Super Mario 64 Bloopers are a genre of machinima comedies filmed in Super Mario 64.

One of the first, if not the first machinima of this kind was the eponymous series created by YouTube user Megaman765 in 2006. The series consisted primarily of gameplay footage recorded in an emulator and edited with subtitles and/or voices added to it via Windows Movie Maker. Gameshark codes and other hacks were used to create various effects such as changing the colors of Mario's clothes, creating clones of Mario, and freezing the camera in place. Around this time, users such as: Fleskhjerta, starman3, MaxofS2D, MATTHEWGU4, ACDCGAMER and MarioMario54321 also started creating this style of machinima, helping the genre become more widespread and grow in popularity by 2010.

MATTHEWGU4 and ACDCGAMER went on to create the first non-comedic SM64 machinima videos (such as the Mario/Metroid trilogy), fathering the "SM64 drama" subset. Other users: WhiteTongue, VideoGameGuy101 and MarioMario761 would emerge making similar machinima. "Super Mario 64 bloopers" would refer specifically to the comedic variety of SM64 machinima and, erroneously, all SM64 machinima. This reflects the significance of Megaman765 as a sort of founding father for the modern genre. It also reflects the insane amount of SM64 machinima authors who give their series the exact same title.

Early SM64 machinima was rather simplistic and primitive. They didn't always have the best of scripts (if any) and the recording and editing was of poor quality. By around 2008-2009, SM64 machinima and its associated community had evolved far beyond their simple roots and become a niche of its own. Along with the audience, the quality of Mario bloopers have also evolved dramatically.

Some of the most notable names in SM64 machinima include:

  • ACDCGAMER (2007)
  • Armonzii (2010): Formerly Nintendofan997/Xboxfan997.
  • EnvoyoftheSword (2006): Creator of Wrath of the Ice God. Formerly known as nikkonolasco before the namesake channel was hacked in 2009 and subsequently terminated, taking the original iteration of the series with it.
  • FightingMario54321 (2011)
  • Fleskhjerta (2006)
  • Geofcraze634 (2014)
  • GM64 (2013)
  • Gooosetav (2011): Formerly MarioMario761.
  • Hammycheez (2012)
  • Jokester94n (2008)
  • MarioMario54321 (2007)
  • MATTHEWGU4 (2007)
  • Maxime Lebled (2007): Formerly known as MaxofS2D, he used Risio's Retro Texture Pack to give a cartoon-like aspect to his bloopers. While he deleted all of these when he professionalized in Machinimas and 3D animationnote  because he considers them as an Old Shamenote , the first two episodes (out of nine) of his first and most known bloopers Luigi's Journey can be found on this YouTube channel, while other channels host two episodes of The Mushroom Kingdom Chronicles (not to be confused with MATTHEWGU4 series), "Breaking the Fifth Wall" and "The Day the Retards Moved in", and another holds "Super Mario 64 in 30 Seconds".
  • Megaman765 (2006): His Legend of the Seven Shadow Stars Remix can be found on this YouTube channel.
  • MJacobBarker (2011): His videos are high-definition shorts with a few writter dialogue (or no dialogue at all) which can be either comical, scary or tragic.
  • OnyxKing (2014)
  • ShadowMario64 (2006): The original Super Mario 64 Machinimist, predating the bloopers genre itself and inspiring Megaman765 to make the first blooper series.
  • starman3 (2007): Notable for founding the YouTube Rangers, an early group consisting of multiple Super Mario 64 Machinimists. Unfortunately, it was eventually discovered that he was a predator, abusing his power and position for his own benefit. He has since been blacklisted from the Mario 64 machinima community and hasn't uploaded anything in years.
  • SuperMario9080 (2008)
  • SMG4 (2011): Went on to become arguably the most recognizable icon from the genre, going from independently-made videos in 2011 to a full-on production company with a professional crew and cast by 2019. His eponymous series would eventually de-emphasize the SM64 game engine and assets in-favor of using Garry's Mod, though the models from Super Mario 64 still regularly appear and some scenes in THE 5,000,000 SUB SPECIAL were done in Super Mario 64.
  • VideoGameGuy101 (2007)
  • Weegeepie (2017)
  • WhiteTongue (2007)

Some common tropes in SM64 machinima include:

  • Action Girl: Just about anybody besides Princess Peach, and even then that's just because she isn't commonly depicted.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: A somewhat common villain trope, particularly with King Whomp, Bowser and even some heroes such as Luigi.
  • Author Avatar: The countless dozens of YouTubers that appear in these videos as Palette Swaps of Mario.
  • Art Shift: Happens any time footage from another game is used. Also whenever a 2D sprite or non 64 Bit 3D model is superimposed on the 3D environment of SM64.
  • Bigger on the Inside: The igloo in Snowman's Land and the Rainbow Starship in MarioMario54321's series are some notable examples.
  • Cerebus Syndrome: The "SM64 drama" videos compared to the bloopers.
  • Crossover: Some machinimists tend to crossover concepts from non-Mario franchises into their videos.
  • Crossover Cameo: Many machinists made apparitions as themselves (sort-of) in others' videos. MaxofS2D's The Mushroom Kingdom Chronicles (not to be confused with MATTHEWGU4's series) featured a lot of these (who were introduced like Super Smash Bros. Brawl characters), as major or minor roles depending on the episode.
  • Energy Ball: Done in the style of Ki Attacks or Fire Balls.
  • Energy Weapon: Some characters and YouTubers use lightsabers or plasma guns as their weapons of choice.
  • Evil Doppelgänger / Evil Twin: MarioMario54321's videos feature Oiram, an evil twin of Mario who is the opposite of him in every way, as well as a whole army of other such doppelgangers of various people. Many other video makers have copied this idea, SMG3 to SMG4 being a notable example.
  • Fartillery: Wario, obviously.
  • Gratuitous Foreign Language: MaxofS2D included a text in French (as he is French himself) in Luigi's Journey, and in "The Day the Retards Moved In", he could be seen speaking a few words in French with his translator Sinyps.
  • Idiot Hero: Some machinimists have copied SMG4's take on Mario being a dumbass. Whenever the Mario of their bloopers isn't a dumbass, the role usually ends up being given to a clone of Mario due to Clone Degeneration.
  • Palette Swap: The numerous YouTube Author Avatars are mostly recolors of Mario, even if they're female. Even Mario's own brother Luigi, despite there existing a hack to insert a custom Luigi player model into the game in place of Mario, usually is depicted as one (although this has been changing in later years). Also, bystanders are often Mario recolors, especially in the earlier videos.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: Most notably, Mario's (in)famous "WWAAAAAAAAOOOOOHHHHHH!" as he falls to his death.
  • Shout-Out: Common, sometimes utilized as a form of unofficial Canon Welding.
