    Kinjiro "Jiro" Sakamachi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kinjiro_sakamichi.png
Voiced by: Satoshi Hino (Japanese), Blake Shepard (English)

A second year high school student who accidentally discovers Subaru's secret. He suffers gynophobia in which his nose bleeds whenever a girl touches him. He reveals the cause to be his mother and sister practicing their wrestling moves on him on a daily basis for ten years as part of his training. He states his nose bleeds when a girl touches him because his body developed the reflex. He was forced to sign a contract with Kanade Suzutsuki to not reveal the secret of Subaru Konoe in exchange of finding a way to cure his gynophobia.

  • Accidental Pervert: This is actually what kickstarts the plot. Jiro caught a sight of Subaru's panties after entering the toilet stall without knocking, and then accidentally groped her chest, discovering her gender. To his bad luck, these kind of incidents don't stop there for him.
  • Allergic to Love: He suffers from a condition where he freaks out and gets a nosebleed whenever a girl touches him, to the point of passing out if it gets too bad. His mother and sister are to blame for this.
  • Base-Breaking Character: In-Universe, Jiro has unwittingly become this to Subaru's fangirls, on account of his (alleged) gay romance with Subaru. In fact, fangirls who approve of their relationship (implied to constitute roughly half of Subaru's entire fanbase), led by Nakuru, formed their own club, "Let's Warmly Protect Subaru-Sama Committee" (Mimamorugai), leaving the original club, "Shooting Star Subaru-Sama" (S4), entirely to the other half — the ones who vehemently object to such a relationship.
  • Big Brother Instinct: As much he hated his sister using him as a punching bag, he cares deeply for her, being the only family member with her. One chapter has him diving to save her from an incoming truck and an anime episode has him being there with her on important days.
  • Butt-Monkey: Often get teased, embarrassed or beaten up by the girls.
  • Chick Magnet: A total of four girls are in love with him.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Jiro's full name (in Japanese order) — Sakamachi Kinjiro — has an unfortunate arrangement such that the last syllable of his surname and the first of his given name can be combined to sound like "chicken", something he really has a major complex with (thus he prefers to be addressed as "Jiro") and called out on by Kanade and later Usami.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: When he sees Subaru's panties at the restroom, Jiro's first deduction is that Subaru is a perverted guy who likes wearing female underwear instead of the more logical conclusion that Subaru is a woman.
  • First Friend: To Subaru and Usami. Both girls never formed friendships for different reasons (Subaru for her duties as a butler and Usami for her trust issues). Jiro being their very first friend is the main reason why they fall in love with him.
  • Hilariously Abusive Childhood: From the age of 5, his mother and sister often use him as a punching bag. This went on everyday for the next ten years and what caused him to suffered from gynophobia.
  • In-Series Nickname: He's frequently just referred to as Jiro.
  • Iron Butt Monkey: Being being beaten up and knocked out so many times had made him pretty durable.
  • Mistaken for Gay: Usually happens to him regarding his relationship with Subaru, since most people still are unaware that Subaru is a girl.
  • Nosebleed: He has one whenever a girl touches him. Unlike most examples, this isn't caused by sexual arousal, but from a reflex he developed to stop his mother and sister from using him as a sandbag.
  • Secret-Keeper: He's made promise to not reveal Subaru's true gender to anyone.
  • Sweet on Polly Oliver: When he still thought Subaru was a guy, he found himself troubled by thinking "he" was so cute. To his luck, he soon finds out firsthand that Subaru is a girl.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Towards the end of the manga, he undergoes more training to the point where he's able to fight Subaru's father to a draw.

    Subaru Konoe
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/subaru_konoe.png
Voiced by: Yuka Iguchi (Japanese), Genevieve Simmons (English)

A student from Jiro's same year who works as a butler for the Suzutsuki family. Subaru is actually a girl who dresses like a male due to family circumstances where one of the family has to serve Kanade's family as a butler. Kanade's father will only allow her to maintain her position (and fulfill her family tradition) if she can spend the entire 3 years in high school without anyone discovering her true gender.

  • Academic Athlete: She is said to excel both in academics and sports.
  • The Ace: She's attractive, intelligent, athletic, popular and a prodigy of great talent.
  • Action Girl: Subaru is a very strong fighter and can kick a lot of ass.
  • Animal Motifs: Subaru is associated with sheep, because sheep (hitsuji) and butler (shitsuji) sound similar.
  • Attractive Bent-Gender: Subaru is thought to be cute either as a girl or a boy.
  • Battle Butler: She's Kanade's personal butler and the best fighter in the series.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: She falls in love with Jiro because he promised to keep her true gender a secret and offered to become her first friend, which made Subaru feel relieved that she could rely on someone.
  • Bifauxnen: She can easily pass off as a very pretty-looking boy.
  • Birds of a Feather: Both Subaru and Jiro lost one of their parents and have a significant fear that they help each other to overcome.
  • Bodyguard Crush: She is an on-off bodyguard of Jirou and falls in love with him after some time.
  • Calling Your Attacks: She likes to give what she thinks are cool names to her battle moves. Though Jiro questions Subaru's naming sense.
  • Childhood Friends: She has known Kanade since they were kids and Kanade clearly considers Subaru her friend. However, Subaru doesn't like acting too friendly with her because she prioritizes her role as Kanade's butler over being her friend.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Subaru really doesn't like it whenever she suspects Jiro is too interested in other girls.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Her father hates Jiro with a burning passion and it intensifies even further when the two of them become a couple.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She initially hates Jiro for finding out her secret and thinks that he's a pervert, but she quickly warms up to him and eventually falls in love with him.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Subaru has many female admirers.
  • Fiery Redhead: She has light orange hair, fitting her usually short-tempered and aggressive character.
  • First Girl Wins: She is the first girl Jirou meets and would later becomes his girlfriend/fiancée.
  • Friendless Background: The only kid close to her growing up was Kanade and Subaru always treated her as her master instead of a friend. Once they entered high school, Subaru kept her distance from the other students in fear they could find out about her true gender. Jiro is the first person she can call her friend.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Subaru is a gender neutral name, which is quite convenient for her, given her Sweet Polly Oliver situation.
  • Gender-Concealing Voice: As part of her Sweet Polly Oliver act, she speaks in a voice so deep it can pass as a teenage boy that hasn't broken his voice yet.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She's a fan of the popular "Lost Sheep" series of plush dolls.
  • Goofy Print Underwear: Subaru's animal-print panties on the two occasions she was exposed — cat-print for Jiro, dog-print for Mayoi.
  • Hidden Buxom: Subaru binds her breasts with a chest-wrapping bandage so no one realizes she's a girl. The Beach Episode in particular shows that she has some "decent material" hidden under her suit than can fill out a swimsuit quite well.
  • Homeschooled Kids: Subaru states she never went to a school until she entered high school with Kanade. Before that, they were educated by private tutors at the mansion.
  • Idiot Hair: She has a cowlick that stands prominently atop her head.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Due to the nature of her situation, Subaru is constantly worried that she either isn't good enough for Jiro, or that he's either dating, or likes someone else. Despite that, Jiro always tries to reassure her.
  • Instant Fan Club: She has an all-female one. It undergoes a schism as some members don't object to Jiro's (alleged) relationship with Subaru, while others do.
  • Legacy of Service: Subaru's family has served as butlers of the head of the Suzutsuki family for generations. Subaru's mother died before she could give birth to a son, so Subaru is posing as a guy to be Kanade's butler. At the end of the series, Subaru gives up the position of butler, so Jiro asks her to marry him and decides to become Kanade's new butler in order to keep the tradition in Subaru's family.
  • Lethal Chef: Her cooking is so terrible that she is not allowed to enter the kitchen.
  • Letting Her Hair Down: She lets her hair down when she dresses up like a girl.
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: She never got close to anyone at school because her true gender had to be a secret. After Jirou finds put she's a girl, Subaru can have a friend who knows her secret.
  • Meido: At the end of the manga, she is forced to resign her position as butler to the Suzutsuki household and takes on the position of maid to the household instead.
  • Nurse with Good Intentions: In the Sick Episode, Subaru tries to take care of Jiro after he catches a cold, but she ends up overdoing the nurse duty to the point that she does more harm than good to her patient.
  • Oh, Crap!: When Jiro discovers her true gender, she is utterly shocked.
  • Only Sane Woman: Probably the most level-headed among the girls in Jirou's life; Kanade often makes fun of him, his sister beats up him, Usami's Tsundere tendencies has her always scolding him and Nakuru is obsessed with glassess and Boys' Love. In fact, Subaru is the only girl Jirou is capable of forming a proper friendship with and is likely the reason he falls in love with her.
  • Out of Focus: Despite being the main heroine, Subaru gets less focus than Kanade and Usami put together in the second half of the manga. This is partly because Subaru finds out Kanade likes Jiro too, so she tries to keep her distance from the two until the story approaches its end.
  • Pretending to Be One's Own Relative: In the Beach Episode, Subaru passes herself off as her own cousin "Punyuru" so people don't discover she's a girl when they see her in a bikini. Jirou immediately lampshades the ridiculousness of this explanation (or, at least, the name), but the others buy it anyway (well, most of them).
  • Recursive Crossdressing: On occasions, Subaru dresses like a girl in front of the people who think she's a boy because of her butler job. Usami knows it's Subaru, but still thinks Subaru is a boy who is into crossdressing.
  • Sarashi: She wears one to flatten her chest when crossdressing.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: She always looks stunning when she dolled up.
  • Stellar Name: "Subaru" is the Japanese name for the constellation Pleiades, which Jiro points this out when he goes stargazing with her.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Since she tries to be the ideal butler, Subaru presents herself as cool, focused, and businesslike. Her cute and sweet side comes out around those she opens up to like Jiro.
  • Sweet Polly Oliver: She has to disguise herself as male to keep her position as the Suzutsuki family butler.
  • Tomboy with a Girly Streak: She spends most of her time disguised as male and is a powerful fighter, but she has a soft spot for stuffed animals especially sheeps.
  • Tomboyish Ponytail: She ties her hair in a ponytail when in her male persona.
  • Tsundere: She often resorts to violence to deal with troubling situations and is very easily embarrassed, but also can be sweet and loving to Jiro when she wants to.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Don't try messing with Jiro because Subaru will get you.

    Kanade Suzutsuki
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kanade_suzutsuki.png
Voiced by: Eri Kitamura (Japanese), Carli Mosier (English)

The daughter of the high school's principal, who appears to behave as a rich man's polite and elegant daughter should, but is revealed to be quite sadistic. She is shown to enjoy tormenting and teasing Jiro by using his gynophobia against him.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Subaru calls her "Kana-chan" when she drops the butler act.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Jiro was shocked to find out the well-mannered Ojou and honor student is in reality a sadistic Troll.
  • Childhood Friends: She has been friends with Subaru since childhood, even if Subaru refrains herself of acting too friendly around Kanade.
  • The Gadfly: There's nothing that she enjoys more than putting people in troubling situations and watch their distressed reactions.
  • Girlish Pigtails: She wears her hair in twintails.
  • Homeschooled Kids: Same as Subaru, she only studied with private tutors until high school.
  • I Love You Because I Can't Control You: Kanade fell in love with Jiro because he was the only guy able to talk her down.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: She falls in love with Jiro, but is willing to give up on him so he and Subaru can be together.
  • Mirror Character: She's actually quite similar to Usami in that she also puts up an act to hide her true self and protect herself from others. For this very reason, Usami is the only person who can see right through Kanade.
  • Ojou: She's the daughter of a very wealthy family. Complete with a Big Fancy House.
  • Sadist: She just loves to see people in distress, especially if she's the cause of it. Jiro outright calls her a sadist several times.
  • Stepford Smiler: She confesses that she always hid away her true feelings by putting up fake smiles.
  • The Tease: She just loves to tease Jiro and put him in embarrassing situations. Particularly hilarious during the beach scene in episode 7 when she makes some really erotic noises and suggestive lines as he tries to nonchalantly put sunscreen on her, embarrassing him a lot in the process.

    Masamune Usami
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/masamune_usami.png
Voiced by: Mariya Ise (Japanese), Margaret McDonald (English)

A member of the Shooting Star Subaru-Sama fan club, but quit afterward and is also a member of the handcrafting club. She blackmailed Jiro, with the picture of him and Subaru on a mock date, to be her boyfriend up until the end of their school fair. Jiro accepted because of the condition that she will not spread the photo with Subaru and Kinjirō going out together.

  • Animal Motifs: She has a rabbit motif for her name sounds similar to "usagi" ("rabbit"), and for some reason styles her hair in a way that vaguely resembles rabbit ears despite supposedly hating that conflation.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Thanks to Jiro becoming her friend, Usami starts to open up and gets over her trust issues.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Usami's name sounds similar to "usagi" ("rabbit"), a fact that gets made fun of a lot. It doesn't help that she's pretty petite and the ribbons that bind her twintails stick out like bunny ears.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Since she doesn't know Subaru is a girl, Usami thinks Subaru can make for an incredibly sexuality-questioning crossdresser when all dolled up.
  • Friendless Background: She never dared to befriend anyone because of her tendency to see the worst in people. Jirou is the first person she accepts as a friend.
  • Gender-Blender Name: Masamune is historically a male Japanese name, but it's never brought up within the series.
  • Girlish Pigtails: As it's typical with Tsunderes, she ties her hair in twintails.
  • Interrupted Suicide: In the manga, Usami tries to throw herself off the school building after resigning that she won't ever be able to trust people and make friends. Fortunately, Jiro is able to stop her and promises to be her friend.
  • Leg Focus: Her long legs are accentuated by her thigh high boots.
  • Loner-Turned-Friend: After spending her entire life being unable to trust anyone, Usami accepts Jiro as her first friend and becomes more sociable thanks to him.
  • Meido: In the final chapter of the manga, she becomes a maid for the Suzutsuki household.
  • Minor Living Alone: She lives in an apartment all by herself despite still being a high school student because none of her parents care about her.
  • Sour Outside, Sad Inside: She's neglected by her parents who have forced her to live alone and her trust issues caused her to immediately push people away out of fear of getting hurt. She acts so abrasive and unpleasant because she feels terribly lonely and hates herself for not being able to trust people.
  • Tsundere: A very stereotypical Harsh type, even coming with the Girlish Pigtails and Grade S Zettai Ryouiki to fit the image. Usami hides her vulnerability by acting extremely harsh, haughty and abusive, especially towards Jiro. She does fall for Jiro once he befriends her, turning nicer and bashful around him. Lampshaded by Kanade in episode 9.
  • Tsurime Eyes: She wouldn't be so easy to spot as the Tsundere of the series without the sharp eyes.
  • Unfazed Everyman: Pictures with Usami result in Spooky Photographs and her apartment is haunted by several ghosts. Usami acts like this is nothing to be disturbed about.
  • Weirdness Magnet: She's able to attract ghosts if not living together with them perfectly, such as ghosts appearing in her photos and randomly popping out in her apartment.
