One of the first, if not ''the'' first machinima of this kind was the eponymous series created by Website/{{YouTube}} user [=Megaman765=] in 2006. The series consisted primarily of gameplay footage recorded in an emulator and edited with subtitles and/or voices added to it via Windows Movie Maker. Gameshark codes and other hacks were used to create various effects such as changing the colors of Mario's clothes, creating clones of Mario, and freezing the camera in place. Around this time, users such as: Fleskhjerta, starman3, [=MaxofS2D=], [=MATTHEWGU4=], ACDCGAMER and [=MarioMario54321=] also started creating this style of machinima, helping the genre become more widespread and grow in popularity by 2010.

''Super Mario 64 Bloopers'' are a genre of {{machinima}} comedies [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin filmed in]] ''VideoGame/SuperMario64''.

[=MATTHEWGU4=] and ACDCGAMER went on to create the first non-comedic [=SM64=] machinima videos (such as the ''Mario/Metroid'' trilogy), fathering the "[=SM64=] drama" subset. Other users: [=WhiteTongue=], [=VideoGameGuy101=] and [=MarioMario761=] would emerge making similar machinima. "Super Mario 64 bloopers" would refer specifically to the comedic variety of [=SM64=] machinima and, erroneously, all [=SM64=] machinima. This reflects the significance of [=Megaman765=] as a sort of founding father for the modern genre. It also reflects the insane amount of [=SM64=] machinima authors [[FollowTheLeader who give their series the exact same title.]]

Early [=SM64=] machinima was rather simplistic and primitive. They didn't always have the best of scripts (if any) and the recording and editing was of poor quality. By around 2008-2009, [=SM64=] machinima and its associated community had evolved far beyond their simple roots and become a niche of its own. Along with the audience, [[ArtEvolution the quality of Mario bloopers have also evolved dramatically]].

!!Some common tropes in [=SM64=] machinima include:

* ActionGirl: Just about anybody besides [[DamselInDistress Princess Peach]], and even then that's just because she isn't commonly depicted.
* AttackOfThe50FootWhatever: A somewhat common villain trope, particularly with King Whomp, Bowser and even some heroes such as [[VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiDreamTeam Luigi]].
* AuthorAvatar: The countless dozens of [=YouTubers=] that appear in these videos as {{Palette Swap}}s of Mario. [=MaxofS2D=]'s ''The Mushroom Kingdom Chronicles'' featured '''a lot''' of these (who were introduced like ''VideoGame/SuperSmashBrosBrawl'' characters), as major or minor roles depending on the episode.
* ArtShift: Happens any time footage from another game is used. Also whenever a 2D sprite or non 64 Bit 3D model is superimposed on the 3D environment of [=SM64=].
* BiggerOnTheInside: The igloo in Snowman's Land and the Rainbow Starship in [=MarioMario54321=]'s series are some notable examples.
* CerebusSyndrome: The "[=SM64=] drama" videos compared to the bloopers.
* {{Crossover}}: Some machinimists tend to crossover concepts from non-Mario franchises into their videos.
* EnergyBall: Done in the style of [[Manga/DragonBall Ki Attacks]] or FireBalls.
* EnergyWeapon: Some characters and [[AuthorAvatar YouTubers]] use [[Franchise/StarWars lightsabers]] or plasma guns as their weapons of choice.
* EvilDoppelganger / EvilTwin: [=MarioMario54321=]'s videos feature Oiram, an evil twin of Mario who is the opposite of him in every way, as well as a whole army of other such doppelgangers of various people. [[FollowTheLeader Many other video makers have copied this idea]], [=SMG3=] to [=SMG4=] being a notable example.
* {{Fartillery}}: Wario, obviously.
* GratuitousForeignLanguage: [=MaxofS2D=] included a [[GratuitousFrench text in French]] (as he is French himself) and in "The Day the Retards Moved In", he could be seen speaking a few words in French with his translator Sinyps (who translated his machinimas in English and gave him music for his videos at the time).
* IdiotHero: Some machinimists have copied [=SMG4's=] take on Mario being a dumbass. Whenever the Mario of their bloopers isn't a dumbass, the role usually ends up being given to a clone of Mario due to CloneDegeneration.
* PaletteSwap: The numerous [=YouTube=] {{Author Avatar}}s are mostly recolors of Mario, even if they're [[GirlsWithMustaches female]]. Even Mario's own brother Luigi, despite there existing a hack to insert a custom Luigi player model into the game in place of Mario, usually is depicted as one (although this has been changing in later years). Also, bystanders are often Mario recolors, especially in the earlier videos.
* ScreamsLikeALittleGirl: Most notably, Mario's (in)famous "WWAAAAAAAAOOOOOHHHHHH!" as he falls to his death.
* ShoutOut: Common, sometimes utilized as a form of unofficial CanonWelding.
