As of the end of Season Three, major changes happen to the cast that affect the entire continuity of the show; spoilers will be unmarked. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

The McCalls

    Melissa McCall

Melissa McCall (portrayed by Melissa Ponzio)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/melissa-22_7049.jpg

"There’s a team of lawyers in the back who would break my legs. And I don’t know if you’ve seen my legs. But for a girl my age, they’re still pretty hot."

Scott's snarky but well-meaning single mother, who is a registered nurse at the Beacon Hills Memorial hospital. She has no idea of her son's double life in the first two seasons, but gets heavily involved in his dealings with the supernatural once she does.

  • Action Mom: While she largely stays out of the fray, she's certainly not phased by the Alphas, as evidenced by her taking defibrillators to the Merged!Twins when they attacked her son. Generally, if Scott's in trouble, stay out of her way.
  • Deadpan Snarker: She’s probably the snarkiest person on the show. One shining example is when Scott and Isaac fall asleep watching over her, she smiles and flatly responds to it:
    Melissa: ...my heroes.
  • Good Parents: Not just to Scott, but to Stiles and Isaac too.
  • Hands-Off Parenting
Melissa: Don't either of you care that there's a police-enforced curfew?
    Scott and Stiles: ...no.
Melissa: *Walks Away*. All right, that's enough parenting for tonight.
  • Mama Bear:
    • She does not react kindly to Mr. Argent's implication that her son is dragging down his daughter.
    • It’s also a very poor idea to screw with Stiles or Isaac around her.
  • The Medic: As a nurse, she's usually the character who is approached when people are injured. After she finds out about the supernatural, she commonly gets called to those cases Deaton can't patch up in his vet clinic.
  • Parental Substitute: Early on, she's not all that pleased Stiles basically made her house his second home, but she grows softer towards him over the course of the series. When he sleepily tells her Thanks, Mom. in Season 3B, it sure chokes her up. She also becomes somewhat of a substitute mother to Isaac while he stays with the McCalls.
  • Team Mom: To the point where she locks Stiles and Malia in a room together so they can sort out a fight in Season 4.
  • Villain Over for Dinner: In Season 1, she gets asked out on a date by Peter, the Alpha, much to Scott's horror.
  • Weirdness Censor: Averted; she eventually finds out about the supernatural side of Beacon Hills and is more than willing to help her son and his friends out with whatever they need to combat the threats that emerge due to that side.

    Rafael McCall

Rafael McCall (portrayed by Matthewdel Negro)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/9e5b0622fe73b91ba744894dcc0f7f81.jpg

"You and your friends, the way you guys handle things? It doesn't seem to faze you like it should. It's like you guys know something I don't."

Melissa's ex-husband and Scott's father, who walked out on them when Scott was very young. He's working for the FBI.

  • The Alcoholic: Apparently had a bad drinking problem while he was married to Melissa.
  • The Atoner: Genuinely wants to make good on his former mistakes, and tries to be around for Scott and Melissa.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Rescues Stiles from a serial killer about to shoot him at the last second.
  • Disappeared Dad: Walked out on his wife and son. He returns in Season 3.
  • In-Series Nickname: His wife calls him "Rafe."
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Invoked in Season 3; played with in Season 4, when he notices that his son and his friends are far too calm for the horrible things that keep happening to them, and mentions to Scott that he wants a talk upon returning from his trip to San Francisco.
  • Weirdness Censor: He gets attacked by Oni twice and still seems to think there is a normal explanation to it all. He catches on eventually.
  • Written-In Absence: As his actor was filming something else, Agent McCall had to return to the FBI offices in San Francisco to explain why he used his gun with deadly force, and didn't come back for the rest of Season 4.

The Stilinskis

    Sheriff Stilinski

Sheriff Stilinski (portrayed by Linden Ashby)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_m6avr2eyYS1r12xmf_6470.jpg

"I'm carrying a lethal weapon. If I want the curly fries, I will have the curly fries."

Stiles's father, a widower and the Sheriff of Beacon Hills. Well-meaning and overworked, he initially has no clue of the actual, darker levels going on within his town, despite his son fighting against them on a nightly basis. Once he is made aware of the supernatural, he's less than thrilled, but uses his newfound knowledge to solve cases old and new more effectively.

  • Adorkable: His reaction to Stiles actually getting to play lacrosse is adorable. It obviously runs in the family.
Sheriff Stilinski: Oh no. Why is my son running out to the field?
Melissa: Because he's on the team?
Sheriff Stilinski: He's on the team. He's...he's on the field. MY SON IS ON THE FIELD!!!
    Stiles: Oh, dear God.
  • A Father to His Men: Really doesn't like it when you try to kill his deputies.
  • Badass Normal: One of the few characters without any powers, he has to fall back on his wits and his gun - which usually is more than enough.
  • Benevolent Boss: Is very popular with his subordinates, to the point where Agent McCall is openly antagonized when leading an investigation against him.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • In Season 3, he saves Dr. Deaton from hanging when Scott is unable to due to a Mountain Ash barrier.
    • In the Season 4 finale, he saves Lydia and Mason by blowing up the Berserker who threatened them.
  • Da Chief: Highest ranked officer of the law in Beacon Hills.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He can hold his own against his son most of the time.
  • Good Parents: He's a very good father and does the best that he can for his son.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: While Scott wants to tell him about the supernatural world, Stiles is very adamant about keeping it secret, fearing that his father might get hurt if he knows too much. Naturally, this doesn't work out for long, and the Sheriff gets introduced to Beacon Hills weirder side at the end of Season 3A.
  • Mentor: He comes to rely on Parrish a lot and seems to be training him as a possible successor.
  • Only Sane Man: It's pretty obvious that he feels like this around Scott and Stiles a lot of the time.
  • Papa Wolf:
    • He reacts very badly when someone kidnaps and beats up his son. He probably would've gone after the Argents himself if Stiles had told him the truth.
    • It’s likely that harming Scott would set off a Berserk Button, too.
  • Parental Substitute: To Scott and later to Malia.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: He is the sheriff.
  • Team Dad: Once he figures out about the weird things in Beacon Hills, he joins with Chris in this regard.
  • 10-Minute Retirement: Fired when his son's unexplained night-time activities pile up a bit too high. Re-hired after Matt's murder.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Curly fries.

    Claudia Stilinski

Claudia Stilinski

The Sheriff's wife and mother to Stiles, she died of a mysterious, debilitating sickness when Stiles was nine. Nonetheless, she remains a constant presence in their lives.

  • Death by Origin Story: Neither Stiles nor his father would be the men they are if Claudia were still alive. Their relationship is notably affected by her demise, leading to both being very protective of the other, deeply afraid of experiencing another such devastating loss.
  • The Lost Lenore: The Sheriff still wears his wedding ring, and despite evident chemistry with Melissa, doesn't seem willing to move on from his wife's death to seek out new romance.
  • Posthumous Character: Died while Stiles was just a child.

The Argents

    Chris Argent

Chris Argent (portrayed by JR Bourne & Max Lloyd Jones)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chris-22_8724.jpg

"Our sons are trained to be soldiers... our daughters to be leaders."

Formerly the chief enforcer of the Argent family, Chris Argent became a protector of innocent humans and supernaturals, after his daughter Allison, then the de facto leader of the Argent family, decided to change the Argent motto, turning them from hunters into guardians. Even after her death, he remains a steady ally to Scott and his friends.

  • Anti-Villain: Especially in Season 2, where he functions as the Token Good Team Mate of the Argent family.
  • Anti-Hero: he turns into this in Season 3, after his father's mindgames leave him disillusioned in the hunters' cause.
  • Arms Dealer: He sells firearms and munitions to law enforcement agencies to conveniently explain why he has so many of them.
  • Badass Normal: He has to rely on knowledge, skills and weaponry against often supernatural foes, but when it comes time to kick ass, he really kicks ass.
  • Being Evil Sucks: Granted, he does not see himself as evil but the whole hunter thing virtually destroys his family.
  • Code of Honor: Pretty much the only Argent who actually follows it.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: In Seasons 1 and 2, toward his father and sister's attitude regarding wolves. It eventually reaches it's peak when he and Scott team up to stop Gerard.
  • Good Parents: He only wants the best for his daughter, even if that means protecting her from her own grandfather, or from dating werewolves.
  • Hunter of Monsters: One member of a long line of people who have sworn to protect humans from werewolves, going back to the Beast of Gevaudan.
  • Impaled with Extreme Prejudice/Pinned to the Wall: This happens to him in Season 4 courtesy of Peter, whom he tracked down in the sewers (and yes, all the Usual Implications are in full effect, especially since Peter leans his forehead against Argent's at the, erm, climax.). Fortunately, he gets saved by Parrish, who was also tracking Peter.
  • Knight Templar: In Seasons 1 and 2, Chris genuinely sees his profession as essential to the protection of human beings. He changes his mind after witnessing the destruction his father and sister cause, ultimately culminating in the deaths of his wife and daughter.
  • Knight Templar Parent: After finding out Scott is a werewolf, he holds him at gunpoint to make Allison promise she won't see him again. He hasn't followed through with his death threats is because he's gotten help from Scott before - well that and Allison would be devastated. His wife, not so much.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Starts feeling this in Season 2, after he helps his wife kill herself and his daughter begins to show signs of becoming a psychopath like his father and sister.
  • Never Hurt an Innocent: Essentially what his Code of Honor is, and yes, for him this also includes werewolves. As long as the werewolf isn't proven to be dangerous he will not hunt them down.
  • Not So Stoic: Sheds tears at his wife's and daughter's deaths.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: After Allison's death at the end of Season 3.
  • Papa Wolf: Seriously, stay away from his daughter. Especially romantically; he will shoot you.
  • Retired Badass: He gives up on the hunting business between seasons 2 and 3, due to the strain on his family.
  • The Stoic: Being a Hunter pretty much requires you to be stoic and pragmatic. Even when off the job in Season 3 he still manages to take most of the drastic twists in stride. In "The Divine Move" he says he's always had an ability to suppress his emotions.
  • Team Dad: Alongside Sheriff Stilinski, they're both sensible authority figures who look after the teenage protagonists (and sometimes fight alongside them).
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: In Seasons 1 and 2, with Scott. Less and less as the series goes on. In Season 4, his deal with the Calaveras has hints of this.
  • Trauma Conga Line: Loses his sister Kate in season 1, has to watch his wife commit suicide and realizes his father is a genocidal monster in Season 2, loses his daughter in Season 3, and finds out his sister isn't dead but has turned into a murderous were jaguar in Season 4. No wonder he's giving up on life.
  • Unwitting Pawn: In Season 2, Gerard plays him like a fiddle despite Chris's misgivings about his father's apparent genocidal attitude towards werewolves. But the kicker is that it is only after Chris helps his wife commit suicide because she has been bitten by a werewolf and will soon become one, something Gerard insisted that he do, that Chris learns that Gerard has been planning to become a werewolf himself in order to survive terminal cancer.

    Victoria Argent

Victoria Argent (portrayed by Eaddy Mays)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tumblr_m6mhc9wBZq1qkudux_421.jpg

"So long as you stay strong, we won't have to kill a sixteen-year-old boy."

The matriarch of the Argent family, Chris' wife and Allison's mother. Despite her ice-cold demeanor and harsh personality, she loves her husband and daughter and feels very protective of Allison especially.

  • The Baroness: While she may not be a hunter herself, as the matriarch of the family, she is their official leader.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: She implies to Scott that she'll have him castrated (see Freudian Threat) if she founds out that he and Allison are sleeping together. When she actually catches them kissing, she sets out to kill him.
  • Driven to Suicide: After being bitten by Derek, she impales herself with a knife right as she begins transforming into a wolf on a full moon.
  • The Dragon: Even though she was the overall leader of the hunters, she answers to Gerard.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: She loves Chris, and is fiercely protective of Allison. All of her actions, as misguided as they are, can be seen as her attempts to keep Allison from harm.
  • Evil Matriarch: Tries to murder Scott and make it look like an accident for having sex with her daughter.
  • Freudian Threat: Asks Scott if he's sleeping with her daughter while sharping a fresh pencil to a stump.
  • Fur and Loathing: Frequently seen in a fur coat when out in public. Given her family's proclivities, the symbolism is kind of creepy if you think about it for too long.
  • Karmic Transformation: Gets bitten by Derek in self-defense, and is in the process of turning into what she hates the most.
  • Knight Templar Parent: More so than Chris. When she learns Scott is still seeing Allison - and that they're sleeping with each other - she decides to murder Scott.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Right after she attempts (and fails) to kill Scott, she is bitten by Derek.
  • Mama Bear: Have sex with her daughter? Hope you like a slow death by wolfsbane vapor.
  • Power Hair: Victoria has hair shorn even shorter than Hilary Clinton's, very controlled (just like her).
  • Principles Zealot: Actually commits suicide rather than become a werewolf, as this is what hunters are required to do.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Barely hiding, but she switches from offering cookies to ordering murders to complaining about academic standards dropping to torturing people on a dime.

The Yukimuras

    Noshiko Yukimura

Noshiko Yukimura (portrayed by Tamlyn Tomita, Arden Cho [in flashbacks])

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/49f30b43aec9efb5fe7cb21e357b3484.jpg

”I see I'm no longer the Fox now, Kira. You are.”

Noshiko Yukimura is the mother of Kira and is a centuries old Kitsune of legend. Consumed by rage over the loss of her American boyfriend Rhys while detained at a Japanese internment camp during WWII, she channeled the powers of the Dark Kitsune, intending to use its powers to get vengeance. Instead, the dark spirit took over Rhys, giving rise to the Nogitsune.

Noshiko, along with her husband Ken, now serves to mentor Kira on how to hone her newly-awakened Kitsune powers.

  • Action Mom: She's seen her fair share of action, and doesn't hesitate to step right back into it when she feels the situation calls for it.
  • Anti-Villain: During Season 3B. Noshiko is adamant that the Nogitsune, her Arch-Enemy, be eliminated even if it means outright killing its host to prevent total chaos - Stiles!
  • Asian Fox Spirit: She is one, although it is unknown what type.
  • Astral Projection: It's implied she uses this in "Smoke and Mirrors" to contact Kira to comfort her and instruct her how to heal.
  • Brought Down to Normal: After using up all her nine Kitsune Tails during the events of season 3, after she sacrifices eight of them to summon Oni as well as lead them. When she reappears post Season-3, it's confirmed she's lost her healing abilities and strength.
  • Good Parents: She and Ken are this to Kira. The fact that Kira presently has the only set of parents who are aware of and active in the supernatural world takes this up to eleven.
  • Happily Married: To Kira's father, Ken.
  • Interspecies Romance: With Rhys, then with Ken, both humans.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: In 1943, Noshiko was heavily shot during the massacre at Oak Creek, but barely alive. When the bodies were about to be disposed of by fire, she knew she was going to die, so to save herself was partially the reason she summoned the Nogitsune along with her Roaring Rampage of Revenge below.
    • Happened to her again when she went up against the Nogitsune to stop his vengeance and chaos by killing the newly-reanimated corpse used as his host - her great love Rhys.
    • Once again in the present day when the Nogitsune is released and her using her Tails to summon the Oni to slay the Nogitsune.
  • Last of Her Kind: Mentioned to be the last surviving member of her family.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Used on while fighting the Nogitsune. It is unknown if her katana is magical or if she supplies its magic.
  • The Mentor: Noshiko teaches Kira what it means to be a Kitsune, showing her how to utilize her recently awoken powers. Also, during a Team Mom moment with Melissa in Season 4, when Melissa wonders if it's right to let their kids face all these dangers, she mildly observes that the only other way would be having them run for the rest of their lives.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Her realizing her great mistake in WWII in summoning the Nogitsune resulting in chaos, destruction, the deaths of her fellow inmates, leading her to confronting the Dark Spirit and her actions in Season 3B.
  • Passing the Torch: Noshiko is a nigh-immortal, experienced Kitsune who wields a special katana. After sacrificing her tails to summon the Oni necessary to battling the Nogitsune, her powers are used up; she thus hands the sword to her daughter Kira, who has come into her powers just recently. Noshiko from then on serves as Kira's Trickster Mentor.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Although Noshiko currently looks like a fairly normal, if very attractive 40+ mother, she's actually close to 900 years old. It comes with being a fox spirit.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Her initial plan back in World War II was to summon the Nogitsune and wreak havoc on those involved in Rhys's death. It...didn't quite go the way she planned.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Her present day confrontation with the Nogitsune shows that she has lost nothing of her edge.
  • Sticky Fingers: Possibly a part of her trickster nature manifesting itself, while imprisoned at Oak Creek she frequently stole food and supplies for her fellow prisoners. She got away with it in part due to her boyfriend looking the other way.
  • Wrecked Weapon: Her special katana which could neutralize the Nogitsune, gets shattered after she defeats the Nogitsune the first time. Decades later, the main characters put it back together and she passes it to Kira.

    Ken Yukimura

Ken Yukimura (portrayed by Tom T. Choi)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dc8eb8ad18bf17b0b53084e147730961.jpg

"I'm sure by now you all know my daughter, Kira. Or you might not since she's never mentioned anyone from school or brought home a friend for that matter. [...] Either way, there she is."

Kira's father and Beacon Hills High's replacement history teacher (after the Darach's murder of the previous one).

Fully aware of the supernatural world, that Noshiko is a Kitsune and their daughter has inherited her lineage, Ken does his best to support both of them in times of need.

  • Adorkable: As embarrassing as his actions can be, they are endearing in a way as he is oblivious to the anguish he causes for his daughter (see above quote for details). It's clear this is where Kira gets her more goofy aspects from.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Seems to have no problem discussing his daughter's personal life in class...while she's sitting in one of the rows. Likewise, he loudly discusses her crush on Scott with her...in front of Scott.
  • Good Parents: Ken clearly cares for and loves Kira, giving her advice and comfort as she comes to terms with her Kitsune nature.
  • Happily Married: He clearly loves his wife and is very supportive of her.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: With Noshiko, who's around nine hundred years old.
Noshiko [on her age]: Actually, closer to nine hundred.
Kira [shocked]: Dad, how old are you?
    Ken: Forty-three.
  • Older Than They Look: Ken has jokingly remarked that some people say he looks to be in his mid-thirties.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Ken is a teacher at the school who's aware of the supernatural goings on at the school and covers for his daughter and her friends now and then.
  • Real Men Cook: Is the family's cook, something Noshiko is quite proud of. When Scott first visits their home he's treated to a sushi dinner.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: Tends to get into it with his daughter over his daughter's social life.
Ken: You said you wanted to be noticed.
Kira: I could set myself on fire and be noticed.
Ken: And then you'd be dead.
    Kira: Exactly!

The Martins

    Natalie Martin

Natalie Martin (portrayed by Susan Walters)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/35a976d8f790d583c9d2edaad5364442.jpg
"Of course we're going to do your hair."

Lydia's wealthy and supportive, if slightly distant, mother, who has custody of her after the divorce.

  • Good Parents: She genuinely seems to want the best for Lydia, urging her to see the school counsellor when she suffers from nightmares in Season 2, and supporting her when she decides not to hide the bruises she got from the Darach trying to strangle her in Season 3.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: She makes a point to appear like a shallow, flirtatious socialite, but proves to be genuinely intelligent and competent in a crisis, showing Nerves of Steel when a dangerous virus breaks out in school. Her care for Lydia, and most surprisingly, Coach Finstock, further hint that her superficial exterior is largely a facade.
  • Snark-to-Snark Combat: Trading sarcastic remarks seems part of her Mother-Daughter-Bond with Lydia.

    Mr. Martin

Mr. Martin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/af6f645e1a79867120d83e157be8d354.png
"I'm waiting outside, where it is less sarcastic."

Lydia's father, who forced her to choose which parent she wanted to live with after their divorce. Apparently, he had a strained relationship with his mother, Lorraine, due to her "erratic behaviour."

    Lorraine Martin

Lorraine Martin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/5c360b664e5dd1f74500494177156d2f.png

Lydia's paternal grandmother, who was a patient at Eichen House, as well as a banshee like her.

  • Foreseeing My Death: She predicted her own demise, together with that of many other supernatural beings. Most of the others are saved. She's not.
  • Posthumous Character: Died before the start of the series, but proves of great importance to both her granddaughter and the supernatural community of Beacon Hills during Season 4.
  • Psychic Powers: It's unknown how, but she seems to have predicted the events of season 4 and coded a list of people the Benefactor would target.
  • Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: The aforementioned list then fell into the Benefactor's hands, which made it far easier for them to place a bounty on the heads of Beacon Hills's supernaturals.

Other Family Members

    The Dunbars

Dr. Geyer (portrayed by Todd Williams)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/95da4221d454ab1fa14b786cf84988d8.jpg

"Liam, remember what we always said: 'Play smart, not play hard.'"
Dr. Geyer is Liam's stepfather and an administrator at Beacon Hills Memorial hospital.

  • Academic Athlete: When he was in high school, he was captain of his lacrosse team, and he has a medical degree. When Liam was younger, he would play lacrosse with him.
  • Good Parents: He appears close to and supportive of his stepson, and seems dedicated to help him overcome his rage problems.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Liam insists that his parents can't know about him being a werewolf; because of his anger management issues, he's afraid they'll see him as a monster.
  • Remember the New Guy?: He and Melissa know each other well, and seem to have been colleagues for a while.

Mrs. Dunbar

Liam's mother, who is mentioned but has not appeared so far.

  • Locked Out of the Loop: Liam doesn't want her to know he's a werewolf, since he fears she might think of him as a monster.
  • The Unseen: Her husband and son mention her a couple of times.

    Henry Tate

Henry Tate (portrayed by Todd Stashwick)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/82067161d3b8aa8f9bc4896abd5e82da.jpg

Henry Tate is Malia's adoptive father. Ever since his wife Evelyn and two daughters died in a car accident several years ago, he's been devastated with grief, and lives a lonely life on his farm. He seems beyond happy when Malia is miraculously returned to him, but her various secrets keep their relationship strained.

  • Locked Out of the Loop: He's completely unaware that Malia is a werecoyote, and that she presumably killed his wife and younger daughter during her first surprising transformation at age 9. Malia suffers greatly from this.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Initially with both Malia and his younger daughter. Averted with Malia when she's returned to him.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Doesn't appear after Malia is found, and isn't mentioned at all in Season 4.
