    The Bay Area expedition

The Ark Hunter (Player Character)

One of many ark hunters hired by Von Bach Industries and implanted with an E.G.O implant.

  • Ascended Extra: There was a contest in which whoever the top ten players had a chance to be voted on as a character for the second season of the show.
  • Blood Knight: The lunatic voice set takes wicked glee in critical kills and long kill chains.
  • Cyborg: They're host to an EGO (Environmental Guardian Online), a symbiotic artificial intelligence created to aid soldiers in combat.
  • Everyone Calls Him "Barkeep": Or, rather, Ark Hunter.
  • Multiple-Choice Past: The Ark Hunter has one of four possible origins; Veteran of the Pale Wars, Survivalist, Outlaw and Mechanist.
  • One-Man Army: Thanks to their EGO.
  • Supporting Protagonist: The people around the Ark Hunter advance the story while they only participate in it by helping them realize their goals.
  • The Voiceless: It's noted that they're not very talkative, at least during cutscenes. In combat, however, they comment on things like critical kills, and big kill chains, as well as saying hello to their summoned vehicle.

Karl von Bach

CEO of Von Bach Industries, and the Ark Hunter's employer. He's searching for the missing pieces of an Ark Reactor which will allow him to generate infinite energy and in turn make him the "savior of humanity".

Voiced By: Todd Haberkorn

  • Amazon Chaser: He's rather turned on by Cass.
    • Too Kinky to Torture: A minor case, he finds Cass's anger sexy, and wouldn't mind getting punched in the face by her.
  • Benevolent Boss: He's actually rather respectful toward the Player Character for the most part, especially compared to everyone else. This may just be pragmatic considering how much he's invested in your mission, but the other people is disrespectful to in-game are not employees of his.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: He's taken over by the LOCI A.I after the events of the main campaign but is freed at the end of Season 2.
  • The Cameo: Not in person, but his EGO devices become an important plot device in Season 2 of the show.
  • Dirty Coward: After being freed from the LOCI A.I, he, the Ark Hunter and Cass go to confront the leader of the cult formed around the A.I. However, he tricks Cass into leaving the Ark Hunter to fight against the leader alone by trapping them with the leader, with him saying that he was just "playing hero" to get the Ark Hunter to fight the leader and only "saved" her because he finds her attractive.
  • Disney Death: Thrown off the Golden Gate Bridge by Nim Shondu.
  • He's Back!: He returns in the final episode of the Season 2 missions.
  • Insufferable Genius: He takes every opportunity to let everyone he meets know how brilliant he is.
    • Jerkass: Seriously. Every line of his is this, to the point that he's ALMOST Token Evil Teammate.
    • It's All About Me: Not only does he like to boast about his brilliance, he also boasts that with his Ark core he'll be the greatest hero the Earth has ever seen.
  • Irony: Almost gets blown up by one of his own company's mines. From the look on his face, he seems to realize it.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: He's known as "Death's Merchant" for creating many of the most deadly weapons used during the Pale Wars.
  • Not Quite Dead: After Nim's defeat, Von Bach (or maybe just his body) is shown waking up on a beach.

Captain Noah Grant

Commander of the E-REP forces in the bay area. Overwhelmed by the hostile factions of California and keeping his soldiers' lives, he reclutanly assist Von Bach and the Ark Hunters.

  • A Father to His Men: Cares deeply for all the men under his command. His own son included.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: A genuinely nice guy who gives you missions, despite the fact that the E-Rep is kinda evil (well, Morally Ambiguous, anyways.)
    • He's also a far cry from the E-Rep higher-ups we see in the series, insisting on putting The Men First and gradually warming up to the Ark Hunter. Of course, this is also because he refused to be put behind a desk and remained a field officer as well.

    Residents of Paradise

Cass Ducar

An Irathient ark hunter investigating the EMC ruins in the bay area. She teams up with the Ark Hunter in their search for the Ark Reactor parts.

  • Demoted to Extra: She's a major supporting character during the first two regions (Mount Tam and Madera) but her presence is heavily reduced during the Marin and Sausalito regions but does have more importance during the San Francisco region.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Wears a fairly revealing outfit, and is pretty beautiful by Votan and human standards. to the point she's weaponized it a few times, and/or beat the hell out of guys trying to hit on her.
  • Mysterious Past: One of the loading screens notes this about her.
  • Noodle Incident: With Jon Cooper. "At least you're sober, and wearing all your clothes this time."
  • Not in This for Your Revolution: She doesn't care about anything but getting paid. Or so she says.
    • Shows this is really a lie by the time the mission to take down Nim rolls around, as she's found she actually likes Paradise and most of its people. Not that this stops her from snarking a lot about the lack of payment.
  • The Alcoholic: The woman loves the hell out of her booze. And it's implied Cooper's had to pull her out of at LEAST one bar fight since she showed up in the area, if not several (even calling him to let him know she's about to start one in the epilogue cutscene).

Camden Pace

Founder of the Defiant Few as a local faction and a friend of Rosa's.

  • Badass Normal: Pretty much par for the course, as she's a survivor of the Battle of Fort Defiance like Torc, Cooper, Nolan and Rosa.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Remember the Terrasphere bomb (known in-universe as a Burkus Rig) from the first episode of the show? She disarms one a terrorist attempts to set off. Note this usually takes an Indogene experienced with ArkTech to do, not a regular human.
  • The Faceless: Never met in person during her introduction in Season 2, or ever thereafter.

Jon Cooper

The local lawkeeper, a member of the Defiant Few. He joins the Ark Hunter to make sure the Ark Reactor parts don't fall in the wrong hands.

  • The Atoner: He only took the lawkeeper job because he felt it was the only way he could atone for activating the terra-spire at the Battle of Defiance.
  • Cowboy Cop: He's a good person but will not hesitate to kill a bandit.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Does this a lot, mostly to do Von Bach, and occasionally to Torc, who he's Vitriolic Best Buds with.
Cooper: "Well, this sure is a good Goddamn time! I missed having my teeth rattled by close impacting artillery shells!"
Torc: "I was usually the one doing the shelling, so I don't know what you mean, Coop!"
Cooper: "I know! That's what makes you an asshole!"
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Fought to protect innocent civilians during the Battle of Defiance.
  • Mercy Kill: Does this to a mortally wounded miner per his request.
  • Tranquil Fury: Has his moments, like immediately after said Mercy Kill, as he proceeds to gun down every Raider at the mine along side the Ark Hunter to a man.

Varus Soleptor

Liberata CEO of Soleptor Enterprises. He takes advantage of the Ark Hunter's search of the Ark Reactor parts to take control of bandit-occuppied mines and to advance his interests.

  • The Cameo: He appears in S2E1, coming down to LA upon hearing that Nolan has shown his face on the west coast again. At which point Nolan headbutts him and then punches his lights out (Something players wanted to do for YEARS) after Irisa puts knives in several of his mercs and gives him the opening to do so.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: He made a lot of his money by buying "useless" land (that he had scanned for minerals in secret) at a pittance, and mining the resources that he "discovered" there.
  • Dirty Coward: Loves to brag about scamming people, wets himself when he's in actual danger. Which is probably why there's always at minimum six heavily armed and armored Echelon Mercs around him. Not that that usually stops whoever happens to be pissed at him at the time (Ara, Cooper, you).
  • Karma Houdini: He's responsible for the raiders invading Paradise but never pays for his actions outside of being forced to assist in the fight against Dark Matter.
    • Also pretty much the entire reason the 99ers exist, given he essentially ruined Clive Towers, and forced him and the miners who stood to need to rely even more heavily on cybernetics.
  • Only in It for the Money: Tends to take whatever route will make him richer, whether it's "outsourcing" dangerous jobs to the player or trying to sell the Ark Core to the highest bidder.
  • Miles Gloriosus: After the ark hunters kill the boss of Soleptor Excavation.
"What a day, huh? Secured my box and I killed a monster!"
    • Does the same when Jackleg Joe is killed, despite you and Rosa doing all the work.
  • Big "SHUT UP!": Ara hands him a well deserved and massive one during the San Fransisco questline which shuts him up... for about five seconds. Of course, this also leads to Ara nearly strangling the little bastard.

Torc Mok

A Sensoth engineer, another member of the Defiant Few. Currently retired to protect a community in Sausalito. However, he joins the Ark Hunter after being told of the Ark Reactor parts, knowing well of their potential for destruction.

  • The Atoner: After the Battle of Defiance he tried to become a pacifist. See Retired Badass.
  • The Big Guy: He is a Sensoth, after all.
  • Gadgeteer Genius: Not to the point Rosa is, but the guy knows his ordnance. Something Dark Matter and the Raiders learn quite painfully when attempting to raid his garage. Of course, you'd think they would have had a clue when there's a pair of TANKS parked on his driveway. And a cruise missile silo. And the land mines covering his front yard.
Cooper: (Upon seeing both) Von Bach owes you an apology for calling this place a shithole.
    Torc: He sure does.
  • I Call It "Vera": His missile launcher is named, ROXI.
    • He's also extremely protective of her, as he bluntly tells Cooper after the former says he would have asked to borrow her if Torc hadn't been willing to help that he'd have a better chance of beating a Volge in a fist fight.
  • Neck Lift: Does this epically to Von Bach after the latter bitches one time too many. With one hand. While carrying ROXI in the other.
  • Past Experience Nightmare: His data-recorders reveal he has recurring nightmares about the Battle of Defiance.
  • Retired Badass: He wanted to be one anyway. The raiders had other ideas. They died for it.
    • Comes out of retirement without question once he knows Dark Matter is back.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Fought to protect innocent civilians during the Battle of Defiance.

Ara Shondu

Castithan ambassador for the Votanis Collective. She reclutantly assist the Ark Hunter in their search of the Ark Reactor parts. She's also Nim Shondu's sister.

  • Category Traitor: She believes in peaceful coexistence between Humans and Votans; her predecessor insulted her for it and her brother wants to kill her for it.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Her main motivation is helping the people of the Bay Area.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: A few data recorders show that she was like this when she was younger. She still works toward her ideals, but has a more pragmatic outlook when you meet her. Given the hell you find out Tranquility (the community she was raised in) actually was, this is understandable.

Rosa Rodriguez

The daughter of one of the Defiant Few and current CEO of TopNotch Toolworks. A skilled mechanic and engineer in her own right.

  • Ambiguously Gay: In the vanilla game is implied that her relationship with Eren Niden is more than a friendship. It was all-but-confirmed that they are a couple in the post-release missions.
  • Anger Born of Worry: When Eren goes away and gets herself captured by raiders.
  • Berserk Button: She doesn't like being underestimated or people doubting her abilities as an engineer.
    • And God help you if you threaten Eren.
  • Honest Corporate Executive: Unlike most of the post-Pale Wars corporations, she uses hers for altruistic purposes with most of her's Faction's contracts revolt around helping people under assault.
  • Gratuitous Spanish: She sometime uses (mostly badly translated) spanish words when angry or excited.
    • Though in the context she says it, "Chivo" might be her calling Karl Von Bach a "Pussy" as it's the Castithan word for.. well.. you know.

L.O.C.I

An AI that's believed to be the basis of all E.G.O implants. It takes over Karl Von Bach's body in The Stinger of the main campaign and it's the main antagonist of the last episode of Season 2.
  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: An insane AI that wants to force both Humans and Votans to live under a Hive Mind.
  • Cult of Personality: It uses Karl's body to form a cult based around everybody living under a Hive Mind by having prospects implanted with hacked-E.G.O implants and putting them under its control.
  • Hazy-Feel Turn: After it's defeated at the end of Season 2, it hacks into the Ark Hunter's E.G.O implant and guides them to Alcatraz island where there's a refugee camp, telling the Ark Hunter that they can still help "their people" by doing expeditions into the many hostile factions' underground bases/hideouts/hives. However, there's a bitterness in it's tone.

    Factions

The Earth Republic

The nation-state formed out of the ruins of the Earth Military Coalition. Currently covering most of northeastern United States with its capital being New York City.

They sent a Von Bach-sponsored expedition to the ruins of San Francisco in search of Ark technology and to establish a foothold in the region.

  • Adaptational Heroism: In the TV show, they are an expansionist People's Republic of Tyranny. Here, they are The Federation.
  • Dropped A Bridge On Them: In the Expeditions update, it's stated by L.O.C.I that the Earth Republic has been decimated — an event that happens in the TV Show's third season.
  • Eagleland: They view themselves as the successor of the United States.
  • Hegemonic Empire: They tend to "convince" towns and communities to join them and it's one of the biggest reasons why people not under them are wary of them.
  • Rising Empire: They control what was northeastern United States and some parts of South America with them adding more towns and communities into their fold every year and the expedition also serves to expand their control on the continent.

Echelon

A Human-Votan Private Mercenary Company that works for the highest bidder. They are currently working for Varus Soleptor and the Votan Collective. Their contracts were based around PvP play.

TopNotch Industries

A scientific and altruistic company founded by one of the Defiant Few, currently under the direction of Rosa Rodriguez. Their contracts were based around helping farmers and dock workers from raiders.

Dark Matter

Originally a black-ops unit of the Votan Collective during the Pale Wars, now is an anti-human terrorist organization reformed by Pale Wars veteran Nim Shondu.
  • Anti-Human Alliance: They are a Votan terrorist organization that firmly believe that humans and Votans can't coexist and as such, they have to destroy humanity to safeguard the Votan races, even if that means killing moderate Votans in the process.
  • Nebulous Evil Organization: Nobody believed in their existence until they started raiding mines and docks in search of the Ark Reactor pieces.
  • Renegade Splinter Faction: The original Dark Matter seceded from the Votan Collective after the signing of the Armistice to continue fighting humanity until they were put down by both the remaining Earth and Votan forces. The new reformed Dark Matter is officially condemned by the Votan Collective.
    • Actually does this twice, as the remains of Dark Matter that don't rejoin the VC form into the Neo-Votanis Front, which is even more hellbent on causing a new Pale War. They then proceed to get beaten into the ground the same way as the original unit, by the VC and E-rep working together.

Neo-Votanis Front

A successor of Dark Matter following the death of Nim Shondu. They were attempting to created bio-weapons using the Shrill to attack human settlements. They only appear in Season 4's story missions and expedition.

    Antagonists

Nim Shondu

A Castithan veteran who served in the Dark Matter black-ops unit during the Pale Wars. Fought against the Defiant Few at the Battle of Defiance where he garnered a reputation as a Blood Knight and was thought killed during the Pale Wars. However, he resurfaces years later and reforms Dark Matter into a terrorist organization, with the goal of using an Ark to destroy the fledging Human-Votan community that formed following the conflict out of a burning hatred of humanity and those willing to co-exist with them.

"Jackleg" Joe Teach

One of the leaders of the 99ers in the Bay Area.

Peter Nardone AKA Psycho Pete

An insane cyborg living on Angel Island with his "friends".

  • Ax-Crazy: His response to being called a psycho is to have his "friends" kill the person saying it.
  • The Beastmaster: His "friends" are hellbugs, whom he controls/calls via a cybernetic implant in his larynx that lets him mimic their cries.
  • Berserk Button/Hair-Trigger Temper
    "Don't call me psycho!"

Dy'Dekuso

Gulanee leader of the Raiders in the Bay Area.
