Fanfic / Galactic Shift Extend

Go To

Instead of ending up in the timeline where one of her best friends never existed, Lieutenant Makoto Nanaya ends up in the city of Bellwood, home to the hero known by many as Ben 10.

Galactic Shift Extend is a crossover between BlazBlue and Ben 10 written by Seanzilla1988 alongside GammaTron and Kamen Rider ZER0 in which Makoto Nanaya ends up in Bellwood instead of the timeline where her friend Noel doesn't exist. It eventually expands out to include other series such as Transformers: Animated, My Life as a Teenage Robot, Max Steel (2013), and several others.

Currently stands at 104 chapters, alongside a side story that currently has 29 chapters.

Both are now on Archive of Our Own with the main story here and the Side Story here.

    Galactic Shift Extend
  • 20 Minutes into the Past: The date Makoto arrives in the past, and thus the time the fic is set in, is August 1, 2012, which is when the Ben 10: Omniverse episode, The More Things Change, Part 1 aired. Currently, it's implied that the fic is now in 2014.
  • A-Cup Angst: Noel tends to have this at times, especially since her arrival in Bellwood deaged her by a few years from when she was attending the academy.
  • Accidental Marriage: Thanks to Kevin's scheming, Ben became the fiancé of a Tetramand warrior princess named Looma.
  • Adapted Out: Several characters don't appear in the re-tellings of the episodes. For instance, Collectimus does not appear in "Collect This" and Argit does not appear in "Rojo Pursuit" due to apparently having gone into hiding after "Cough It Up".
  • Adaptation Expansion: The Alien X-Tinction story from Ben 10 (2016) goes from one episode to a seven-chapter story arc involving multiple versions of Ben such as the aforementioned Reboot one and Canon Foreigners such as a Cowboy Ben called "Badluck" Ben, a Pirate Ben and a knight version of Ben.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • The Forever Knights under the leadership of the Forever Knight manage to stalemate Ben and co, a far cry from The Remnant they were in canon.
    • The Ben from Gwen 10 has the Ultimatrix.
  • Adaptational Angst Upgrade: In Ben 10 (2016), the Evil Ben was horrified by what happened to his Gwen and Kevin but has dropped that by the time he is reverted from Alien X. In this version, Chapter 90 makes it abundantly clear that this version of Ben is still affected by what happened to his Gwen and Grandpa Max.
  • Adaptational Deviation: In Ben 10 (2016), the version of Ben that's Alien X is an adult (using Ben 10,000's original design no less). In this fanfic, he's still a ten-year-old kid.
  • Adaptational Name Change: The Ormerowons who were mentioned in the ending of Secret of the Omnitrix are renamed Wrighthers.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Will Harangue is somehow even worse than in canon. Not only did he willing side with the Incurseans during their invasion and month-long occupation, he was planning to use the Amber Ogia concentrate to mind control the human population to boo away the heroes in disgust with the parents telling them they were mistakes and should never have been born, and then have them take their own life so they don't have to suffer those memories again. And when he learns the Forever Knights' true intentions of killing every alien, half-alien, super-powered individuals, and their families (which number in the millions), he was on board, believing it'll be the only way for humanity to accept his xenophobic beliefs.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Once they start dating, Ben starts calling Makoto "Babe".
  • Alas, Poor Villain: Like in Canon, Malware basically shapes up to this, leading to his death. All Malware initially wanted was to be cured.
  • Alternate Universe:
    • As per usual for Fanfiction, this is where the story takes place. It turns out that the time travel is instead the cast of BlazBlue being from an alternate universe and parts of it, primarily people, were "borrowed" by Serena and Bellicus to fix what the Annihilargh had destroyed. They had also taken bits from other universes as well to fix what they couldn't.
    • The Remnant visited by Ben, Makoto, and the others in Chapter 76 is not the canon one due to the presence of the Kamen Rider Saber cast.
    • The Earth visited by Ben, Makoto, and the others in Chapter 79 is not the canon one to the Zenkaigers because of the presence of the cast of Sonic the Hedgehog
    • The Vent Noel, Maximillian, Lambda, and Mai meet in Chapter 89 is an alternate universe Ben Tennyson who came to his world due to a malfunction of the Null Void Projector when he was ten.
  • Alternate Universe Reed Richards Is Awesome: The Ben Tennyson of the Dan Phantom timeline retained possession of the Ultimatrix with its Ultimate forms and apparently fought Dan to a standstill, being the only hero left. Although his battles caused immense collateral damage in the process including the destruction of half of the US, which is why Clockwork didn't bring him in to fight Dan in the present.
  • Amoral Attorney: Chadzmuth, the Galvan Lawyer. He is hated by everyone who isn't a bad guy since he keeps getting them released. Ben and Mai's father hate him, especially since he hands out his business card when threatened. Tsukasa had to deal with him to handle the Celestialsapiens wanting to erase the universe.
  • Apocalypse How: The Annihilargh can cause a Class X-4 like in canon. And actually does as in canon. Undone by Alien X, but unlike canon they actually salvage it by "borrowing" from other universes to fill in the blanks, resulting in the other series being added on and keeping the grape smoothie from tasting weird like canon Ben's taste like.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Several times, this has occurred.
    • Whenever Ben uses Way Big or has Humungousaur grow to his full size.
    • During the invasion of the Incurseans, they utilized several mutated To'kustars to conquer the planet.
    • During the end of the invasion, a battle happens between the mutated To'kustars, Way Big, Omega Supreme, and the Sym-Bionic Titan.
    • The Titan Trypticon is awakened by Blukic and Driba and starts making its way to Detroit upon sensing the Matrix of Leadership within Optimus Prime.
  • Battle Couple: Ben and Makoto after they start dating during the Incursean Occupation
  • Bad Future: Dan Phantom's timeline per usual. There in addition to what was originally shown, Dan destroyed Bellwood, murdering all of Ben's family and friends. The resulting battle between him and that timeline's Ben 10K (who still had the Ultimatrix) destroyed half of the United States.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Chapter 90 has Verdona showing up to help beat Alien X by using a spell called Divine Ruina to negate Alien X's powers
  • Birds of a Feather: Despite some initial friction, Ben and Makoto quickly get along, developing a rapport faster than Ben and Rook. This is thanks to them both enjoying a good fight, a shared sense of humor, and being very competent at their jobs despite their eccentricities. Little wonder the two become an Official Couple.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman; Discussed by Rook, who questions why Ben doesn't train in human form, to which Ben retorts that he took karate lessons with Gwen. However, after an unspecified point she simply told him to 'fight smarter', where he hit a roadblock, and being in college she is unable to help further.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Centre: Rath is one of Ben's most aggressive and loud aliens, yet is surprisingly good with children. Rook even mentions that this is a trait common Apploplexians as a whole, being very gentle towards children.
  • Canon Foreigner: Multiple examples such as new aliens for Ben such as aliens taken from the DNA of the The Four Champions of Hyrule and a Triceraton and multiple versions of Ben in the Alien X-Tinction arc such as a Pirate Ben and a Private Detective Ben.
  • Canon Immigrant:
    • Elements of the reboot continuity show up, including aliens like Overflow and villains like Steam Smythe.
    • Although the setting uses Transformers: Animated, it incorporates elements from both the IDW G1 comics (Overlord being very much his IDW self, references to the mythical Titans, the Decepticon Justice Division) and the Aligned continuity (Solus Prime being the source of female Cybertronians, Vector Prime having his normal name).
  • Chick Magnet: Rath is this to the Kaka clan, owing to his feline nature, muscular build and Ben healing the genetic flaw that limits their population to 100.
  • Colossus Climb: A bit of an internal climb for the Omni Team when they have to offline a revived Trypticon making its way to Detroit.
  • Composite Character:
    • Ben's Grimlock form is primarily based on Animated Grimlock but incorporates elements from the Fall of Cybertron version as well.
    • Silverbolt starts out as the Animated version of the G1 Autobot but is reformatted into the Wolf-eagle form of his Beast Wars counterpart.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: The 'fight' between the Omni-Team and the Vengers is hilariously one-sided, with Ben saying any one of his team could defeat them by themselves.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Pretty much everyone.
Makoto: Sheesh. What can you not turn into?
Ben: The alien I want most of the time.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Him: Khyber murdered Ultimate Humongousaur and took his helmet as a trophy. Ben does not take it well. Grimlock apparently suffered the same fate.
    • The Rooters get Vilgax dropped on them and are wiped out.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Dr. Animo may be a Mad Scientist who wants to experiment on Makoto's unique biology, but he is disgusted whenever she thinks he meant another use for her body.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Chadzmuth is an Amoral Attorney who exploits every loophole he can to constantly get criminals out of their cells, but he refuses to help Psyphon after the latter is caught for holding Noel hostage, citing this very trope.
  • Evil Is Petty: The entire reason that Eon came back in time was to ruin Ben and Makoto's half-year anniversary date.
  • Expy: Tsubaki ends up training some plumber recruits based on Po and the Furious Five.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water:
    • Makoto and several of the other BlazBlue characters are confused upon seeing things like cars for the first time.
    • Jenny (having been made in the 1920s in this version) has trouble adapting to the 21st century, using outdated slang and missing many references.
  • Fix Fic: The writers note their intention to fix some of the more controversial elements of Ben 10: Omniverse as noted on this very site.
    • Ben's breakup with Julie is addressed early on, with Ben acknowledging his stupidity and regretting it. As a result Rules of Engagement shifts to Ben trying to repair his friendship with Julie, instead of trying to win her back.
    • The new aliens introduced in Outbreak have their powers described from the start.
    • Kevin and Gwen stick with their initial designs, instead of the radical redesigns the series later gave them.
    • Ben suddenly regaining Feedback is actually given a couple of potential explanations.
    • Ben's characterization is better balanced between goofy and serious, with some of his ego hinted to be Obfuscating Stupidity.
    • In Omniverse, Vilgax was considered underused, overshadowed by other lesser villains, and was often treated like a joke when he didn't appear. Here Vilgax is the primary focus in Vilgax Must Croak, with the Incurseans and bounty hunters playing second fiddle. He actually gets into a fight with Ben, going back to OS levels of power and successfully taking on Humoungusaur, Big Chill, Diamondhead, and Cannonbolt with Feedback only managing to temporarily paralyze him before Ben timed out. He's treated as The Dreaded and it's made clear that when Vilgax is involved, Ben drops the joking and gets serious. He's now formed a Legion of Doom, indicating he'll be an arc villain down the line with the Rooters out of the picture.
    • The take on Frogs of Wars explains why the Incurseans are after Earth (thanks to advances in intergalactic travel, Earth's become a valuable staging point for any conqueror looking to attack multiple galaxies at once) and portrays the people surprised by the aliens in Bellwood as oblivious idiots.
    • Azmuth removes the Randomizer from the Omnitrix, a feature that many fans saw as worse than useless.
    • The Rooters arc was controversial for the massive amount of Retcons to Alien Force it involved. Here, the group is wiped out by Vilgax before they can do anything.
    • The removal of the Ben x Kai pairing that was basically forced in canon with no true romantic buildup and only consisted of them arguing.
  • Friendly Enemy: Dr. Animo is this to the Tennyson family and their allies. Upon first meeting Ben's new team he politely enquires about Gwen and Kevin, expressing pride in the former upon hearing she went to college earlier. Word of God even compares him to Dr. Doofenschmirz in this regard.
  • Future Badass: We get to see future Ben and Makoto in action in Temporal Anniversary, and they spend the whole thing treating Eon as a joke (albeit he was drained from their prior fight). They also mention the same applies to all their other allies, with Ragna, in particular, being The Dreaded to Eon (with this version explicitly stated to be one of the most powerful versions in the multiverse).
  • Heroic Willpower: Ben manages to use this to break out of the Hypnotick's illusion.
  • Hypocrite: When they meet up for the first time since their breakup, Julie snipes at Ben that he moved on fast, given his new relationship with Makoto. Never mind the fact that they had their Relationship Upgrade fairly recently while Julie herself got together with Herve significantly earlier. Of course, when Ben tries to bring this up, it's treated as a case of putting his foot in his mouth.
  • Insistent Terminology: Characters tend to call the Nemetrix the "Predatrix." Even Khyber has admitted it's a better name.
  • Interdimensional Travel Device: The Dimension-hopping, smoothie-selling Professor Hokestar's Warp Field Generator that is the cause of Ben, Makoto, Noel, Mai, Sari, Lambda, Rex, Bobo, Sento, Ryuga, Kitamura, and Gentoku to begin traveling to different dimensions due to Kaito setting up Tager's gauntlet to drop on the machine as petty revenge for messing with him.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Despite several changes, many things still happen.
    • Despite Tsubaki and Makoto's presence, the Screegit is still let loose albeit after Pax was arrested and set loose by Khyber to release the Screegit.
    • Despite several changes, Rook still leaves Ben, and Ben gets captured by Khyber the Huntsman. While it was still part of a plan, it was also due to the fact that Rook pushed several of Ragna's buttons and caused Rook to feel ashamed of upsetting Ragna.
    • Despite all the new heroes on the rebuilt Earth, the Incursean Empire still invades.
  • Legion of Doom: Vilgax is assembling one in the Cabal, composed of himself, Khyber, Vexus, Albedo, Vlad Plasmius, Tarn of the DJD, General Modula, Alpha, Sartana of the Dead, and Hazuma/Yuki Terumi. Essentially they're a new version of the Negative 10, although only half have actually met Ben.
  • Lethal Chef/Supreme Chef: Noel somehow manages to be both! Turns out all those 'death dinners' she makes are actually delicacies for many alien species. So while it's inedible for humans, many aliens love it.
  • Marshmallow Hell: An early Running Gag is that Makoto would hug Ben and accidentally end up smothering him with her breasts.
  • Mythology Gag: Makoto arrives on August 1, 2012, which is the day the first episode of Omniverse aired.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The Alien X from Ben 10 (2016) is called X-Tinction in Chapter 90.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • During the battle against the Weatherheads, Ben opts to simply smash the weather machine they were using, which unleashes a massive storm in the area. Even the evil robots call him out on that.
    • Twice in Malefactor, though downplayed in both places:
      • Ben discovers that all the transformations he did for the dunk tank event drained the Omnitrix by the time Khyber and his hound show up. Rook (who took several shots himself) apologizes.
      • When the hound turns into a Hypnotick, Makoto's interfering causes Ben to switch from Shocksquatch to Big Chill, aka, its natural prey. Ben immediately calls her out on this and she sheepishly apologizes.
  • The Nicknamer:
    • Ragna refers to others almost exclusively by nicknames, though he promises to stop if they can beat him in a fight. In addition to canon examples, he refers to Ben as 'kid, and Rook as 'greenhorn'.
    • Taokaka can't remember people's names so refers to them by nicknames. These include Changing Guy (Ben), Good Guy (Ragna), and Armor Guy (Max Steel).
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Several. One notable one seems to involve Tsubaki and her failing the driving test several times.
    • Plumber Base has a 'Code Blood Orange' from the last time a female Apopplexian had 'that time of the month'.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Villainous example. Khyber once hunted the Ultimates (Ben's ultimate forms that gained sentience) and successfully killed Ultimate Humongosaur, who died holding him off for the others to escape.
  • Out-Gambitted: Psyphon's Batman Gambit to get the Plumbers to deactivate the shield by threatening to overload the base's generator fails since Ben was turned into Grey Matter, and quickly see's through it.
  • Point of Divergence: Several times this has played into the story due to the presence of others.
    • Because Makoto was with Ben at the time, Ben did not end up turning into Cannonbolt and didn't start fighting anyone in Mr. Baumann's store.
    • Due to Tsubaki and Makoto being with them, the Screegit isn't set loose at first and Professor Hokestar, after Ben wants to buy his formula to gift to his mother, ends up becoming a rich man through selling his formula as a gardening aide.
    • Because Makoto kept hitting Alien X, Bellicus put to vote to see what was going on out there and, as Makoto was being erased, her last words moved Serena to convince Bellicus to restore the universe by 'borrowing' from the world Makoto was from instead of making a brand new universe that was near-identical to the original.
    • Ben realizes he accidentally broke up with Julie significantly earlier and sees her with Herve on one of her televised matches. As such, when he goes to meet with her while she's in Bellwood it's merely to clear the air, with no intentions of trying to get back together especially since he is dating Makoto by that point.
    • Due to Tsukasa Kadoya doing the trial against the Celestialsapiens in Ben's place, Ben will not be able to master Alien X through the battle against the Celestialsapiens' chosen fighter.
  • Snap Back: At the end of Gwen 10, Grandpa Max got the Omnitrix at the end of the episode. In this fic, Gwen still has it with it not being revealed how she got it back.
  • Take That!: In Chapter 57, Will Harangue mentions that Fox News Channel "gave [him] a segment after recognizing [his] plan to be a spy within the Incurseans' ranks".
  • Thanks for the Mammaries: After their first encounter with Malware, Ben ends up accidentally groping Makoto while trying to stand up. She promptly decks him, though apologizes later, recognizing it was an accident.
  • Villain Team-Up: After escaping captivity, Vilgax begins to recruit villains from several places across the cosmos to battle the Omni Team and achieve their goals.
  • Waxing Lyrical: The summary for the fic says that "Bellwood, home to a teen with a watch he wears on his arm that can change his shape to save the world from harm."
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Rook insinuates Ragna might not be trustworthy after hearing about his past as a criminal in Makoto and Tsubaki's time. In response, Ragna tears into his naivete (calling him 'Greenhorn') and shares some of his first encounter with Terumi, making it clear that he had very good reasons for acting the way he did. Granted, this was part of their plan to lure out Khyber, so it probably wasn't genuine.
    • Ben and Makoto call out Tsubaki on keeping her research into other teen heroes a secret from both of them, especially after doing so leads to a Let's You and Him Fight with a recently reawakened Jenny.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: As per canon, several Blazblue characters have this.
    • Makoto cannot stand dogs, going into panic attacks more than once when a dog is involved. Psyphon takes advantage of this in Chapter 92, though thankfully, after Noel adopts Drei, Makoto begins taking steps to get over her fear.
    • Tsubaki has a fear of pandas, calling them all evil. She eventually becomes conformable around P'li, an alien panda, but as shown in Chapter 99 she still hates normal pandas.
    • Noel is afraid of insects, to the point Makoto asks Ben to avoid turning into bug-like aliens when around her.

    Side Stories
  • Apocalypse How: A Class 3b case for Cybertron due to it needing to shut down after receiving the AllSpark Matrix in order to keep it from dying.
  • Black-and-Grey Morality: Discussed by Optimus, who notes that the Decepticons had a point at the start of their rebellion regarding some of the injustices on Cybertron before they went off the deep end and that the Autobots haven't really addressed many of the underlying issues that caused this, being willing to do questionable things to ensure they win the war. He caps it off by saying that just because the other side is clearly evil, that doesn't automatically them good.
  • Cat Girl: As a result of a potion in Kajun's lab that Akane drank, Akane develops tiger ears, stripes, and a tail for a period of time. This potion actually triggered dormant Apoplexian genes in Akane's genetics which are slowly causing her to become a permanent Cat Girl.
  • "Freaky Friday" Flip: This happens in the April Fools chapter amongst the Omni Team due to Platinum the Trinity, mainly Luna, practicing a new spell.
  • Hero of Another Story: Due to the vast amount of characters introduced, this story is meant to give them a spot in the limelight and give character development that can't be addressed in the main story.
  • Just Eat Gilligan: Averted by Megatron and Vilgax when Junko suggests finding the 'Prime' Ben 10 and destroying his universe, setting off a domino effect of erasing all other universes related to that one. Neither wants to do that because it's 'not what they want.'
  • Loophole Abuse: Jetfire and Jetstorm are ordered to forcefully escort Team Prime off the planet by Sentinel, in spite of their claims that they need to save Cybertron. Optimus points out that Sentinel never specified when he wants them off Cybertron, so the twins can help with the mission and then escort them willingly.
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Whatever Ben and Makoto did to the couch that requires them to replace it.
    • Prom night. Apparently, it involved vanilla sauce staining Tsubaki's dress, Makoto having a guacamole-filled nacho-made Sombrero, a poodle, and a crying Noel clothes-swapped with an embarrassed Taro.
    • In the future it's mentioned that Ben, Danny, and Max (Steel) had one in Vegas. Danny still insists what happened to that Elvis impersonator was not their fault.
  • Not Me This Time: Everyone assumes the above "Freaky Friday" Flip was another one of Kajun's experiments, though when confronted she is confused and says she would have made countermeasures if she had. It turns out it was Luna miscasting a spell.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: As Megatron points out to Sentinel, his current plans (essentially turning Cybertron into a dictatorship with him at the helm, while planning to expand to the rest of the galaxy) sounds an awful lot like something a Decepticon would say.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: When Shockwave suggests stealing the Omnitrix after hearing about Ben, Megatron vetoes the idea, citing that since it was built by Azmuth, it likely has several fail safes that could be used against them should they succeed.
  • The Seven Mysteries: This is the very first case of the new club created by Jenny that they took on. They solved all seven mysteries, but the seventh one was actually a very real Horror that was taken down by Garo.
  • Supreme Chef: It was hinted before that exposure to aliens had something to do with Grandpa Max's Lethal Chef tendencies, but it's made clear in this series that aliens love his cooking. He's only a Lethal Chef to humans. It's both implied and confirmed that Noel's cooking actually results in her creating actual alien cuisine and is learning from Grandpa Max how to cook more.
  • This Explains So Much: The revelation that Akane has some Apoplexian DNA helps explain several of her quirks, including her Big Eater, Blood Knight, and easily distracted nature, to her friends astonishment.
