Let's say you work was faithfully adapted and it got a poster (or a few) that was accurate to the work's content, what would it look like? And if he had a tagline what would it be? Okay I'll start.

Mermaiden and Glacus: A first person POV shot of a shy looking boy in a hospital gown. It'd look like we were viewing him from the inside of an aquarium, the tank wall having drawings of dragons, knights and mermaids coupled with things from no human mythology on it. The boy looks mixed race, like his dad's white, while his mum's Brazilian, his eyes are completely black, big and wet looking.

The Life And Times Of Josie and Tariq: Two four year olds, lounging under what resembles common artistic interpretation of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, they boy being waited upon by demons, the girl by angels. Tagline: um... It's okay his mum and her dad said it's alright.

"Listening To The City" would probably have a corpse on cobbled streets, a man walking way from it, his back to us, and a cigarette floating in the blood, with some faint smoke still trailing above it. Tagline: "The city screams. Will you listen?"

Yeah, any film made would probably be really pulpy. It's not all like that, that's just probably the most traditionally badass image in the work. And taglines need to be corny.

Saint Cyprian's Academy For The Magical Sciences: Your standard class picture, only with witches, dwarves, satyrs, centaurs, talking animals ecetera. The picture would have things like "Not fun as it looks." and "Tabitha and Adam Steven's if Bill Asher was a an alco going through a bitter divorce." scrawled on it.

Hmmm... I wonder where my old "trailers" thread went? That was fun.

  • Always a Hero: The Hero, Cora, stands in the center of the poster, with her arms crossed and looking smug. Dreamworks Face optional. A fairy flies next to her face, looking exasperated and with a Face Palm expression. Behind her, we can see the heads of her other companions: Mariselle (blonde and bodacious) looking worried, Danbarre (Bald Of Awesome and The Goggles Do Nothing) looking frustrated, and Jasper (The White Prince) is awestruck. Behind her, a host of things from her journeys: Mango the red drake, marmoset-like people (dwarves), Horny Vikings-esque elves, a big black dragon, evil ragdolls, and many more.

Possible Taglines: "She has no clue. They have no choice.
"They needed a miracle. Unfortunately, they got one."
"Forget your anniversary? She forgot saving the world."

I'll add others when I think of them.

A possible teaser poster would be a gigantic zeppelin flying past the Statue of Liberty, but she is holding a wrench instead of a book and has goggles instead of a pointed wreath. The city of New York would be in the distance .

Oh boy, I love making fake movie posters for my works.

Fred and Ted's Totally Infected Adventure: Left 2 Die in the Deep South. Already has a little poster thing. Left 4 Dead fanfic, has Fred (smoker) on the left, holding up four fingers. Ted (hunter) on the right, holding up two. Ed (tank) leaping in the background. Still a promotional teaser at this point, as I've not yet finished the second act.

The Mouse in the Doorway. "You will see such pretty things." Original story. Camera is on a bed, shows close-up of Happy the gerbil's eye, open. Happy is lying on her side, facing the wall and thus the camera. The camera shows, behind her, an open doorway. There is Thomas, the old mouse, standing there, watching her.

Murder, Plain and Simple. Alternative title: The Facebook Theater Show. Original story. I tried to make this poster, myself, but it sucked. Shows a theater stage, with crowd of people in their chairs, watching. On the stage is a dead Sean, knife sticking out of his back. You the stickman is standing by the microphone, startled. Fentzy, ace scientist person, is kneeling by the corpse, examining it. Poking their heads out of Stage Left are Jordan (in trilby) and J...ah.

Poking his head out of Stage Right is Bones (in fedora).

Unnamed sequel to "Murder, Plain and Simple." Park, middle of the night. Jalani, head blasted off, is lying, dead, in the middle. You the stickman is sitting at a nearby bench, head in palms. Fentzy, Jordan, Jane, and Bones are gathered around the corpse, examining it. Nearby is a snack bar, where you can just about see a corpse's leg poking out around the corner, and a crowd of people walking towards it. In the distance is a forest, and if you look closely enough, you can see the slender man standing, watching. *

Me and My Family of Friends. "A family of horrific animals. A narrator who you just can't trust. A dragon named Steve." A book on a table. Name of book is "Me and My Family of Friends." Blood drops are on the table.

Dark Chao Adventures. "Living life.. one step at a time!" Sonic fan-fic series. Becomes the greatest thing I've ever written. Since this series is just so damn big, one movie poster couldn't possibly represent the whole series. So I'm dividing it as little as I can:

Dark Chao Adventures Part 1: The Beginnings. "Living life.. one step at a time!" (Seasons One and Two) The Dark Garden. Hints of its future apocalyptic counterpart. Shade (grey Dark chao), Dark (normal Dark chao), and Chao are gathered in there, looking at each other angrily. Mephiles (from the Sonic game that shall not be named) is watching from afar.

Dark Chao Adventures Part 2: Rise of the Beta Avengers! "Enter the MILKMAN and Friends." (Seasons Three and Four) A forest. A grand city is seen in the background. The protagonists (just a buncha chao) are seen moving forward. Atop one skyscraper in the background are four dark figures. You can't see them.

Dark Chao Adventures Part 3: The Grey Journey. "It's time to kick ass, Shade." (Seasons Five and Six) Shade, now a Dark/Swim chao, wearing a headband and carrying a crowbar, standing in the Dark Garden (the Garden is covered in ashes), alone. Somewhere, you see a very, very subtle eyestalk.

Dark Chao Adventures Part 4: The End. (The entire Season Seven) This one would require multiple different posters. One would be Shadow (green Dark chao) riding a horse, on a hill overlooking a futuristic city. "The Gatekeepers will not save your world." Another would be of Shade walking down a dark street at night. "A lone, slender shadow walks at night." Another would be of Dark in a limestone cave, pointing a knife to his chest. "Here's an adventure too dark for the Darks." Yet another would be of Red (red Dark chao) wandering down a country road. "Along the way, I'll be your guide, just step inside..." And then yet ANOTHER would be a parody of the Metropolis part 2 cover, with John (white Dark chao)'s face surrounded by pictures of traumatic events. "Bricks." Then we'd have ANOTHER, of all the protagonists in New York City, running away from a giant grey cloud/wall of death. "And the lamb lies down for our heroes."

Yeah, Season Seven is that big that it warrants several different pictures. Anyway, THEN there's Dark Chao Adventures: Bloody Fear. "Stupid name, scary stories." (Halloween 2007 and 2008) The poster would be of Metal Sonic's rusty face, with one eye broken.

And Dark Chao Adventures: Sinister Serials of the Dark. (Halloween 2010) Multiple different posters, of course. It's a Season Seven story, technically. There would be a number of posters of different shots of the Sancheria forest, each one with the slender man somewhere hidden. "I did see him." There'd be a shot of the Tenebrosity cemetery, with the huge factory in the background. No tagline. There'd be a shot of the endless highway, with a faint man in the far distance. "I did see him." Finally, there'd definitely be one of a dark, empty subway station. A train has pulled up, the door opened. You can't see inside; it's a beam of light. "Meet Ulysses. Meet Ulysses' worst nightmare."

Dark Chao Adventures: The Secret City. "Meet the Tour Guide, May 29, 2009." (DCA 09) The magnificent city from Part 2's poster is the centerpiece of this one. There are occasional paint splashes of red. In some windows, you can see a red, screaming face. In others, you can see a shadow of a human. In the distance is a huge clocktower. Standing atop it is a lone hooded figure.

...y'know what? No, I'm gonna stop here. I'm.. yeah. I'm gonna stop here. I could go on for hours about various film posters for DCA, alone. But I won't.

Mine would be the really cliched one with the protagonist in the centre, holding something plot-relevant, and a love interest/mentor figure on either side, and a dark, dramatic background. So it would have Caroline (21, dark blonde hair pinned back) in the middle, with maybe a sheet of paper and a pen, looking overwhelmed; Joseph (24, tall, dark brown hair) on her left, looking determined; and Kestrel (27, long dark hair blowing dramatically back from her face), looking knowing and mysterious. Maybe some kind of steampunk-y city in the background, and the sky would be dark and stormy. All of them would be played by ridiculously attractive actors, of course.

My (Horrible) Version: The hero, in his typical garb, advances toward the "camera" from the rightmost third of the poster, with a grinning ghost flying around him, tail twisting like graffiti across his body; in the background, you can see the rubble from a tombstone. The background is white, with virtually nothing but the tagline (RISE AND REBEL) on the leftmost side, and the title right below that. Everything is in grayscale (or with stylish shading, whatever that entails) except for one detail: you can see a glowing red eye pulsing from the hero's Peek A Bangs.

Hollywood's (Horrible) Version: In a brilliant display of Completely Missing The Point, something like this.

I just linked to something Twilight-related. Does that make me...gasp! A troll?!

I read this topic and immediately got 2 images in my head for my work tentatively titled Angel’s Guardian.

Both images are taken in a small clearing in the New England woods, and both have Ace in the center.

In the first it’s very early spring, the sky is overcast, and she is young and terrified, hair complete disheveled, and she’s wearing ill-fitting camo and a Read Cross armband. In her left hand she holds a vial of blood, knuckles completely white like she’s clutching it for dear life. Her right hand is being griped by a tiny frightened 5 year old girl. In the background a young couple, in outfits similar to Ace’s, cling to each other like the world is ending. In the foreground an ominous figure in all black (except for a Read Cross armband) lurks with his face obscured by the hood of his coat. Near him a small boy hides in the grass.

I the second it’s the same spot but mid summer. Ace is more mature her hair is tied neatly and her cloths fit. In her left hand she holds a syringe high above head, and her look is pure defiance. The little boy and little girl are now teenagers and holding hands with each other. The couple in the background are calm, mature, and holding a baby. The figure in black has removed his hood and has the faintest trace of a smile.

Frankly, I don't know what I would answer here - my only finished work is my comics, and they're probably unfilmable (even as a TV series) for multiple reasons. As for my Post-Cyberpunk current work, I don't know that one either. My personal mental image is the stereotypical "lines of code cover" with a hole torn in the center to show a Standard Starship Scuffle (this makes sense in context). What Hollywood would likely use, though, I'm less certain of. Probably something from the virtual setting - I have no attractive protagonists in the real world, but virtual worlds are something else entirely.

[up]Cheap answer! What would the book cover look like then?

  • Ulfheidin: The poster would be a snowy field under a night sky with a single star.
    • "Some people turn out to be real monsters, but one have to remember that some monsters are good..."

  • The Mc Conri Chronicles: The poster would be an RagtagBunchOfMisfits charging out of the mist, wolves runing here and there in their ranks and crows and ravens are flying overhead. Most of them are still in the mist and can only be seen as contours. Only those in the center have left the mist and he one in the middle wears a Tam O'Shanter and a kilt and holds a Fiery Cross/Crann Tara with both hands. (It takes place in Britain, so the burning cross is the Scotish call to arms, not a symbol of the KKK.)
    • "For Seventeen milennia have they they fought in the shadows. Why? They want us to survive the Age of Wolves. Do you still seek to know?"

  • A Wizards tale: The poster would be a table with a Bible, a quarterstaff, a black feather, a Tam O' Shanter, a striped scarf, a pistol, a basket-hilted broadsword and a dog's collar.
    • "When they scream, 'Burn the witch!!!, be glad that you are a wizard!"

Heaven's Lights would have my four main characters (and possibly Cyrus too) with their arms crossed, looking badass, with a backdrop of a nebula and a ship taking off in the background. The individual characters might get their own posters too, with Kaiya and Reina casting a magic circle, Faraday holding a gun and looking badass, and Rutherford angsting like he does. Oh, and there would probably be one with Kaiya and Zialana standing back to back looking angsty. You can tell my novel is serious business :P

  • Bellua: A woman(Kara, one of the protagonists) is climbing onboard a parked steam locomotive. The station is full, but a particular figure stands in the background. All that is visible of it is its dark figure and wide grin.
    • Tagline: "Beware the beasts." (Lame and senseless at first, but when you finish the book...)

  • Foreign Life: A tall young man stands with a hand on his waist and a big grin on his face (Liam, wearing a Badass Longcoat). On the right side is a girl (Alice, wearing normal civilian attire) with a very shocked expression. Between them stands a little alien, and the background is basically an Ascetic Aesthetic room.
    • Tagline: "Are you a hero?" or something of the sort.

Yes. I am very bad at this. >_<

For Endless Conflict: (Though I hope it doesn't get adapted into a movie without a damn good case of Adaptation Distillation.)

  • One shot a third person POV against a burning bridge in a rainstorm as Anzan and Mat charge at each other Single-Stroke Battle style. The exact scene is right at the climax.
  • A second version is a composite image. In the center shows a fierce battle with gunfire and explosions around our main characters in a sideways POV. Among the details visible there is a crashed gunship not far away a field of grass next to the irrigation ditch they are in. This part is directly lifted off the chapter "Counterattack! Two Great Armies Clash!". Other superimposed images around this show other main and recurring characters like Swordmaster Khornan, Anzan, Samantha Watkins and Judicator Jornal.
  • A third version cuts the crap of lifting scenes and provides a Cast Pyramid similar to some of the Star Wars posters. (Complete with Stab the Sky.)

For my Harry Potter fanfic series "The Four Witches," there would be two posters, one for each book that I've finished so far:

The Four Witches Go to Hogwarts: Hogwarts castle is in the middle of the poster with each of the four main girls in a corner, with each corner in their house color. The girls are just shown in a shoulders-up view (so a bust but not meaning a focus on their boobs!), Galaxy Baghill (Gryffindor) in the top left, with a red tint, Bunny Simmons (Hufflepuff) in the top right with yellow, Rose Weasley (Ravenclaw) in the bottom right with blue, and Serena Tippet (Slytherin) in green on the bottom left. The tagline is, "A new generation. A new era."

Serena Tippet and the Monster of Slytherin: In the top middle of the poster, a snake circling a thestral. Andromeda and Libra Elm's busts are shown in the very middle, with Serena Tippet, Bianca Garbel and Rebecca Dursley underneath them (these are all Slytherin students from my story, the two Stellar Name sisters are on a different side than the other three). Unfortunately I can't think of a good tagline for this one aside from "Discord begins. The monster strikes." And in case anyone's wondering, the titular monster is NOT the old basilisk, it's something else.
