Major Characters

    Akiho Shinomoto

Voiced by: Minori Suzuki (JP), Amanda Lee (EN) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/akiho_9.png

A New Transfer Student who joins Sakura's junior high class in the Clear Card Arc.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: Akiho's hair is platinum blonde in the manga while the anime made it stone gray.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Was derided by the rest of her clan for being an orphan and having no magic.
  • Alternate Identity Amnesia: She appears to have no recollection of when she tries to steal Sakura's key in their dreams. The manga reveals that it wasn't her in Sakura's dreams but her mother Lillie.
  • Birds of a Feather: She and Sakura have similar sounding family names and near-identical personalities. Meiling even lampshades it, calling Akiho a clone of Sakura.
  • Cute Bookworm: She loves books, and her house contains a huge library of books that her family has collected over the years. She also mentions that she has a lot of books in her room.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Her parents died when she was only one year old. She was belittled by her clan for having no magic, then exploited by them as a 'blank book'.
  • Family of Choice: Even after Kaito's Cosmic Retcon is undone and the main characters regain their memories, the Kinomoto family still considers Akiho an honorary daughter and member of the True Companions.
  • Floral Theme Naming: Her real name is Cosmos. In Japan, the cosmos flower is the "Sakura of autumn", making her name a match to Sakura. Lillie and Nadeshiko were friends so likely the Floral Theme Naming was deliberate.
  • Foil: She can be easily compared and contrasted to Sakura. Their family names sound very similar (which Sakura even points out) and their personalities are nearly identical (the only major differences are that Sakura is more energetic and outgoing while Akiho is more reserved and polite), but they have different backgrounds. Sakura was born and raised in Tomoeda, has many friends, is fully in-tune to her magical abilities (as of Clear Card) and her family is always home (with the exception of her deceased mother). Akiho was born into a rich family that she barely sees, ends up moving around a lot, her only friend prior to coming to Tomoeda seems to be Kaito, and she's completely unaware that her stuffed rabbit Momo is a magical being or of her magical alter-ego in the anime. Their given names also contrast each other; Sakura's name means "cherry blossom", a flower that's heavily associated with spring, while Akiho's name contains the kanji for "autumn". Their families are similar as both can use magic to various degrees, but while Sakura has developed very powerful magic Akiho has no magic power at all.
  • Girls Love Stuffed Animals: She always carries around a stuffed rabbit named Momo in her school bag. However, she has no idea that Momo isn't really a stuffed toy and is only pretending to be one.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: She tells Yuna that she dreams of a girl who has everything she wants badly and wants to take it from her.
  • Human Weapon: Since she was deemed useless because of her lack of magic powers, her clan decided to turn her into a magic weapon instead. They used her body as a "blank book" to write countless of spells, not caring at all if they destroyed Akiho's soul in the process.
  • Identical Stranger: Akiho looks almost exactly like Sakura, to the point of being the same height and having the same measurements. The only visible difference is her hair, and even so, interestingly, Akiho's hair color and curls make her look vaguely like a young version of Sakura's mother.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: Her eyes are a pale blue, and mark her as a sweet, kind girl who is still fitting in with the class.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: According to Kaito, Akiho takes after her late mother Lillie. This, of course, is juxtaposed by Fujitaka comparing Sakura to Nadeshiko on the next page.
  • Living Battery: In the manga it’s revealed that because she has no magic of her own she ended up regarded as “blank book” and so the clan filled her up with their spells.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: She implies this by explaining family is super rich but always travel for work, and she seems to move around because of it. Furthermore, it seems that her butler, Kaito, is one of the only consistent relationships she has. It's revealed she was lonely in her childhood because her clan, entirely made up of powerful sorcerers, looked down on her for having no magic powers. Ever since she started travelling with Kaito, she appears to be trying to forget her past with her clan and comforts herself knowing she has Kaito and Momo now, along with her new friends.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: There are quite a few things in her life that are deliberately being kept from her. Not only does Sakura keep her own magical activities secret from her, but she also has no idea that her beloved stuffed rabbit is really a sentient magical being, or that her caretaker/butler is a magician who's banned from his former magician's society and regularly turns back time for her so that she won't catch on to how much he knows.
  • Morality Pet: Kaito and Momo's goals are unclear but they are portrayed as very sketchy at the least. Nevertheless, both appear to genuinely like Akiho or at least be concerned for her involvement in their schemes, and Momo reminds Kaito to not forget what's important to him while looking in her direction.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: Syaoran and Kero repeatedly note they can't sense any magic from her. Chapter 25 reveals she actually does come from a powerful clan of magicians — but she's the only one who can't use magic, leading to her being ostracised by her family. The clan however do intend to secretly fill Akiho up with spells one day, which is why she's been travelling all over the world with Kaito.
  • New Transfer Student: She transfers into Sakura's class during the Clear Card Arc.
  • Ojou: She's from a well-off family that owns a huge library of books, moves into a Big Fancy House (which happens to be the one that Eriol stayed in while he was in Tomoeda), has a butler who looks after all her needs, speaks formally, and has Regal Ringlets.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: She is an orphan as shown in Chapter 61. Because of this, she was disparaged from her clan, on top of not having magic.
  • Precocious Crush: She describes her butler Kaito as her most important person and he looks at least twice her age. Considering how her relationship with Kaito seems to be one of the only consistent ones she's ever had, it's not too surprising that she'd develop a crush on him.
  • Regal Ringlets: Her hair styled in two halves that curl at the end, fitting with her refined demeanor.
  • Super Gullible: The third person after Sakura and Syaoran to be naive enough to fall for Takashi's lies.
  • Uptown Girl: She's a rich lady who has a big crush on her butler.
  • Walking the Earth: Was traveling with Kaito before moving to Tomeda. She returns to traveling the world in order to find the knowledge to save Kaito and undo his curse.

    Yuna D. Kaito

Voiced by: Natsuki Hanae (JP), Brandon McInnis (EN) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yuna_d_kaito_9.png

Akiho's live-in caretaker who supposedly has ties to the Magicians' Society in England.

  • And I Must Scream: The Will of D inflicts this on Kaito. It traps him in a monstrous form in a cage where time has broken down as he's retgone from existence.
  • The Atoner: Everything he did was to make up for unwittingly condemning Akiho to be a living artifact for her clan, as his ultimate plan was to transfer all of the spells she was forcibly infused with into himself using the Exchange card.
  • Battle Butler: He's Akiho's butler, but he's also a very powerful magician.
  • Cast From Hitpoints: Kaito's power is forbidden magic and thus casting costs him his lifespan.
  • Child Prodigy: He displayed a stunning talent for magic from a very young age.
  • Cosmic Retcon: Kaito's ultimate plan involves rewriting Akiho's past so that she is Sakura's twin sister and a member of the Kinomoto family while he absorbs the spells that were written in Akiho and is Ret-Gone from existence.
  • The Dreaded: As noted in Episode 21, his former Magicians' Society is terrified of him and fear going against him despite believing that he stole an artifact from him.
  • The Exile: Yuna is banned from the Magicians' Society for losing an artifact from them, though they heavily suspect that he actually stole it. It’s eventually revealed this artifact is Akiho herself, but it’s heavily implied Yuna did so in order to save her from her clan.
  • Friendless Background: He never had any interest in making friends when growing up. Akiho is apparently the only person he ever grew to care about.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Uses the Exchange to absorb all the spells Akiho was infused with by her clan to free her, even if his body wouldn’t be able to contain the magic or if the Seal of D activates.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: He easily and efficiently learnt spells with little to no instructions. This only made him even more of an aloof loner.
  • Last-Name Basis: Akiho almost exclusively refers to him as "Kaito-san". Momo similarly calls him by Kaito only.
  • Lunacy: Syaoran can sense that he has moon magic. It's foreshadowing Kaito's power since Time magic was established to be under the domain of the moon.
  • My Greatest Failure: He said that Akiho was a "blank book". Unfortunately, his words taken literally caused the clan to exploit Akiho, not even caring if her soul was destroyed. This affected him so badly that he decided to have Sakura create the Exchange card so all the spells embedded into Akiho would be transferred to him instead.
  • Mysterious Middle Initial: Accoding to Eriol, the D in his name is a title from a notorious British wizarding society. Interestingly, this evokes the kingdom of Celes from the connected work Tsubasa -RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE-, where the magicians of the highest rank gain the middle initial D as part of their names.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: It's hinted that Kaito's Cosmic Retcon and use of forbidden magic helped destabilize the time-space continuum, contributing to the events of Tsubasa -RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE-.
  • Only Friend: As a child, his only friend was Akiho's mother Lillie.
  • Purple Is Powerful: Yuna is themed with the color purple, and he's also a very powerful magician. So powerful, in fact, that even the Magicians' Society fear going against him even though they suspect he stole an artifact from them.
  • Time Master: Kaito can manipulate time and regularly uses it to manipulate Akiho's memories so that she doesn't catch onto what how much he knows. His magic circle also resembles a clock.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: It was his simple comment of comparing Akiho to a "blank book" that led to her own clan experimenting on her, trying to turn her into a living book of spells at the cost of her soul. Needless to say, he regrets this comment very heavily.
  • When He Smiles: Yuna smiles a lot, but rarely laughs. When he does let out a hearty chuckle, Akiho is surprised and asks him to laugh like that more often.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Everything he did was to free Akiho from her fate as the clan’s living spell book and to give her a better life with Sakura and her family.

    Momo

Voiced by: Minako Kotobuki (JP), Jad Saxton (EN) Foreign VAs

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/momo_clear_card.png

Momo is a little bunny Akiho carries with her at all times. Only Yuna knows she's a magical being.

  • Alice Allusion: Momo is the White Rabbit to Akiho's Alice.
  • Eyes Always Shut: Her eyes are always closed. However, closeups of her widened eyes show mere black blocks where there should be at least some discernible eye designs, which hints her eyes are completely black and wouldn't make a big difference if she kept them open.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Kaito kept important aspects of his plan hidden from Momo. Notably that he was planning on sacrificing himself to save Akiho. It means that when she tried to stop him she wasn't as effective as she lacked critical knowledge.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: She laughs like a noblewoman in the anime's second ending. Although the laugh itself is not heard by the viewer, her paw gesturing and the context indicate the trope.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • When Akiho accidentally gives a Love Confession to Kaito, Momo thinks to herself that taking it back wasn't necessary. She also reminds Kaito periodically not to lose sight of what's important to him.
    • She also looks particularly amused in the anime's second ending, where she stuffs both Kero and Spinel with chocolate and laughs while the latter hugs euphorically the former with hearts coming out of her.
  • Sweet Tooth: Similarly to Kero she has a love for sweets, though unlike Kero she has a very specific fondness for chocolate.
  • Toy Disguise: Like Kero, she pretends to be a stuffed animal to hide her true nature, but in her case she even keeps up the disguise in front of Akiho, who has no idea she's really a sentient magical being.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Momo loves chocolate for its elegant design and taste.

The Clear Cards

    In General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clear_card_back.jpg

New Cards appearing after the mysterious clearing of the Sakura Cards.

  • Affably Evil: Most of the cards have mischievous and destructive tendencies.
  • Canon Foreigner: Similar to the Clow Cards, there are anime-exclusive Clear Cards, such as Gravitation, Reversal, and Hail.
  • Cards of Power: Like the Clow/Sakura Cards, they're magical cards that can grant Sakura access to their abilities.
  • Expy Coexistence: Sakura and her friends realize that she's been subconsciously basing some cards' designs off of her friends whenever she sees or thinks about them before capturing the card. One example is the Rewind card; the card turns Syaoran into a child, and when Sakura captures the card its appearance is based on child Syaoran. The same thing can happen if a Clear Card matches the power of a Sakura Card as is the case with Clear Card Mirror looking similar to Sakura Card Mirror as she's unconsciously thinking about the original seeing as how it's the same power.
  • Fire, Water, Wind: In contrast to the Clow cards, the three elemental Clear cards are Gale (wind), Aqua (water) and Blaze (fire).
  • Foil: All of the cards that have appeared so far have similarities and differences with the Sakura Cards.
  • Heel–Face Turn:
    • Whenever a card is captured it becomes loyal to its master.
    • Kaito succeeds in turning almost all of the Clear cards against Sakura.
  • Living MacGuffin: New cards to capture. They drive the story and episode plots.
  • Scissors Cuts Rock: Sakura attempts to use Aqua on Blaze. Blaze comes out on top after a brief Beam-O-War.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Though not necessarily evil, some of the Clear Cards were rather violent and had to be sealed into cards.
    • The Clear Card eventually end up bound in Alice In Clockland.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Zig-zagged. While most of the cards bear similar to a Clow/Sakura Card in one way or another, the level to which this applies varies. Eventually this all turns out to be justified, since Sakura is subconsciously creating the Clear Cards herself based on her own wishes, and since Sakura is so familiar with the Clow/Sakura Cards it's only natural that the Clear Cards would be similar.
  • Undying Loyalty: When they are captured by Sakura, they obey any commands she gives them. Flight is easily the most obvious example, as it's able to push itself to Mach speeds after noticing Sakura's despair at not being fast enough to catch a fleeing card.
  • Weather-Control Machine: Aqua is able to make it rain, while Hail is able to create a hailstorm.

    Gale

    Siege
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearsiege.png

  • Deflector Shields: Siege is this one way, where attacks are bounced back from within its walls.
  • Logical Weakness: Siege, a balloon-like box, is captured by being popped with a pin.

    Aqua
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearaqua.png

    Reflect
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearreflect.png

    Action
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearaction.png

  • Animate Inanimate Object: Action is able to manipulate objects to move.
  • Green Thumb: Action is Sakura's go-to card to command plant-life. Curiously, Action seems capable of altering the plants it animates, being capable of enlarging a tree's roots to attack Sakura and later, when she used it against Flight, make bushes spit out vine whips.

    Gravitation
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cleargravitation.png

  • Gravity Master: Gravitation is able to put a black hole in any object its master desires, pulling anything into it at a controllable speed.
  • Jump Physics: While chasing Flight through a hedge maze Tomoyo's garden, Sakura used Gravitation to make perfect jumps between the maze's walls and decorative statues, as the card would always pull her towards her desired landing spot at a safe speed for her to land.

    Record
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearrecord.png

    Flight
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearflight.png

  • Power Gives You Wings: Sakura uses Flight to give herself wings to fly in a similar fashion to when she uses Fly.
  • Sole Survivor: The only Clear Card to remain at the end, as Sakura used all of Blank and Remind's power, while the rest of the cards were bound to the disappeared Alice in Clockland.
  • Token Good Teammate: Flight is the Clear Card most dedicated to and loyal to Sakura. When Kaito takes control of the Clear Cards, Flight is the only one to not be controlled.

    Lucid
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearlucid.png

  • Invisibility Cloak: Lucid takes the form of a curtain that is able to make things invisible.

    Spiral
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearspiral.png

  • Blow You Away: Spiral has the power to entangle beings inside a tornado.

    Snooze
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearsnooze.png

    Labyrinth
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearlabyrinth.png

  • Bizarrchitecture: Labyrinth takes the form of an omnidirectional stairway in the anime, while in the manga it took the form of an infinite stairway with pillars and arches.
  • The Maze: It takes the form of a labyrinth, albeit as an endless stairway with arches that loops itself.
  • Reality Warper: Labyrinth can superimpose itself on local reality.

    Reversal
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearreversal.png

  • Gravity Master: Reversal is able to reverse the position of anything, such as making the King Penguin statue upside-down.

    Hail
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearhail.png

    Mirage
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearmirage.png

  • Master of Illusion: Mirage created hallucinations only seen by Sakura, and later made a wide open field.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: In card form, Mirage has the appearance of a white fish with a bird's beak and long feather-like fins.

    Swing
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearswing.png

    Struggle
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearstruggle.png

  • Anime Chinese Girl: Struggle appears as a young girl wearing a Chinese-themed dress and odango hair buns. She also fights with martial arts.
  • Cute Bruiser: Struggle takes the form of a teenage girl in Asian-themed clothing and, like The Fight, is a master at hand-to-hand combat.

    Appear
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearappear.png

    Blaze
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearblaze.png

  • Giant Flyer: Similar to Aqua, Blaze is a giant bird made out of fire.
  • Logical Weakness: Blaze, a giant phoenix, got captured after Syaoran used a new wind technique to snuff out its flames.
  • Playing with Fire: Blaze has power over fire.

    Mirror
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clearmirror.png

  • Horned Humanoid: She has a pair of crystal horns protruding from her head.
  • Master of Illusion: Mirror has the ability to create inverted illusions of reality such as buildings and locations.
  • Power Copying: Mirror can create duplicates of other Clear Cards, including their powers. Sakura uses it to make another Flight when she wants someone else to fly.
  • Reused Character Design: Not only is she the equivalent of Clow's Mirror, her card's design is nearly identical with only her horns making her different from Clow's Mirror.
