TLP Crash Rescue - Fixing prematurely launched TLPs and pages

Go To

Prematurely launched pages and pages that weren't fully fleshed out at the point of launching, are a big problem. Since these usually share several problems at once, this thread is aimed at re-running them through the TLP for fixing - the usual fix - or cutting them if they are too bad.

Problems this thread deals with include bad names, not enough/bad examples, unclear description, etc.

For the interested, here's a list of recently created pages. Launches

Note: Please do not request a mod to unlaunch drafts that don't have any issues besides lacking a launch notice/24hr launch notice. While 24hr launch notices are mandatory, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you see a draft's sponsor launch a TLP without an announcement, it's best to remind them of our TLP Guidelines first. If they continue to repeatedly launch drafts without a launch notice, you can report them on Ask The Tropers or the TLP Community Issues thread.

In regard to the articles that I recently created — The 110 Club, Future Timeline, Jurassic Park Legacy, Carnivora Forum, and Topix Dinosaur Forum — I was under the impression that, on TV Tropes, there is "no such thing as notability". Therefore, I went ahead and created those articles. I'm planning to expand the articles in the future, and add additional tropes.

There Is No Such Thing As Notability means, as the page says, that no work is too "un-notable" to have a page. A fully-fleshed-out, complete page. It doesn't mean that we want stub pages that have little to nothing on them besides a brief description of the work.

If you want to work on a page for a work, but don't have it in finished condition, make it in the Sandbox. namespace. Those pages are presumed to be in-progress. A page in the main wiki should be relatively complete. (I say relatively, because very few wiki pages are ever really completely finished; there's always more that can be added or corrected or made better.)

Alright, then. So would it be possible to move those articles into the Sanbox?

Sandbox.The 110 Club , Sandbox.Future Timeline , Sandbox.Jurassic Park Legacy , Sandbox.Carnivora Forum, and Sandbox.Topix Dinosaur Forum

There you go.smile Go to the existing stub pages, click on the button marked "Source" (leftmost on the lowest row of three), copy the whole thing, and then go to the appropriate Sandbox page, open it for editing, and Paste it in. Then have at them at your convenience. When you've got them relatively complete, open the source on the sandbox, copy the whole thing, and paste it into the new page in the correct namespace.

Before launching a sandbox, one should be sure that a) the page has at least 3 trope examples b) that these examples are compliant with How to Write an Example and c) the page as a description of the work.

A few more useful steps when launching stuff from sandboxes:

  1. Cut List the sandbox after you've launched it.
  2. Find an index to add your newly launched page to; see also, How Indexing Works. More than one index works, too.
  3. Add references to your work page in other pages; Entry Pimping or Crosswicking we call this.

Today's worklist, exclusing Troodon's pages is only Mid Air Refueling which was argued earlier to be not a trope.

That's three votes in favour of removing Mid Air Refueling. Any more?

The Memetic Troll YKTTW had launched incorrectly despite five hats and plenty of examples. When it was done, the YMMV part was still on the trope name, perhaps explaining why it was removed.

Is there something we can do to remedy this?

So I'm told that we can handle The Forgery (locked thread) plus Frauds And Foolies (locked thread) here.

To summarize: both launched with "two" hats and poor-to-none crosswicking.

OK, I'll note today that we are getting a "Lots of pages but not so much commentary" situation here, in other words, we need a bit more commentary on pages brought up here.

Pages brought up here, by the way:

  • Ambiguously Christian: ~The Muse did blank it; I've rolled it back, but there was discussion earlier about its tropeworthiness.
  • The Asian Critic Chick: Stub work page; creator messaged.
  • The Forgery: 4 trope examples, 2 hats, no crosswicking and there were comments on the YKTTW that it wasn't launchready. Yeah, cut and unlaunch it and hammer the launcher.
  • Frauds And Foolies: That is the same YKTTW as The Forgery?
  • Hounded: Stub work page; creator messaged.
  • Life Is A Game: The page was originally launched by ~sunandshadow, then redirected by ~Shieldage, moved back by Eddie, then re-redirected by Eddie again and the redirect then blanked by Shieldage.
  • Loch: Stub work page; creator messaged.
  • Loko Reviews: Stub work page; creator messaged.
  • Memetic Troll: Seems like a blank launch. I'll request unlaunching.
  • Planes: Fire & Rescue: Stub work page; creator messaged. From their response, it seems that they started the work page too early on to fully trope it; I'll call them here.

Also, in the "pages needing more commentary" pile: Carnivora Forum (stub work page despite emssaging), MaxOfFewTrades (long page, but no trope examples despite messaging; I am inclined to cut), Mid Air Refueling (tropeworthiness challenged, already some cut motions) and Watchdog (long page, but no trope examples).

  • Ambiguously Christian: As I said before, the draft is close, but not quite ready for launching. It does not currently have any hats, either.
  • The Asian Critic Chick: stub, no interest in the work, no need to comment.
  • TF+FAF: ~The Initial Man seems to have come back (I saw them bump a ykttw the other day), but the pages are still below standard. My desire is to send both back to YKTTW, and cut the current pages. I want to take over Frauds And Foolies.
  • Hounded: stub, no interest in the work, one comment: description is complainy.
  • Life Is A Game: wow... that's making me slightly dizzy. It'd be worse if the page time-traveled. I vote to restore the redirect until the cut list has eliminated the page.
  • Loch: stub. No interest. No comment.
  • We may need to check Team Night Saturn: this is the second related page. The various reviewers would also work on the Characters/ subpage, they don't need to be split while they're stub-sized.
  • Planes II: stub. Interested in the work. Not enough information to start a page.

[up] Sounds like a good plan. Had been a temporary edit to help ~sunandshadow reclaim and repurpose the idea as a streamlined subtype rather than a standalone trope. It's currently part of Groundhog Peggy Sue. Restored the redirect on the Life Is A Game page, posted it to the cut list. Thanks for helping to keep the wiki healthy.

Not the creator in question, but I hope no one minds if I re-create this one. I spotted it earlier and had intended to flesh it out myself since I've been following the work in question, but it looks like y'all got to it first.

Today's work worklist involves only one item, Jack Septic Eye, a stub work page whose creator has been messaged.

Regarding the following:

~St Fan, methinks I'll call ~Redmess and ~Little Miss Cute in, the original page creators; if they or anybody else can't improve the page, we'll prolly have to cut them (especially the latter, as most of its examples are poor).

~Specialist290: Feel free to do so; that the page was cut in the past for being a stub is not a prejudice against restoring it in better form now.

[up][up] The "important" part isn't the need to refuel, it's "a flying gas station is in a work". That's not a plot point: that's a type of chair (a stool) being used in a work.

Bespin's cloud city (Owned by Lando Calrissian) from Star Wars is a mining and gas station that functions without a planet to land on, making it a refueling station In Space. Plot-relevent stuff happens there, too. The need to refuel could be handled by landing, midair refuel, or collecting and processing fuel in a ramscoop.

Now that I'm talking about it, I think I'm seeing Missing Supertrope Syndrome... this is "the car breaks down in front of the strange castle" for flight.

Just came across Civilization Of Omnidisciplinary Geniuses, which does not have any YKTTW associated with it, and its history only goes as far as 4 edits, back to November 2013. While the description seems clear about what the trope is, I find the following problems in it:

  1. It seems unnecessarily focused on portraying the concept as "bad", in the sense that it's assuming that since in post-industrial revolution real life specialization is increasingly becoming the norm, the same must hold true for future human societies. (Nevermind the fact that a Singularity could easily boost human mental capacities into enough Super-Intelligence to justify the trope.)

  2. It's startling that there are only three examples in total in the list.

Today's worklist:

Frauds And Foolies and The Forgery: I agree with the proposal to cut and re-YKTTW.

Mid Air Refueling: I do stand by my statement from before - it's used as a plot device in several instances in the examples and does advance the story.

Mid Air Refueling: There are a handful of examples where it gets used in a plot-relevant manner, but not in a consistent way as a trope. Like I said, there's a kernel of a trope there (something like Refueling Drama in particular), but that page sure as hell ain't it.

Civilization Of Omnidisciplinary Geniuses: Didn't we discuss this before? I could've sworn we had... yes, yes we did.

Men Are Tough Women Are Delicate: I don't... this is weird. Axe it.

Judging by the discussion about the trope in question in this page, yeah, the final decision seems to be "kick it back to YKTTW".

And for the record, about Proud Warrior Race Guy... I think somewhere in the workshops it has been agreed that the "Proud X Race Guy" tropes are really more "Proud X Race" tropes, but the first ones to be made had the misfortune of being created by people who didn't fully think the naming and defining stages through, and thus accidentally made them character tropes when they are race tropes. Note how the more recently made "Proud X Race" trope(s) (e.g. Proud Merchant Race) do not have "Guy" attached to them.
