom (Kairi is an evil slut out to interfere Sora and Riku's totally amazing and soulful and hawt gay sex!)... but only because I personally have never had firsthand experience with the more extremist factions of MGLN fandom.

_______

I mean, it'd be one thing if it were like the Naruto fandom that ships everybody with everybody else without a damn care in the world, but the biggest part of shipfic in MGLN is just the one pair.

I just realized what a Black Mage can do.

You gotta start somewhere.

Borderline? Killing the hell out of things is the whole Black Mage schtick. They aren't tanks, they don't have utility abilities, they just have spells to kill things with.

[up][up] Almost, as in, they suck taking hits (especially projectiles), they wear clothes that might as well have the words: "Hey, I'm a black mage! Kill me before I rain fiery death on your dumbass!"

Yeah.

So, what, you're going to have your tanks dress up like black mages to draw enemy attention? When doing so means that they'd lose almost the entirety of their armor, thus badly compromising their tankitude?

[up][up]And the reason wearing black mage clothes encourages people to kill you is that black mages are really good at killing things. I don't see how also being really good at dying takes away from their talents at lethality.

Equipment affects your stats, though. If mages don't use equipment suited for magery, then it logically follows that their magiocity would diminish. And then they'd be less good at killing stuff. They'd be less magey and more... whatever-you-dressed-'em-as-y.

They should at least be able to modify and enchant their clothing to accommidate.

Oh and what do you think about a really skilled White Mage or Black Mage being able dual-cast spells like a Red Mage? Because I was thinking a person could do this if they REALLY mastered their school of magic.

You gotta start somewhere.

Not a fan, personally. On account of the phrase, "like a Red Mage." Let the Reds have their special trick that nobody else can emulate. The Blacks and Whites can have exclusive access to Meteor and Holy respectively or some such.

And on the dressing like a mage thing, mages generally can't equip armor. Just doesn't work for them. If you want to know why, consult a beginner magic textbook. They wear robes or they were street clothes while surrounded by people in armor.

Donald is primarily a Black Mage, but he does also know the Cure series of spells.

However, that's about as far as I'd ever take dual-classing on a dedicated mage.

Unless it's actually a Red Mage character, who by definition has pretty much dedicated himself to being good at everything... at the cost of excellent at nothing. Basically, Red Mage is the class you use for a Crutch Character, up until your specialists manage to catch the hell up and leave him by the wayside within their respective fields.

And besides it's not like they can't request special training like a Black Mage getting training as a Mystic Knight to able to use armor and better weapons without having any penalties to magic or a White Mage (who in this universe resembles a Dn D Cleric) gets training as a Paladin to become the best Combat Medic ever.

You gotta start somewhere.

All this talk of black mages being killing machines is reminding me of FFIX...and now I'm sad.
