Kajika Louisa Kugami Burnsworth
Our protagonist. Kajika was raised from two years old on a remote Caribbean island with only the company of Mustafa, her snow leopard, maids and Lee-Leng to keep her company. Now at age 14, her father, the powerful Harry Burnsworth, lets her go to a Japanese school to meet people her own age.
Now she is tasked with choosing a husband from three candidates her father has chosen. The only problem is, her father won't tell her who these candidates are.
- All-Loving Hero: All Loving Heroine: She wants be be friends with everyone.
- The Beautiful Elite
- Berserk Button: She's normally fairly easygoing (though stubborn) and eager to get along with everyone. But threaten her loved ones, and she'll get seriously angry. (Though she normally cools off pretty quickly.)
- Birds of a Feather: With Rumaty. Both were raised isolated from the outside world, are stubborn, and are cousins.
- Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The Gentle Girl to Lee-Leng's Brooding Boy.
- Brutal Honesty: She isn't afraid to say what's on her mind.
- Calling the Old Man Out: Well slapping him, anyway.
- Childhood Marriage Promise: A teen marriage promise, really. She and Rumaty agree to marry if they fall in love with each other or neither of them finds someone else first.
- The Comically Serious: Sometimes.
- Determinator: She will become your friend.
- Dude Magnet: She's got four guys who are in love with her. And she's only 14.
- First Kiss: With Rumaty.
- First Love: Mustafa. It takes her a while to realize the difference between romantic and familial love.
- Fish out of Water: She grew up on a remote island for twelve years and is now expected to be in high society. She doesn't understand certain social expectations.
- Foil: With Najayra.
- I Didn't Mean to Turn You On: poor Rumaty. She just doesn't realize that his feelings are love, not friendship.
- Inexplicably Identical Individuals: With Rumaty. They have different eye, skin, hair colors, and genders, but their facial and eye shapes are the same. This foreshadows the two being cousins.
- Innocent Innuendo: "You can touch me anytime." Oh, Kajika. Of course, she said this to Rumaty, so he doesn't pick up on it either.
- Kissing Cousins: With Rumaty.
- Lethal Chef: Big time. Just the mention of her "Special Stamina Soup" is enough to bring a reaction of The Dreaded from other characters. The only one who can stomach her cooking is Eugene.
- Light Feminine and Dark Feminine: The Light to Najayra's Dark.
- Like Brother and Sister: With Lee-Leng, at first.
- Lonely Rich Kid: And how! She lived alone on an island with only maids, Lee-Leng and Mustafa for about twelve years. Starting when she was two!
- Missing Mom: She died protecting her from kidnappers when she was two.
- New Transfer Student: At the beginning of the series.
- Oblivious to Love: Mostly due to living on an island for most of her life. It took her 12 years to figure out Lee-Leng had feelings for her.
- She continues to insist that Rumaty and she are Just Friends, despite him proposing to her. It isn't until their First Kiss, that she figures it out.
- Official Couple: With Lee-Leng.
- Parental Abandonment: Her mother died when she was two and her father sent her to live on a remote island for her protection.
- Royal Blood: It turns out she is King Machaty's granddaughter.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: She isn't that tomboyish, but compared to Yui...
- What Beautiful Eyes!: Yui certainly thinks so.
- Wise Beyond Her Years: Zig-zagged. She can give great life advice, but she doesn't understand the social ramifications of, say, sleeping in the same bed as a prince. Or what different types of love are.
Huang Lee-Leng
Kajika's friend who would often visit her on Giviolle and gave her Mustafa. He is tasked with protecting Kajika while she looks for a husband, despite being in love with her.
- Arranged Marriage: To his cousin Ling-Lee.
- Badass Bookworm: While he's well-studied and normally operates in business and politics, he's also trained in martial arts and very handy with a knife.
- The Beautiful Elite
- Berserk Button: Do not hurt Kajika.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Do not get him angry. Just... don't.
- Big Brother Mentor: Acts as one for Kajika and later Rumaty.
- Broken Ace: He's the leader of the Huang family, a skilled strategist in both business and politics, skilled in martial arts, and generally more mature than a good portion of the cast. Underneath it all, he's been suppressing all emotional weakness to the point that he seemed like an Empty Shell when Kajika first met him, and desperately trying to hide how much he struggles with his Skewed Priorities.
- Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: The Brooding Boy to Kajika's Gentle Girl.
- The Chessmaster: When it comes to business and politics.
- Dull Eyes of Unhappiness: Along with being a Stepford Smiler perpetually has these. Kajika even makes a note of it the first time she sees him.
- Emotion Suppression: This becomes a major issue later on.
- Enemy Mine: Not a severe case, but a minor version is invoked with him and Eugene. They openly admit their mutual dislike for each other and have almost explicitly stated that they work together only because of their love for Kajika and for the sake of her protection.
- Like Brother and Sister: With Kajika, at first.
- Missing Mom: She died in a sanatorium when he was five.
- Official Couple: With Kajika.
- Skewed Priorities: Played for Drama. He's had it drilled into him from birth to prioritize the Huang family above all else, and is now completely incapable of putting anything he cares about before the family, including his feelings for Kajika.
- Overcoming this is a large part of his Character Development at the end of the series, eventually leading him to step down from the position of head of the Huang family. Things go downhill from there, though.
- Stepford Smiler: Completed with Dull Eyes of Unhappiness.
- Sugar-and-Ice Personality: He is cooly polite and distant to most people, but he can be quite kind and warm to thoses he cares about.
- The Stoic: Or so it seems.
- Victorious Childhood Friend
Rumaty Ivan di Raginei
A prince of Raginei and second in line for the throne. Rumaty first appears at Lee-Leng's uncle's house in the greenhouse. He saves Kajika from a man trying to take advantage of her. They bond when they escape the mansion and are nearly killed in a assassination attempt. From their they quickly become friends, something Rumaty never experienced growing up. He and Kajika are noted to look alike by multiple characters. He is exiled by his paranoid brother and spends a year in the Burnsworth mansion with Kajika. Rumaty eventually ascends to the throne after realizing that his brother is a horrible king.
- The Beautiful Elite
- Big Brother Worship: He really respects and looks up to his elder brother Somand, and wants to do everything he can to support Somand as king. This becomes tragic, as Somand doesn't understand his feelings at all, and is terrified that he'll try to usurp the throne. Eventually, he tries to have him killed.
- Birds of a Feather: With Kajika. They're both straightforward, headstrong, and the children of very powerful people. They also tend to inspire loyalty in others.
- Cain and Abel: The Able to Somand's Cain. Tragically, he really does love his brother, but Somand is incredibly paranoid.
- Childhood Marriage Promise: See Kajika's entry
- Determinator: He is relentless in his attempts to get to Raginei, until Lee Leng is shot.
- First Kiss: With Kajika.
- Fish out of Water: When seeing the real world for the first time, having been very sheltered as a prince of Raginei.
- Forceful Kiss: To Kajika. He does ask first... he just doesn't wait for a reply.
- The Good King: After Somand's death, Rumaty is crowned king and presumably brings prosperity back to Raginei.
- Hair-Trigger Temper: Especially early on in the series.
- Heroic BSoD: When he realizes that his brother tried to kill him.
- Honor Before Reason: Early on in the series. He grows out of it somewhat.
- Inexplicably Identical Individuals: While differences in hair, eyes, and gender make them easy to tell apart, he Kajika have very similar faces, which is often commented on. Isaac even mistakes Kajika for him once, when he was half passed-out from being shot, and Lee-Leng begins subconsciously treating him similarly to how he treats Kajika because of this. This is hardly surprising, as they're actually first cousins.
- Kissing Cousins: With Kajika. They were not aware of this.
- Luminescent Blush: After developing feelings for Kajika, this happens when they have moments.
- Missing Mom: She passed away not long after he was born.
- Rebel Prince: Prior to Character Development.
- Romantic False Lead: At first it seems like he and Kajika might actually get together (due to Lee Leng not being a candidate and them getting the most relationship development).
- Romantic Runner-Up: He was the most likely to marry Kajika. Unfortunately for him, Lee Leng existed.
- Ruling Couple: He wants to be this with Kajika.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: With Somand.
- Uncanny Family Resemblance: He looks just like his grandfather Machaty.
- The Wise Prince: Post Character Development
Eugene De Volkan
Eugene is the ultimate Casanova. Women (And Men!) fall for him as soon as they see his face. He is just that pretty. But this beauty hides a sad man just waiting to die.Due to his silver hair and green eyes, Kajika believes that Mustafa's spirit resides within him.
- The Beautiful Elite
- The Casanova
- Deadpan Snarker
- Death Seeker: Prior to meeting Kajika.
- Driven to Suicide: Three women have committed suicide over him. His mother committed suicide at 20 and he attempts to follow suit. Kajika stops him, thankfully.
- Enemy Mine: Teams up with Lee Leng when Kajika is in danger.
- Even the Guys Want Him: Yui's brother after helping him put on a yukata.
- The Gadfly: He tends to bug people just because he can.
- I Just Want My Beloved to Be Happy: This is how his feelings for Kajika eventually turn out. He explicitly states that he'll never attempt to lay a hand on her, and that he'll support her with whoever she decides to marry in the end. That being said, he still finds it quite painful, even more than he thought it would be, when she finally gets together with Lee-Leng.
- Lady Killer In Love: For Kajika. Sadly, this takes a whole new meaning considering all of the women who have been Driven to Suicide over him.
- Missing Mom: She committed suicide on her 20th birthday.
- The Rival: To Lee-Leng. Lampshaded by Toranosuke. Multiple times. He does't seem to mind Rumaty or Carl, though.
Carl Rosenthal
The son of Harry Burnsworth's enemy, who none the less gets along very well with Kajika. He has a fear of women stemming from the bullying his sisters subject him to.
- The Beautiful Elite
- Claustrophobia: Courtesy of his sisters.
- Does Not Like Women: Do to being bullied by his older sisters. The only exception is Kajika.
- Heroic BSoD: When his father has a heart attack and is dying, and he realizes that he's not sad at all, fearing that his sister's accusations of a Lack of Empathy are true after all. He gets over it when his father gets better and he feels happy about it.
- I Am Not My Father: A large part of his early Character Development is realizing that he is not his father, and that he doesn't have to try to follow in his footsteps, fanatically pursuing revenge on the Burnsworths, just to make him happy.
- Missing Mom: Sge divorced his father soon after he was born, and he doesn't seem to ever see her.
- Son of a Whore: His mother was a hostess who married his father (who was 30 years her senior) because of his vast wealth. They divorced after only a year, though.
- Youngest Child Wins: He is much more talented than his older sisters, who are in general fairly stupid and useless in business matters, as well the one set to inherit the Rosenthal company. He's also far more trusted by their father than they are. This is part of why they hate him so much.
