    Izuku Midoriya

Izuku Midoriya

Class: Druid —> Arch Druid

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/midoriya.png

The story's protagonist and primary viewpoint character. Izuku was originally one of the unlucky 20 percent of the population to be born Quirkless. Despite this, he always wanted to be a Hero like his idol, All Might, and clung to his dream even when everyone thought it was impossible. Being accidentally killed by his idol in a battle with the Sludge Villain, Izuku met the Goddess Aqua, who offered to reincarnate him in another world. By defeating the Demon King threatening said world, Izuku could make a wish to go back home and potentially fulfill his dream. After a series of events that lead to Izuku choosing Aqua as his "Cheat Item" and being classed into a Druid, Izuku has taken his first steps to not only saving this world but becoming a true Hero.

  • A God I Am Not: Due to his growing achievements, people begin to consider him divine in some form. He begs people not to treat him as such.
  • The Ace: It only takes a few weeks for him to become Axel's most competent adventurer.
  • Achievements in Ignorance: As he did not know druids normally use a focus to cast their spells, his initial feats are done without one.
  • All-Loving Hero: He is of the opinion that killing people should be the last resort, and even then, balks at the idea, as he believes a hero should never kill. Unfortunately, the world does not think the same.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: To battle the Mobile Fortress Destroyer, he transforms into a giant Treant.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a very gentle Nice Guy who will go out of his way to help anyone that needs it. He's also the guy that single-handedly stopped the cabbage invasion's second wave, stopped Beldia from attacking Axel and was directly responsible for killing him, and easily defeated Kyouya in duel even though he was the clear underdog. When his plans to leave Axel behind get nixed, he accumulates so much rage that he decides the Mobile Fortress Destroyer would make an excellent punching bag.
  • Beyond the Impossible: He seemly specializes in this.
  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: His defeat of the Destroyer rendered him Asleep for Days, and afterwards he's in so much pain that he can barely move. It takes a lot of healing magic to return him to normal.
  • Chick Magnet: Nearly all of his team members have the hots for him, and the effect spreads outside the team as well. He is in a relationship with Megumin but knows about the attraction some of his team has for him.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: As much as he tries to change, Izuku's still the heroic young man that risked his life to save his bully. After he leaves Axel, intending to not return, he ends up turning back to take a sick Iris and her entourage there so the former can be healed of her sickness. Complaining all the way, but still doing it.
  • The Dreaded: Tied with his The Ace status. It gets to the point that, when a sleazy noble adventurer attempts to browbeat Aela into handing over her bowgun, it only takes two words from Izuku for the noble (and everyone in the Guild Hall) to freeze in abject fear.
  • Green Thumb: His druid powers allow him to control and create plants.
    • The greatest demonstration being Genesic World Tree, which creates a huge tree - something that most druids would consider their magnum opus.
    • He tops even this by transforming into a sixty-meter tall Treant (something that is considered completely impossible by all local accounts) to fight the Destroyer.
  • Guile Hero: One of the class options he had before "picking" Druid was Rogue. He applies his guile to his spells and combat, to make himself stronger than he would be according to his adventurer card.
  • Humble Hero: Gets easily flustered when people praise him for his genuine accomplishments.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: So much so, that the succubi are shocked by how intense it is, to the point they are forced to use magic just to find what kind of person he finds attractive.
  • Loophole Abuse: During the duel with Kyouya, one of the rules is that no one can cast anything between the issuing of the duel and its beginning. Since Izuku had already cast his vine-controlling spell before meeting Kyouya, he can get away with it.
  • Mood-Swinger: Downplayed, but as a druid his moods are affected by the seasons. Part of his Surrounded by Idiots attitude was because autumn was making him "stupidly intolerant", as he puts it later, and in winter his libido is significantly increased to the point that he notes that likely the only thing keeping him from grabbing a hibernating Liza's breasts when he's resting on her after defeating the Destroyer is that he's in too much pain to try it.
  • Nay-Theist: After meeting Aqua and learning of Eris' Fantastic Racism towards harpies (as well as the Corrupt Churches they implicitly support), he's unwilling to consider them as worthy of worship.
  • Outside-the-Box Tactic: Izuku regularly uses his spells in new, inventive ways no one had considered before.
    • One of his first spells creates whips made of vines. Another helps him make plants grow. Combining both, he can lash monsters and then grow the plants until they burrow into their brains. Adding thorns to the mix makes this tactic even deadlier. He then increases this to create a large net that he uses to capture and kill most of the cabbage invasion's second wave (requiring only Chika and Liza's help to hold the net in place).
    • He can use plant control to treat a vine whip as a tentacle, allowing him to hold objects with it while keeping his hands free.
    • During the fight with Beldia, he can imitate a high-level spell by making his vines dig through earth and erupt at the right points. He also creates a "clone" of himself made of plants to trick Beldia into over-committing, leaving him wide open to a devastating combination attack between Izuku and Megumin.
    • He can use his vines and thorns to recreate a dialysis machine.
  • Red Baron: He's known as the Sage of Axel, much to his chagrin.
  • Reincarnation: One of his spells, which allows him to bring people back from death. While it is costlier than the normal resurrection and has the high chance of bringing people back as a different race or even gender, it has the advantage of washing away all sins and curses that had been attached to the soul.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: If the task of saving people clashes with the government, organized religion, or other authority, Izuku will ignore said authority and save people.
  • Surrounded by Idiots: He will at times feel bothered and/or angry at the lack of common sense shown by some of the local people. This is partially because of the effect his class has on him making his mood change with the seasons.
  • Team Dad: He takes his duty as team leader very seriously. Anyone trying to threaten someone in his party will have to face him.
  • Took a Level in Badass: After killing the Lyndon College mage to defend Megumin from her, Izuku achieves the final condition required to become an Arch Druid.
  • Undignified Death: While nowhere near as embarrassing as Kazuma's death in canon, Izuku ends up dying when All Might's Detroit Smash against the Sludge Villain ends up sending him flying head first into a barrel of metal pipes.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: He doesn't use it much, but Wild Shape lets him become any animal he knows about - even if it is an animal that is not native to Belzerg... such as a dinosaur. When he fights the Destroyer, he transforms into a sixty meter tall Treant - with the aid of the world itself, so he can stop the Walking Disaster Area.

    Aqua

Aqua

Class: Arch Priestess

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/konosuba_aqua.png

A water goddess who meets Izuku in the afterlife and introduces him to the world setting, before rushing him through the reincarnation process in an attempt to just get rid of him. After a poorly worded order for Izuku to choose "the most powerful thing in the room" as his "cheat item", the celestial bureaucracy banished her from the heavens, only letting her back in on the condition that she can only return if she and Izuku defeat the Demon King.

Proud, hedonistic, and more than a little lazy, Aqua has caused several issues for Izuku's party, made even worse by Izuku's refusal to pamper her and forcing her to pull her own weight. Following a duel with the reincarnated "Hero" Kyouya, Aqua left Izuku's party and joined with Kyouya, whose blindness toward her faults lets her live in the comfort she "deserves".

  • Alcohol-Induced Idiocy: Her being drunk or wanting to get drunk causes her many problems.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Leaving Izuku's party for Kyouya's does get her the pampering and worship she seeks. She also ends up missing out on being part of the rainfall of fortune Izuku and his party receive (as well as the self-destruction of Axel's Axis Cult branch), gets into even more trouble due to how things work out in her travel with Kyouya and end up being one of the causes of Kyouya's party's collapse.
  • Entitled Bitch: Even though Izuku does the lion's share of the work while she (mostly) lazes about, Aqua keeps complaining because she is not getting a larger part of the loot (and because Izuku does not worship nor pamper her). Also, she constantly complains about Izuku's methods to help her, but the moment she gets in trouble again she immediately runs to beg Izuku to get her out of it.
  • Hoist by Her Own Petard: Aqua keeps shooting herself in the foot with her actions.
    • Browbeating Izuku into picking "the most powerful thing in the room" (though, to be honest, she did have reason to be angry, given that Izuku had spent several hours already dithering on what to pick) ends up with her being forced to join Izuku's quest.
    • Convincing Izuku to pay for the Axis Cult's debts in Axel with cash causes a big blow against her faith, because not only is she forced to go against her own doctrine and erase Chika and Liza's slave marks, but the Axis head priest and his lackeys take the money with them and run - and since it was meant to pay for their taxes, not only do they lose their church, they are also accused of stealing the money.
    • Forcing Izuku to duel Kyouya, and then leaving Izuku's party to join Kyouya's causes her to miss out on the large windfall from defeating Beldia.
  • The Load: She barely helps in fights, wastes money on her vices, keeps getting in trouble Izuku has to pull her out of... it's easier to count when she's not this. In fact she's somehow even more useless than she was in canon.
  • Loser Deity: Even more than her canon self.
  • Ms. Vice Girl: Funding her alcohol addiction is the basis of many of her biggest mistakes.
  • Never My Fault: She's unwilling to accept how she can be at fault for her blatant mistakes.
  • Skewed Priorities: Even though she knows the best way to recover her Goddess position is to help Izuku defeat the Devil King as soon as possible, she persists in wasting time and resources into feeding her vices and generally being The Load.

    Megumin

Megumin

Class: Arch Wizard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/konosuba_megumin.png

A thirteen-year-old mage from the Crimson Demon clan and the first recruit to join Izuku's party. She is a powerful mage and well-versed in magical knowledge, but her obsession with Explosion magic and refusal to use any other magic has made her extremely specialized and crippled her combat ability outside of her single, one-use Explosion spell.

Through Izuku's influence, Megumin has started to branch out, learn more spells and gain versatility as a mage. Combining several minor spells and Izuku's own knowledge of science and physics, Megumin has created new spells like Hellflame and Big Bang, increasing her destructive potential.

  • Adaptational Badass: Her work with Izuku not only helps her achieve more versatility but gets her access to the knowledge she uses to create more powerful spells.
  • Badass Adorable: Yes, she is quite adorable. Now watch her destroy entire castles with Big Bang or burn things down with Hellflame.
  • Chuunibyou: Like most Crimson Demons. Izuku's influence means her commitment wanes and waxes, depending on the occasion.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Save for very few exceptions, she does not like other girls or women trying to steal Izuku's attention.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Before Izuku managed to convince her to branch out, she only used the Explosion spell.
  • Fantastic Nuke: Explosion was bad enough, but Izuku teaching her about physics lets her develop Big Bang, which is powerful enough to reduce an entire castle and the cliff it stood on to a crater.
  • Playing with Fire: At Izuku's suggestion, she learns to use Create Flame. Then she goes on to create Hellflame once she learns more from Izuku's Chemistry notebook about combustion.

    Darkness

Lalatina Dustiness "Darkness" Ford

Class: Crusader

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/konosuba_darkness.png

The second recruit to Izuku's party, a powerful crusader with immense strength, and defensive ability... but terrible accuracy and an enormous masochistic streak. Despite her proclivities, Darkness is an excellent member of the party and has helped them through rough spots on several occasions. Darkness actually forced her way into the party by tricking Aqua, after seeing Aqua suffering from her million Eris debt to Izuku, out of hopes that Izuku could help fulfill some of her fantasies.

Much like Megumin, Darkness's abilities have also grown due to Izuku's influence. Instead of a longsword, Darkness has switched to using a club and shield made of ironbark, increasing her accuracy and defense while still allowing her to be struck as she wishes.

  • Adaptational Badass: Trading in her longsword for an Iron Bark club-and-shield combo makes her more capable on the battlefield, to the point that she can go mano a mano against Beldia.
  • Carry a Big Stick: To take advantage of her strength and avoid the pesky problem of her lack of accuracy with a sword, Izuku gives her an Iron Bark club with thorns. It proves to be very good at what it does.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Chris may be her friend, but when she steals Chika's egg she is clearly done with the idiocy.
  • Hero Worship: After seeing everything Izuku is able and willing to do for the sake of helping people, she considers him a Saint.
  • If It's You, It's Okay: She is willing to shed her masochistic fantasies when it comes to Izuku because she considers him too holy.
  • Luckily, My Shield Will Protect Me: Her Iron Bark shield is strong enough to let her withstand strikes that could kill a bugbear chieftain. Beldia is so dumbstruck by how strong it is that he believes it was blessed by the gods.

    Chika

Chika

Class: Trickster

A Black Harpy demi-human sold to Izuku as a slave, Chika is a cheerful and somewhat scatterbrained member of Izuku's party. Originally owned by Dronya, Chika originally had her wings and tail clipped, leaving her unable to fly. After Izuku gets her healed and freed from her slave seal, Chika has sworn complete and total loyalty to Izuku, even though she is technically not a slave anymore.

  • Absurdly Sharp Claws: Her Talons are incredibly sharp, to the point that her even holding you down with them could pierce skin with little effort.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: She's very pretty, but her voice is consistently compared to nails on a blackboard. As a result, she tries to speak in a low whisper as often as possible.
  • Genius Ditz: While she is a bit of a scatterbrain, she is also smart enough to become a wizard, a class requiring high Intelligence.
  • Happiness in Slavery: Becoming Izuku's slave was probably the best thing to ever happen to her, and she has no problem in still serving Izuku after her seal is erased.
  • Harping on About Harpies: She's a Black Harpy.
  • Master of Illusion: She learned to project illusions of herself, very handy as decoys for people she wants to stay away from (like Chris the Thief, and Wiz).
  • Third-Person Person: Chika speaks in this way.
  • The Trickster: The name of her eventual class, essentially a Rogue/Wizard hybrid.

    Liza

Liza

Class: Dragon Totem Warrior

An albino Gator demi-human sold to Izuku as a slave, Liza is a stoic and quiet member of Izuku's party. Originally owned by Dronya, Liza had her tongue removed by unscrupulous slavers, leaving her unable to speak. After Izuku gets her healed and freed from her slave seal, Liza has sworn complete and total loyalty to Izuku, even though she is technically not a slave anymore.

  • Amazonian Beauty: She's pretty muscular and undeniably attractive.
  • A Lizard Named "Liz": Izuku gives her the name "Liza". He acknowledges it is not very original.
  • The Big Guy: She's the tallest and physically strongest member of Izuku's party. One of her strikes ballparks at 'tearing a Bugbear chieftain apart' levels.
  • Character Tics: She tends to wag her tail when she's happy.
  • Cute Mute: At first, due to having had her tongue cut out. Even after having it restored, she still tends toward The Quiet One.
  • Happiness in Slavery: Being bought by Izuku got her a master that treats her like a person and made her safety and health paramount, allowed her to recover her tongue, and finally led to her freedom. She still acts as if she were Izuku's slave, and happily so.
  • Lightning Bruiser: The physically strongest member of Izuku's party, and capable of doing a Flash Step on a Thief to break her sword with her teeth.
  • Lizard Folk: She's a demihuman with alligator traits.
  • Marshmallow Hell: She likes giving this to Izuku, since he accidentally landed on her chest while she was naked after getting her slave seal removed.
  • Simple-Minded Wisdom: She isn't going to win a Nobel Prize any time soon, but she's smarter than she looks.
  • The Stoic: Very little can unsettle her. Anything that does better be ready to face her wrath.
  • Super-Strength: She's strong enough to carry a fully armored Claire (while she's carrying Iris) in her arms.
  • You No Take Candle: Being unable to speak for years (as well as the average Gator being less intelligent than a human) has left her with a limited vocabulary. She can still make herself understood.

    Aela

Fio Aela Bella Flora

Class: Ranger

One of Kyouya's former "cheerleaders", Aela is the daughter of a minor noble who left home to become an adventurer. Joining the "Hero" Kyouya as a Ranger, she soon found herself doing little more than cheering on him while he did all the work.

After Kyouya's humiliating loss to Izuku in a duel, she offers to temporarily take on his new debt, only for him to betray her and leave her to deal with it. She ends up joining Izuku's party out of lack of better options, but soon she grows both as a person and as an adventurer as she becomes her own person under her new leader.

  • Adaptational Job Change: In the original KonoSuba she was a Thief (which was given to Clemea here), while she's a Ranger here.
  • Adaptational Name Change: She goes by her Adventurer name Aela instead of her given name Fio here.
  • The Dreaded: Killing a Rookie Killer with two bowgun bolts grants her this status amongst Axel's adventurers.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: When she meets Izuku (particularly after the duel) she thinks he is a horrible person for how he defeated Kyouya (whom she regards as a worthy hero) and having slaves. Spending time with Izuku (who not only cares for her but also respects her and helps her grow as an adventurer) allows her to compare him with Kyouya and realize the latter's somewhat lacking.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: Variation. At the depth of it, Aela is not sure about why Izuku has invested so much in her growth as a person and adventurer even after the mess-up with Kyouya.
  • Only Sane Man: Between Izuku's penchant for telling common knowledge to take a hike, Megumin and Yunyun being Chuunibyous, Darkness' masochistic tendencies, and Chika and Liza's slavish devotion to Izuku, Aela ends up being this by default.
  • Super Prototype: Her new bowgun Bianca is the first and currently most advanced bowgun in the world. All others made by other smiths are clearly inferior copies, and even those others made by Talenof lack the quality Bianca has due to the unique materials used to make it.
  • Work Off the Debt: Aela offers to take on Kyouya's debt to Izuku with the expectation that Kyouya would soon return and make the payment, only for Kyouya to skip town with the clear intention of not returning. Aela is forced to join Izuku's party to pay for the debt she has contracted. She ends up reaching this target after killing the Rookie Killer, much to her surprise.

    Yunyun

Yunyun

Class: Archmage

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yunyun_konosuba.png

The thirteen-year-old daughter of the Crimson Demon clan leader, Yunyun is an expert Archmage with great knowledge of magic and spells who is Megumin's Childhood Friend/Rival. Having left her hometown for reasons unknown, she enters the story by trying to warn Megumin that the Lyndon College is targeting her. At Izuku's invitation, she joins his party, using her knowledge and sanity to counterbalance the others - even if she sometimes can barely believe the stuff Izuku gets up to.

  • Because You Were Nice to Me: She is fond of Izuku because he never makes fun of her name - and also because he makes sure to help her integrate into the party and gets her powerful magical tools.
  • Chuunibyou: Even though she is probably the only Crimson Demon to not be this 24/7, she still has her moments - such as her earnest discussion with Megumin on how to pose while wielding a new wand or her attempts to understand Izuku and his particular brand of madness.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She may want to know the secrets of Big Bang, but steal Megumin's boyfriend? Perish the thought!
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Her childhood was very lonely due to her status as the clan leader's daughter, and the closest she had to a friend was Megumin. A flashback via Friendship Stone shows her being willing to summon a demon just to have a friend.
  • Laser Blade: Using the magecite wand that Izuku gifted her and his scientific knowledge about how electricity works, she channels her mana through it to project an energy blade. She ends up calling it a Light-Saber.

    Wiz

Wiz

Class: Archwizard

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wiz_konosuba.png
Wiz is a beautiful, kind and ditzy shop owner that lives in Axel, making her living by selling (or trying to sell) magical objects of all sorts. Secretly, though, she's a lich and a semi-retired General of the Demon King, whose main purpose is to maintain the barrier protecting the Demon King's castle as long as the Demon King doesn't threaten the innocent. Her meeting Izuku ends up causing her world to turn upside down.
  • Abhorrent Admirer: While she's quite nice, her obsession with Chika and her plumage causes the latter to want to keep a good barrier between herself and the shopkeeper.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: She's a bit off her rocker.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: She became a lich so she could take on the curse afflicting her friends without dying.
  • Loophole Abuse: Reincarnation allows her to return to life without risking death from the curse she took, as well as freeing her friends from it.
  • Love Epiphany: By Chapter 20, she internally admits to have fallen for Izuku because of his kind heart.
  • My Species Doth Protest Too Much: As an Avariel, Harpies should be her mortal enemies. Instead, she's enamoured with Chika and her plumage, much to Chris's chagrin.
  • Older Than They Look: She looks like a beautiful twenty-year-old woman. She's actually quite a bit older than that.
  • Sense Freak: Regaining her sense of taste and needing to sleep again makes her giddy.
  • Winged Humanoid: Izuku's Reincarnation turns her into an Avariel, a winged elf that had gone extinct centuries before.

    Clemea

Clemea

Class: Thief

Another of Kyouya's former "cheerleaders". After Aqua joins their party, she becomes unable to put up with her antics, and upon hearing of Izuku's recent feats and her former partner's progress, she escapes hoping for the chance to join him.
  • Adaptational Job Change: In the original KonoSuba she was a Warrior, while here she's a Thief (Aela's original class). The author later clarified that this mistake was due to her outfit not looking like that of a Warrior.
  • Break the Haughty: She went through a lot of crap on her trip back to Axel, and when she finally arrived Luna tore her a new one for betraying Aela, rendering her efforts into a big All for Nothing.
  • Didn't See That Coming: She thought she would be able to get the guy in charge of the Axel to take off the mark in her adventurer card by showing off her body. Not only is the very straight Luna in charge, she's also very unimpressed with how she betrayed her partner Aela and makes it clear Clemea will have to do a lot of work if she wants to lose the mark.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Shortly after she, Kyouya and Aqua get marks on their adventurer cards (on account of the mess they caused in Keel's dungeon), she overhears some gossip of Izuku and his party's feats, including how her former partner killed a Rookie Killer on her own, she decides to sneak away (snatching over half of Kyouya's money for the ride), hoping for the chance to join him.
