Pulled this from Broken Base:

  • Not just homophobic comments either, Phil also commented that he doesn't think African Americans were saddened by the days of segregation. As expected, now people are calling out Phil for being racially and historically ignorant, with some wondering how Phil, a southern man himself, seems to not be fully aware of the oppression African American people went through in the very part of the country he resides in.
  • And now Phil was discovered to have encouraged men to marry underage high school women, something even conservatives have expressed shock over.
  • To clarify the preceding points: In regards to Phil's comments about black people, he is speaking about the blacks that he personally knew and worked with, not all blacks, all Jim Crow, or all pre-Civil Rights America. His quote, paraphrased: "I was poor, they were poor, we all worked together. To me, they seemed happy—they weren't singin' no blues or nothin' like that." - This troper personally believes it's hard to be racist against someone who you willingly, and repeatedly, work and workED with. Oh, and he has a black adopted grandson (Will Jr. - Willie's son), who he appears with on the show often, and who has been stated to be the one who has most-eagerly taken after the "redneck" side of the family, even more so than Willie's oldest, John Luke. In regards to his statements about marrying women young, he is implying that you should marry when you are BOTH young, because then you both "grow up" together and thus, form a stronger bond that way, as opposed to the promiscuity that plagues our culture today. YMMV on how marrying young will help - however you have to agree that a conservative redneck preacher man from the South would espouse and opine on the views of "traditional marriage." And finally, one must point out that it is possibly some insane troll logic on the part of A&E and GQ for causing this whole firestorm in the first place. To writ: A&E sends Phil to do an interview with GQ, an urbanite, metro, "yuppie" magazine with a decidedly liberal bent, as is a lot of the more cosmopolitan media. The GQ interviewer asks Phil many questions, ranging from religion to race to homosexuality. Phil, being a southern redneck, gives rather standard answers for that demographic. An important note: Phil's A&E "handler" was there at the interview the whole time, and did not say anything. The interview goes public, backlash ensues, and now we are here. I find it hard to believe that absolutely no one expected this. None of this, of course, covers the fact that he himself engaged in drinking, womanizing, and was abusive before his conversion to Christianity.

Nothing in there is Broken Base. It's all either people just piling on "well, he's racist" with no mention of people thinking that's fine, and then a horrible, horrible mess of natter and justifying edits that had to go.

There is more stuff of this nature showing up on the page with regards to Phil. Even with a link to a left wing website included. I'm not saying Phil's controversies shouldn't be addressed at all, it's just getting far too much weight on these pages and could stand to be trimmed back a little. After all, there's a general agreement on TV Tropes to use cautious editing when it comes to political topics.
