Iwa as a whole

  • Aristocrats Are Evil: Downplayed with the non-canon Kurogane-clan, who's elitist mannerism were inspired by overly negative depictions of the Hyūga.
  • Ascended Extra: Instead of the Hufflepuff House that it is in canon, Iwa takes Suna's place as the second-most focused village.
  • Challenging the Chief: Among its traditions is the "Yama no Osu", a special non-leathal duel where a shinobi with enough public support may challenge the ruling Tsuchikage for the position. It is mentioned that Mū became Tsuchikage by defeating the Shodai. Later on, both Suzumebachi and Kurotsuchi use it to rise to the position.
  • Determinator: What lies at the core of Iwa's philosophy, the "Will of Stone".
  • The Proud Elite: Iwa's three great clans seem to be a lot more elitist than other prestigious clans.
  • Really Gets Around: The Kinryū-clan, one of Iwa's three great clans and the original bearers of the Lava-Release are noted to be rather... promiscuous, leading to a lot of Lava Release user outside of Iwa or even Tsuchi no Kuni.
Kurotsuchi: Do you realize that there's over TWENTY known cases of Lava Release users in Mizu no Kuni, including their damn Mizukage?
  • Rule of Three: The upper ranks of Iwa were long dominated by its the three great clans: the bee-controlling Kamizuru who produced the Shodai Tsuchikage, the elitist Kurogane who bear the Iron-release and the proud, yet also promiscuous Kinryū who bear the Lava-Release.

After the time-skip the returned Kamizuru-clan leads a growing opposition against his alliance with Konoha, leading to Suzumebachi challenging him to a "Yama no Osu", a duel for the position of Tsuchikage. He is defeated by a resurrected Mū and killed by him on Suzumebachi orders.
Onoki: The exam this year was also convenient for me personally as well. Kurotsuchi had been begging to become chūnin recently, so I finally decided to end her bitching and just send her team to the exams.

    • He is the Jonin-Sensei of Kurotsuchi, while their canon relationship is unknown.
    • He becomes something of a big-brother like figure to Naruto, leading the latter to call him "Han-nii".

She later participates in the Chunin-exams, where she is beaten by Naruto. After the time skip, during which she is made a jonin, she opposes the Kamizuru-clan's chauvinistic rhetoric. After Suzumebachi defeats and then kills Onoki, she promptly challenges her for the title of Tsuchikage, becoming Gondaime Tsuchikage after her victory.
Kurotsuchi: You'll. Do. NOTHING. You aren't Tsuchikage! [...] KAMIZURU SUZUMEBACHI, I AM KUROTSUCHI, AND I CHALLENGE YOU TO 'YAMA NO OSU' FOR THE TITLE OF TSUCHIKAGE! RIGHT HERE! RIGHT NOW!
  • Cruel Mercy: She spares Suzumebachi's live after her defeat, in accordance with tradition, albeit not without thinking about how she will die in shame.
Kurotsuchi:I will not kill you. You'll die here, a criminal who committed treason against this village. You'll die, having disgraced Iwa through sinister actions during the 'Yama no Osu' duel. And you'll die here as the last Kamizuru, your clan's long history ending in disgrace. All. Because. Of. You.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Played for Laughs in an OMAKE. After becoming Tsuchikage, she tries to combat the spread of Lava-Release users in other nations by forbidding bearers of the bloodline to pursue relationships with foreigners. The Kinryū -Clan's head is quick to point out that this ban would include her own relationship with Shikamaru, causing her to quickly drop the idea.
  • Genre Savvy: She is among the first to notice Narutos Strong Family Resemblance to the Yondaime Hokage.
  • Grey-and-Grey Morality: Her calling the Yondaime Hokage (who did kill a thousand Iwa-Nin during a single battle in Third Shinobi War) a mass-murderer is the first thing that gets Naruto to consider other Villages' perspectives.
  • Insult of Endearment: She picks up Shikamaru's Embarrassing Nickname "Lazy Ass".
  • Magma Man: While being a Lava-Release user, she never uses Jutsus with actual lava in canon. In this fic she does, such as Lava Style: Scorching Rocks Jutsu.
  • Mirror Character:
    • She takes after parts of Canon!-Gaara as a strong Shinobi from a foreign village befriended by Naruto. She also has familial ties to the current Kage and wishes to herself become Kage of her village. The latter aspect also mirrors Naruto himself.
    • As Shikamaru's foreign Love Interest, she also mirrors Canon!-Temari.
  • Nice Mean And In Between: Among her teammates, the Jerkass Risho and the slowly defrosting Roto, she is the quickest to accept the Konoha-nin during their first meeting.
  • Politically-Active Princess: Being the granddaughter of the ruling Tsuchikage, she is basically a princess (with Suzumebachi outright calling her one), and she openly supports Onoki's alliance with Konoha and opposes the traditionalist faction under Suzumebachi.

  • Ship Tease:With Shikamaru prior to the time skip. She even visits him and his parents for a dressed-up dinner.

  • Extra-ore-dinary: His clan's bloodline-release involves the manipulation of iron.
  • Fallen Princess: Genderflipped. While losing to Naruto doesn't get him disinherited outright, he is still forced to move out of his clan's compound, taking up residence with Roto and his family.
  • Flipping the Bird: His reaction whenever somebody brings up his Character Development.
  • Foil: To Kiba, who also has lost a lot of Clan-members during the Third Shinobi War, and hates Iwa because of it.

  • Heroes Prefer Swords: He can even manipulate them, due to his Iron-Release.

  • Adaptational Badass: He fully masters his own chakra-cloak.
  • Adaptational Early Appearance: He makes his first appearance during the Chunin-Exams.

  • Sitcom Archnemesis: with Jiraiya: While they actually fought each other in a Noodle Incident during the Third Shinobi War, their rivalry is about their literary work. Jiraiya mocks Roshi for his low sales figures, whereas Roshi accuses Jiraiya's work of only selling because it's smut.

Thanks to Kabuto resurrecting the Nidaime Tsuchikage as her partner, she defeats him and Roshi, killing Onoki afterwards. Thus having become Yondaime Tsuchikage, Kurotsuchi promptly challenges her in return, defeating her, Mu and Kusari alongside Shikamaru and Han.

    • To Tsunade: She also is the granddaughter of a Kage who left her village for personal reasons during a time of need. Where Suzumebachi wants to be Kage, Tsuande doesn't. And whereas Suzumebachi's time of absence is a detriment to her political ambitions, Tsunade cites hers as a reason why she shouldn't be Hokage.
  • Hero's Evil Predecessor: To Kurotsuchi, who choses to have her less than one-day tenure as Tsuchikage be treated as a full reign, leading the "Yondaime Tsuchikage" to go down in history as a madwoman who broke the traditions of Iwa, ruled for less than a day and would have started a war with Konoha had she not been stopped.
  • Hypocrite: As pointed out by Kurotsuchi during their 'Yama no Osu': She calls her out for hiding underground while hiding inside her beehive, she calls Mu and Onoki "weak" despite having to use the former to defeat the latter, she accuses Kurotsuchi of conspiring with Konoha while being helped by Kabuto and still claims to care about Iwa despite abandoning it right after the Third Shinobi World War.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: After riding a wave of public support for her traditionalist stances against Onoki, she promptly loses loses all of this support by breaking tradition and killing him after losing the duel, leading the shocked crowd to support Kurotsuchi enough to challenge and depose.
