Leadership

    Gaara

Gaara

The youngest son of the Yondaime Kazekage and the jinchūriki of the Ichibi, Shukaku. The latter's influence hab turned him into a Axe-Crazy killer. He first appears during the Chunin-exams, where he nearly kills his opponent Dosu and later loses control of his Biju, before being beaten back by Naruto, Han and Roshi. With the Ichibi's influence diminished, he mellows out. As per Canon, he is made Kazekage during the Timeskip.
  • Adaptational Badass: Due to not having the Ichibi extracted from him, and mastering its powers, he ends up stronger than his Brought Down to Badass canon-counterpart.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed, but his unbreakable defense is overcome by Dosu's sound-based attacks during their fight. His ressucred father and his own Evil Doppelgänger also manage to overcome his defense.
  • Always Accurate Attack: Using his Magnet-release, he can throw the sand halberd he gets as part of his chakra-cloak with guaranteed accuracy.
  • Battle in the Center of the Mind: During the Shimagame-Arc he fights "Dark Gaara", a manifestation of his former bloodlust, and later Shukaku.
  • Demoted to Extra: Given that Kurotsuchi takes aspects of his canon-role as Naruto's main powerful friend from another village who eventually becomes a Kage, he get less narrative attention.
  • Don't Call Me "Sir": During the Shimagame-Arc, he insists that the other jinchūriki simply call him "Gaara" instead of "Kazekage-sama" or "Gaara-sama".
  • Karma Houdini: Discussed during his Battle in the Center of the Mind: Gaara buried his monstrous past far away and thus never really faced the psychological consequences of his former bloodlust, whereas his status as Kazekage prevented any social consequences of his brutality.
  • No-Respect Guy: Due to being Young and in Charge, on top of having been Kage for less than a month during the Suna-arc and Suna's council wielding more power during the three years without a Kazekage, he struggles to keep the council in line.
  • Super Mode: He masters his own chakra-cloak during the Shimagame-arc.

The Sand-Siblings

    Kankurō

Kankurō

Gaara's older brother and a ninja puppeteer. Like his siblings, he is first introduced during the Chunin-exams and later participates in the Sand-Sound-invasion, being defeated by Hinata. He becomes a Jonin during the timeskip, at returns for the Suna-Arc, where he is falsely accused of Kabuto's grave-robbing and a murder related to it.
  • Clear My Name: Sasori's agents inside Suma frame him for robbing graves, something that is actually done by Kabuto.
  • Mythology Gag: Hinata defeats him by channelling her chakra into his strings, similarly to how Neji defeated Kidōmaru in canon.
  • Right Through the Wall: Upon showing Naruto his guest-room, Gaara remarks on the sounds Kankurō and his previous girlfriend used to make while occupying a similar room.
  • Throwing the Fight: He immediately surrenders when he is chosen as Gaara's opponent during the final phase of the Chunin-exams.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: After his sister fails to hold all of their pursuers during the chase to reach Gaara, he also tries it, but like Shikamaru, Hinata steps up to fight him, leading once again to a The Rest Shall Pass.

    Temari

Temari

Gaara's and Kankurō's older sister. Like her siblings, she is first introduced during the Chunin-exams, where she loses to Kurotsuchi. She also fights in the Sand-Sound invasion, where she is defeated by Shikamaru. She is made a Jonin during the time-skip, and trains a team of Genin participating in the Chunin-exams at Suna.
  • Badass Teacher: She is noted to often help out at Suna's Shinobi-academy, and eventually takes on a Genin-team.
  • The Bus Came Back: She returns as Jonin-sensei for the Chunin-exams in Kumo and fights in the invasion, albeit her perspective is not shown.
  • Flight: During the Sand Siblings' fight against their resurrected father, Kankurō lets her fly using the Kōmori, a puppet version of a Bat-Suit.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: During the chase to reach Gaara, she tries to hold Team 3, Han and Roshi back, but Shikamaru instead turns it into a case of The Rest Shall Pass.

Other Suna-Nin

    Rasa

Rasa

The Yondaime Kazekage and father of the Sand Siblings. Prior to the Chunin-Exams, he is Killed Offscreen by Orochimaru, who impersonates him in order to orchestrate the Sound-Sand-Invasion. After the time-skip, he is resurrected by Kabuto via the Edo-Tensei and is forced to fight his own children.

    Baki

Baki

A jonin of Sunagakure, who accompanies the Sand Siblings during the Chunin Exams. He is also involved in planning the Sound-Sand-invasion and kills Hayate for figuring out their plot. He fights Anko during the invasion proper, who kills him.
  • Death by Adaptation: As opposed to canon, Anko kills him during the Sound-Sand-Invasion.
  • Karmic Death: During their fight Anko figures out that he was the one that killed Hayate, avenging her friend.

    Yura

Yura

A member of Sunagakure's council, one of Sasori's Sleeper agents working with Kabuto in Suna and the driving force behind the accusations against Kankurō.

    Mukade

Mukade

A Jonin of Sunagakure who guards the village's main gate. He is another Manchurian Agent of Sasori who gets activated by Kabuto.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Him killing the Shinobi Gaara sent to investigate Kankurō's alibi. Before the council he claims that the Shinobi collapsed wounded before him, after limping trough the desert. As Naruto (under the Kyubi's guidance) points out, this creates a contradiction: Either the investigator was attacked while investigating, meaning that he would have managed the insane feat of dragging himself the entire way back to Suna, or he was attacked close to Suna, but Mukade didn't intervene, or was the attacker himself.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Instead of being killed by Gai, he is killed by a resurrected Rasa on Kabuto's orders.
  • He Knows Too Much: After getting himself captured, Kabuto has the resurrected Rasa kill him, so that he can't divulge any information.
