Friends

    George

George (ジョルジュ)

Voiced by: Kuriko Komamura (Japanese), Manou Lubowski (German), Unknown (European Spanish), Julian Olivieri Orioles (Italian), Don Sanmaniego (Tagalog), (Arabic)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flanders_28.png
George
  • Canon Foreigner: Only existed in the anime.
  • I Owe You My Life: Not his life, but after Nello saved Paul from drowning in the river, George felt forever indebted to him, strove to repay him, and became his best friend. He often helps Nello deliver milk and protests for him when Hans accuses him of arson.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Georges is a playful boy who likes to muck around, but he adores Nello and sees his plight, and helps him speak to Alois when he's forbidden to. • Shipper on Deck: He supports Nello/Alois, and when her father bars Nello from seeing her, he keeps an eye for when Alois is in town so Nello can visit her without his interference.

Voiced by: Masako Sugaya (Japanese), Bernd Stephen (German), Unknown (European Spanish), Unknown (Italian), Christian Alvear (Tagalog), Unknown (Arabic)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/paul_65.png
Paul
  • Annoying Younger Sibling: Either by walking headfirst into danger or being ignorant, George is frustrated by having to keep an eye on him lest he cause more trouble. He also has a tendency to run his mouth.
Paul: George, Alois isn't dead, is she?
George: Nonsense! She can't be dead! (thumps Paul on the head)
    Paul: Owwwwww! That hurts!
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Paul has a tendency to slip into this - when him, George and Nello visit Alois, Paul asks him Alois knows about him. George thumps him and tells him he's a dumbass, because he's a complete stranger to her, unlike Nello.
  • Canon Foreigner: Paul wasn't in the original book.
  • Jive Turkey: Paul has a tendency to speak at a fast pace and be very blunt, which reflects his rural upbringing.

Cogez family

    As a whole
  • A Dog of Flanders (1975)
  • Abusive Parents: Baas constantly argues with Alois and tries to control her, forbids her from seeing Nello, sends her to a boarding school against her wishes and loses his temper very easily. In Alois' birthday episode, when the kids accidentally break the vase, Baas is so angry his shoulders start shaking as Alois cowers from him. It's also implied Alois' Delicate and Sickly illness was a result of the stress he brought on to her.
  • Adaptational Name Change: If their surname is "Cozets" like the anime implies, then this would be in play since in the original story it was "Cogez".
  • Good Parents: Unlike Baas, Ellina is understanding to her daughter and advocates for her to Baas, even if she's yelled at for it.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is their surname Cogez or Cozets? It was "Cogez" in the original story, but the anime pronounces it as "Ko-zet-su".
  • Nouveau Riche: Mr. Cogez was born in a poor family, but he worked hard enough to become a landowner and a businessman and created a fortune in one generation. Both Alois and her mother live comfortably thanks to him, but while they're Spoiled Sweet, he has rigid standards towards people (including his own daughter) and is extremely dismissive to the poor.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Alois has her mother's face, eyes, and blonde hair, but it also has a brownish tint to it, which she inherited from her dad.

    Alois Cogez

Alois Cogez (アロア・コゼツ)

Voiced by: Reiko Katsura (Japanese), Alana Horrigan (German), Luisita Soler (European Spanish), Rossells Acerbo (Italian), Roxanne Manato (Tagalog), Majd Zaza (Arabic)

Nello's best friend, a sweet, cheerful girl from a wealthy family and a heart of gold. She was born and raised in wealth, but doesn't let this affect how she views and treats people. She loves Nello's drawings and often asks him to draw for her. She wants her father to understand that Nello is a hard working boy and let him be friends, but he refuses and forbids her from seeing Nello.
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/alois_5.png
Alois Cogez
  • Age Lift: In the original story, Alois was 12 years old. Here, she is 8.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: A downplayed example. In one episode, Nello, Georges and Paul visit Alois, but when they knock the door, Alois' butler informs them that Alois doesn't want Nello to see her when she's Delicate and Sickly. She does, however, ask that he give her a drawing, because they're a source of joy for her, and Nello obliges and draws a beautiful landscape with flowers and a windmill. Even the butler is impressed and when he shows it to Alois, she loves it.
  • Culture Equals Costume: Subverted. Alois is Belgian, but her dress and headpiece are clearly Dutch. This is mainly because the showrunners got the Netherlands and Belgium conflated when doing research for the story.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Friendship example. Alois and Nello are best friends, but her father thinks it is embaressing for the daughter of the richest man in town to hang out with a "pauper", and the two get into arguements over it. Alois' father even threatens to send her out of the country if she doesn't listen to him.
  • Delicate and Sickly: While she's attending a prestigous school in England, she suddenly comes down with an illness and needs to be sent home to Belgium. While Baas and Ellina converse, Ellina suggests that the stress from Baas' abuse could have contributed to it. It's not stated what exactly she suffers from, but she's unable to move, needs to rest all day and is often pale-faced and sweating.
  • Dub Name Change:
    • Alois was Aneka in the German dub.
    • Alois was Hala in the Arabic dub.
  • Friend to All Living Things: She loves flowers and dogs, like Nello.
  • Innocent Blue Eyes: She has large blue eyes and is the kindest and friendliest of the family.
  • Plucky Girl: Even after her father formally bans her from seeing Nello, she still visits on him on the day of the art contest and tells him she is praying for him.
  • Spoiled Sweet: Despite being from a wealthy family Alois holds no snobbery towards Nello or the rest of the townsfolk; ironically it is her father who, despite being born poor, detests Nello and demands his daughter stay away from him.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Nello. She is repeatedly punished for hanging out with him and her father's abuse worsens whenever he catches them together, but she doesn't give up on him.
  • Uptown Girl: Alois is far more well off than Nello and the rest of the town, but she loves him anyway and considers him her best friend.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/flanders_16.png
Baas Cogez
  • Adaptational Name Change: His name was Nicholas Cogez in the original story.
  • Adaptational Job Change: In the original story, he was a miller. In the anime, he's a businessman/landowner and makes his fortune by employing serfs.

  • Berserk Button: Nello's presence alone, because Alois constantly defies his orders to meet him.
  • Dub Name Change: Pedro Téllez in the Spanish version.
  • Hypocrite: Alois's father hates Nello because he's from a poor family, but as shown in his flashback, he was also born a poor rural boy until he worked hard and made his fortune.
  • Inconsistent Spelling: Is it Baas or Barth? It's likely the former considering he's Belgian.
