Go To

     Emerl
An ancient robot called a Gizoid (real name Prefect Typhos) that can learn to copy the traits and skills of others; Emerl is a unique model that can also absorb Chaos energies. Said to have wiped out the civilization that made him. However, he picks up better traits by hanging out with Sonic and his friends.
  • Adaptational Alternate Ending: In Sonic Battle, Emerl is destroyed and brought Back from the Dead as Gemerl, and while Gemerl's living happily with Cream and her mother, he doesn't remembered his previous life as Emerl. In Freedom Fighters NEO, Emerl is subjected to a Fate Worse than Death, but he gets his happy ending after his heart is unchained from Robotnik's control thank to Emerl's Lingering Will, and lives happily with Sonic and Sally, having all memories of his tine with them.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: Downplayed. While still the sweet Reploid that he is in the game, he is downright mean to Larxene and Marluxia. Justified since what the two wre doing is not what Strelitzia wanted.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: He was made more tragic by having his impact on Sonic and co. amplified, and him being depicted as an All-Loving Hero. However, if you look at Adaptational Jerkass above, Even the Loving Hero Has Hated Ones.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Played with. He grows out of it, quite literally. And then gets forced back into this state thanks to Robotnik. And then he defies this by using The Power of Hate to create his Lingering Will a la Terra.
  • All-Loving Hero: He spreads kindness and joy everywhere he goes.
  • And I Must Scream: His corruption as Gemerl.
  • Animated Armor: His Lingering Will is this.
  • Anti Anti Christ: To a degree. He was the most powerful of many robots with the power to level an entire civilization. Emerl, thanks to the bond he created with Sonic and co., goes on to help save the world. Ultimately played straight due to him being prophesized to be the Golden Master.
  • Badass Adorable: He's a robotic Person of Mass Destruction who can defeat even the toughest enemy and has the power to level entire civilizations and possibly entire worlds, but his Innocent Blue Eyes and kind-hearted nature make him so endearing, and his Fate Worse than Death all the more tragic.
  • Badass Automaton: He is the most powerful Gizoid created by the Nocturnus Clan and likely the most powerful sentient machine ever created in the Sonic universe. Professor Gerald theorized that he'd able to destroy the earth single-handedly. He nearly did due to Robotnik corrupting him with the Final Egg Blaster while charged with all seven Chaos Emeralds.
  • Berserk Button: Practically any dishonoring to a friendship, including, but not limite to: hurting one of his friends, doing something someone dear and close to you doesn't want.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: If you hurt one of his friends or if he tries to point out you did something wrong and push your luck, you're signing your death sentence.
  • The Dreaded: To the Serpentine, dur to his destiny to become the Golden Master.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: See Adaptational Alternate Ending above.
  • The Empath: He's able to figure out someone's true emotions even if that person suffers of amnesia or brainwashing. This ends up being a thorn on Marluxia's side.
  • Expy: This depiction of Emerl is more or less one towards Ventus: both of them are adorable badasses with Innocent Blue Eyes, and they have the same "My friends are my power" mentality (although Emerl's is a little different: to Emerl, there's no power greater than The Power of Friendship). They both are seen by the Big Bad as a key to The End of the World as We Know It: Ventus clashing with Vanitas can create the X-Blade, and Emerl is a Person of Mass Destruction.
  • Fighting from the Inside: Emerl's heart was fighting against Robotnik's Link with Gemerl. It's implies that the real Emerl is Prefect Typhos's heart.
  • Final Boss: He's this to the Sonic Battle arc as Gemerl. Crazily enough, it's Emerl's Lingering Will that fights Gemerl.
  • Fire-Forged Friends: With Julie-Su: Julie hates Emerl simply for being created by the Nocturnus Clan, which is a rival to the Dark Legion.
  • Flight: He can fly by copying Tails, Cream or Gamma's capabilities.
  • Foreshadowing: His quote upon being found by Sonic hints on his true nature as a weapon of mass destruction.
  • From a Certain Point of View: The Nocturnus appear to have been drawn into the Twilight Cage when they got too powerful, thanks in no small part to their Gizoid armies — and Emerl was the pinnacle of that technology, so he did lead to their downfall according to Professor Gerald's research.
  • Genre Savvy: He figure out that, since Sonic is a Freedom Fighter and Sally is a princess, they are raising him to be a warrior prince. At Sonic and Sally's wedding, he dons a princiar outfit (not so different from the one Elias wears) and a Badass Cape. He's almost always seen like this afterwards.
  • Good Counterpart:
    • To Robotnik's Metallixes in a sense, as both are robots who can copy the powers of others.
    • To the Overlord. Both are extremely powerful being that both rose to be the Golden Master. However, while the prophecy state that the Golden Master is a conquerer of all, Emerl wants none of it, while the Overlord stole Lloyd's power to plunge Ninjago into darkness.
  • Grow Beyond Their Programming: Zigzagged, in that he was programmed to do exactly that in order to override his Gizoid directives. If he didn't have a heart before, he definitely grew one.
  • Heroic Vow: "Mom, Dad... One day, I will set this right."
  • I Am a Monster: He went through this for a while after putting two and two together and realizing he's meant to become the Golden Master. He snaps out of it after realizing no power is greater than his own emotions.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Has blue eyes and is quite innocent to the ways of the world.
  • Lightning Bruiser
  • Like a Son to Me: Originally inverted: he calls Sally "Mom", and, during Sally's chapter, starts calling Sonic "Dad". He also briefly called Amy "Mama Amy" before he figured out her selfishness.
  • Loophole Abuse: Prefect Typhos is supposed to obey the one with the most power. However, Typhos, as Emerl, realizez that there's no greater power than emotions, namely, The Power of Friendship, The Power of Love and The Power of Hate (the first allowed him to turn the Golden Master into an Anti Anti Christ, the second freed his heart from Robotnik's darkness and the third allowed the creation of his Lingering Will.)
  • Lost Technology: Emerl is all that exists of the long-lost Nocturne Clan's technology from 4000 years ago. He's still impressive cutting edge, even compared to most Reploids and many robot from multiple worlds and realms, such as San Fransokio and Ninjago.
  • Nice Guy: He learns to be this from Sonic and friends, and very much so. It helps that he's heavily implied to have grown a heart, due to Gerald Robotnik's interference and the days living together with Sonic and the gang.
  • No Man Should Have This Power: Given how the Twilight Cage seems to exist to imprison the most dangerous races and just how powerful Emerl is, it's implied the creation of Emerl was the last straw. It's likely possible why he was left behind in the first place.
  • No Mouth: Even with many Reploids having mouths, Emerl does not. It helps that he's not the only robot that laks a mouth: Metallixes and E-Series don't have mouths either.
  • Override Command: After Typhos went out of control in the ARK and was sealed away, Professor Gerald, who couldn't find a way to destroy his core, installed a free-willed emotions-based AI program into him should Typhos ever awaken and act this way again. The phrase to activate it was "Bring hope to humanity", after Maria's last words. However, as Dr. Koopa realizes with his analysis, Sonic and co. destroyed the core program for Gerald, as, if Typhos would grow a heart, that heart would destroy the destructive company (quite literally).
  • Person of Mass Destruction: The Nocturnus Clan designed him to be their most powerful robot in their military, with the power to level entire civilizations and as theorized by Gerald Robotnik, possibly destroy the very world itself if possessing enough power (such as through the Chaos Emeralds.)
  • Power Copying: His main superpower is basically copying the powers and weapons of his enemies. He can also augment said powers, weapons and capabilities with his frightening amounts of power.
  • Punny Name: It's a variation on "Emerald", which was originally one of the few things he took interest in.
  • Robot Buddy: To all of the Freedom Fighters and the Chaotix.
  • Ship Tease: With Cream.
  • Shout-Out: His real name, Prefect Typhos, is this to The SEGA Scourge.
  • Spanner in the Works: Strelitzia and the Highest Resistance think Emerl is the biggest example in the universe that will make the Dark Prognosticus meaningless.
    • Emerl (in his Animated Armor form) ends up being the biggest Spanner in the Works against Marluxia. Emerl's decision to act as a safeguard for Sora's memories of Kairi meant that, if Sora found Kairi, all of Namine's brainwashing will be for nothing, so Marluxia abused Namine into brainwashing Kairi as well. That, however, meant nothing as well, because of Emerl's power as The Empath, which not only restored Sora and Kairi's memories of each other (but they still have to go through a one-year slumber, because Vexen already used Sora's memories to create Xion, meaning that all of Sora's combat experience was into Xion), but also managed to break Larxene and even Marluxia himself simply by mentioning Strelitzia.
  • Third Eye: When he awakens as Gemerl, the eye on his forehead opens.
  • Turn the Other Cheek: After beating Robotnik, he tells him that he's grateful to him for waking him up. Which makes it all the more tragic when Robotnik turns him into Gemerl.
  • Ultimate Life Form: While there may have been other models and varieties of Gizoids, Emerl was stated to be the most powerful of his kind.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifter: Downplayed; he can changes his colors at will. In the Mecha Sonic Saga, he settles for an outfit that makes him look like a prince. Played straight when he transform into the Guard Armor Heartless: he doesn't transform into it because it's his Heartless, but because The Merger Magikoopa believes it's cool.
  • The Worf Effect: Being so overpowered, Emerl often falls victim to this.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Even when stuck as an Animated Armor, Emerl still had access to all of his powers. The only ability he lost was the ability to learn any new ability.
    Strelitzia
A Keyblade wielder that was murdered during the first Keyblade War, but found refugee in Emerl.
Cream Lightfoot and Cheese the Chao
Cream Lightfoot is the daughter of Johnny Lightfoot and Vanilla the Rabbit. She's often recognized by having her pet Chao, Cheese, around her wherever she goes.
    E- 117 Sigma
The 18th member of the E-100 Series. Unlike his 23 brothers, Sigma can't delete the Master Registration Program, as he is a virus within a mechanical body.
     E- 121 Chi
Mass-produced copies of Emerl, given the designation of the 22nd membre of the E-100 Series. They're led by E-117 Sigma.
