Puppet Show

Airdates: January 21, 2015 note , March 16, 2015 note , May 10, 2015 note

Olive and Otto have to crack a case in which a group of people have been turned into puppets, including themselves.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – Animal Care: Whoops, Ms. O's dog, likes fruit juice. While most fruit juices are non-toxic to dogs, and most can safely eat and digest fruits like apple slices, vets don't recommend that they drink fruit juice. In addition, grapes in general — whether as a whole fruit or as juice — are toxic to dogs.
  • Body Horror: Olive and Otto still have puppet hands at the end of the episode despite being turned back to humans. While their arms aren't shown, it leaves one to question whether they also have rod arms.
  • Broken Record: When Olive, Otto and the other puppets are getting ready to leave, they encounter a girl who only repeats two words: "Puppet show!" (Well, and she says "nope" when Olive asks the obvious question.)
  • Butt-Monkey: Olive, Otto and Jimmy are consistently belittled by their co-workers due to them being puppets. Jenny, Anne, and the cab driver are exceptions.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Oscar is showing Ms. O pet options, he shows her a lion. Then this exchange ensues:
Ms. O: Oh! A lion! I can dress it up like a zebra!
Oscar: Couldn't you just get a zebra?
  • Continuity Nod: Ms. O is shown a bear as an option for a possible pet, which she says is "too weak" — referencing her battle with one in "Oscar and the Oscarbots".
  • Evil Puppeteer: The Puppet Master is this, having turned Olive, Otto, and a few other people into puppets.
  • First Pet Story: While Olive and Otto are out finding the other puppets, Ms. O decides to adopt a pet, and a good portion of the episode is dedicated to her finding one. After shooting down ideas for various exotic pets, she finally settles on an Australian Shepherd/border collie mix note  named Whoops, who promptly steals the Puppet Master's gadget. Otto is able to fling himself at Whoops to get him to let go of the gadget, and Ms. O lures him away with some juice. Once the gadget is retrieved, the puppets are turned back into humans, including Olive and Otto. However, Whoops becomes an Absent Animal Companion.
  • Hates Being Called Cute: Both Olive and Otto despise being called cute while as puppets.
  • I Call It "Vera": Jimmy calls his hammer "Big Thunder".
  • Implausible Deniability: While interrogating her, Ms. O holds up the Puppet Master's gadget, explaining that it looks like a dog bone. The Puppet Master retorts that it does not look like a dog bone. The Main 3 bluntly tell her that yes, it does. It becomes a Brick Joke when the Puppet Master sees Whoops, Ms. O's new dog, with the gadget in its mouth.
  • Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique: Downplayed. Ms. O attempts to get the Puppet Master to spill the truth about how to turn the puppets back by using psychological tricks — she'll close her eyes in three seconds, and when she reaches three, she'll sic Olive and Otto on the villainess if she refuses to comply. (It's possible that she meant the threat with the intent to harm or kill, albeit it's subtle since, well, kids' show, and Olive and Otto wouldn't have done much damage anyway in their current forms.) Before Ms. O can reach three, however, the Puppet Master manages to crack from fear.
  • Just Ignore It: This is Otto's advice to Olive after O'Neal begins laughing at them in their puppet states.
  • Lost Food Grievance: Otto makes a remark on Jenny's melted ice cream when he, Olive and the others go to see her.
  • Noodle Implements: Upon Olive finding out that she has puppet hands at the end of the episode, she tells someone to get "glue, lots of glue!"
  • Not So Extinct: Parodied. When Ms. O is describing to Oscar what pet she wants, she explains that said pet doesn't exist — it has fur, four legs, a tail, and it "makes a sound like 'woof woof'". As it turns out, she's describing a dog, which Oscar picks up on.
  • One-Hour Work Week: It's zig-zagged. Jimmy is a construction worker that has been turned into a puppet. His co-workers feel resentful that he gets to leave work early to tag along with Olive and Otto as the three of them attempt to find the other puppets. However, whether Jimmy actually did leave work early or went back to his job is left ambiguous.
  • Pet Monstrosity: A bear and an alpaca are among the pets presented to Ms. O as options for potential adoptees.
  • Puppet Permutation: The premise of the episode.
  • Puppet Shows: The episode features the use of hand puppets for both Olive and Otto, and a few other citizens of the town, who have been turned into puppets.
    • An In-Universe example also occurs when three kids come up to Olive, Otto, Jimmy and Jenny wanting them to put on a show for them and refusing to let them leave until they do.
  • Race Against the Clock: Olive and Otto have until sundown to round up the other puppets and turn them, as well as themselves, back to their normal states.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: When Jimmy is explaining to Olive and Otto how he got turned into a puppet.
Jimmy: So. This villain-looking lady comes over to me, holding something that looks like a dog bone. Anyway, kapow! Next thing you know, I'm a puppet, can you believe it?
    Otto: Uhh, unfortunately, yes.
  • Running Gag: The fact that the Puppet Master's gadget looks like a dog bone does not go unnoticed.
  • Super Cell Reception: Olive uses her badge phone, which is made of felt, to contact Ms. O. However, she can barely hear her agent on the other side of the line, and resorts to just approving whatever Olive is saying (or about to say).
  • Unsuccessful Pet Adoption: Ms. O decides to adopt a pet. However, it becomes an Absent Animal Companion for the remainder of the series.

This isn't your average Mystic Pizza.
Mystic Egg Pizza

Airdates: January 21, 2015 note , March 16, 2015 note , May 10, 2015 note

With the help of Olive and Otto, Delivery Debbie and Delivery Doug must figure out why their food is disappearing.

Tropes:

  • The Alleged Car: Doug drives a station wagon dubbed the Eggmobile that looks fine on the outside. However, the windows don't work, only the front passenger door opens from the inside, and it's safe to say that there's a good reason Olive, Otto and Debbie are crammed in the backseat the first time around.
  • And Your Reward Is Edible: The precinct ends up getting a bunch of free egg salad pizzas by the end of the episode. Ms. O delegates consumption duties to Olive and Otto, much to their chagrin.
  • Artistic License – Cars: Doug's car only has lap belts, with the exception of the driver and passenger seats. While the model and year of his station wagon is unclear, it appears to be straight out of the '90s (and likely before 1996, when the last full-size station wagons were discontinued). Most station wagons — as well as cars in general — have seatbelts that go diagonally across the body and straight across the lap, which no one is seen wearing except for Doug (and later on, Debbie).
  • A Wizard Did It: Quite literally, in this case, as the box seller (who marked his boxes half-off) originally bought a price sticker from a wizard.
  • Basement-Dweller: Doug runs his egg salad sandwich business from his mother's basement — something that's only made obvious when said mother interrupts his and Debbie's argument (much to his chagrin).
  • Blame Game: Debbie blames Doug, who in turn blames Debbie. Olive and Otto both blame Tommy Twosie, who blames Quarter Quinn, who blames...no one, because she has no idea who is responsible for the item thefts.
  • The Bus Came Back: Both Delivery Debbie and Delivery Doug appear in this episode after last being seen in "Double Trouble". What became of the former's doubles, though, is left unknown.
  • Call-Forward: A rather subtle one — Olive gushes over Doug having an Eggmobile, which is a clear reference to the Batmobile. Her favorite comic book hero happens to be Shmumberman, which is a parody of Batman. "Olive and Otto in Shmumberland" has Olive and Otto being trapped in Shmumberman's world and operating the Shmumbermobile.
  • Chase Scene: Averted. Tommy Twosie begins to make a run for it when he's caught, but is unable to go anywhere due to wearing snowshoes.
  • Cheerful Child: Olive immediately latches on to the fact that Delivery Doug has an Eggmobile, and she's completely adorable while doing it.
  • Continuity Nod: This isn't the first time Otto has been called "Oo-too".
    • Olive and Otto repeat their "whaaaaat" Catchphrase after having done it just a couple episodes ago.
    • Remember during The Great Grinaldi, where Otto declares the culprit to be a made-up villain called Fourthsie Fouriet? Well, this episode reveals that a villainess who likes splitting things into quarters and stealing one does actually exist, and she's called Quarter Quinn.
  • Crossing the Burnt Bridge: Both Olive and Debbie expressed their dislike for Doug back in "Double Trouble". In this episode, they go to visit him in order to confront him about the missing slices of pizza, and he ends up being their chauffeur. However, Doug seems to have an It's Personal rivalry with Debbie and doesn't antagonize Olive aside from a Malicious Misnaming moment.
  • Does Not Like Spam: If their reactions are any indication, Olive and Otto hate egg salad — never mind when it's on pizza.
  • Dreadful Musician: Doug. Oh so much.
  • Droste Image: The Cold Open client's trash can is this, as he opens the lid only to find himself greeting Olive and Otto as he did seconds before. When asked what gadget to use, Olive has the idea to watch what the people inside the image do — they use the Trash-inator, which destroys the garbage can, leaving the partner pair to use the Garbage-inator instead. And it only gets more confusing from there.
  • Even Bad Men Love Their Mamas: While Doug isn't necessarily villainous, he still loves his mother, and has even recorded a song with her.
  • Face Palm: Olive does this multiple times (it is her Character Tic).
  • Feud Episode: The episode revolves around Delivery Debbie and Delivery Doug as they argue consistently while working together with Olive and Otto to find out who stole part of their pizzas and egg salad sandwiches. Along the way, they pick up Tommy Twosie and Quarter Quinn, the latter of whom is having a similar issue with her items. When the culprit is found to be the seller of all three adults' delivery boxes and the situation is resolved, Debbie and Doug make up with each other and combine their businesses into one that sells egg salad pizzas.
  • Fictional Currency: This episode introduces the use of Jackalope Dollars as primary currency, albeit the currency itself isn't named until "Dr. O: Party Time, Excellent".
  • Food End: The episode ends with Olive and Otto chowing down on egg salad pizzas, and regretting every minute of it.
Olive: [moans] I'm gonna be sick...
  • Gilligan Cut: Occurs when everyone goes to see Quarter Quinn.
    Doug: To the Eggmobile!
    Tommy Twosie: Cool!
[cut to everyone inside the car]
    Tommy: Not cool.
    • One later occurs when Quarter Quinn enters the vehicle while the group is driving to see Keith.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: Debbie believes that Otto is doing this while confronting Doug, playing the role of the good cop while Olive takes the role of the bad cop. However, she is the only one placing blame on Doug; Otto is trying to ease the tension from Debbie and Doug playing the Blame Game with each other, while Olive isn't pointing fingers at all.
  • Hidden Depths: Otto apparently likes love songs in general, not just ones from Soundcheck — which implies that he might be The Charmer on a similar level as O'Donahue.
  • Hidden Disdain Reveal: Both Debbie and Doug start to do this, with Debbie complaining about how Doug talks too much, before Otto interrupts them.
  • Idiot Ball: Olive and Otto share the ball when eating egg salad pizzas. One would think to take a utensil, open the pizza up, and scrape off as much egg salad as possible — but nope, they don't even think about it.
  • I'm Not Doing That Again: When the group reaches Quarter Quinn's house, it's determined that they need to go driving around once again to find the villain. However, Debbie snaps and refuses to go back into the Eggmobile, which causes the two to delve into an argument.
  • Insistent Terminology: Multiple characters comment on how they thought the Eggmobile was called that because it was shaped like an egg (and all of them stand by that opinion). Instead, it just smells like one. By the time Quarter Quinn comments on it, Doug remarks that "unless you're kicking in gas money, I don't even want to hear it!"
  • Jingle: Debbie and Doug have already come up with a jingle for their combined business by the end of the episode.
  • Malicious Misnaming: Doug mispronounces Olive and Otto's names as "Oo-lave" (pronounced ooh-lah-vay) and "Oo-too", respectively.
Olive: Wow, that's not even close to saying our names right.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: Who's responsible for the thefts? Why, it's none other than the BOX MASTER.
    Debbie: His name's Keith.
  • Not So Above It All: Otto, who is normally a Cloudcuckoolander Nice Guy that rarely has a mean bone in his body (well, aside from villains), has no problem being smug at Doug's expense when his (Doug's) mom interrupts his and Debbie's argument. Even Debbie herself gets in on it!
  • Ode to Food: Quite a few throughout the episode — "All I Really Want is Eggs" (a Piss-Take Rap), an upbeat pop song Doug's mom sings (and has recorded with Doug himself), and a love ballad (which Otto actually enjoys).
  • Open-and-Shut Case: Ms. O believes that the situation is this after hearing Debbie's explanation for why she blames Doug. However, Otto believes they should visit Doug and get answers before pointing any fingers.
  • Piss-Take Rap: Doug's "All I Really Want is Eggs" song, which is about, what else, egg salad sandwiches, is about as poor as you'd expect. Unfortunately, numerous characters have to suffer through it.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The episode's title is based off of the 1988 film Mystic Pizza, as well as the shop from which the film was inspired.
  • Pun: Doug says "I egg your pardon" at one point when Debbie refuses to go back into the Eggmobile.
  • Shout-Out: The Eggmobile is a pretty clear rip of the Batmobile. However, unlike the Batmobile, it's The Alleged Car.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Doug fits this to an absolute T. He believes that his egg salad sandwich business is a "successful empire", and Debbie is quick to accuse him of jealousy for her own, much more successful business at selling pizzas. Even Olive and Otto grow tired of being around him over the course of the episode, especially during the car scenes.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Quarter Quinn is confronted while packing up moving boxes in her van, explaining that she's trying to move out of town really fast without telling anyone.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: Debbie and Doug are forced to work together, as they both have the same problem. It can apply to Olive and Otto as well, albeit they don't consider Doug an enemy as much as they consider him just really annoying.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Olive remarks how it's nice to see Debbie and Doug getting along, while Otto offers a suggestion for them to work together. The two adults end up taking the agents' words to mean joining businesses to make egg salad pizzas, and unfortunately for Otto and Olive, they end up paying the price dearly when they are given stacks upon stacks of egg salad pizzas to eat.
  • Vomit Discretion Shot: Implied, as Olive remarks that she's going to throw up at the end of the episode, but it cuts to black before she actually does.
