The Hero

The Hero of Solemn—a fierce fighter who defeated the Dark Wizard in a duel. However, as a result, they've lost all their memories of their adventure and everyone they knew before. Regardless of this, they've teamed up with their old adventuring companions to rebuild the village.

  • The Ace: Good at everything—fishing, cooking, construction work, you name it. This is lampshaded by the other characters, who remark on how, even after getting amnesia, they're an Instant Expert at most things they try.
  • All-Loving Hero: Even with amnesia, they're very kind and seem determined to help fix the world. They can "Compliment" any Townsfolk, and judging from their reactions, the Hero's compliments are always well-chosen and thoughtful.
  • Ambiguous Gender: The Hero doesn't have a set gender, so the game uses gender-neutral writing to avoid stating one way or another.
  • Amnesiac Hero: After their fight with the Dark Wizard, they lost all their memories about who they are and what they'd done.
  • Amnesiac Lover: From Willow's perspective. According to Dudley, the two of them had a "spark" during their adventure, but the amnesia made Willow merely yet another Romance Sidequest option. Willow seems to respect this enough to be fine with the Hero marrying someone else.
  • Chick Magnet: And Dude Magnet. Most of the Townsfolk are openly interested in the Hero, even if the player doesn't pursue their romance path. This ranges from the blatant (such as Willow, who is implied to have had a budding romance with the Hero during their adventure, and Maximilian, who moves to town entirely because of his crush on the Hero) to the more subtle (many of the townsfolk talk about how they admire the Hero, and ask if there's anyone special in their life).
  • Supreme Chef: According to the other characters who eat their food at the tavern, they're an excellent chef.

Willow

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/willow_10.png
Your Fellow Adventurer

One of the Hero's companions from their journey. Willow is an ambitious girl who loves building things and designing new Blueprints; she helps the Hero get back on their feet after their memory loss. She is deeply devoted to the town, and wants to do everything in her power to help it succeed. She believes that happiness comes from helping others.

  • Ambiguously Human: She has several traits stereotypically associated with elves in fantasy works: She has a nature-themed name, she's an archer, and her preferred furniture items are all green and nature-themed. But she's never specified to be an actual elf and lacks the typical elf ears Iris has.
  • Ambiguously Related: Due to their habit of bickering, many townsfolk suspect her and Dalton of being brother and sister. It's never confirmed, however.
  • Developers' Desired Date: In the early game, she's ridiculously easy to befriend even compared to Dalton and Dudley, making her the first person the Hero will be able to flirt with. Story-wise, she and the Hero were romantically interested in each other and went as far as kissing prior to the Dark Wizard's defeat, while she ended being the one to find them just before the game's beginning. On top of both of those things, she requests her house to be be close to the Hero's, while two blueprints received as rewards for decorating her house are called "Kissing Plant" and "Willow's Heart".
  • First Girl Wins: Should the player decide to date her. It's even more prominent as she and the Hero were friends before the game began.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Dalton (And with the Hero, to a point)
  • Guys Smash, Girls Shoot: During a conversation, she mentions that she uses a bow and arrow in battle.
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: Dresses up as a fairy, befitting her Nature Hero characterization.
  • Implied Love Interest: There are hints that she and the Hero had a thing for each other back during the adventure that took place before the game. If the romance is rekindled, they will turn out to have kissed right before the Hero's duel against the Dark Wizard.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: It's made clear she's got feelings for the Hero since before the beginning of the game, but if the Hero chooses a different paramour, she'll be a good sport about it. Ironically, this is only made explicit if you choose to date her—she explains in her first date event that she knew being too forward with her feelings could potentially make things awkward between her and the Hero, so she kept them to herself until she knew they felt the same.
  • Nature Hero: Her furniture requests have a "nature and vegetation" theme. Also, during Punkin Day, she dresses as a Fairy.
  • Nice Girl: Maybe the nicest of the bunch.
  • One Note Chef: Claims she never really got the hang of cooking, despite trying. However, she apparently knows how to make delicious cookies.
  • Unresolved Sexual Tension: It's implied that she and the Hero had a "spark" between them during their adventure, but the Hero's amnesia stopped anything from coming of it. The player can choose to rekindle their romance if they so desire.
  • Wrench Wench: She's the one that contributes the most blueprints to your town.

Dalton

One of the Hero's companions from their journey. A clumsy, laid-back fighter with some admittedly bizarre mannerisms, he is nonetheless utterly devoted to the Hero. He's less interested in rebuilding the town than he is in just hanging out with his best pal, but he's so cheerful and outgoing he makes a great welcome wagon. He runs the village's General Shop.

  • Absurd Phobia: He's terrified of vegetables, due to what he describes as "the carrot incident."
  • Ambiguously Related: Due to their habit of bickering, many townsfolk suspect him and Willow of being brother and sister. It's never confirmed, however.
  • Beta Couple: With Iris, should you choose neither of them.
  • Big Eater: Packs it away like nobody's business, especially where Slimeapples are concerned.
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: He has some... odd habits, like shouting out gibberish when he's excited, or standing in the rain with his mouth open so he doesn't have to drink from the well.
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: Dresses up as his favorite person in the world—the Hero!
  • Manchild: A positive example. He's strange and rather childlike, with his hyper-energetic behavior, strange mannerisms, and hero-worship of the Hero. However, these traits are meant to make him endearing.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Slimeapples. He loves them so much, he can eat fifty in a single sitting!
  • Undying Loyalty: His absolute top priority is doing whatever the Hero wants and following in their footsteps. No matter what.

Dudley

The Hero's grandfather figure, who is implied to have raised them. Even if the Hero no longer remembers him, he is full of fond memories of their time together, and he'll keep on looking after them. He loves fishing and farming. He runs the village's Coffe Shop.

Laura

Laura is a studious girl who values knowledge over everything else. She settles down in the village to open a museum and share her knowledge of the world. She's intelligent and curious, and regards even dangerous circumstances with a "Fascinating!" She operates the Museum, where the Hero can display items. She believes that happiness comes from learning new and exciting things.

  • Admiring the Abomination: She admits in some of her dialogues that she's gotten herself into danger trying to "research" things like the Dark Trees.
  • Bespectacled Cutie: She's a cute researcher who wears glasses.
  • Beta Couple: With Terric, should you choose neither of them.
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: She dresses as a bunny, showing off her cuter, more fun-loving side.
  • Nice Girl: Though she does have a habit of getting herself in trouble in the pursuit of knowledge.
  • Walking the Earth: Prior to settling down in the town, she traveled from place to place doing research. It's implied that this wasn't entirely by choice—that she was effectively homeless until you gave her a proper place to stay.

Bubsy

Bubsy is an aspiring chef and loves to be fashionable. He's quick to judge others and he thinks he knows everything. He moves to the town to open up a new tavern. To him, happiness is recognizing your own beauty and being proud of it.

  • Beta Couple: With Maximillian, should you choose neither of them. Sorta.
  • Big Ol' Eyebrows: Apparently, he can store twigs in them. And does.
  • Bird People: He's a bird man.
  • Camp Gay: Downplayed. He loves fashion and being beautiful, and judging from his interactions with the other Townsfolk, he's more interested in men than he is in women. The person with whom he has a Maybe Ever After if the Hero marries neither him nor the other person in question is male. However, not only is he not especially flamboyant, Everyone Is Bi, so he can be romanced by the Hero regardless.
  • The Fashionista: Even though he's the town's chef, he makes almost no references to cooking: instead, fashion and shopping are almost everything he talks about.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: He doesn't get along well with most of the Townsfolk. The only two he really gets along with are Maximilian, for their similarly romantic outlooks on life, and Arpeggio, as they both love being flamboyant.
  • Furry Reminder: He takes baths in the town's fountain. Judging by the reaction of other townspeople to the practice, it's not something commonly done. He also asks for his house to be at the highest elevation possible and quips about sitting on top of the eggs he finds the scavenger hunt just for the fun of it.
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: He dresses as a mummy... and ends up regretting it.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: By far the most jerk-ish townie, Bubsy even makes some scathing remarks about them every now and then, but is always ready to help when needed.
  • Massive Numbered Siblings: He comes from a roost of 16. By his own admission, he doesn't talk to them anymore - not that he would want to.
  • Maybe Ever After: If the player doesn't marry him or the Tarott Monster player, Maximilian, then it's implied that they hook up in the epilogue. However, unlike the other couples, Maximilian doesn't quite seem to understand that Bubsy is hitting on him, and seems to think that they're just "forming a poetry club." Thus, their relationship is more ambiguous than the others.
  • Supreme Chef: The self-proclaimed best chef in all Solemn. But he seems to have the skills to back up his bragging.

Ash

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ash_1_1.png
The Hardworking Miner

Ash is a hard working Dust Miner who loves animals. He moves to town when he begins to feel lonely. He didn't have many friends when he was busy exploring the mines alone, and he needed a change. He wants to explore all of Solemn one day, and believes that happiness comes from discovering the unknown.

  • Animal Lover: Loves all creatures great and small, but especially Wompers.
  • Beta Couple: With Lilith, should you choose neither of them.
  • Dumb Muscle: Not the smartest, but definitely one of the strongest.
  • Fluffy Tamer: He wants to be one, at any rate. He desperately wants a Womper for a pet, but they resist his attempts at taming them.
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Despite vocally wanting a Womper for a pet, the Pet Womper decorative item (which is clearly meant to be a real Womper) is not one of his requested items for his house. You can add one to his house if you like, though.
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: He dresses as his favorite bard, Quazzy Moto. Apparently, Quazzy dresses like an old-time rock-'n'-roller.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: His motivation for moving to town. He didn't make many friends exploring the Dust Mines all by himself, and he felt the need to make a change.
  • Lovable Jock: He loves working out and getting stronger, and will gladly help the other Townsfolk work out too.
  • Meaningful Name: "Ash" is a fitting name for someone who works in a fiery forge.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Wanting to adopt a Womper is one thing. The fact that the villager with whom he becomes a couple if the Hero marries neither of them is Lilith of all people indicates that having an appreciation for things most people consider scary is a pattern for him.

Lilith

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/lilith_21.png
The Aspiring Mage

Lilith is an aspiring Lightning Mage who can't control her magic, and who was kicked out by her fellow Lightning Mages for her poor control. She moves to the town in the hopes of mastering her magic. Despite her efforts, she always ends up doing more harm than good. She thinks that you can only be happy if you follow your dreams.

  • Ax-Crazy: Played for Laughs. Her Superpowered Evil Side goes on some rather... violent tangents, but she always snaps back to normal quickly.
  • Beta Couple: With Ash, should you choose neither of them.
  • Cute Witch: Well, she's cute until her powers flare up, anyway.
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: She dresses as a demon, embracing her inner darkness a little.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Lilith's awesome powers and her lack of control over them mean that most townies keep a distance with her, something which she greatly resents.
  • Inept Mage: She was kicked out of the mage's group because she couldn't control her magic. Whenever she casts spells, things tend to start exploding.
  • Noodle Incident: Some of her conversation options imply she's destroyed her fair share of buildings... and likely people.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: She has incredibly strong magical powers, but they go out of control.
  • Robe and Wizard Hat: Wears the typical witch hat and robe combination, both a solid purple.
  • Superpowered Evil Side: Whenever she loses control over her magic, her eyes glow and she starts speaking in ALLCAPS about burning it all to the ground. However, she snaps out of it quickly.

Zana

An enthusiastic half-orc, she moved to the town in the hopes of finding a place a mixed-species person like her could fit in. She's outgoing and loves sharing traditional Orcish culture with her neighbors, but is secretly nervous about fitting in. She's also the strongest person in the village by far.

  • Beta Couple: With Mel, should you choose neither of them.
  • Butch Lesbian: If neither she nor her potential partner marry the Hero, she ends up with a woman. Meanwhile, she is by for far the most tomboyish of the female villagers.
  • Cute Bruiser: Cute, and EXTREMELY strong.
  • Cute Little Fangs: She has two little fangs sticking out of her underbite.
  • Cute Monster Girl: She's a smiley, friendly half-orc girl.
  • Eat Dirt, Cheap: One of her favorite Orcish foods is Weed and Mud Soup. She generally likes eating dirt as well.
  • Foreign Queasine: She loves traditional orc foods like Weed and Mud Soup and Worm Soufflé, but they aren't really to human tastes.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: She loves orc culture, but didn't fit in with the other orcs. So she sought out human civilizations, only to get harassed for being an orc. Thus, she's looking for a place she can truly fit in.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: She's a Half-Orc.
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: She dresses as a zombie, befitting her very tomboyish nature.
  • Our Orcs Are Different: They're very strong and seem to really like dirt.
  • Tomboy and Girly Girl: She's good friends with Mel, who's very girly. They end up a couple if you don't date either.

(Sir) Terric

A former Knight of Alexandria, he became unsure what to do with himself after the Dark Wizard was vanquished and monsters vanished from the world. He moves to the town seeking a fresh start. He's fearless and has a strong sense of justice, and wants to protect everyone—even if it's from nothing more dangerous than the bugs in town.

  • Beta Couple: With Laura, should you choose neither of them.
  • Declaration of Protection: He swears to protect the Hero from all harm, blushing all the while.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: He became unsure what to do with his life after all the monsters were gone, and he comes to the Hero looking for a place to fit in. He decides that if the former Hero of Solemn could make a fresh start, he can too—and he becomes protector of the people in town.
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: He dresses as a giant chicken, in humorous contrast to his extremely brave personality.
  • Knight in Shining Armor: He's bold, he's chivalrous, and he really does wear shining armor!

Mel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mel_05.png
The Creative Girl

Mel is a creative girl who wants to run Solemn's greatest decoration shop. Despite experiencing failure she hasn't stopped trying, and moves to the village in order to seek new patrons for her arts and open her Decoration Shop. She finds happiness in sharing her creations with others.

Maximillian

The world's leading expert on the Tarrott Monster card game, by virtue of the game having only existed since the Dark Wizard's recent defeat. He moves to the village because he becomes infatuated with the Hero. He's competitive and has a love of games, but he's also a romantic who loves writing poetry.

  • Beta Couple: If the player doesn't marry him or Bubsy, it's implied they hook up in the epilogue... though with more ambiguity than the other couples.
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: He dresses up as a pumpkinhead monster, which is his favorite Tarrott Monster. But it was banned for being overpowered.
  • Implied Love Interest: Unlike the other Townsfolk, he makes his interest in the Hero clear from the beginning by writing a poem about them.
  • Maybe Ever After: If the Hero doesn't marry him or Bubsy, then Bubsy is shown asking Max to "form a poetry club" with him in the epilogue. Bubsy isn't shy about his crush on Max, and it takes place when all the other Beta Couples hook up, so it seems to imply they become a couple, but Maximillian's obliviousness makes it more ambiguous.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: He's not very social and likes being alone, but aside from his obsession with Tarrott Monster, he's quite friendly if you get to know him.
  • Oblivious to Love: Despite his attraction towards the Hero, he seems oblivious to the fact that Bubsy clearly has a crush on him. Even in the epilogue, he's not sure what Bubsy means when he calls him "Solemn's cutest Tarrott Monster player," and doesn't seem to realize that Bubsy's offer to "start a poetry club" is really a romantic proposition.
  • Shout-Out: He's a card game master named Maximilian—just like Maximillion Pegasus from Yu-Gi-Oh!.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: He has a highly romanticized view of life, and he loves writing flowery, romantic poetry.

(Queen) Iris

Iris is the former Queen of the Kingdom of Dirboros. While she initially tried to form an Arranged Marriage with the Hero, she eventually decided to leave her royal life behind to search for a simpler one. She moves to the village to seek this simpler life. She loves getting her hands dirty and learning new things. Happiness to her is living a simple life, free of heavy burdens.

  • Beta Couple: With Dalton, should you choose neither of them.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: She's a Half-Elf.
  • Half-Breed Discrimination: She's somewhat self-conscious about her heritage, implying that being a Half-Elf might not be all that desirable in Solemn.
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: She dresses up as Dudley (even borrowing his hat!), because she really respects him and his down-to-earthiness.
  • Modest Royalty: Zig-zagged. On one hand, she ran away from her country to pursue a simple life, without responsibilities. On the other, her furniture requests are for extravagant, princess-themed items.
  • Older Than They Look: She looks the same age than the rest of your townies (apart from Dudley) but she's around 300 years old. Unlike Toby and Dudley, though, she keeps this as a secret unless you romance her.
  • Rebellious Princess: Queen, actually, who abdicates her throne in favor of living the simple life.
  • Rich in Dollars, Poor in Sense: Despite being a Queen, she's never actually seen Dewdrops with her own eyes.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Even though she's a queen, she's skilled enough in combat to go toe-to-toe with Terric, a veteran knight.
  • Standard Hero Reward: The circumstances of her introduction are a modern take on the trope, in which the would-be bride is instead a still-single queen in her own right, who wants the marriage partly for Altar Diplomacy reasons. To top it all off, the next time she's seen after making the Arranged Marriage proposal, she has gone full Rebellious Princess and marrying her requires a Romance Sidequest like all the other romance options.

The Dark Wizard ("Dark")

The former overlord of Solemn and the Hero's greatest nemesis. Or... at least, he was. As it turns out, whatever erased the Hero's memory blanked his as well. Now he's just a confused, worried man who isn't sure why everyone's so terrified of him. Now, Dark wants to uncover the secrets of his past and to help those he hurt. He moves into the town so that he and the Hero can unravel the secrets of their past together. To him, happiness is being trusted by others.

  • Amnesiac Dissonance: The Dark Wizard was a former Evil Overlord who terrorized Solemn. Dark is a troubled loner who just wants to make it right.
  • Amnesiac Villain Joins the Heroes: After ending up amnesiac, he joins the Hero so they can figure out what happened to him.
  • The Atoner: He's decided to spend his life investigating the force that possessed him and transformed him into the Dark Wizard so it never happens again.
  • The Aloner: More often than not. Some of his dialog options imply he doesn't like to be alone, but feels he deserves it.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: He claims that the Dark Trees and the Wompers leave him alone, perhaps because they're also filled with dark energy. He's a little miffed about this, and says he'd liked to be Womped at least once.
  • Bookworm: He initially takes up reading to try to understand what happened to him, but ends up getting into it as a hobby.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: It's implied that his stint as the Dark Wizard happened because he was corrupted by the evil energy that lies beneath Solemn, and he's worried that random flare-ups in it might bring about another Dark Wizard.
  • Byronic Hero: He's a loner and deeply wracked by guilt, making him hard to get to know, but he's a great researcher and earnest in his desire to help others.
  • "Darkness von Gothick" Name: Literally just called "Dark".
  • Dark Is Edgy: Hilariously so. His decor requests are all of the most depressingly black pieces of furniture, including a picture titled "A Dark Soul."
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Played with—he's an In-Universe version of the traits commonly applied to Troubled, but Cute RPG villains in fanfic. He's a former villain who's deeply sorry about his actions and wants to make up for them, who turns out to have a very sweet personality if the player decides to romance him.
  • Freaky Fashion, Mild Mind: He's still wearing his Dark Wizard apparel and his decoration requests match his style, but he's actually one of the town's nicest residents. He also picks up reading as a hobby.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: At first, the rest of the townies are understandably wary about him.
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: He dresses up as a warrior monk, because he hopes to attain that level of calm.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He no longer remembers his given name, so most people just call him "Dark."
  • Troubled, but Cute: He's handsome in a traditionally RPG-bad-guy way, and he's constantly struggling with his Dark and Troubled Past.

Toby

Toby is a quirky Catfolk on his 9th life who loves eating fish, playing in the sand, and licking things. He moves to town mostly to find a good source of fish. He believes that happiness is doing what you want - when you want to do it!

  • Cat Boy: He's a strange fellow with furry ears, whiskers, and a cat smile.
  • Cats Have Nine Lives: He's on his ninth and final life, and is happy to have found a good place to spend it.
  • Furry Reminder: He acts more like a cat than he does a human: He licks himself to stay clean, likes climbing roofs, and is constantly hungry for fish. However, actually being treated like a cat seems to make him uncomfortable: He's not entirely sure he likes the villagers petting his head or calling him "cute."
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: He dresses up in traditional Dirboros trader garb, as he's proud of his heritage.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite his strangeness, he's the oldest person in the village by far, having lived eight previous lives already. He's implied to be much wiser than he looks because of it.
  • Older Than They Look: He looks the same age than the rest of your townies (apart from Dudley) but he's a Catfolk on his 9th life. Depending on how long-lived catfolk are, he could be nearing a thousand years.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He's lived eight previous lives already, making him very old.
  • Stock Animal Diet: He's obsessed with fish, to the point that he first appears in your town when you ship 100 fish using the Marketplace.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: He loves fish, as befitting a cat.

Arpeggio

A burly bard who hangs out at the Great Library. Initially, he took the amnesiac Dark under his wing, but he later moves to the town when the Hero helps fill the Great Library full of knowledge. He's flamboyant and a showman, but surprisingly knowledgeable and fond of making people happy.

  • Attention Whore: By his own admission, he really likes being the center of attention. He'll even try to get other people to pay attention to him by interrupting them.
  • The Bard: His desire is to be the greatest bard in all of Solemn.
  • Dreadful Musician: It's implied that he's not nearly as good a bard as he likes to think he is. He claims that Wompers never bother him after noting that apparently whistles will keep them away, and when he gives you fishes, he claims that it "floated up" in response to one of his songs.
  • Giver of Lame Names: He admits that he's not very creative when it comes to names. This is how the individual formerly known as the Dark Wizard ended up going by just "Dark".
  • Halloween Costume Characterization: He dresses up as a ninja, because the idea of an Attention Whore like himself going unseen amuses him.
  • Sibling Rivalry: Immensely popular bard Quazzy Moto is his brother, and he definitely feels overshadowed by his sibling's success.

    Endless Forest

Fiona

A member of the Lightning Mages who is first seen firing Lilith from the organization. After the incident is settled, she slips back into her usual job of making sure people don't go into the Endless Forest unprepared.

  • Number Two: Implied. She mentions that someone other than her is the leader of the Lightning Mages, but she has enough authority to fire Lilith and be called a leader by Olivia.

Olivia

A Lightning Mage who cares for the Whirlybugs that can transport the Hero to the Endless Forest.

Harold Pockets

A mage often found telling tall tales about his own magic powers.

  • Cloud Cuckoolander: Does not exactly have a strong grip on reality.
  • Loon with a Heart of Gold: He's one of many NPCs who mostly exists as a potential free item dispenser for the Hero, making him come across as an overall nice man in addition to his quirkyness.
  • Napoleon Delusion: He can be found claiming he's either the Hero or the Dark Wizard. The Hero one is easy to see through, but the Dark Wizard one can temporarily fool the player if he's encountered before Dark.

Beeford

A friendly being resembling a giant dragonwasp sometimes encountered in the Endless Forest.

  • Sole Survivor: The last of the Dark Wizard's monsters. He wishes the Hero no harm.
