Real Life section maintenance (New Crowner 19 Feb 2024)

Go To

Note: If a newly launched trope was already given a No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only designation while it was being drafted on the Trope Launch Pad, additions to the proper index do not need to go through this thread. Instead, simply ask the mods to add the trope via this thread.

This is the thread to report tropes with problematic Real Life sections.

Common problems include:

Real Life sections on the wiki are kept as long as they don't become a problem. If you find an article with such problems, report it here. Please note that the purpose of this thread is to clean up and maintain real life sections, not raze them. Cutting should be treated as a last resort, so please only suggest cutting RL sections or a subset thereof you think the examples in question are completely unsalvageable.

If historical RL examples are not causing any problems, consider whether it would be better to propose a No Recent Examples, Please! (via this forum thread) for RL instead of NRLEP. If RL examples are causing problems only for certain subjects, consider whether a Limited Real Life Examples Only restriction would be preferable to NRLEP.

If you think a trope should be No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only, then this thread is the place to discuss it. However, please check Keep Real Life Examples first to see if it has already been brought up in the past. If not, state the reasons and add it to the crowner.

Before adding to the crowner:

  • The trope should be proposed in the thread, along with reasons for why a crowner is necessary instead of a cleanup.
  • There must be support from others in thread.
  • Any objections should be addressed.
  • Allow a minimum of 24 hours for discussion.

When adding to the crowner:

  • Be sure to add the trope name, a link to where the discussion started, the reasons for crownering, whether the restriction being proposed is NRLEP or LRLEO (and in the latter case, which subject(s) the restriction would be for), and the date added.
  • Announce in thread that you are adding the item.
  • An ATT advert should be made as well (batch items together if more than one trope goes up in a day).

In order for a crowner to pass:

  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • There must be a 2:1 ratio
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple extra days to see if any more votes come in
  • Once passed, tropes must be indexed on the appropriate NRLEP index
  • Should the vote fail, the trope should be indexed on KRLE page

Sex Tropes, Rape and Sexual Harassment Tropes, and Morality Tropes are banned from having RL sections so tropes under those indexes don't need crowner vote.

Crowner entries that have already been called will have "(CLOSED)" appended to them — and are no longer open for discussion.

After bringing up a trope for discussion, please wait at least a day for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

Notes:
  • This thread is not for general discussion regarding policies for Real Life sections or crowners. Please take those conversations to this Wiki Talk thread.
  • Do not try to overturn previous No Real Life Examples, Please! or Limited Real Life Examples Only decisions without a convincing argument.
  • As mentioned here, the consensus is that NRLEP warnings in trope page descriptions can use bold text so that they stand out.
  • The [[noreallife]] tag doesn't currently work. This is a deprecated tag that was introduced many years ago — originally, it would have displayed a NRLEP warning banner when you edited the page. However, there's been some staff conversation (Feb 2024) about what a new technical solution might look like, so we'd advise against deleting these from pages, at least until we have a decision as to whether it'll be fixed or replaced.

I guess what I'm getting at is that the whole page needs to go to TRS because the definition as written is all over the place, and says nothing about head shots being the only assured method of killing something, and the examples are even worse.

I tried to open a thread in TRS but no slots are available. In the meantime, I think what we can do is cut the Real Life section.

Calling Informed Loner: Added 25th Feb '14 at 09:02:44 PM, 9:1 (10)

As for the rest, IIRC none of those below the 2:1 ratio have moved all that much in the past few days or so, so I think we can conclude this crowner.

Informed Location, The Friends Who Never Hang, and Alleged Lookalikes are all 2:1 or worse against NRLEP, but with none having a minimum of 10 votes I don't think we can count them as having "consensus to keep" for the sake of the footnoted items on the Keep Real Life Examples page.

[up]OBJECTION! Not having consensus to cut means having consensus to keep. Shouldn't the default position be to keep UNLESS there's consensus to cut?

Agreed. Much as I'd like to see Alleged Lookalikes go NRLEP, the people have spoken by their silence.

(I'd still like to see the 10-vote minimum for taking action, because it should be harder to take action than to not take action)

EDIT: Actually, looks like I voted that down. I changed my mind, but it doesn't look like changing my vote is going to make a difference, so I'm not going to bother.

The lack of 2:1 not to NRLEP means it won't get added to the Keep Real Life Examples page.

The lack of a 2:1 to NRLEP means they won't be cut at this time.

They will have to be kept clean and conform to wiki standards.

I think it's time to call Madonna-Whore Complex and Dawson Casting. Both can still be altered by a single vote, but after over two weeks I think all the votes that are going to be cast have been.

Edit: Also, I want to see some of the arguments the people who keep voting down all these Informed Whatever tropes are using, because the way things currently look is kind of ridiculous.

It looks like Madonna-Whore Complex (added 14th Feb '14 at 09:41:17 PM) picked up some "yes" votes last night, putting it at 2.14:1 with 22 votes total, so calling.

As that's the last item that was even near being called to be made NRLEP, I think it's time to close out this crowner and formally start up the new one I linked to a bit ago. While in an idealnote  world those items would remain up for voting, at about 20 entries the current crowner has gotten too unwieldy, and there are other tropes pending review for potential NRLEP status.

2633: My argument is that if the only reason the NRLEP a trope is that Real Life examples are impossible (not chairs, or contentious, or whatever) and there's no sign anyone attempted to shoehorn RL examples in, NRLEP is a solution in search of a problem.

ActionDad.Real Life and PapaWolf.Real Life seem to be pretty much duplicating each other in the types of examples. Ie, dads protecting their kids. What distinctions should be made in the types of examples?

Also, Papa Wolf seems to be about a Bumbling Dad become an Action Dad. Bumbling Dad is something that I think would be something we don't want Real Life examples of.

World of Badass has a Real Life section in which the examples seem terribly shoehorned. It lists thing like samurai, which are not a setting or a story but a social class, and animals, which again are not a setting or a story but a category of life-form. I also think that one would have an awfully hard time justifying that claim that every animal or every Japanese person is a badass in the sense that we use the trope.

Even Sparta is not an example. The overwhelming majority of those living in Sparta and its domains were helots, who were basically slaves.

Overall, I think that not only to the current examples need to be removed, but the trope needs to be made a No Real Life Examples Please trope. Even if one were to accept the idea of real life people as "characters" it would be impossible to argue that every person in Real Life is a badass in the TV Tropes meaning of the term.

On Ask The Tropers it was argued that For the Evulz should be cut as no one really does act this way.

Actually they do. As well as the typical GIFT examples there was one since deleted, Aaron Joseph Streets, who got off on the evil of killing. I'm sure there would be others.

You could argue that it should be cut for being a villain trope but there is sufficient evidence this really does happen.

As a villain trope, For the Evulz should be NRLEP's. But there are people who get off on being bastards. Which leads to another reason for not having real life examples.

I study true crime as a hobby, and some of the real life examples of for the evulz are effin' creepy. (And gross, disgusting, and nausea-inducing.) We may not have them at this point, but people putting in real life examples of them ever would hit either or both creepy and Content Policy issues.

So For the Evulz should be added. I'll wait a bit to see what others' thoughts might be.

Literally my only concern about NRLEPing it would be presenting the impression that it's something that doesn't happen in reality at all. I generally don't find For the Evulz villains that compelling, but it's always annoyed me when people say they're "unrealistic".

Besides that caveat, though, I agree with removing the section. I don't see the GIFT stuff doing any good, and I definitely don't think we need the serial killers.

Yeah, I can't see For the Evulz needing an RL section, even if the examples there weren't all generic (which are prohibited under wiki policy). Adding.

(The page has other, numerous issues, but those are beyond the scope of this thread. tongue )

As for Board to Death, it technically meets the NRLEP requirements, but I added it (in a fit of "fingers faster than brain") back when the crowner wasn't hooked to this thread, so I'm going to wait a bit longer now that it's publicly visible, even if the current vote doesn't exactly look like it's going to change significantly within the next few hours. Likewise with Demonic Spiders.

Came Back Wrong has one RL example, involving brain damage due to oxygen deprivation. Based on the trope description, this is one I would argue can't have RL examples.

@nrjxll, we handle that by not using 'unrealistic' as a NRLEP reason, because it makes no sense. For the Evulz is hardly the first 'real is possible' trope to be NRLEP'd; just pick a reason, from creepiness to calling people evil to extreme difficulty in getting people not to make a mess of the relevant section and so on. Heck, Sex and Rape Tropes are NRLEP by default. FtE being a Villain trope and one that could attract creepiness is plenty of reason.

[nja]I don't support cutting Board to Death as a villain trope, I support cutting it because how is it POSSIBLE in real life?

^ How is Board to Death not possible? There's nothing supernatural or extraterrestrial required for some hypothetical RL Big Bad to brag about their plan and then kill off anyone who heard it. That it's use in fiction is for the audience of a work to get caught up on the villains plan doesn't mean the rest of it couldn't occur in RL (if being on the stupid side).

Also, "Villain trope" is a lot less typing while still being a perfectly valid reason for an NRLEP listing. tongue

Crown Description:

Vote up to either forbid all real life examples (No Real Life Examples Please) or forbid real life examples for specific subjects (Limited Real Life Examples Only); vote down to Keep Real Life Examples. To add a trope to a No Real Life Examples Please index or the Limited Real Life Examples Only index, its crowner option must meet the following criteria:
  • Stable 2:1 ratio needed for NRLEP or LRLEO
  • Must have been up for a minimum of a week
  • If the vote is exactly 2:1 or +/- 1 vote from that, give it a couple of extra days to see if more votes come in.

After you bring up a trope for discussion, please try to wait at least a day or so for feedback before adding it to the crowner.

If an item has a (CLOSED) note, there is no need to vote on it: the result has already been decided and it's no longer up for discussion.
