The North

    Shirou Emiya/Minato Sahashi

The Ashikabi of the North, The Ashura of the North, The Sword Ashikabi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shirou_ryuji_higurashi_cut_in.png
"Legacy of a misspent youth."
The protagonist of the story, which kicks off with him arriving in Japan after a complicated breakup with his lovers, Rin Tohsaka and Saber, and getting a target painted on his back by Clock Tower for reasons he'd rather not discuss. Upon arriving, he runs into a suspicious woman who turns out to be his biological mother...
  • Ain't No Rule: ...That forbids an Ashikabi from attacking another Ashikabi. He rubs this in the face of Kakizaki, a man who thought he was the only one smart enough to figure this out.
  • Berserk Button: Has a couple.
    • Don't threaten Kusano. Don't swear or say (or do) anything lewd around her, either.
    • Don't threaten Yukari, or try to put the moves on her.
    • Don't act racist towards Akitsu because she's a Scrapped Number.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Towards Kusano.
  • Chef of Iron: The only Ashikabi who can hold his own in a Sekirei fight, and a Supreme Chef to boot.
  • Chick Magnet: To his annoyance and bewilderment, with many of his Sekirei suffering from Fantastic Arousal.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Is not afraid to fight dirty, particularly when others do it first. One example is when he reflects sunlight off the blade of one of his swords to temporarily blind a Sekirei trying to attack him from the air. Or stabbing himself in order to kill someone who's trying to strangle him from behind.
  • Demon Head: Studies Miya's "Hannya Mask" technique and develops his own version of it, which takes the form of an Ashura. Even Miya is a little frightened of it.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": He is Shirou Emiya; Minato Sahashi died during the Fuyuki Fire. Karasuba does it anyway just to get a rise out of him.
  • Dual Wielding: His preferred (but far from only) weapons are Kanshou and Bakuya.
  • Hopeless with Tech: Not as much as other magi, but he doesn't understand emoticons, is surprised that cell phones have cameras installed, and calls data pads "doohickeys".
  • Horrible Judge of Character: When Uzume starts asking him probing questions about Avalon, he gets suspicious and thinks she's trying to find an exploitable weakness. As it turns out, she has a sick Ashikabi and wants to know if he could use it to cure the girl's illness.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: He nearly goes ballistic when he learns that Yukari has a Sekirei. Ultimately subverted when he actually meets the boy, who turns out to be too perfect to hate.
  • My Sister Is Off-Limits: Subverted. After meeting Shiina, he quickly decides that the boy is the perfect companion for his sister and becomes a Shipper on Deck for them. He even outright calls Shiina "otouto" ("little brother") after the latter rescues Yukari from Higa's headquarters, much to the boy's delight.
  • The Nose Knows: He can usually detect what type of powers a Sekirei possesses due to their "scent", though if the Sekirei is a "weapons-type", he has a harder time of it.
  • Sex God: His Battle Harem can attest to his prowess in bed.
  • Shameful Source of Knowledge: Shirou considers the internet to be this. In the epilogue he mentions that he finally went around to finding out what a rather esoteric item used in BDSM was, he's curses himself that he now knows what it is and what it's used for.
  • Slasher Smile: He grins viciously at the start of his second fight with Toyotama and Ichiya.
  • Sociopathic Hero: He doesn't like committing morally questionable acts, but he'll soldier on, anyway. In particular, he decides to risk his sister's safety in order to keep Higa (a full-fledged sociopath) from getting a Jinki. He also comes up with a series of contingency plans to end the Sekirei Plan prematurely, some of which involve outright murder, and is pretty casual about that detail; and he outright tortures (and threatens to dismember) a man in front of the latter's employer, all without showing any emotions.
  • Unstoppable Rage: The sight of Kusano being threatened by Yomi causes him to go off the deep end, and he brutally stomps the arrogant Sekirei.

Shirou's Sekirei

    General
  • Balanced Harem: Though he tends to give more attention to Akitsu and Kusano, Shirou does not play favorites with them.
  • Battle Harem: As expected of Sekirei.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: Their Ashikabi is a formidable combatant in his own right, but officially, it's their job to protect him.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Even the most perverted members of the group flinch at the idea of kiddie porn. The epilogue reveals that they even agreed with Shirou that he wouldn't have sex with Kusano until her eighteenth birthday, much to her consternation.
  • Fantastic Arousal: They tend to react not-so-subtly to Shirou before being winged by him.
    • Homura nearly set himself on fire.
    • Musubi and Matsu tried to jump him and had to be restrained.
    • Kazehana would start masturbating.
  • Top Wife: They squabble for this position constantly.
  • You Are Number 6: They all have numbers.
    Akitsu # 07

The Ice Sekirei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akitsu_4614.jpg
"Ah. I forgot/liked it."
A Scrapped Number, and the first (unofficial) member of Shirou's flock. Shy and doggedly obedient, she maintains a stoic demeanor at nearly all times, but has a kinkier side.

Shirou finally manages to wing her in Chapter 23 by using a tantric sex ritual.

  • Adaptational Heroism: She was a Punch-Clock Villain working for Mikogami in canon and never met Minato. Here, she's a member of Shirou's flock.
  • Animal Motif: She has a strong connection with dogs, such as wearing a dog collar from time to time, buying a dog plushy from the toy store, and following Shirou around like an overly obedient canine.
  • Ascended Extra: Not that she was a non-entity in the manga, but with how prominent she is here, Akitsu's basically the deuteragonist.
  • Berserk Button: Harm Shirou, and she will reduce you to bloody chunks.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Ah." Followed by...
    • "I forgot," whenever someone asks why she isn't wearing panties.
    • "I liked it," whenever she sees something kinky.
  • Covert Pervert: She likes watching internet porn, and sniffs Shirou's clothing when she thinks no one is looking.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Akitsu has a tendency to utterly wreck anyone who picks a fight with her, or whom Shirou orders her to attack. She easily drives off the Lightning Twins (only sparing them because Shirou told her to make them go away), and Shirou internally notes that letting her handle Toyotama and Ichiya would be the best move.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Shirou successfully wings her in Chapter 23 via tantric sex ritual.
  • Extreme Doormat: Their first night together, Akitsu was so terrified of being thrown out that she didn't eat or bathe until Shirou told her to. He was very disturbed by this.
  • Going Commando: True to canon, she tends to forget to wear undergarments. Even Yukari is embarrassed by this habit.
  • An Ice Person: Her powers are ice-based.
  • No Kill like Overkill: If you threaten Shirou's safety, Akitsu will summon a storm of ice needles, which will tear into you from every conceivable direction until you're nothing but a pile of bloody chunks.
  • The Quiet One: Akitsu doesn't talk much.
  • Sex Slave: She refers to herself as Shirou's, to his utter embarrassment.
  • The Squire: She carries Kanshou and Bakuya when Shirou isn't using them.
  • The Stoic: She's not very emotive, to say the least.
  • Their First Time: The first member of Shirou's flock to sleep with him.
  • When She Smiles: She's usually melancholic, but after Shirou wings her via sex, she starts smiling more often.
    Homura/Kagari # 06

The Flame Sekirei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/homura-kagari_9733.jpg
"So help me, Shirou, if you tell me 'legacy of a misspent youth' again I will set your hair on fire."
Shirou's first official Sekirei, and one of the few male Sekirei in existence. Homura uses the cover identity of a male escort named Kagari to keep his ear to the ground, then prowls about the city helping unhinged Sekirei find their rightful Ashikabi.

He begins to turn into a woman in Chapter 19 due to having a male Ashikabi, and the transformation is completed at the tail-end of Chapter 32.

  • Actually Pretty Funny: He cracks up when Shirou calls Tsukiumi a tsundere openly and to her face.
  • Adaptational Gender Identity: While Homura in canon continues to identify as a man even after transitioning into a female form halfway, this Homura ends up fully transitioning and after a while starts identifying as a woman.
  • Anger Born of Worry: Shirou's habit of courting danger really grates on Homura's nerves.
  • Archenemy: Hates Minaka with every fiber of his being.
  • Conveniently Common Kink:
    • Homura's unique Sekirei physiology that makes her entire body change to suit her Ashikabi also has a strong psychological component that makes it both extremely difficult for her to go against Shirou's orders, and extremely... well, rewarding for her when she doesn't try to resist them. While it would take her years to be comfortable enough for the two of them to explore the inherent Power Perversion Potential in their situation, by the time they do, Shirou already had years of experience as the caring significant other of a subservient partner thanks to Akitsu and thus uniquely suitable for her.
    • The Distant Finale also provides a polyamorous example where Homura and Akitsu would end up bonding a lot thanks to their common interest in bondage and sexual subservience to their shared Ashikabi. It gets to the point they join efforts to write a series of project proposals to build their own playroom for their BDSM sessions in the MBI Tower (including specific design features and budget estimates) until they finally managed to wear down Shirou's reluctance (and embarrassment) to the whole idea.
  • First Law of Gender Bending: Unlike the manga, this Homura makes a full transition from a man to a woman and stays that way rather than implication that he's stuck halfway.
  • Good Smoking, Evil Smoking: Homura can often be seen with a cigarette.
  • Journey to Find Oneself: Homura uses this as an excuse for Yasaka as to why "Kagari" hasn't been around the club. It's also used as a way for her to cut her own ties with the people she has met and befriended, knowing that she and Shirou will never seem him again.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Has a bad habit of being absent or asleep whenever Shirou is giving an Info Dump and not finding out until later, to his extreme annoyance.
  • Pervert Revenge Mode: Like in canon, Homura has no patience for Matsu's antics.
  • Playing with Fire: Homura is a pyromancer.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: Happens three times, to his thorough disbelief and frustration.
    • The first time comes when Shirou is discussing the identities of the Servants involved in the Fifth Grail War. Homura exasperatedly asks if Hercules was involved, and when Shirou gives a hesitant "umm" while looking around sheepishly, Homura interprets his reaction correctly and freaks out.
    • The second time comes when discussing sorceries, in which Homura asks if time-travel is one of them, with events playing out the same way.
    • The third time takes place when Shirou is preparing to heal Chiyo: Homura mockingly asks if the ritual involves the usage of virgin blood, and Matsu corrects him by saying that Shirou used some of his own blood for it.
  • Second Law of Gender-Bending: Homura does eventually come to terms with her transformation, though it does take her the years between the last chapter and the epilogue before she is truly comfortable enough to have sex with Shirou.
  • Sure, Let's Go with That: When Yukari hypothesizes that Homura was always a girl in the penultimate chapter, Homura pounces on it while simultaneously covering Shirou's mouth to keep the latter from revealing the truth.
  • Third Law of Gender-Bending: and for the trifecta, though downplayed as Homura's clothing is now cut for her more feminine figure, it still very reminiscent of her attire as a male.
    Musubi #88/Yume # 08

The Bear Sekirei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/musubi_1248.jpg
"Does porn have something to do with sex?"
Like in canon, Shirou rescues her from the Lightning Twins, and Musubi makes him her Ashikabi not long afterward. A cheerful, friendly, boisterous, but not-too-bright pugilist who firmly espouses The Power of Love despite having an Ashikabi who thinks that sometimes love just isn't enough.

Also unknowingly has the soul of Yume, a former member of the Second Generation Discipline Squad, residing within her.

  • Blood Knight: She loves fighting, or watching Shirou fight, whichever.
  • Demoted to Extra: Downplayed. She's not Shirou's primary Sekirei, but she isn't shoved completely aside, either.
  • The Ditz: She's not too smart.
  • Innocent Fanservice Girl: She's gorgeous and scantily-clad, but knows nothing about porn or seduction. With that said, she does understand what sexual intercourse is.
  • Their First Time: The second member of Shirou's flock to sleep with him. Yume ends up taking control during the romp, winging herself to Shirou in the process and giving Musubi access to her powers.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: With Tsukiumi. The Distant Finale even reveals that they eventually do everything together, including sleeping with Shirou. They even plan on trying to get pregnant at the same time.
  • Womanchild: She's about as emotionally mature as Kusano, likely as a result of the trauma of being kidnapped and experimented on by scientists outside the MBI. Shirou later on realizes that rather than stunted mental development, Musubi developed a distorted sense of values from the way Yume saved her built around the idea love is the ultimate answer to everything, which very, very closely resembles how Kiritsugu rescuing him from the Fuyuki Fire cemented his Chronic Hero Syndrome in his mind.
    Kusano # 108

The Plant Sekirei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kusano_5692.jpg
"Onii-chan has swords!"
The youngest Sekirei. An adorable little girl with a psychic control over plants.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Kuu-chan.
  • All Women Are Lustful: The epilogue shows that puberty hit her like a freight train. She's become obsessed with sex and is chomping at the bit for Shirou to fuck her.
  • Animal Motif: The kitten. She's tiny and cute, and when around people she likes, she's playful, slightly mischievous, and demanding. Part of her hair even resembles cat ears to an extent.
  • Baby See, Baby Do: She enjoys mimicking the antics of her fellow haremettes, particularly Kazehana.
  • Big Brother Worship: Cherishes the ground that Shirou walks on, and clings to him whenever he's around.
  • Character Catchphrase: "Onii-chan has swords!"
    • Upon learning that Shirou is a magus, she modifies it to "Onii-chan has magic swords!"
    • After seeing Unlimited Blade Works, she declares "Onii-Chan has all the swords!"
  • Children Are Innocent: Her reaction to Shirou revealing that he can use magic is to ask if this means he can pull a bunny out of a hat.
  • The Cutie: She's absolutely adorable, something Shirou repeatedly lampshades.
  • Jailbait Wait: No sex for her until she turns eighteen. She's been counting down the days ever since she hit puberty.
  • Nonconformist Dyed Hair: Sometime around when she hit puberty, she has dyed and maintained her hair color an electric blue (Hex #7DF9FF). This actually also falls into Color Motif as that shade of blue, according to color psychology, represents trustworthiness and reliability.
  • Puppy-Dog Eyes: No one can resist them. If tears start welling up in them, instant compliance with her expectations is the only possible outcome.
  • The Rival: She despises Yukari, with whom she competes for Shirou and Shiina's attention, and the feeling is mutual. Kuu has the advantage of being a cute little girl, meaning Yukari can't pick on her without incurring the wrath of both men.
  • She's All Grown Up: Not quite. The epilogue takes place one week before her eighteenth birthday.
  • Shipper on Deck: She at one point expresses frustration that Yukari winged Shiina, declaring that Shirou would have been a better Ashikabi. Shirou is dumbstruck by this.
    Matsu # 02

The Brain Sekirei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/matsu1_4309.jpg
"I need your DNA! Give it to me! I want your babies! Don't reject an innocent maiden such as me like that!"
A former member of the First Generation Discipline Squad, and therefore one of the oldest Sekirei, master hacker and Gadgeteer Genius, Matsu is considered by Shirou to be his most valuable Sekirei. Her extreme perverseness is Played for Laughs.
  • Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Matsu really wants Shirou to ravish her.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Homura calls her a "lascivious witch". Subverted in that she doesn't mind it.
  • Mission Control: How Shirou utilizes her talents.
  • Non-Action Girl: She's not one for physical combat, although she can hack laser satellites and use them for offense.
  • Number Two: What she basically becomes to Shirou due to her immense support abilities. Shirou notes that in the current Digital Age, she's immensely invaluable to any plans he has.
    Tsukiumi # 09

The Water Sekirei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tsukiumi_4364.jpg
"I do not know what this tsun-thing is, but from your tone it does not sound complimentary at all."
Proud, haughty, and short-tempered, Tsukiumi initially hated the idea of getting an Ashikabi and swore to kill him if they ever met face-to-face. When she finally meets Shirou in Chapter 13, he discovers that she is a Tsundere and, through guile, gets her to lower her guard. An unpleasant interruption from Higa's forces prompt her to throw her lot in with Shirou, after which she refers to herself as his "true" wife.
    Kazehana # 03

The Wind Sekirei

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kazehana_3385.jpg
"Now-now, Shirou-kun! There's nothing wrong with being an amazing lover! In fact, it's quite the opposite!"
Like Miya and Matsu, Kazehana was a member of the first Discipline Squad, and thus is one of the oldest and most experienced Sekirei. But it'd be hard to notice that, what with her constant flirting, alcohol consumption, and treating various situations like they're something out of a trashy romance novel.
  • The Alcoholic: Kazehana loves her some liquid courage.
  • Archenemy: Hates Takami for "stealing" Minaka.
  • Babies Ever After: As of the epilogue, she's the only member of Shirou's flock to have given him any children—two, actually. And she's eager for a third.
  • Big-Breast Pride: Is very proud of her bust size and loves rubbing it in the faces of "washboards" like Yukari and, later, Rin.
  • Blow You Away: Her powers are wind-based.
  • Foil: To Musubi, while both do believe in the power of love, Kazehana is experienced enough to know that it is not absolute and can cause pain as much as it does pleasure.
  • Naked Apron: Dawns one to entice Shirou. Miya is not amused.
  • The Nicknamer: She tends to dole out nicknames. Some examples:
    • Shirou - "Lover-kun"
    • Karasuba - "Crow-chan"
    • Yukari - "Washboard-chan"
    • Akitsu - "Sexy Panties-chan"
    • Tsukiumi - "Panty Flasher-chan"

Other Residents

    Miya Asama # 01
The landlady of Maison Izumo and secretly Sekirei #01. Her dead husband, Takehito, used to work at MBI.
  • Berserk Button:
    • The mere sight of Karasuba will cause her to fly into a rage, as the epilogue reveals.
    • She does not tolerate lewd behavior, and will subject anyone who breaks this taboo to her hannya mask. Same goes for violence, unless it's toward Seo.
  • Big Good: Is regarded as such by Shirou. Notably, he asks her to only get involved if he fails to kill Minaka.
  • Blatant Lies: She feigns ignorance of her hannya mask's existence, though no one is fooled. She finally drops this after Shirou figures out a way to negate it, even stomping her foot and childishly telling him to stop.
  • Cool and Unusual Punishment: Since she can't risk using her hannya mask on Shirou for fear that he'll just study it, she resorts to banning him from the kitchen whenever he angers her.
  • Demon Head: It takes the form of a hannya mask. Shirou studies it extensively, much to her annoyance, until he can replicate the technique.
  • A God Am I: Describes herself as the goddess of Sekirei. Shirou is not impressed and mocks the idea.
  • No-Sell: Kuu cannot intimidate Miya by threatening to bite her.
  • Not So Above It All: Played for Drama - when Shirou reveals exactly what the Third Magic is, Miya immediately glances at the shrine to her husband, then back at Shirou. Her ashamed expression makes it clear that she would've used the Grail to resurrect him given the chance.
  • Rhetorical Question Blunder: She sarcastically guesses that Shirou's powers come from magic, and is caught completely off-guard when he confirms that this is, indeed, the case.
  • Scars Are Forever: She gets a nasty one from a magus assassin, and Shirou doesn't remove it completely just to teach her a little humility.
  • Troll: She treats Seo with calm contempt, and takes a customarily sadistic delight in seeing him suffer.
    Uzume # 11

The Veiled Sekirei

"What's up? Gonna profess your love to me and try to get me and my Ashikabi to join your harem?"
A resident of Maison Izumo with a hospitalized Ashikabi.
  • Adaptational Name Change: Well, number change. Uzume was Sekirei #10 in the manga, but she's #11 here.
  • Ambiguously Bi: While she and Chiyo are together and are loving Ashikabi-Sekirei pair, she also supports Chiyo's crush on Shirou saying she wouldn't mind being with the two of them.
  • Berserk Button: She refers to Higa's Sekirei as "bitches", and the one time we see her interact with any of them, she gets uncharacteristically vicious.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: She rescues her Ashikabi from Higa's clutches, Shirou cures the girl of her illness, and they survive the Sekirei Plan together.
  • Spared By Adaptation: She doesn't get terminated here.
  • Tomboy: Despite her curvy figure, she tends to act like a boy. Shirou notes that, were she a normal human, she'd have probably spent her childhood playing soccer rather than with dolls.
