Pilots of Albegas

    As a whole
  • Color-Coded Characters: Daisaku is black, Hotaru is red and Tetsuya is blue. These colours are highlighted on their white pilot suits.
  • Kid Hero: Daisaku and Tetsuya are 17, while Hotaru is 16. They're also still in school.
  • Robot Master: They each created their respective robots, that would later become Albegas.
    Daisaku Enjōji

Daisaku Enjōji (円条寺 大作)

Voiced by: Toshio Furukawa

The pilot of the α robot and the main character. Daisaku is a 17 year old student at Aoba High School. He has bad grades and is often called a "ne'er do well" by his teachers.

  • Ambiguously Brown: His skin is noticibly darker than the other students of Aoba High.
  • Aww Look They Really Do Love Each Other: Jiro is a pain in the neck to Daisaku on most days, but he genuinely cares for his big brother.
  • Blue Is Heroic: His civilian outfit is a light blue jacket over a dark blue shirt.
  • Book Dumb: Daisaku's grades are abysmal, while Hotaru and Tetsuya fare much better.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: He shamelessly crawls into a girl's bed during a treasure hunt, and also constantly thinks naughty thoughts about Hotaru.
  • Class Clown: Daisaku cares more about making jokes than studying, such as suggesting his younger sister Natsuko is a Dellinger child adopted by humans.
  • The Everyman: As ordinary as they come. Before the events of the series, he was an idiotic Hormone-Addled Teenager and helped his family at their traditional Japanese painting shop.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: Daisaku has a passion for women as much as he has a passion for robots, with his specific fixation being on Hotaru. She's very busty, and he fantasizes about her breasts whenever he can.
  • Hot-Blooded: He looks like a buffoon on the outside, but he'll do whatever it takes to stop the Dellingers, even if it means endangering his own life. In the Grand Finale, he actually wipes out their entire race.
  • In the Blood: Like Daisaku, his younger brother Jiro is a complete idiot and reacted to the Dellinger's Alien Invasion by making jokes.
  • Male Frontal Nudity: At one point his loincloth slips off, and Zero covers her eyes, screaming that she saw something that she shouldn't have seen.
  • Tsundere: He clearly likes Hotaru, but acts tough to hide it from her.
    Hotaru Mizuki

Hotaru Mizuki (水木 ほたる)

Voiced by: Hiromi Tsuru

The pilot of the γ robot and the deutragonist of the anime. She is the 16 year old daughter of Prof. Mizuki and an honours student. She is skilled in robotics and tennis.

  • Academic Athlete: Apart from consistently keeping her grades up, Hotaru is one of the school's best tennis players.
  • The Ace: She's beautiful, a honours student, captain of the tennis team and Aoba High School's heart-throb.
  • Action Girl: She's the only female pilot of Albegas and as the pilot of γ robot, inflicts some of the nastiest blows against the Dellinger's forces.
  • Damsel in Distress: Out of the three main characters, Hotaru is the most likely to be lured into the Dellinger's traps, hypnotized or subject to horrific trauma.
  • Girly Girl with a Tomboy Streak: Sort of. Hotaru has a very feminine appearance but her hobbies push her into tomboy territory.
  • The Gunslinger: Hotaru is skilled at using guns. When she's not in her robot, it's her default weapon.
  • Leg Focus: In any scene of her playing tennis, the focus invariably goes to her dangerously short skirt and her legs.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Hotaru has long chest-nut brown hair that reaches her mid-back. She's the only girl on the team.
  • Miss Fanservice: Hotaru's breasts are constantly at focus at many points of the anime. She's notably more well endowed than her female peers and while playing tennis, wears a skirt that shows off her legs. Not to mention, her Damsel in Distress moments often have her at the mercy of the Dellingers.
  • Missing Mom: She lost her mom when she was very little. Due to losing her at a young age, she barely remembers her.
  • Only Sane Woman: While Daisaku is a bumbling idiot on the same level as his little brother, Hotaru is a graceful lady nicknamed the "Madonna" of her school.
  • Red Is Heroic: Out of the three Color-Coded Characters, Daisaku is black, Tetsuya is blue and Hotaru is red. She plays this straight and takes her mission seriously, wanting to be the hero her father raised her to be.
  • Shipper on Deck: Is all for her father moving on with his Sexy Secretary Saiko.
  • Tomboy: While her appearance is rather feminine (she doesn't even have a Tomboyish Ponytail), her idea of fun is playing tennis and messing around with Super Robots.
  • True Blue Femininity: Her civilian outfit consists of a white coat over a pale blue dress.
    Tetsuya Jin

Tetsuya Jin (神 哲也)

Voiced by: Hideyuki Hori

The pilot of the β robot. He is a 17 year old student at Aoba High and is an orphan. He has a sister, Ritsuko, but she's preoccupied with her work as a doctor in the Harunejima island. Tetsuya's skill is martial arts.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tetsuyajin.png

  • Beware the Quiet Ones: Because Tetsuya's a quiet guy, he's often belittled and seen as non-threatening. He actually knows a lot about martial arts and has beaten people to a pulp for getting on his nerves one too many times.
  • Bullying a Dragon: He was bullied a lot as a kid for being an orphan. A few beatings later thanks to his skill in martial arts, the bullying stopped.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His parents died in a space station accident when he was very young, and he was bullied for being an orphan. His only remaining blood relative is his sister, and even she's not around most of the time as she's a doctor on a remote island. As a result, he's a cold and nihilistic man.
  • Interspecies Romance: Tetsuya fell for Julia, a Dellinger woman. It never bothered him in their romance and he mourned her when she died.
  • The Lost Lenore: Julia. Oh god, Julia. She died happy, knowing that she didn't have to kill him as part of her mission, but it screwed him up.
  • The Stoic: Tetsuya is so used to suffering that nothing fazes him anymore. By the time the story starts he's adopted a nihilist view.
  • Trash of the Titans: Tetsuya lives in Aoba's dormitary, and his room is very messy. It fits with his nihilistic personality.

Friends and allies

    Goro Kumai

Goro Kumai

Voiced by: Kōzō Shioya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/goro_0.jpg
  • Butt-Monkey: Expect Goro to frequently be attacked, crippled and disrespected during the show. Also expect it all to be Played for Laughs.
  • Cool Kid-and-Loser Friendship: Goro is the "loser" to the three pilots of Albegas, who are famed and respected for their contributions against the Dellingers. Unlike them, he's often forgotten and treated like he doesn't exist.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?: Goro isn't a part of the Combining Mecha team, but he pilots the Gori-Robo, which helps the heroes fight the Dellingers. However, he's frequently ignored in favour of the three, and even the fan-made Albegas Encyclopedia doesn't mention him.
  • Fan Boy: Of Captain Harlock. He has a poster of him in his robot.
  • Sixth Ranger: Parodied. He aids the heroes in protecting the Earth against the forces of the Dellinger Empre, but he's regularly forgotten by everyone while the main three are showered with attention and treated like celebrities.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Goro has a phobia of whales.
    Dr. Mizuki

Dr. Mizuki

Voiced by: Eiji Kanie

The father of Hotaru and the creator of Albegas.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mizuki_83.png

  • Cool Old Guy: Everyone at Aoba High respects Dr. Mizuki's genius and looks up to him as a professor.
  • Good Parents: He was a single father to Hotaru for years and despite being pre-occupied with work, raised her well.
  • Happily Married: First to Kiriko (Hotaru's mother), and then to Saiko Asabuki.
  • Older and Wiser: He's a middle-aged man but the smartest character in the entire anime. Hotaru inherited her intelligence from him.
  • Robot Master: Albegas is one of his many creations as he's a Gadgeteer Genius.
  • The Smart Guy: He's a professor at Aoba High Academy and constructed Albegas out of three proto-robots.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: His genius led him to be elected the director of the Robot Center and hired as a professor at Aoba Gakuen University, and he wears glasses.
  • The Stoic: He's firm and emotionless, even with his assistant Saiko. Though that's likely because he knows the fate of the Earth depends on him and the kids.

    Saiko Asabuki

Saiko Asabuki

Voiced by: Chiyoko Kawashima

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/saiko_9.jpg

  • Happily Married: Saiko and Prof. Mizuki eventually get married after the war.
  • Likes Older Men: She fell in love with and eventually married her teacher.
  • May–December Romance: She was once a student of Dr. Mizuki, before she graduated and became his assistant.
  • Second Love: To Dr. Mizuki, after his first wife (Hotaru's mother) was killed by the Dellingers.
  • Sexy Secretary: She's an attractive woman who views Prof. Mizuki as a good-looking Silver Fox and pursues a romance with him.

Dellingers

    President Azos

President Azos (総統アザス)

Voiced by: Eijie Kanie

The President of the Dellingers, and the first commander of their Alien Invasion.
  • Big Bad: Because he wanted to use Earth as a power source, he launched an Alien Invasion, only for it to backfire when the humans responded with Albegas. The other Dellingers follow in his footsteps, after his death to fulfill his dream, and it only ends in further doom.
  • Evil Is Bigger: He is over 15 meters when sitting, and over 20 meters when standing.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Had Azos left Earth alone, Albegas wouldn't have entered a war with them and eventually destroyed the star Delan, causing the entire Dellinger race to perish.

    General Duston

General Duston (ダストン将軍 )

Voiced by: Masaharu Sato

The first General who's sent by the Dellingers to confront Earth. He's incompetent at his job.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/duston.jpg
  • Arch-Enemy: To Albegas, who he frequently fails to defeat. He dies when Albegas uses his hatred to it's advantage by luring him into a trap.
  • Cool Mask: He's always masked. In his fight with Albegas before his death, the robot damages it, chipping it away and revealing his true face.
  • General Ripper: He doesn't get along well with the other Generals because of his perfectionist attitude. He is willing to ally with them, but holds them to rigid standards, wanting to see his Albegas defeated at any cost.
  • Killed Off for Real: Episode 27. He's tricked into thinking he killed Albegas, but it turns out to be a trsp and the real Albegas kills him with it's Sanbai Sword attack.

    Commander Katastra

Commander Katastra

Voiced by: Kōji Totani

The son of a Space Pirate who joins the Dellingers as a Commander.

  • The Starscream: He joined the Dellingers because he believed they could lead him to greatness, but was disappointed with how the organization was more incompetent than he expected, and he unsuccessfully tried to take it over. He was betrayed, and then killed.

    Dime

Dime

Voiced by: Reizo Namoto

Dellinger's highest-ranked staff officer.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Both General Duston and Commander Katastra have a shared disdain for Dime and only work with him out of necessity.
  • Older and Wiser: He's one of the oldest Dellingers out there and often approached for his wisdom.
  • Really 700 Years Old: It's stated that he's lived for thousands of years and remembered every battle he's ever witnessed.
  • The Smart Guy: He is considered a "sage" of sorts because of his age and memory, and because of this he holds a high position in Dellinger's ranks.

    Mirror Zero

Mirror Zero

Voiced by: Satomi Mashima

  • Assassination Attempt: She tries to assassinate Daisaku at one point, but it backfires when she ends up seeing him without the loincloth, and she screams and covers her eyes.
  • Butt-Monkey: Like Goro, her most embaressing and humiliating moments are Played for Laughs.
  • Dark Action Girl: On top of being a spy who gathers information for the Dellingers, she conducts operations and pilots mechanical fighters herself.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She is the only female member of the Dellingers. The presence of her and Julia proves they're not a One-Gender Race.
  • Women Are Wiser: While most male Dellingers are hot-headed idiots that believe War Is Glorious, Zero takes a more pragmatic approach, believing in strategic vigilance and attacking from afar.

    President Bios

  • Interspecies Romance: She is an alien from the Dellinger Empire who falls in love with Tetsuya, a human.
  • Love Hurts: Her love for Tetsuya is a source of anguish as she knows since they're on opposing sides, it'll end badly. When she dies, she's glad she doesn't have to keep fighting anymore.
  • Token Good Teammate: It's a low bar, but she's one of the only Dellingers who isn't a complete asshole.
