First Generation

    Shinichiro Sano

Shinichiro Sano

Voiced by: Masaya Matsukaze (Japanese), Billy Kametz (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shin_5.png

Mikey's older brother and the first generation leader of the Black Dragons.

  • Backup from Otherworld: During Mikey's battle with Izana, Izana sees Emma and Shinichiro behind Mikey, supporting him.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Shinichiro often looked out for Mikey, Emma and Izana, giving advice when it was appropriate.
  • Big Brother Mentor: According to Mikey, Shinichiro brought him and Emma everywhere with him and taught them everything he knew.
  • Big Good: Shinichiro was looked up by everyone who knew him as an honorable, responsible, empathetic leader who managed to peacefully appease conflicts and unite enemy gangs, while also acting as a father figure to his younger siblings. Ultimately a zig-zagged trope, since Shinichiro didn't hesitate to kill a man in order to obtain time-leaping powers and save Mikey.
  • Bludgeoned to Death: He was killed when Kazutora hit him over the head while breaking into his bike shop to steal a CB25OT Motorcycle for Mikey, ironically not knowing that Shinichiro was Mikey's brother and intended to gift Mikey that exact same motorcycle.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He was apparently "girl-crazy" but had absolutely no success in love, once getting rejected 20 consecutive times. Mikey, Wakasa and Benkei never failed to remind him of his failures with women.
  • Cold Equation: He killed the first time leaper so that he would obtain his powers and be able to save his younger brother.
  • Death by Irony: Shinichiro dies in the same way he killed the first time leaper.
  • Delinquent Hair: In some of his childhood flashbacks, Shinichiro sports a pompadour.
  • Determinator: Stated by Mikey to have been weak at fighting but refusing to give in to anyone. Takemichi reminds Mikey of Shinichiro because of this similarity.
  • Driven to Suicide: In the original timeline, he throws himself off a bridge after Mikey's death, which triggers his time leap.
  • Foreshadowing: Whenever people start reminiscing over Shinichiro's past actions, the man himself looks a little nervous and questioning before going along with them. It's an early sign that, like Takemichi, he's a time traveler who isn't privy to all the details of his current timeline's actions.
  • Informed Attribute: Throughout the story, a lot is mentioned about Takemichi resembling Shinichiro in personality and demeanor. However, little is shown about those traits beyond word of mouth from the characters such as Inui and Mikey.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The curse the first time leaper put upon him is a personification of this trope, causing Shinichiro to die exactly like his victim did and acting as the catalyst to Mikey's dark impulses, as he was the reason behind his brother's actions in the original timeline.
  • Morality Chain:
    • To Mikey. Like Draken, Baji and Emma, Shinichiro's presence grounded his brother and helped him stay on the right path. His death was one of the reasons for Mikey's worsening mental state over the years.
    • It works in reverse, too. Mikey's wellbeing is the only reason he picks up certain jobs, and when Mikey's hospitalized in the original timeline Shinichiro (mostly) cleans up his act and obtains a nursing license just to take care of his now-unresponsive brother. Original Mikey's death broke him.
  • Posthumous Character: Shinichiro only appears in flashbacks, because by the time Takemichi meets Mikey, he is dead.
  • Practically Different Generations: He was ten years older than Mikey.
  • Promotion to Parent: Due to their lack of parents and their grandfather being uninvolved, he looked after Mikey and later Emma.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Shinichiro appears in flashbacks, but he was a big inspiration to Mikey and was also the founder of the Black Dragons.
  • The Reveal: Shinichiro is the second time traveler outside of Takemichi.
  • Thicker Than Water: Averted. Unlike Izana, he doesn't care about the latter's lack of blood relation to the Sanos once he realizes it, still viewing him as his little brother.

Tenth Generation

    Taiju Shiba

Taiju Shiba

Voiced by: Tomokazu Sugita (Japanese), Ray Chase (English)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/taiju_shiba_visual.png

Taiju is the 10th generation leader of the Black Dragons, as well as Hakkai and Yuzuha's older brother.

  • Animal Motifs: Sharks. Vicious, terrifying and resilient, with dyed blue hair and a strong liking for the animal itself.
  • Anime Catholicism: Taiju is a devout Christian and always goes to church alone on Christmas to pray.
  • Arc Villain: Of the Black Dragons arc.
  • Asskicking Leads to Leadership: He obtained his position after easily defeating Inupi in a duel, and maintains it by ruling over his gang with an iron fist and crushing anyone who opposes him.
  • Badass Long Coat: Wears one as leader of the Black Dragons.
  • Big Brother Bully: Since childhood, he regularly beats Yuzuha and Hakkai as a way to "discipline" them for even the most mundane of things, such as Hakkai accidentally leaving the toilet seat up.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Deconstructed. As a child, Taiju had to take care of his younger siblings on his own after their mother died, due to their father often being away for work. It's implied that his undealt-with grief exacerbated his violent tendencies, and his Big Brother Bully attitude is actually a twisted form of over-protectiveness through which he tries to make his siblings stronger.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Suddenly reappears in chapter 258 to save Takemichi from Sanzu.
  • Bolivian Army Ending: In the Tenjiku arc, during the present timeline, Taiju holds off an entire army of Tenjiku gang members to allow Takemichi and Naoto to escape.
  • Cain and Abel: The Cain to Hakkai's Abel, being the abusive older sibling who would hit Hakkai more to protect their sister. Taiju breaking his promise to Hakkai and continuing to beat Yuzuha leads Hakkai to leave Toman and join the Black Dragons to kill Taiju, even after promising to free Yuzuha if Taka lets Hakkai join the Black Dragons because he believes Taiju won't keep his agreement. Later on, it's revealed that Yuzuha was actually protecting Hakkai from Taiju, taking the beatings for him.
  • Churchgoing Villain: A deeply religiously devoted gang leader who regularly abuses his brother and sister.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Deconstructed. He claims that his treatment of his siblings, in particular Hakkai, is for their own sake. That doesn't make his Domestic Abuse any better, nor does the story portray it in a positive light.
  • Domestic Abuse: Regularly hits his younger siblings, telling Hakkai when they were young that he hits him because he loves him and it hurts him when he falls short of his expectations.
  • Dynamic Entry:
    • Running across the street and tackling Takemichi to the ground.
    • Dashing across the battlefield on his bike before jumping off it and sending it crashing into Sanzu, saving Takemichi at the very last moment.
  • 11th-Hour Ranger: After being absent from the story since the Black Dragon arc, Taiju suddenly shows up halfway through the final fight as captain of the new Toman's Sixth Division, and mows down most of the remaining Kanto Manji forces on his own.
  • Foil: To Taka, who's a kind, loving older brother to his two younger sisters in place of their busy single mother. Taiju, on the other hand, has a father busy with work and is cruel to his younger siblings, regularly beating them. Hakkai has a good relationship with his division captain Taka, admiring him for being a good older brother, but decides to kill his older brother Taiju to stop his abuse of their sister Yuzuha.
  • Freudian Excuse: Yuzuha suggests that his Big Brother Bully behavior might stem from his grief after their mother died.
  • Genius Bruiser: Taiju isn't just exceptionally strong, he's also remarkably sharp. This was what convinced Inui that he was the right person to revive the Black Dragons.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: The slightest offense — or thing he takes to be an offense — can set off his anger and violence.
  • Hate Sink: His abuse of his younger siblings make him this as he treats them like absolutely crap whenever he's unhappy. This becomes ultimately subverted later on as he becomes a lot nicer and an ally to Takemichi and his gang.
  • Insane Troll Logic:
    • His reaction to Yuzuha and Hakkai finally standing their ground against him? Crying and lamenting the fact that God is putting him through such a hardship as having to kill his younger siblings... before proceeding to try and do exactly that.
    • When Takemichi calls him out by saying that trying to murder each other is excessive, Taiju replies that it was Yuzuha and Hakkai who attacked him first.
  • Jerkass: An aggressive, violent and hypocritical bully.
  • Large Ham: He's prone to dramatic, over-the-top reactions and No Indoor Voice moments. In his first appearance, he comes running from behind Takemichi and proceeds to knock him to the ground, before loudly proclaiming that his "shit just got wrecked".
  • The Leader: Of the Charismatic type, due to his strength, intelligence, and unique presence.
  • Mad Eye: One of his eyes bulges while the other remains half-shut whenever he's angry or having a Large Ham moment.
  • Moral Myopia: His character profile in the second databook states that he dislikes violent people, but he's a brutal gang leader and domestic abuser himself.
  • Never My Fault: Taiju refuses to admit that he's the sole responsible for his brutality towards his siblings, instead blaming them or even God for forcing him to resort to violence.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket: Does not wear anything under his coat, exposing his muscled chest.
  • Only a Flesh Wound: He shrugs off a stab wound to the back, even taunting Yuzuha for missing her chance to kill him.
  • Promotion to Parent: Because their father was never home, Taiju raised Yuzuha and Hakkai after their mother died.
  • Religious Bruiser: Is a devout Christian and an incredibly powerful fighter able to easily defeat Toman elites.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: It's implied that he uses his aggressive behavior to cover up his grief over his mother's death.
  • Spartan Sibling: Looks down on any display of weakness from his siblings, most of all Hakkai, who he "encourages" to grow a spine through verbal and physical violence.
  • Tattoo as Character Type:
    • The Black Dragons emblem on his neck and chest, symbolizing his proud leadership of the gang.
    • Bible verses on his chest and a Christian cross on his back, showcasing his religiousness.
  • Thicker Than Water: An incredibly twisted example. Family ties are the most important thing in the world to Taiju, but he has an... unusual way of showing it. He's been tormenting his siblings since childhood, beating them over anything from leaving the lights on to talking back, and is especially harsh on Hakkai. Despite this, he genuinely loves his family and frequently tells them so after disciplining them - while also blaming them for disappointing him and forcing him to use violence. His influence was such that as a child, Hakkai associated love with violence until he met Mitsuya.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: He becomes much nicer following the events of Christmas night, choosing to step away from his siblings after realizing that his presence was doing them more harm than good and telling Yuzuha that he would stop seeing violence as an answer to everything from then on. In the future timeline of the Tenjiku arc, he's become a successful business owner and, while still blunt, he willingly helps Takemichi by answering his questions about Mikey, Kisaki and Izana. He then holds off dozens of Tenjiku members led by Kokonoi and Inui so that Takemichi and Naoto would escape safely, presumably sacrificing himself in the process.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: He does have a coat, but never buttons it and doesn't wear a shirt under it.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Taiju does love his siblings and is truly convinced that he's making them stronger by treating them as harshly as he does, in particular Hakkai whose soft nature disgusts him. He's somewhat right that Hakkai needs to toughen up, but unfortunately, the way he goes about correcting that behavior is completely counterproductive, turning his usually kind but still-vicious-when-needed brother into a complete Nervous Wreck of a pushover whenever he's around.
  • Why Did You Make Me Hit You?: A usual method of his when it comes to his siblings. In a flashback, he's seen telling a younger Hakkai that he only hits him because it hurts him when Hakkai doesn't live up to Taiju's standards, since Taiju loves him so much.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He regularly abuses his sister, Yuzuha.
  • Younger Than They Look: He's only 16 but has the looks of a much older man, towering over most of the cast and being built like a brick house.

    Hajime Kokonoi

Hajime Kokonoi

Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae (Japanese), Howard Wang (English), Marc Winslow (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kokonoi_visual.png

Kokonoi is a member of the Black Dragons and is knowledgeable in finance, making him a valuable asset for gangs interested in financial power.

  • Afraid of Needles: The second databook reveals that Kokonoi is afraid of needles.
  • Animal Motifs: Cats; he's greedy, cunning, snarky and aloof, with slit pupils. He also gets called a cat by Taiju in the final arc as a panel depicts him with a cat face.
  • Big Eater: It's mentioned in the official Tokyo Revengers account that Kokonoi eats a lot.
  • Blind Mistake: A rare non-comedic example. During the fire that destroyed Inui's house, Kokonoi rushed inside the building to save Akane. However, due to the smoke and his bad eyesight, he mistook her brother Seishu for her and left the house with him. He realized his mistake when Seishu spoke, but by then it was already too late for Akane.
  • Brains and Brawn: The Brains to Inui's Brawn.
  • Cat/Dog Dichotomy: Has this dynamic with Inui after the latter sides with Takemichi, fitting their respective Animal Motifs.
  • Character Development: During the Tenjiku arc, he practically forces Inui to quit Toman and join him in his new gang, as he subconsciously still needed him as a stand-in for Akane. By the time of the final arc, they're still on opposite sides but instead of trying to recruit him into Kanto Manji, Kokonoi sincerely tells Inui that he made the right choice by following Takemichi. He eventually betrays the Kanto Manji Gang after realizing that it was time for him to let go of Akane and live his life according to his own desires.
  • Character Tics: He pokes his tongue out whenever he's feeling especially confident.
  • Cheshire Cat Grin: Has a tendency to grin smugly.
  • Childhood Friends: Inui and him have known each other since they were children.
  • Childhood Marriage Promise: Kokonoi gives a Love Confession to Akane and promises to marry her when they are older. Unfortunately, that never came to pass since Akane died.
  • Declaration of Protection: Kokonoi promises Akane he would protect her no matter what, and he tries his hardest to scrape together 40 million yen for her surgery, but she dies before he is able to do so. This also turns out to be the reason why he follows Inui around everywhere and is so protective of him, as Kokonoi unintentionally views him as a replacement for his sister.
  • Dude, She's Like in a Coma: Kokonoi tries to kiss Inui's older sister, Akane, while she is sleeping, but she stops him. In middle school, he kisses Inui while he is sleeping while imagining him to be Akane... who is already dead by that point.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Kokonoi had short black hair but once he joins the Black Dragons, he has a half-side shave with his long hair in a ponytail. In the Bonten timeline, he kept his hair longer and had it dyed white.
  • Freudian Excuse: Kokonoi's Only in It for the Money tendency stems from his failure to be able to save Akane and get enough money for her surgery. After her death, it's the only thing that kept him going.
  • Greed: Is practically the embodiment of the trope.
  • Hair-Contrast Duo: With Inui, the Troubled, but Cute, stoic, idealistic one who is blonde, whereas the cynical, cunning and smug Kokonoi has dark hair.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Kokonoi changes side almost frequently in every arc that he appears in since his introduction in the Black Dragons arc.
    • After the Black Dragons disband, he joins the Tokyo Manji Gang under Takemichi's division.
    • During the Tenjiku arc, he is forced to join them in exchange for Takemichi and Inui's safety, but he later willingly goes with them, as they can make more money compared to the Tokyo Manji Gang.
    • After the Tenjiku is disbanded, he goes on to join the Kanto Manji Gang, which would later turn into Bonten in one of the timelines.
    • During the final battle, he turns against the Kanto Manji Gang in order to protect Inui.
  • Irony: His character profile in the second databook reveals that he actually dislikes money, despite founding his entire reputation around his ability to win it and being known as the go-to money guy of the underworld in all timelines.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: For all his greed and callousness, Kokonoi has his Pet the Dog moments.
    • He genuinely cares about Inui, staying by his side for years in all timelines and agreeing to join Tenjiku so Muto would stop hurting him and Takemichi.
    • He goes out of his way to drop off a gravely injured and unconscious Takemichi at Inui's bike shop so he would get him to a hospital after the Three Deities battle (despite being part of an enemy gang by then), and stays with Takemichi until he wakes up.
  • Money Fetish: Kokonoi loves money (or so it seems). Pretty much everything he does has to have a monetary gain to it, otherwise he considers it a waste of time. He's even willing to betray the organization he's part of if he gets better profits elsewhere.
  • Neck Lift: During his fight against Inui in the Tenjiku arc, Kokonoi attempts to strangle him and lift him by his neck when Inui tries to persuade him to leave Tenjiku.
  • Non-Action Guy: Downplayed. While he prefers to watch from the sidelines than get involved in fights, he's more than capable of pulling his own weight when necessary.
  • Only in It for the Money: Kokonoi is easily convinced if money is involved and his good sense of economics and math is why he is sought after by Izana during the Tenjiku arc. It's later revealed that this was fueled from his failure to be able to scrap the money needed for Akane's surgery before her death.
  • Only Known By His Nickname: He is nicknamed "Koko".
  • Pet the Dog: In the final arc, Kokonoi is the one who got Takemichi to the hospital by bringing him over to Inui after the Battle of the Three Deities. Even though he changed sides long ago, Kokonoi still has enough fondness for Takemichi to bring him over to Inui and get his injuries treated.
  • Precocious Crush: He had a crush on Akane, Inui's sister, who is five years his senior, since he was a little boy.
  • The Smart Guy: Of whichever team he's part of. Kokonoi is incredibly smart and has an exceptional ability to smell out or create opportunities to make money with as few risks as possible.
  • Stepford Smiler: He presents himself as an arrogant genius, sporting a near-constant Cheshire Cat Grin and radiating confidence. Underneath all that lies a young man who was deeply traumatized by the death of his childhood crush, which he blames himself for. He developed a desperation to keep making as much money as possible in order to avoid a repeat situation, as well as a psychological dependency on Inui, which his mind causes him to see as a Replacement Goldfish for Akane.
  • Undying Loyalty: Muto notes that Kokonoi will only listen to Inui, and that is why he captured them both to defect to Tenjiku. However, it later turns out that Kokonoi's loyalty to Inui is only because he resembles Akane, and he had been using him as a substitute for her.
  • Villainous Friendship: With Inui, in several of the present timelines.
  • We Can Rule Together: In chapter 157, Kakucho tells the Tokyo Manji Gang that Kokonoi has decided to stay with Tenjiku. Kokonoi suggests to Inui that he should leave as well to join him, and that he would be immediately entered into the gang with a high ranking.

    Seishu Inui

Seishu Inui

Voiced by: Jun'ya Enoki (Japanese), Cory Yee (English), Alan Fernando Velázquez (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/inui_visual.png

Inui is a former member of the Black Dragons' eighth and ninth generation who is set on reviving the group, and allies himself with Taiju Shiba in order to do so.

  • Animal Motifs: Dogs; he's unwaveringly loyal and devoted to his people, and gets called a dog by Taiju in the final arc as a panel depicts him with a dog snout. Even his name sounds like the Japanese word for dog (inu).
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: Part of the reason why he ends up befriending Takemichi is because he defended both Inui and Kokonoi against Muto, and later called them good people and his comrades.
  • Being Evil Sucks: During the Tenjiku arc, he admits that he joined the Black Dragons out of respect for the ideals they embodied under Shinichiro Sano's management and the next leaders'. Unfortunately, Inui ended up under Izana Kurokawa's management, who turned the once-respectable gang into a bunch of criminals who assaulted people, committed robberies, extortion, and dealt drugs. His successor, Shion Madarame, followed in the same footsteps. Inui describes his time under the eighth and ninth generations of Black Dragons as "absolute hell", to the point that he ended up in juvenile detention after letting himself be influenced by them without even noticing.
  • Brains and Brawn: The Brawn to Kokonoi's Brains.
  • Cat/Dog Dichotomy: Has this dynamic with Kokonoi after siding with Takemichi, fitting their respective Animal Motifs.
  • Childhood Friends: Kokonoi and him have known each other since they were children.
  • Combat Stilettos: Several official artworks, including ones featuring his Black Dragon uniform, show Inui wearing high heels.
  • The Comically Serious: His reserved but brutally honest personality is sometimes used for humor when contrasted against more enthusiastic or childish characters. When shown the Thousand Winters shirt that Chifuyu designed, his reaction is to spit on it then walk away, saying that there's no way he's ever wearing something like that.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Losing his sister in a house fire destroyed his family, causing him to get involved in gang life.
  • Defrosting Ice King: Inui starts out as downright menacing and callous to everyone who isn't part of the Black Dragons. After he and Kokonoi join Toman following Taiju's defeat, he becomes cordial but remains distant. However, he begins to defrost when Takemichi stands up for him and Kokonoi against Muto, then promises to rescue Kokonoi from Tenjiku. In the succeeding events, he ends up on good terms with the rest of the cast, and even runs a bike shop with Draken by the time of the final arc.
  • The Dragon: He used to be Izana's right-hand man during his days as leader of the Black Dragons, and it's implied that he went on to become Madarame's when he inherited Izana's position.
  • Hair-Contrast Duo: With Kokonoi. Inui, the Troubled, but Cute, stoic, idealistic one is blonde, whereas the cynical, cunning and smug Kokonoi has dark hair.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He becomes one of Takemichi's most valuable allies from the Tenjiku arc onwards.
  • Hero-Worshipper: Of Shinichiro. Takemichi reminds Inui of him, which is why he decides to trust him.
  • Hidden Depths: While seemingly stoic, Inui is actually passionate with his ideals and goals in regards to the Black Dragons. The Tenjiku arc reveals that despite his initial aggressive behavior and callousness, he always disliked being involved in crime or attacking civilians, and dreams of giving the Black Dragons their former glory as an honorable delinquent gang back.
  • I Am What I Am: During the Kanto incident, when Inui confronts Kokonoi, he reminds him that he is not Akane, his dead sister.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Inui grows out his hair in the Bonten timeline.
  • Only Known By His Nickname: He is nicknamed "Inupi" and is rarely called by his given name or surname.
  • Pipe Pain: Hits Mitsuya in the head with one during the Christmas fight, badly injuring him.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: He likes pink and purple, cares about fashion, frequently wears high heels, and won't hesitate to beat up or stab anyone who gets on his nerves.
  • Scars Are Forever: He has a burn scar over his left eye.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Inui looks like his older sister, Akane, and for a while, Kokonoi treats him as a substitute for his affections.
  • The Stoic: Downplayed. Inui is usually shown as quiet and rarely lets much of his thoughts show in his face, but he does emote at times.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: A classic example of this trope. He's very cold, distant and uncommunicative when first introduced, and remains quiet and stoic around people he's not close with even post-Character Development. However, around those he knows and trusts, he shows himself to be truly loyal, dependable and considerate.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Early Inui was cold, aggressive and rude to everyone but Taiju and Kokonoi. Following the Black Dragons arc, he slowly starts to open up to others, befriends and interacts with other characters, and turns into a much kinder, warmer person.
  • Undying Loyalty: Inui is ultimately loyal to Kokonoi, to Shinichiro Sano and the ideals of the first generation of the Black Dragons, and later to Takemichi.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: In the final arc, he calls out Wakasa and Benkei for joining Brahman and the Kantou Manji Gang, saying that Shinichiro wouldn't have wanted this.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Lampshaded. He points a knife at Yuzuha and threatens to kill her, claiming not to care that she's a girl.
