The Witches

    Charlotte

Charlotte

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/charlotte1_1_6.png
"The world is an amusing place. It's amusing because it's full of troubles, contradictions and silliness."
The young witch who attends the tea party for the first time. Marilyn's granddaughter.

The protagonist, a young witch who's Marilyn's granddaughter. She's cheerful, short-tempered and curious, wanting to show to her fellow witches that she's capable despite her young age.

Like her grandmother, she gets along with humans, but keeps them at distance, due to Fantastic Racism from their part. Charlotte wants to befriend the other witches, since they're the last of their kind.

  • A Day in the Limelight: This game is focused on her, in comparison to Trick & Treat, which was focused on her familiar, Amelia.
  • Cute Witch: She's a 16-year-old witch, who's not ugly.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: Since she's half human and half witch, Charlotte feels she doesn't have a place to belong to. Upon meeting the witches, she tries to befriend and know them better, happy to finally meet more people like her.
  • Does Not Like Spam: Tomatoes, a Call-Back from Trick & Treat.
  • Heroic BSoD: After being forced to curse Mirabell into a Deep Sleep so she won't be able to commit suicide. She runs off to Andrea's room and breaks into tears offscreen.
  • How We Got Here: In The Stinger, it's revealed she has told the whole game story to Amelia (as she promised to do in Trick & Treat).
  • Identical Grandson: People keep mistaking her for her grandmother, Marilyn, when transformed by Andrea's library. They look similar.
  • Sweet Tooth: She can make her room into a candy theme.
  • You Meddling Kids: Charlotte is the youngest witch, and during all the party, she tries to know more about her fellow witches, to the point of meddling into their backgrounds and personal affairs. However, since they're witches with Blue-and-Orange Morality, they don't seem to mind about it.

    Vanessa

Vanessa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vanessa1_1.png
"I should have used more spells and locks!
A gentle and kind-hearted girl, but not very brave. She likes drawing very much.

A cowardly witch and the first girl Charlotte befriends. She's an artist and becomes very uncomfortable whenever she is unable to draw. Surprisingly, her works are in the newspaper. She can sense danger and will hide in her room when she has an ominous feeling, which is truly a useful skill for living a long life.

  • Attention Whore: Downplayed, but she wants to become a popular artist. Ironic, since her monster curse is unpopularity, meaning that no matter what she'll do, she's destined to fail.
  • Butt-Monkey: In her introductory scene, Renee spills her paint supplies across all her room. And Charlotte doesn't take her as a witch too seriously. Even Marilyn admits that Vanessa is always being tricked.
  • Lovable Coward: She's cowardly and often mentions being afraid, but she's a good friend and is a witch.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: The Stinger reveals she became a mangaka and is finally gaining the recognition she always wanted.
  • Expy: According to Word of God, she's similar to Richard, due to nothing ever going right for them, craving something that their curse won't let them (Vanessa craving popularity, while Richard craves love) and Charlotte not taking them seriously. They even become friends in the 4koma.
    • Ironically, fans have noticed Richard has more in common with Mirabell than her.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Warns Charlotte to not enter Andrea's library, sensing that something dangerous is lurking in there. As it turns out, Sealed!Renee is in the library.
  • No-Respect Guy: On the one hand, she's a witch with the power to sense bad omens. On the other hand, she's infamously gullible and her cowardice makes it easy for her fellow witches to walk all over her.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Has the power to sense bad omens. She proudly admits that this is what kept her alive for so long, in a time where most witches are extinct.

    Marilyn

Marilyn

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marilyn_3.png
"Relax! It's not good....being so stubborn."
Charlotte’s grandmother. Maybe it’s a little strange of a witch to get properly married and enjoy her family life. Cheerful and loves playing tricks.
Charlotte's grandmother and Andrea's best friend. She has a playful, good-humored personality and likes to tease her granddaughter, especially of her hatred for tomatoes. Marilyn often makes bizarre and apparently nonsensical remarks. However, at other times she will reveal an extremely cunning and perceptive side and will also sometimes display an extraordinary level of knowledge.

Unlike most of her fellow witches, she gets along with humans and fits into their society without any problem; but also plays tricks on them. She's also known for her love for tomatoes.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Though she's usually a happy and upbeat person, she tricks on humans with bizarre methods because it amused her. Just ask poor Richard in Trick & Treat. And she once cursed a heartbroken human to become a witch.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: Marilyn is likely smarter and more perceptive than even Andrea, but unlike Andrea she has no real ambition or long-term plans; on the rare occasion she does act it's usually For the Lulz.
  • Cryptic Conversation: Tends to make confusingly vague remarks, though not as much as Stephanie does.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: She wears purple clothing and she has a very refined manner, though she can be strange even by witch standards.
  • Jackass Genie: According to Charlotte in Trick & Treat, Marilyn has been helping humans with bizarre methods, such as vampirizing Richard in order for him to find true love. Even Richard himself invokes this trope when talking about her.
  • Morality Chain: The library scene with Sealed Renee implies that Marilyn is this to Andrea.
  • Identical Grandson: Andrea's Library Realm reveals that when she was young, she looked like Charlotte with side-swept bangs, by making them look almost the same, or something, such that its inhabitants think Charlotte's Marilyn.
  • Troll: Likes to rub people the wrong way. Such as constantly offering Charlotte tomatoes.
  • Trickster Mentor: Acts this way towards Charlotte.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Andrea.

    Andrea

Andrea

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/andrea_2.png
You're too young to have troubles like this, I suppose.
The party holder, who invited everyone. Is it really a good idea to gather all the witches under one roof...? A very beautiful and mature lady, but don’t make her angry. She is about the same age as Marilyn and they have been friends for ages.

Marilyn's best friend and the party holder, who invited all the witches into her house. A very beautiful and mature lady, but don't make her angry. She is around the same age as Marilyn and they have been friends for ages. At the beginning of the story, Evangeline tells Charlotte that Andrea organized the party in order for them to reach a compromise and preserve the balance between humans and monsters.

Andrea is so determined to accomplish her goal that she won't hesitate to kill her fellow witches to preserve the balance. In the past she sealed Renee, killed her anti-human family and disposed of dangerous witches. She's become the de-facto leader of the witches since then.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Marilyn calls her Drea.
  • Ascended Extra: In Trick & Treat, she's mentioned as the one who made possible an alliance between witches. Here she gets a proper apperance.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Though she's usually a soft-spoken and pleasant person, you do not want to make her angry, at least according to Charlotte. Probably because she won't hesitate to kill witches if they disrupt the balance between humans and witches. Even her own family.
  • Beneath the Mask: In the "Andrea's Library" quest, when Sealed!Renee offers her a chance of power in exchange for her release, trying to convince her that Humans Are the Real Monsters, Andrea hesitates for a while and almost accepts. Not saying the right thing to her will result in a Bad End, with Renee regaining her true personality and The End of the World as We Know It.
  • Big Good: She's mostly an authority figure when she actually shows up.
  • Lady of War: Being super-refined and super-dangerous are her most pronounced traits.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: Andrea seems more interested in preserving the balance between humans and witches. In fact, this is the reason why she invited the witches to her tea party.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Is almost always seen having some sort of smile on her face, and as Charlotte puts it, comes of as highly unsettling to those around her.
  • Really 700 Years Old: She's 200+ years old and older than Marilyn.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Killed her parents when they refused to coexist with humans.
  • Utopia Justifies the Means: Everything she does is "for the greater good".
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Marilyn.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: The sealed Renee reveals that she betrayed and sealed troublesome witches in the past for the sake of preserving the balance. She even goes as far as killing Evangeline in a bad ending.

    Xaviera

Xaviera

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xaviera_3.png
"It's a shame there are witches like you....No wonder you're extinct."
It seemed that nobody knew her before the tea party...Why was she there? She is a very nice and polite guest. Loves to add a spicy taste to sweets.

A foreign witch who was invited by Andrea to the tea party. She's nice, polite and loves cooking. It's revealed she's a time mage and comes from another world when humans and monsters coexist peacefully.

  • Bizarre Taste in Food: Loves making pastries with strange ingredients, such as seaweed. Marilyn believes it's because she's foreign.
  • Pro-Human Transhuman: Evangeline accuses her of being this, after protecting a human village that Evangeline was trying to burn. It's revealed she comes from a world when humans and monsters coexist (the world from The Other: Airi's Adventure to be exact), therefore she doesn't mind having peace with humans.
  • Time Master: Her main ability, explaining why she wears such modern clothing by the era standards.
  • Token Good Teammate: She's the only one of the witches invited by Andrea who's nice and reliable in the beginning. She is also not a racist or a dangerous trickster.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Because of Andrea sealing the house, Xaviera can't use her Reality Warper powers to decorate her room. There's actually a sidequest dedicated to Charlotte decorating her room manually.

    Evangeline

Evangeline

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/evangeline.png
"....I didn't want this stupid party from the beginning."
She was born in a village covered with snow. Evangeline looks powerful and will easily get angry. A human-hater.

A fiery and volatile witch who uses fire powers and hates humans with passion. She's the only one who is reluctant about being invited to the tea party, since she doesn't agree with Andrea's plan to coexist with humans peacefully. It's revealed she was born in a village covered with snow, lost all her family at a young age after they were murdered by humans, and her powers were sealed by her mother. Evangeline is also the last witch Charlotte has to befriend, and the ending depends on if she manages to talk her out of killing all humans or not.

  • Big Bad: While she's more troubled than evil, she's the catalyst for most of the bad endings and befriending her is necessary to complete the game.
  • The Brute: Is among the most physically imposing witches, and is shown to be an aggressive duelist.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Evangeline grew up in a village with her family. Then the humans killed her sister and mother, leading to Evangeline's lifelong hatred of humanity. And her mother put a curse on her before she died, so she won't kill humans.
  • Fantastic Racism: Towards humans.
  • Fiery Redhead: She has red hair, fire magic, and is very temperamental.
  • Freudian Excuse: Her hatred of humanity and drive for power was caused by the brutal murder of her family.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Makes one when Charlotte confronts her about her past, saving her from Andrea's wrath and returning her beloved necklace.
  • Kick the Dog: After Evangeline and Charlotte find about Mirabell's past and she says she wants to die and escape her eternal life, Evangeline actually encourages her to kill herself, saying she's too soft-hearted to be a true witch.
  • Immortal Immaturity: Xaviera accuses her of having this.
  • Irrational Hatred: Towards Mirabell. Because she's human, but Evangeline doesn't know that until she enters her room.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite acting level-headed and easily irritated by the other witches's antics, in the Bonus Room, she's seen wearing a "I'm a Stephanie fan" t-shirt.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Not to Sealed!Renee's extent, but she's certainly powerful and volatile. And according to Xaviera, she has Power Incontinence.
  • Restraining Bolt: Thanks to her mother putting a curse on her, so Evangeline wouldn't kill humans.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail
  • Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds: Evangeline does some horrible things, hates humans, and is extremely ruthless. But she's so clearly damaged and a lot of her actions come across as that a sad, lonely woman who doesn't want to lose more people like her and can't understand why her family and Andrea want to coexist with humans so badly. And there are various endings in which she actually destroys the world.
  • You Remind Me of X: In the Normal and True Ending, Evangeline says Charlotte reminds her of her dead sister Irina. It's also a step to finally befriend her and convince her that humans and monsters can coexist after all.

    Mirabell

Mirabell

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mirabell_1.png
"*sob* I never dreamt something like this would happen..."
A sweet but very shy girl. Loves collects wedding dresses.

A shy and socially awkward witch. She's prone to tears and loves collecting wedding dresses, even wearing one for the party.

It's revealed she's actually a human. Her parents organized an Arranged Marriage with a marquess because of financial problems. Even though Mirabell was happy to become a bride, she eventually found that the marquess was just using her and was planning to kill her after he got fed up with her. Mirabell fell into despair and made a contract with a demon, turning her into a witch. By the end of her chapter, Charlotte realizes Mirabell is actually suicidal and is too mentally broken. She curses her with a deep slumber, in hopes that Mirabell's heart will be healed over time. The Bonus Room reveals she eventually woke up and is now good friends with the witches.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: Mirabell is softspoken, sensitive, and prone to tears. She also keeps reviving and killing her already dead fiance again and again. And in one bad end, thanks to Renee's influence, she decides to unleash her powers to kill all happy couples in the world.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She was once a girl with romantic fantasies who was forced into an arranged marriage with Marquess Ernest. While at first happy to find love and become a bride, she was disheartened upon finding out that Ernest dumped girls and was planning to kill her once he got bored, just to preserve his good family name. Mirabell fell into despair and made a contract with Renee to reject her humanity and become a witch, killing Ernest. She's been reviving and killing him again and again since then.
  • Death Seeker: After Charlotte and Evangeline find about her past, it's revealed Mirabell has come to resent her powers and immortality.
  • Deep Sleep: Her final fate, being cursed by Charlotte so she won't take her own life.
    • Earn Your Happy Ending: The Bonus Room reveals she eventually woke up and is now good friends with the witches.
  • Expy: Shy and sensitive? Check. Was once a human? Check. Was a Sheltered Aristocrat with a broken heart and bad luck at love? Check. Became a monster after being heartbroken by their last love? Check. A Death Seeker who resents their current immortality and wants to find true love? Check, check and check. Mirabell is basically a genderflipped Richard.
  • Ethereal White Dress: Always wears her white wedding dress, and she rarely leaves her room. Her character is utterly defined by her abusive fiance. whom she killed after finding his true colors.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • When Renee's soul is taken, Mirabell is panicked and believes she was killed at first, seemingly forgetting that witches can't be killed easily. This is because she didn't knew that fact and she's a human turned witch.
    • Refers to the one who turned her into a witch as a "devil". Said witch was Renee.
  • Odd Friendship: Even though she doesn't get along with her fellow witches, she cares about Renee a lot, due to her being the one who turned her into a witch. Renee seems to share the sentiment, leaving a teddy bear outside her door after she's been cursed into a deep sleep.
  • The Ophelia: Still wears a wedding dress as a reminder of Ernest's betrayal and she's utterly obsessed with finding love again. In her realm, she's deranged, cheerfully open about her own insanity, and way out there.
  • Prone to Tears: She's shy and prone to tears.
  • Used to Be a Sweet Kid: She was a Sheltered Aristocrat with overblown romantic fantasies. Then her fiance broke her heart and everything went to hell.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Says this word for word once she realizes Evangeline's dislike of her is because she's human.
  • Walking Spoiler: See all the blanked entries?
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: Would rather die as a human than spend eternity without finding true love.

    Renee

Renee

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/renee_9.png
"Dissapointment, chaos, horror, hostility...Hahahahaha! These are the best!"
She looks like a small child with her teddy bears, but is actually the most dangerous one among them all.

A young looking witch who likes playing with toys and causing deadly pranks. She loves causing havoc and destruction as a form of having fun. Because of her unpredictable attitude, she's a liability to Andrea's plans for balance between humans and witches (and the reason why Stephanie seals her during Chapter 1).

It's revealed she's amnesiac and she's actually an Eldritch Abomination and an embodiment of all evils in the world. Because of this, she can't be killed by normal means, so Andrea choose to seal her memories and her evil murderous persona. Her current little girl form is a result of being sealed multiple times in the past.

  • And I Must Scream: Her fate in Bad End 1, if Charlotte failed to find the one who took Renee's soul away.
  • Asshole Victim: Nobody gives a damn once she's sealed during Chapter 1. In the Bad End 1, when she sleeps forever, it's treated as a moment of And There Was Much Rejoicing (except for Charlotte, who doesn't know much about her).
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Despite being thousands of years old, she looks like a tomboyish little girl. And constantly complains about things being boring or lame and generally not very entertaining.
  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: Was the one who transformed Mirabell into a witch, but due to her long life, she has forgotten about it. Still, Renee acts sympathetic towards her in her own twisted way, such as encouraging her to unleash her heartbreak on the world in Bad Ending 3 or putting one of her teddy bears outside her room, to honor her after she's been cursed to sleep for decades.
  • Creepy Child: Definitely one of the most creepy witches, not helped by her deadly pranks or Orange And Blue Morality.
  • Creepy Good: If she wasn't good-natured, she could easily be a villain instead. Her true form is a more traditional villain.
  • The Corrupter: Does this to Mirabell in Bad Ending 3.
  • Cute and Psycho: Definitely cute and bubbly, when she doesn't talk about how much she loves chaos and destruction.
  • Damsel in Distress: In Chapter 1, she's found unconscious, since someone stole her soul and it's up to Charlotte to find the culprit. If you don't find the culprit on time, Renee will sleep forever, resulting in a bad end.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: Renee is described to have an "evil idea of humor" by Vanessa. According to the profiles, she can't tell the difference between fun or evil.
  • I Owe You My Life: After Charlotte returns her soul in Chapter 1. She becomes smitten with Charlotte and wants to befriend her.
  • Living Forever Is Awesome: She knows she's immortal and loves it.
  • Older Than They Look: She's actually one of the oldest (if possibly the oldest) witches and the embodiment of all evils in the world.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Is not easily fazed by most everything that happens in the story. In fact, she enjoys the havoc and destruction.
  • Psychopathic Womanchild: She's obviously deranged and maniacal. Her true form is more serious and focused, but still homicidal and insane.
  • Slasher Smile: She has this everytime she goes Ax-Crazy, combined with her red eyes glowing.
  • Social Darwinist: Tells Charlotte that she believes there is no good and evil; there is only power.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning
  • Third-Person Person: She refers to herself as this, to accentuate her childish demeanor.
    Renee: "Renee likes it!"
  • Token Evil Teammate: She's... a little more unpredictable. So much that Stephanie took her soul away so she won't cause more damage.
  • Token Mini-Moe: As a result of being sealed away many times.

    Stephanie

Stephanie

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/stephanie_16.png
"Andrea is a great witch. Her wish is to protect everybody..."
A silent witch who seldom talks. Her black dress looks dignified.

A silent witch. She's very popular with the witches due to being a talented piano player. She holds Andrea in extremely high esteem and looks up to her, believing that she can maintain the balance between humans and monsters.

It's revealed she isn't actually a guest, but lives in Andrea's house as her apprentice. During Chapter 1, she's displeased at how unpredictable and dangerous Renee is (not knowing that Renee has already been sealed in the past and her true personality is way more dangerous), so she seals her until Charlotte's intervention.

Others

     Cathy and Polly

Cathy and Polly

Andrea's housekeeper and maid, respectively.

  • Pungeon Master: Their speech is interspersed with cat puns at every opportunity. For example:
    Meowsic for Music

    **SPOILER CHARACTER**

Sealed Renee

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sealed_renee_1.png
"Release me...I'll erase all of it, and let the monsters have a fresh start..."
Renee's true form, having been sealed by Andrea in order to maintain the balance between humans and witches. A mysterious, eldritch, demonic entity of evil, she's one of the most powerful witches. She's currently sealed in Andrea's library, her body being an amnesiac little girl who has no memory of how dangerous she is, but still dangerous and maniacal. She wants to kill all humans and control the world through fear.
  • And I Must Scream: She's sealed in a book in Andrea's library and she's conscious of it. The only reason why she hasn't gone insane is that she's already crazy to begin with.
  • Ax-Crazy: She appears as a voice in the library at first, laughing at how witches have weakened over the years and how Andrea won't be stopping her forever.
  • Break Them by Talking: To Andrea in the library scene. She almost falls for it, if not for Charlotte's intervention, posing as Marilyn.
  • Eldritch Abomination: According to a book in Andrea's library, she's the embodiment of all evils in the world.
  • Evil Has a Bad Sense of Humor: Like her younger counterpart, she has the tendency to crack dark and morbid jokes.
  • Faux Affably Evil: To Charlotte.
  • Immortality Immorality: Good God, is it ever.
  • Lean and Mean
  • Perpetual Smiler: Unlike her younger counterpart's Slasher Smile, she's more of a Smug Snake.
  • Smug Snake: This Renee is arrogant and sadistic when in control of a situation. But when the tables are turned, she retreats.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Thanks to Andrea. But not so much in Bad End 2, when she's freed from her prison thanks to Charlotte not stopping Andrea's doubt.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: To the current Renee, who looks like a little girl as a result of being sealed away many times and losing some of her memories as well.
  • Walking Spoiler
