Partners

    Goomblaine

Mario's first partner. A street-smart Goomba with a bad attitude and a tendency to get in trouble. The police order him to help Mario after he unsuccessfully tries to rob the plumber.

  • Anti-Hero: There really isn't much that's heroic about Goomblaine, who really only got roped into helping Mario out because it was his fault that Mario was in the Temple of the Sun when King Shroude attacked the Guardians of Day. Not until he becomes the Master of Day, anyway.
  • Blood Knight: Downplayed, but he does seem to enjoy fighting a lot. Certain battles involve him getting a little too eager to Headbonk or Multibonk his opponents.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Like Mario's previous Goomba partners, Goomblaine is sassy as can be. Unlike the previous ones, he's a lot... meaner about it.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Inverted. The other partners are really much nicer to Goomblaine than he's owed, particularly in the first half of the story. He, on the other hand, can't stand any of them just because. He grows out of it eventually.
  • Jerkass: At first. The whole story kicks off after he tries to rob Mario, he spends about 85% of the adventure insulting everyone, and he's scathingly mean to Hanner in particular when she first joins.
  • The Smart Guy: Rude as he is, he's still the one with all the knowledge on every enemy they come across, so he's at least helpful in that department.

    Hanner

Mario's second partner. A fun-loving Hammer Bro (Hammer Sis, technically speaking) who's clumsy at most things she tries to do, but has a heart of gold. She joins after Mario and Goomblaine help her find her lost hammer while she's guarding a gate, and she turns out to be the first Guardian of Day.

  • Action Girl: Being a female Hammer Bro, she can whack enemies with her hammers with ease, and adds some much-needed fighting power to the party when she joins. Even as more people join the party, she continues to be one of the best fighters around.
  • The Ditz: Tough and sweet as she is, Hanner is still a bit clumsy and is known to not be the smartest girl around. Although...
    • Genius Ditz: She's not stupid, and she has strokes of genius that can save the party's hides, like her business with the Teleporting Trees and her plan/realization about Dulia's life contract.
  • Genki Girl: Full of boundess energy, constantly cheerful, and easily the most talkative member of the party.
  • Genre Savvy: Hangs a delightful lampshade toward every RPG ever in Chapter 5.
"You clearly don't know the first rule of adventuring. Open every chest you find."
  • Got Me Doing It: After The Reveal with Bronson, Hanner calls him a "low-down, dirty bilge rat", then says that she's been here too long when everyone turns and stares.
  • Nice Girl: After she joins, Mario is extremely relieved to have a pleasant companion and someone else to talk to on the adventure besides Goomblaine.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Snatchel and Maizee, and she has exactly zero shame about showing it.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The spunky, hammer-wielding tomboy to Dulia's girly girl.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Says this to Mario when she realizes he's being prejudiced toward Stubba, and again towards Dulia. Mario knows she's right.

    Stubba

Mario's third partner. A sweet, adorable Clubba child who meets the party in a cave after he's separated from his parents. Mario initially doesn't trust him due to his race, but Stubba's genuine kindness and innocence wins the plumber over before too terribly long. He teaches Mario not to judge a whole group of people based on the actions of a few. He's also the second Guardian.

  • Badass Adorable: A tiny, adorable Clubba child who kicks butt with a tiny club, and at one point, rides a giant, dangerous Yoshi around a stage during a rodeo.
  • Children Are Innocent: Six years old, and naturally the most naive of the party.
  • Cute Bruiser: it's really surprising how his tiny little mace can do as much damage as it does.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Is on the receiving end of this by Princess Peach, who squees over his adorableness as soon as she meets him. Stubba doesn't seem to mind one bit.
  • Keet: Very excitable and energetic, and makes the most out of the whole adventure. In the big battle at Golden Spur Ranch, he's noted to be having the most fun out of everyone, while beating up all the bandits!
  • Fantastic Racism: Initially receives this from Mario, due to Mario's past experiences with Clubbas. Mario feels guilty about it, however, and gets over it before too long.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: Stubba is noted to only be half the size of an average Clubba, and even his club is tiny, but he can still bust through cracked walls with ease and becomes the tiny Cute Bruiser version of The Big Guy in the group.
  • Shipper on Deck: Seem to be a lowkey one for Dulia and Benny, to the point that he offers to dance with Dulia in the hotel ballroom in Benny's stead, and compliments her on his behalf.
  • Tagalong Kid: Downplayed, as he's a Guardian himself and extremely helpful to the team.

    Snatchel

Mario's fourth partner. A Bandit who serves as the sheriff of Golden Spur Ranch, he first meets the party when he arrests them for causing a bar fight. After a couple more mishaps, he allows them to explain their plan of infiltrating the Mustard Mines to find the Sun Soul hidden there. He initially decides to join them just to keep an eye on them, unaware that he's the third Guardian of Day...

  • Amazon Chaser: He quickly becomes smitten with Maizee, a badass Dark Action Girl who plays exactly zero games.
  • Fantastic Racism: It's implied that he's been on the receiving end of this, being a Bandit whose often stereotyped as automatically a crook.
  • Four-Star Badass: He's the sheriff, and easily one of Mario's toughest partners.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Snatchel is a nice guy, but being the sheriff requires him to be stern most of the time.
  • Interspecies Romance: With Maizee, the Crazee Dayzee.
  • Love at First Sight: He's smitten with Maizee as soon as he first meets her.
  • Punny Name: His name is a play on the word "Snatch" an Satchel.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: His reaction when he realizes Mario and his friends are the only other people who remember that day and night are not functioning properly, meaning he has to help them at Mustard Mines if he wants answers.

    Dulia

Mario's fifth partner. A soft-spoken, pink Duplighost stuck in a life contract with a traveling Circus of Fear, run by the abusive Bad Boss Diavelli. Her very existence is something of a plot-twist; not because she's a Guardian like Hanner, Stubba, and Snatchel, but because the rare and exotic animals that the circus is known for are all completely made up - she's being used to transform into them. Mario and the gang have to jump through a few hoops to so much as meet her, let alone help her break free from Diavelli. But after a couple of rough battles and handing Diavelli his ass, Dulia turns out to be a true and invaluable friend.

  • Action Girl: Dulia is every bit as handy in a fight as the rest of the party.
  • Badass Adorable: A sweet Duplighost with a blonde ponytail and a pink bed-sheet, whose also very powerful.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Diavelli eventually finds this out the hard way.
  • Cuteness Proximity: Like Stubba, she invokes this in Peach, who calls her "precious" and straghtens out her collar all mom-like. Unlike Stubba, Dulia is a tad uncomfortable with it.
  • Fantastic Racism: On the receiving end of this from Mario, at first, mostly due to his past experience with Duplighosts. Fortunately, since he's already learned his lesson from Stubba before, he gets over it quickly. It also helps that he sees her in a terrible situation; she was initially even more helpless than Stubba was when they first met him.
  • Pink Girl, Blue Boy: She's a pink Duplighost, while her Love Interest Benny is a blue Boo.
  • Shrinking Violet: Very shy and timid. It takes a bit of a push for her to learn to stand up for herself.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Her love interest, Benny, is a total sweetheart; almost as shy as she is and does everything he can to help her.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: The soft-spoken, pink-clad girly girl to Hanner's tomboy.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Scared of her own shadow when Mario first meets her. But she eventually finds the backbone to stand up to Diavelli and put him in his place. Only continues from there as she travels with Mario.

    Sixth Partner (SPOILER))
See Maizee for details

    Ferdinand

Mario's seventh partner. A jovial, fun-loving Bumpty who just wants to surf all day with his best friends, who as a group call themselves the Bumpty Boarders. They first meet Mario in Soluna Town when they help him find the Golden Spur Ranch, and then turn again up much later at Seashell Hotel. After Mario's visit to this place ends up... not being quite as simple as he expected, a few misadventures lead to his team finding out that Ferdinand, of all people, is the sixth Guardian of Day.

  • Badass in Distress: Captured twice in Chapter 6, and frees himself both times.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Ferdinand acts like a goofy slacker, but as the evil Darkstriders can attest, underestimating him is a bad idea.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Introduced as a random surfer who just happens to help Mario in passing early on, Ferdinand and his friends don't turn up again until Chapter 6, and surprise! He's a Guardian!
  • Chick Magnet: Well, the female receptionist at Seashell Hotel is certainly smitten with him.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Can sometimes come off as a little spacey. He and his friends are even noted to being a little eccentric, not that that's a bad thing.
  • Nice Guy: Ferdinand and his fellow Bumpty Boarders are exceptionally friendly and generous. Just a little odd.
  • Plucky Comic Relief: Easily one of the most lighthearted and comedic partners in the story, along with Hanner.
  • Surfer Dude: Oh yes. His main passion is surfing, and he has that classic manner of speaking. Same for the rest of the Bumpty Boarders.
    • Totally Radical: Naturally, he talks like a this to an extend too. Downplayed though, he doesn't go full 90's slang. It's mostly just a lot of "dude" and "bro" and "gnarly" usage.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Like the other future Guardians, Ferdinand noticed that the sun didn't move in the sky... he just figured that everything happens for a reason and went with it.

Villains

Spoiler Characters

    Maizee
Maizee. A strong and independent Crazee Dayzee who travels around Chronoside for her own purposes. For a while, she appears to be a major villain, but Mario's intense adventure in Chapter 5 reveals her true motives; it turns out, she's not at all who the heroes thought she was. Her status as a partner is a definite spoiler, hence why her name is marked as such, and why her bio here is so vague. And yes, she's a Guardian too.

  • Acquired Poison Immunity: She's been trapped in the Poisoned Factory so long that she's grown immune to the effects of even the strongest toxins.
  • Action Mom: Is a fierce and powerful fighter, and also Daymien's mother.
  • Bad Boss: Appears as such for her Pirhana Plant trio. Turns out, the one abusing them was actually Bulbin.
  • Dark Action Girl: Is one for a while, until her Heel–Face Turn in Chapter 5. She promptly loses the "dark" part, but certainly not the latter parts.
  • Good All Along: Yup, she's not the one poisoning the water, and she was only fighting Mario because the evil mayor was threatening her son. This trope is so true that she's been secretly helping Mario from the beginning, even while fighting him.
  • Heel–Face Turn: In chapter 5, when the party learns that she's actually on the good side and the mayor had her under his thumb while slandering her. She makes for a pretty awesome partner, too.
  • Hidden Heart of Gold: She certainly couldn't show it for the first chunk of the story, or the mayor would have killed her son and ruined her life forever. It comes out once she joins the party.
  • Interspecies Romance: With Snatchel, the Bandit.
  • Mama Bear: And Bulbin was using this against her something fierce. It comes to bite him in the tush, though.
Mario (to Bulbin): She's not just a flower, she's a mother. You really have no idea how dangerous they are, do you?
  • Musical Assassin: Just like all Crazee Dayzees, she can fight enemies by singing.
  • Recurring Boss: For a while. Until the Heel–Face Turn.
  • Stealth Mentor: Maizee repeatedly helped the party from the shadows, wanting them to beat her every time and eventually free her from Bulbin's control. Naturally, despite having heard a confession from the Man Behind the Man, Mario's still a little reluctant to trust her since the last villain to claim that he'd been on Mario's side all along turned out to be the Big Bad.
  • Team Mom: Surprisingly enough, she takes on the "mom" role in the party once she joins, almost as soon as her kind side is revealed.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Is one for Bulbin, who was threatening to kill her son if she didn't help him. She gets better.
  • Walking Spoiler: The fact she isn't all that villainous and actually joins Mario as the sixth partner, and by extension, Guardian of the Sun.

    Bulbin
The old mayor of Viney Valley, who's actually the true mastermind behind the Poison Factory.
  • Faux Affably Evil: A kindly old mayor he is not, as reveal in his encounter with Maizee.
  • Saying Too Much: Right before trying to kill Maizee, he unknowingly reveals his Man Behind the Man status to Mario and friends as they're in the same room out of sight.
