Attack

     Peashooter
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/peashooter_0.png
ROLE: ATTACK
Since simplicity and spirit are the bedrock of a Peashooter's charm, their innocent appearance may lead enemies to underestimate them.
Peashooters are the basic frontline infantry class of the Plant army. They are excellent at crowd-control, being able to deal splash damage with their primary weapons, take out crowds with explosives, and mow down incoming waves with their Pea Gatling ability.
  • Action Bomb: The Chili Bean Bomb is a powerful explosive that is great for clearing groups of zombies.
  • Gatling Good: Like his Garden Warfare incarnation, Peashooter can root himself into the group to become an immobile gatling gun.
  • Heli-Critter: When Hyper is active, not only does the Peashooter move faster, but it can also spin its leafy legs around to slow its descent when air-borne, giving it a limited ability to glide. It can still shoot too.
  • Homing Projectile: The Homing Pea upgrade.
  • Jack of All Stats: The Peashooter is the most balanced of the plants and is easy for beginners.
  • Splash Damage: The Peashooter's primary weapon deals splash damage, although a direct hit is more powerful.

     Chomper
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/chomper.png
ROLE: ATTACK
Chompers are best thought of as the plant equivalent of a family dog—rambunctious, loving, and dedicated to eating everything.
Chompers are the perfect close-quarters fighter for the Plants. Preferring to gnaw on zombies up close, the Chomper relies on maintaining close proximity to his opponents. To facilitate this, Chompers have the ability to vomit out Spikeweed traps, slow Zombies with toxic phlegm, and burrow under the ground for a deadly one-hit vanquish attack.
  • Bear Trap: The Spikeweed trap can be planted in the ground from a distance where it will then ensnare and temporarily immobilize any Zombie that steps on it.
  • Big Eater: He has a seemingly infinite stomach capacity.
  • Eaten Alive: Chomper's most important draw is his ability to instantly vanquish zombies by swallowing them whole.
  • Evil Laugh: Not really evil, but one of the Chomper's gestures ends in a maniacal laugh.
  • Eyeless Face: Chomper is the only Plant to lack eyes entirely.
  • Man-Eating Plant: Obviously, but focusing on zombies instead of living humans.
  • Mighty Glacier: Definitely one of the slowest Plants, but with one of the most powerful attacks in the game.
  • Power Nullifier: Zombies in his Grody Goop will lose access to their abilities until they leave the cloud or it dissolves.
  • Super Spit: His Grody Goop ability allow him to spit a toxic cloud that greatly slows Zombies and deprives them of their abilities, along with dealing damage over time. His Secondary Weapon, Slobber Shot allows him to fire an explosive shot that deals damage at a distance.
  • Terror Hero: Unquestionably fighting for the humans, which makes him a good guy. He's also terrifying to the zombies, as most non-hero zombies will turn and run the other way the moment they see a Chomper coming at them.
  • Tunnel King: The Chomper is able to burrow underground to swallow unsuspecting zombies.
    • Worm Sign: A tip to any Zombie: if you see a mound of broken ground coming your way, get outta there, fast!

     Kernel Corn
ROLE: ATTACK

     Night Cap
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pvz_text_embed_image_plant_011.png
ROLE: ATTACK
Stick to the shadows with Night Cap and sneak more sneakily than you've ever snuck before. Then unleash the mushroom martial art, Fung Fu.
A being of the shadows, highly-trained in the arts of Fung Fu, Night Cap is a specialized unit who excels in stealth takedowns and quickly traversing the battlefields. Her fast close-range moves and high mobility makes her especially adept in taking out stragglers, while dealing rapid damage to tankier ones and dash away without even being noticed.
  • Double Jump: These are in her skillset, which helps with parkour and running away.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Her appearance is notably spookier than the other plants, but she's protecting the humans all the same. Well, unless you're a zombie.
  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: Her individual attacks don't really do all that much damage, but she attacks very quickly, capable of rapidly racking up damage that can shave off huge portions of the enemy's health. Gets even worse with her ability Fung Fu, which allows her to attack everyone nearby in a blurring fashion.
  • Fragile Speedster: She has the swiftest base speed out of all the characters, high attack speed, and a double jump in all directions, but her pitiful amount of health (75 HP), so she goes down quickly if anyone managed to get the drop on her.
  • Gender Flip: Night Cap is a guy in Heroes. Her original design's creator theorizes that she may be genderfluid.
  • Ninja Run: And the fastest character because of it.
  • Non-Human Non-Binary: Kevin Konrad Hanna believes so, stating that since fungi don't have any predetermined sex, she may be genderfluid.
  • Samus Is a Girl: Given that she doesn't even have Tertiary Sexual Characteristics, You wouldn't know Night Cap is a girl until the game and supplementary material mentions it.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: A ruff of scales around her neck and a trail of spores behind it while moving give the appearance of one.
  • Shout-Out: Her emote "Shadow Dance" is an adorably bad attempt at the Turk Dance featured in Scrubs. However, you're more likely to associate it with the "Default Dance" featured in Fortnite, which also references the Turk Dance, popularized it, then made it infamous.
  • Spell My Name With An S: Nightcap in Heroes, Night Cap in Battle For Neighbourville.
  • You Don't Look Like You: Assuming she is indeed the same person as the Nightcap of Heroes, she's much shorter and chubbier, her cap is red as opposed to purple and her face is covered in shadow, with her eyes glowing. She adopts a glowing version of the scar her original design had in PvZ3

     Snapdragon
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pvz_text_embed_image_plant_031.png
ROLE: ATTACK
Blaze a trail through zombie foes with flame-blowing Snapdragon. Crabby as they may look, they’re always ready to fight fire with fire.

     Cactus
ROLE: DEFEND

     Citron
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pvz_text_embed_image_plant_061.png
ROLE: DEFEND
To other plants, Citrons—snazzy bounty hunters who previously resided in the future—embody concentrated style devoid of artificial flavor.
A bounty hunter orange from the future, Citron is here to stop the criminal Imp and his Z-mech... and take out the rest of the zombie force while he's at it. He's a tanky yet mobile fighter who can rush to key areas with his Ball Form, and can take as well as dish out lots of damage.—-
  • Be the Ball: Automatically shifts into ball-form for "running" and shifts back out when he starts fighting.
  • Deflector Shields: Can raise a large barrier that will absorb nearly 400-500 damage. It replenishes ammo when it takes damage, and recharges as Citron deals damage. Really helps Citron last in a fight.
  • Death Ray: One of his specials is a beam that increases in damage the longer it's out.
  • EMP: Can fire one that stuns all Zombies, called the EMPeach. Particularly effective on the Z-Mech.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: Citron's lore states he traveled from the future to kill the Imp and his Z-mech. Sure enough, Citron's special abilities make him particularly good at taking down the Mech, EMPeach will usually devastate it. The game's wiki specifically calls out this fact on both character's strategy guides.
  • Good Counterpart: Very tough and packs a charging attack, Much like the All-Star. Their primary weapons even function similarly (Though Citron has only 50 ammo)
  • Mighty Glacier: Fairly slow without his ball form, but has a lot of defensive options to absorb or nullify damage.
  • Rolling Attack: He can tackle zombies with one of his specials.

     Oak & Acorn
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pvz_text_embed_image_plant_021_1.png
ROLE: DEFEND
Team up to launch Super Sap Traps and more with Oak & Acorn. Log tree-mendous vanquishes with this mighty pair.

  • Abandon Ship: Passenger Acorns have this option if the pilot Oak is in trouble.
  • Fragile Speedster: Acorn only has 75 HP. Acorn and Oak also share health by a percentage, meaning if you try and transform into Oak at low HP then the Oak will come out with proportionately low HP. Vice versa.
  • The Juggernaut: The Oak moves very slow, but makes up for it with a powerful cannon shot, a remote bomb that kills most zombies on direct hit, and a log attack for group control. It can even tank a ZPG. A player doesn't even need a passenger for Oak to be a Juggernaut.
  • Mighty Glacier: Oak deals tons of damage and has a lot of health, but is a huge target and moves slowly.
  • Sticky Bomb: Sap Trap and Super Sap Trap.
  • When Trees Attack: Oak, and by extension the Acorns.

Support

     Sunflower
ROLE: SUPPORT

  • Death of a Thousand Cuts: Her primary attacks deal rather low damage per shot, but their accuracy and rapid fire rate means that getting focused down by a Sunflower will still cause a lot of damage, especially if the player is getting consistent headshots with it.
  • Death Ray: The Sunbeam, and later the Solar Flare Beam, which allows the Sunflower to plant herself and unleash a giant laser capable of melting through the health bars of nearly any Zombie.
  • Healing Hands: The Sunflower is the Plant team's designated healer.
  • Heroic Mime: Much like the other plants, the Sunflower never speaks.
  • Skip of Innocence: Their movement is pretty much always in this manner to reflect their cheery, youthful personalities.
  • Shoot the Medic First: Is often subjected to this due to her powerful healing and relative weakness.
  • Sunny Sunflower Disposition: The Sunflowers are Perpetual Smilers doing their best to support their allies.
  • Youthful Freckles: Seen on the Sunflowers.

     Rose

Attack

     Foot Soldier
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pvz_text_embed_image_zombie_091.png
ROLE: ATTACK
With high morale and no trace of fatigue, Foot Soldiers consider it an honor to serve in the ongoing siege upon Neighborville's brains.
The Foot Soldier is the disposable front-line soldier of the zombie horde, but that doesn't mean they aren't dangerous. The Foot Soldier's first ZPG, smoke bombs, and rocket jump make them deadly enemies.
  • Deadly Gas: Zombie Stink Cloud creates a cloud of toxic smog that obscures plant vision and deals damage over time.
  • Fish Eyes: Like all of the zombies.
  • Jack of All Stats: His balanced stats and ability pool make him a very popular class for all skill levels.
  • One-Hit Kill: A direct hit from the ZPG deals 175 damage, a guaranteed kill on most plants.
  • Rocket Jump: Foot Soldiers and their variants can use this to launch themselves to higher ground or evade groundbound enemies.

     Imp
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pvz_text_embed_image_zombie_061.png
ROLE: ATTACK
Meet Imp, the smallest of the zombies, and his massive secret weapon – Z-Mech. Built with Z-Tech, this duo is down to do some damage.

  • Double Jump: Uses his jetpack to do this.
  • Fragile Speedster: Has the lowest health of any Zombie, but he is small, fast, and sports a Double Jump making him a pain to hit. But let him go for a second and...
  • The Juggernaut: The Z-Mech is fairly slow, but has an insane amount of health and ridiculous attack power, not to mention that its armor reduces all non-critical damage done to it. It can easily defeat any plant in a one-on-one fight.
  • Mecha: The Z-Mech, which insanely powerful and tank. It's actually a spoof of Titanfall.
  • Mini-Mecha: The Z-Mech is pretty small for a mech.
  • Taking You with Me: The Z-Mech's Explosive Escape allows him to eject from the Mech, which then explodes to deal massive damage to all enemies nearby. It has a delay, so don't rely on it too much.

     Super Brainz
ROLE: ATTACK

     80s Action Hero
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pvz_text_embed_image_zombie_021.png
ROLE: ATTACK
Zombies of few words and fewer thoughts, their bows have been looking to “make friends” ever since a plant insulted their hairdo.

  • The '80s: His style is based around a Hollywood Action Hero from the era of the Neon Mixtape Tour. Some of his cutomizations like the Groovy Smooth set or the Glam Town headset very much fits him right in the era.
  • Action Hero: A parody of this.
  • Badass Biker: No bike but is dressed like a biker.
  • Hollywood Action Hero: His entire motif since he's an overdramatic tough guy, and nearly every action he does is accompanied by a cheesy musical sting.
  • The Straight and Arrow Path: An unusual variation on it, but he is essentially using a cobbled-together sonic cannon that functions like a bow and arrows. It can fire arrows in a line or charge up for a single powerful shot. It's accurate and fully capable of sniping enemies from far away.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: In true Hollywood-fashion, basically all of his special abilities involve an explosion of some sort, whether they're riding a rocket launcher, or make a dramatic dive while leaving dynamite behind.

     Electric Slide
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pvz_text_embed_image_zombie_011.png
ROLE: ATTACK
Live wires in every sense, Electric Slides light up every battle with their relentless dancing and shockingly amped up attacks.

  • Afro Asskicker: Has a majestic afro, and can easily fry enemies with high-voltage batteries.
  • Distaff Counterpart: Of the Disco Zombie from previous games.
  • Sassy Black Woman: Her design is based of a disco-era black woman, what with the huge afro, distinctively 60s clothing and, of course, rollerblades.
  • Shock and Awe: Well, she is named Electric Slide after all. All of her attacks are based on electricity.
  • Visual Pun: Disco's dead, baby.

     All-Star

ROLE: DEFEND

     Space Cadet
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pvz_text_embed_image_zombie_031_3.png
ROLE: DEFEND
Space Cadet may be small, but don't let size throw you. Her targeted laser and boosters make up for it. And when she teams up – get ready!

  • Abandon Ship: Passenger Cadets have this option if the colony is in trouble. It randomly shifts pilot control to someone else.
  • Combining Mecha: She can link up with up to three other Space Cadets to form a rotating "Space Station". One Cadet forms the body, while the rest serve as additional firepower.
  • The Juggernaut: Functions as one for the Zombies, featuring the same combination mechanic as the Acorns and Oak. It is slow and cumbersome, but boasts the highest amount of firepower in the game when 4 Space Cadets come together.
