Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

NRLEP tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/NoRealLifeExamplesPlease via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]

LRLEO tag:

%% Trope was declared Administrivia/LimitedRealLifeExamplesOnly via crowner by the Real Life Maintenance thread: [crowner link]
%%The following restrictions apply: [list restriction(s) here]

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

Depraved Kids' Show Host: I agree it's suitable for NRLEP fodder as gossip about RL people.

Disney Death: Not only the death aspect, but as the description says it's also an Ending Trope, and RL doesn't have a story writer or a story to end, so yeah I can see that being fit for addition to the crowner.

A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Those examples are all, as far as I can tell, shoehorning, so losing them isn't going to make me lose any sleep, and there is precedent for NRLEPing things that can't happen in real life because the technology or physics currently known doesn't allow it, so I don't think adding it to the crowner is going to be a problem.

Adding them all in a minute.

[edit] Also, I just realized how many crowner entries there are, so we should probably wait to add more crowner options until the current entries are addressed, saving any further additions for the next crowner.

[T]he hosts aren't portrayed as "depraved" within the work.

And, as an aside, if you're really concerned about NRLEP entries, it would be appreciated if you contributed to the conversation in this thread while the issue is active, not jump in after the vote has been called and the edit to the NRLEP page requested in the edit request thread.

I read those entries. Full of nattery comments and judgements. So yes, even if they has roots in reality they're still gossip. And even so we don't need to have tales of horrible people here, especially when it devolves into a competition about who can find the juiciest piece of news. Which still isn't going into the issue that it's not the trope in the first place, as mentioned before.

"Depraved within the work." Is this another of those things that needs a creator.

In this case it's an integral part of the character. A Real Life example is just where someone depraved happens to be in that line of work.

Should Cool and Unusual Punishment have an RL section? It's not a size issue (most of the other folders are at least as large, to the point of heading towards bumping against the 400K character limit; That's not this thread, but I'll be addressing that after CAUP's RL section is decided), but "cool" strikes me as a subjective judgement call, which in general are kind of frowned upon for RL subjects. Also, setting aside formatting issues (also not this thread) I noticed more than a few generic and Zero Context Example entries, which while historically not usually enough of a reason on its own for NRLEP it certainly doesn't help the argument against NRLEP.

^ Also, while helping out is appreciated, when making the edit request in the thread for editing locked pages, Please put the entry to be edited in into its final format, so the mod du jour (usually Willbyr) can just copy/paste it onto the NRLEP page (as a mod they can edit posts by others).

As demonstrated with AI they can extrapolate from the crowner entry, but given all that's on the mod staff's figurative plate it makes things a bit quicker for them to address.

^One person's cool is another person's not cool. I find several of those extremely distasteful at best. I say it should be NRLEP.

Cracked ran an article some time ago about a judge who gives the guilty a choice between the standard fines&jail platter and a more original punishment, such as a woman who abandoned a sack full of kittens in the woods having to spend a night out there herself, without camping equipment. Since the defendants do get a choice, I find it impressive, but many in the comment section found it anywhere from ridiculous to horrible.

Since many other examples are equally subjective, I say nuke the RL section.

Cool and Unusual Punishment isn't really about punishments being cool. It's about them being unusual or creative, and effective (or at least believed to be). It doesn't really hurt the trope if the effectivity is subjectively perceived as high or low.

Forcing prisoners to wear pink, for instance, is a good example of the trope.

I don't see a problem with having Real Life examples there. A little cleanup, maybe, but I think it works as it is.

The name is a bit misleading, but I think Another Duck is right about this one.
EDIT: It seems that the consensus is to keep Flash Step's RL section. Should I add it to Keep Real Life Examples, since I've brought it up a week ago?

Whenever we're discussing tropes, never rely on the trope name to figure out the exact meaning of the trope.

Yeah, Flash Step looks like a keep.

Looking at Never Live It Down again: the last two edits to that page, I had to purge for being recent.

Plus, does this recently added example even fit: "Jamaica is known as a land where everyone looks and talks, and smokes marijuana like Bob Marley."

This trope is supposed to be "known for something someone only did once." I suppose you could say that it fits, as stereotyping an entire nation based on a single citizen, but there's a LOT more that seem iffy. I'm starting to wonder if maintaining this thing is worth the effort.

Stereotyping is not that trope.

How much maintenance are we talking about here?

Also kind of funny, since I just (quite literally the last thing I did before heading over here) watched a You Tube video about someone not living a mistake down.

Hmm. Doesn't look like Cool and Unusual Punishment is getting any traction. Oh well.

Anyway, I don't know of anything waiting for a crowner entry slot, but just in case I made up a Real Life Section Maintenance 19 crowner that I'll holler to have hooked in a second. That way, any new option that does come up can just be added instead of waiting to make the crowner and add the option.

Noble Bigot has a fairly large RL section. I say it needs to go, as we're not in the business of declaring real people bigots, noble or otherwise.

Gonna agree with that. Some of it is also shoehorning, and should be in Values Dissonance (which doesn't allow real life examples either) or something like that. Otherwise you could probably put in just about any historical person who can be seen as noble, since what was progressive at that time might be bigoted today.

I'm going to argue against making Dirty Cop NRLEP, with one limitation: The only acceptable RL examples are of individual Law Enforcement Officers who were actually, legally, tried and convicted of corruption. No "the cops in this city..." or "This division of <Law enforcement agency> in general..." or "<LEO> was accused.../indicted.../ widely believed to be..."

It's not a calling people villains thing. A dirty cop doesn't have to be the villain ( or even a villain) of the work.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
   22 (Yeas:28 Nays:6) 4.67 : 1
Role-Ending Misdemeanor (LRLEO proposal): no examples for adult film performers or adult film roles should be allowed (discussed here and here). The content policy prohibits pornographic films from being listed as works, and other related tropes (such as Parallel Porn Titles and Porn Names) have already been declared NRLEP to remove references to them. Added to Crowner Feb 26, 2024 (CLOSED)
   12 (Yeas:17 Nays:5) 3.40 : 1
Half-Human Hybrid: Highly unlikely to be possible in real life considering how different humans are from all other known species. The real life section is full of speculation and unproven claims. Added to crowner Mar 22, 2024 (CLOSED)
   -5 (Yeas:0 Nays:5)
Alliterative Name (LRLEO proposal): It\'s currently NRLEP because it\'s too common, but I think celebrities and historical figures might be worth adding.

Sorry, just read I had to propose it in the thread first.
