SF Alpha
Ane Conel
The main protagonist of the series, Ane is a lovable young Chomper who also serves as the bold leader of the elite task force known as SF Alpha. While he has his personal matters in check, he's still haunted by the psychological profile of his species, which is largely dependent on primal instinct, and the ugly truth of how it got him where he is now...
- Absurdly Youthful Father: Is 20 by the time the story comes to a close, after which it's revealed he inadvertently fathered a child with Sarah. And then they have another.
- Abusive Parents: Though Ane was never actually abused as a child, since his is of the Affably Evil type, to a point, it is heavily implied Ane's father would've done this if Ane hadn't escaped.
- Afraid of Blood: Lynnith cutting herself triggers a PTSD-induced flashback to his Harmful to Minors origin story.
- The Berserker: Ane will unwillingly lapse into this state, which is the closest thing to a Superpowered Evil Side, if his stress levels soar too high. This is the case for all other Chompers, and in the case of the Conels, has a habit of being the weapon of choice for Mentor Occupational Hazard... on their own mentors.
- Dark and Troubled Past: Was a sweet innocent boy who lived back when the war really was just a game to his bretheren... then his father lost control, ate the human they lived with, and lost it from there. Ane's only choice was to escape or live with a clinically insane man for the rest of his life, and he ran all the way to Crazy Dave's mansion from the first game. Then the war went military.
- The Determinator: In regards to his preoccupation with setting things right and keeping the peace. Seriously, he's tough - it takes some serious grit to break off a relationship with a parent you know is now going to be nothing but trouble for the rest of your life. And when Sarah forcefully abandons him, he simply starts walking back after calming down, and finds Peater along the way!
- Good Counterpart: The heroic and responsible version of the Sativums. Unfortunately, it's implied that he's just the beginning, and neither of his children seem ready to carry on the heroic lineage at first.
- Honor-Related Abuse: While he's never shown on the receiving end of it, it's heavily implied that his less-than-trustworthy father would've done this had he been given the chance.
- The Leader
- Made of Iron: Died once, came back, nearly exsanguinated himself on the premises, spent ten months in a coma, and came out just fine. Make of that what you will.
- Self-Made Orphan: Kills his father in a stress-induced trance after an operation Gone Horribly Wrong. He had it coming.
- Superpowered Evil Side: A trait Ane shares with all Chompers. His stress-induced trances let him go all out on the enemy but run the risk of unwanted collateral damages. It can also potentially lead to a Heroic RRoD depending on the situation.
Sarah Caryophylalles
A Cactus who serves as Ane's right-hand-woman and is also his love interest. While feisty in the past, she's had to settle down just to keep up with Ane's mood swings.
- Absurdly Youthful Mother: While toeing the boundaries a bit, she's only 20 when she gives birth to Annika.
- Everyone Has Standards: Although SF Alpha's members have been through and done tough shit, she initially can not bring herself to live with the fact that her boyfriend now has patricide written all over him. Out of impulse, this drives her to slap Ane after he runs to her for helpnote , use up their only way home (shoving Hershel and Mystic through in the process), and threatens to kill him if he comes back. Of course, this leads to a bout of some of the worst emotional trauma she'd ever experienced.
- Friendly Sniper
- Get a Hold of Yourself, Man!: Slaps Ane after he kills his father on accident in a battle gone wrong. Unfortunately, it's pretty clear that the act's clearly standing in for a more physically abusive optionnote and it doesn't change him at all, effectively subverting this.
- The Lancer
- Love Hurts: Non-lethal example. Being in love with your superior officer doesn't do well when he's the perpetrator of an Accidental Murder caused by taking a fight too far, and your instincts tell you to abandon him.
