General Page Quote Discussion:

Go To

This thread is for general discussion of page quotes, whether to change, move or remove them.

Unused quotes should be put on a Quotes Wiki page (just replace the namespace in the URL of the wiki page you are making a quotes page for with Quotes/) or, if they don't have an article, on Quotes Looking for an Article.

Image captions are discussed elsewhere and have their own thread in the Image Pickin' forum.

The pothole on You Can Talk? has to go, right?

  1. Yes.
  2. What does the "(rewritten)" in the attribution line mean? I looked at the page linked and it doesn't seem to be anything in the actual title. And whatever it is, it's not necessary to understand the quote.
  3. This is another of those "just restates the trope name" quotes that doesn't actually add anything. Do we have anything better?

[up] Bizarro Episode: Terrible page quote. None of the ones on the Quotes tab are viable either. I say leave it without a quote for now unless we have better suggestions.

Movie Superheroes Wear Black: Not great, but far better than any of the ones on the Quotes Tab. I could take or leave this one. On balance, I'd say keep it unless we have better suggestions.

[up]Re Movie Superheroes Wear Black: The problem isn't that it's a terrible quote. It's a duplicate to Spandex, Latex, or Leather.

[up] Well, in that case, kill it. The page doesn't need a quote.

EDIT: Wait, you changed the quote yourself 5 days ago, two days before asking for more input. What exactly do you need input on? The current quote is fine.

... Did I now?

Crud, I completely forgot about that. Ignore that, then. I must have had a massive brain fart.

The quote Johnnyfog added to Costume Porn is from a video complaining about the trope. Remove?

On the subject of johnnyfog, for months now he's been adding lots of long, complaining quotes to quotes pages. This is already being discussed in Ask The Tropers, but I thought it ought to be brought up here as well.

The page quote for Rule of Sean Connery has a couple of potholes in it, but I don't think the quote really works without the one for Highlander 2. Is there something else that would work better, and not require any potholing?

(Oh, and not being a quote by any "internet critic" wankers would be nice. tongue )

Pilot has two page quotes which say more or less the same thing. The Pulp Fiction is a bit long, but it can be cut down to three lines or even just one. The RebelTaxi quote is short and concise, but less funny.

Which goes?

Edit: Actually, now I see that the second quote was added just this February, so I imagine it can be shunted to the quotes page without much fuss. Maybe the first quote could still be cut down a bit, though. (Start from "...You're aware that there's an invention...?")

The quote on Beauty Is Never Tarnished only seems to be going by the title. There are some quotes on the quotes page that look better.

[up][up]I prefer the second one, but just because I don't really like dialogues.

[up]The Silly Novels by Lady Novelists one seems nice. The pothole to Mary Sue would need to be axed, though.

[up][up]Although a couple of them seem to border on complaining, I agree they still inform the trope better.

[up]Yeah, I like that quote best as well (and the pothole should be taken out no matter what it linked to).

The Question has three quotes. Not really sure that any of them are all that suited towards being page quotes, however, and I don't follow the character so I can't provide anything that would be better suited (even after checking the quotes tab).

[up]As someone who knows nothing of the series/character, I like the first one best.

Also, the page "quote" of Fanfic.Moon Daughter is a whole chunk of excerpt from one of the fic's chapters, which I'm pretty sure is not allowed. Shall I drop the axe?

I'm pretty sure The Question has only two quotes, the first of which is two paragraphs.

The first is better, but kind of long.

Judging that it has a separate markup, I don't think so. But maybe it could be combined?

[up]I'm not a fan of it either, but the quotes page doesn't really have anything better. Shortening it might help though...

how does " In the end, every heart returns to the darkness whence it came!" work?

Knight Fever has this long winded dialogue that doesn't seem to say anything about the trope (not in a clear way, anyway).
