"Let's get on with the reaction, why don't we?"
BSL's Reaction Asylum is a reaction channel hosted by bloodspittinglizard (Or BSL for short). Inspired by watching other reactors, he created the channel on February 19th, 2013. He reacts to YouTube Poop, animations, Gmod videos, and whatever else he feels like or his fans suggest.
Tropes relating to BSL's Reaction Asylum:
- Abandoned Catchphrase: His "Don't screencap me" phrase is dropped due to him not caring (to an extentnote ) anymore about screencaps of him.
- Aborted Arc: BSL was going to do a reaction with Abraham Foulkes, a fellow reactor, but didn't come into place since the latter left YouTube.
- April Fools: In his April 1st 2015 video, which was supposed to be a reaction to EmperorLemon's Spingebill Collection 2, complete with a surprised face in the thumbnail, he displays the video with him sleeping behind his computer screen for the entire video.
- Aside Glance: He does this often whenever weird or freaky stuff appears. Seen more when he's reacting at an angled position. Some examples include:
- The beginning of his 133rd reaction has him looking at his monitor (possibly at the title) and slowly turns to the camera.
- During his "Peter Parker Refuses To Eat His Vegetables" reaction, he says "You're just at the bottom of everything aren't you?" which causes him to look at the camera.
- After an...interesting sound in the "Hotel Mario YTP Collab", BSL slowly looks at the camera and asks "What was that?".
- Audience Participation:
- As of 2018, he now has a Master List video where people in the comments can request what videos BSL should react to.
- He asks his viewers to give him a name for his ass during a segment in the "Family Food" reaction.
- Borrowed Catchphrase: His regular phrase for his intro in his "Drake and Josh YTP Collab" reaction is instead replaced by "WHAT UP!? IT'S DASHIE!".
- Buffy Speak: Happens pretty often:BSL: Let's get on with the thing with the stuff!
- The Cameo:
- He's been in other people's videos via Special Guest reactions or in YTPs.
- His Pony OC appears in a few videos.
- Catchphrase:
- "Hey, what's up everybody? BSL, bloodspittinglizard of BSL's Reaction Asylum here, and I'm here to bring you yet another reaction video!"
- Variations of "Don't screencap me." are often said after making a funny face or 'grooving' to a song. It's even at the end of his intros.
- As of his "Mr. Krubby Krabby Avenges Pearl Harbor" reaction, he dropped the phrase due to the amount of screencaps he's gotten. The end of his intros replaces the phrase with "Y'know what? Take all the pictures all you want."
- Often when a song appears and stops playing, he'll exclaim "I was listening to that!"
- Whenever he sees or hears anything from My Little Pony in a non-MLP centered video, he says "Why is My Little Pony In everything?".
- In his 2023 reactions, he refers to it as "The show about the cartoon horses".
- Celebrity Resemblance:
- Especially common in his earlier reactions, the comments would compare him to Ice Cube.
- One comment in his "Arthur YTP Collab" reaction says that he looks like Ice-T.
- Comically Missing the Point: During "Abraham Foulkes Has a Bad Day", BSL in the YTP says "Fuck Abraham Foulkes". The real BSL states that he wouldn't say something like that to him but while sweet, that's not what the video was going for.
- Cool Shades:
- Department of Redundancy Department: His "BSL Reacts to Reactors" series is this as he reacts to other reactors reacting to a video.
- Determinator: He makes it clear that depsite the unannannounced hiatuses, he's not quitting on the channel. Not yet.
- Downer Beginning: Before he was going to react to "Elliot Goes Camping", even though he mentioned it prior, he informs the viewers about the passing of kitty0706 and spends a couple seconds trying to remember what he passed from. He took note of how sad this quickly got.
- Early-Installment Weirdness:
- He didn't have an intro until 2014.
- Before he was known for doing reactions to YTPs, BSL commonly reacted to fan animations or music videos.
- He named the people who requested the videos he reacted to and linked their channels in his description.
- Everyone Has Standards: "2 Kids 1 Sandbox" requested by one of his friends was so disgusting to the point where the video isn't shown at all (It can still be heard though).
- Evil Laughter: The beginning of his "Five Nights At Fosters" reaction has him do this.
- Eye Take: This happens many times in his reactions. Usually with moments like something/someone unexpectedly popping up or ear-rape.
- Facial Scruff: He had a messed up mustache which commenters took note of in his "Hank Hill Shows His True Power" reaction. He ended up fully shaving it off in the next video.
- Failed a Spot Check:
- While reacting to one of the alternative scenes in his "Krusty Krustacean's Kantankerous Kommercial" reaction, an error came up on his end so he had to start the video he was reacting to over.
- While he was pausing the video and pointing out the My Little Pony cameo in his "Mashed Bandicoot 2" reaction, he noticed that he forgot to put the video in OBS so he had to put what he's reacted to so far in the video via editing.
- Genre Shift:
- While it's still a reaction video, instead of just watching a gameplay video, he plays the demo of Freedom Planet.
- Played straight when he uploads a Smash 4 gameplay video.
- The Ghost: He mentions his brother in one reaction but is yet to be seen in one.
- Gosh Darn It to Heck!: While he does swear, sometimes he'll avoid saying it. His favorite word to use is "quappers".note
- Hell Is That Noise: In the pre-intro for his "SMG4: Freddy's Spaghettiria" reaction, he gets startled by the Balloon Boy voices.
- Jump Scare: The beginning of his "How to Make FNAF Not Scary 1 & 2" reaction has the screen black for a few seconds before he does this before it goes to his intro.
- Kubrick Stare: Does this often when saying his Signing Off Catchphrase. One of his reactions have him do this at the beginning.
- Late to the Punchline: Took him until the end of the "Soup or Smash Bros." video to get that it's a Pun on Super Smash Bros..
- Lazy Bum: Admits to this as one of the reasons he doesn't upload videos.
- Live Episode: Since his test live stream back in 2014, the June 2024 Nintendo Direct reaction would be the first actual live stream on the reaction channel.
- Motor Mouth: He says his intro pretty fast in some videos.
- No-Dialogue Episode:
- BSL Has an Announcement has the video be silent for a moment and BSL starts dancing to music a few seconds later until he stops for a screen to pop up announcing his return to the channel.
- Am I Returning Soon? is the same as above but instead, as soon as he nods his head, the last few seconds of his intro music plays.
- Older Than They Look: Several comments on his videos noted that he looks like he was a decade ago despite him being in his mid-30s.
- Overly Long Gag: He uses this intentionally in the description of his April Fools 2015 video to make the viewer stop reading it.
- Pet-Peeve Trope: Sensory Abuse. Especially ear-rape. He even asks why people still do it in YTP videos.
- Rapid-Fire "No!": Whenever freaky, sexual stuff comes up, expect one of these. It's even lampshaded in reaction 113's descriptionDescription: aka BSL reacts by saying NO a lot
- Reaction Video: The main purpose of the channel.
- Rearrange the Song:
- Since his intro was debuted, it gained 8 record scratches at the beginning, some harder drums, and more instruments.
- The 2019 intro was more different as it's a shorter version. It had a high build up and it went to the last few notes of his usual intro that sounds like the one that he introduced in 2014 except it had some background strings with a "YEAH" voice at the end.
- Running Gag:
- The aforementioned "Why is My Little Pony in everything" phrase.
- Whenever he says "ANOTHER REACTION VIDEO!" he puts his arms above his head and spreads them out.
- After his "Crustacean Resurrection Redemption" reaction, sometimes he'll do the dance he did in the pre-intro of that reaction in other reactions from that point on.
- His long, unexpected hiatuses. He even says that he's well known for them.
- Say My Name: When watching Awful Fawful's YTPs, BSL's prone to yelling their name whenever their trademark Nightmare Fuel comes about.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here:
- In his "Krusty Krustacean's Kantankerous Kommercial" reaction, he gives up on a reaction for the first time. The section he gives up on is a bonus scene where SpongeBob is seen walking while "I'm So Fresh" by Soulja Boy Tell 'Em plays in the background.
- During his "Mashed Bandicoot 2" reaction, after the N.Brio Sez segment, BSL follows suit and takes off his headphones to leave the reaction which only lasts a few seconds until he come back to it.
- Seen It All: He says in his newer videos that nothing surprises him when watching YouTube Poop videos.
- Self-Deprecation:
- Subverted. The beginning of his "Sonic Adventure 2 (Dark & Final Story) Real-time Fandub" reaction has him "give" out the award for worst lighting and is about to point at himself. He stops and says:BSL: Probably not me, I'm sure there's worse lighting than this on YouTube when it comes to reaction videos.
- Played straight when he makes remarks about his habit of having long hiatuses.
- Subverted. The beginning of his "Sonic Adventure 2 (Dark & Final Story) Real-time Fandub" reaction has him "give" out the award for worst lighting and is about to point at himself. He stops and says:
- Sensory Abuse: He inevitably goes through this, especially ear-rape, when reacting to videos. Especially YouTube Poop. He tries to do this at the end of his "Elsa Let's Her Sanity Go" reaction with a warning beforehand.
- Shout-Out: Of course, being a Let's Player and all, he'll make references to other media when watching videos.
- Signing Off Catchphrase: "'Till next time, everybody, BSL/bloodspittinglizard out."
- Special Guest: Through his earlier videos to 2015, BSL had another person(s) occasionally react with him whether they were a reactor or not.
- Status Quo Is God:
- In his "Hank Hill's Final Stand" reaction he tries a new layout which everyone in the comment section hates. The old format is brought back for good in the next video.
- In 2019, BSL had a new intro which had the text "BSL Reacts" in a hellish background along with a new remix of his intro. Due to him getting a new computer (and probably lost the new intro in the process), it's back to his previous intro.
- The Stinger: The last few seconds of the April 1st 2015 video has BSL announce that the real reaction to the YTP will come soon.
- The Stoic: The calm, Deadpan Snarker type. He even says that a Try Not To Laugh video wouldn't be hard due to his poker faces.
- Think of the Censors!: Throughout his "Sponge Binge: The Sex Joke Horizon" reaction, he occasionally states how scared he is to upload the reaction because of all the sexual content in the video.BSL: Do I have to start censoring things!?
- This Is Gonna Suck:
- "2 Kids 1 Sandbox" has him afraid to see the video due to the ads on the site he was on.
- Any video where he's afraid of just the title of it is this. He's usually right.
- Title Montage: All of his intros with the exception of his 2019 intro.
- Trademark Favorite Food: Sushi. He states that he likes it while eating it during the beginning of his "Robotnik Fails a Math Test" reaction.
- Variations on a Theme Song: The intro in his reaction to "Abraham Foulkes Has a Bad Day and it's sequel" is instead replaced with the creator of the two videos, TheZorotlThing, rapping to the intro music instead.
- Verbal Tic:
- "Essentially" is essentially his favorite word when he's explaining something.
- He makes a little grunt/chuckle noise sometimes after he finishes his sentences.
- Vocal Evolution: Throughout the years, with the help of the microphones he uses, his voice gets deeper and deeper.
