Describe the Trope:

Close, but more like...

"Bob thinks he'll get the promotion at work so he upgrades his car and takes his family out for a fancy dinner he can't yet afford, assuming he'll have the money later, only to find out Alice got the promotion."

"Charlie is at the school spelling bee and everyone is so sure he'll win, they throw a surprise party. He loses, and comes home to find the excited party guests, only to be really sad."

"Dana thinks Eli is going to propose to her, so she and Francine start preparing their night out to celebrate. Eli doesn't propose, but they already invited their friends".

Don't Celebrate Just Yet

We can never truly eradicate the coronavirus, but we can suppress its threat like influenza

^ Besides the title, not even close, my guy...

I'd suggest re-reading the trope, pretty sure that and Assumed Win are the ones you want.

^ Errrr, am I missing something?

Don't Celebrate Just Yet seems to be when the heroes accomplish something, but can't celebrate because plot is still happening. Completely different from what I'm referring to- an assumed event is prepared for in advance.

Assumed Win is close. Real close. But the description, at least, limits it to "character assumes they'll win and acts smug but they didn't win" and situations like that. Not "character throws huge party for their friend expecting their friend to be engaged, only to find out the friend was actually dumped".

I'd say it fits under trope flexibility, no reason to split into smug and non-smug character reactions.

But what I'm getting at is that a reaction is so short, so subtle. What I'm thinking of is characters spending money, or quitting work, or buying a new house, or something. An action that impacts their life. Not just...a moment of getting excited before being disappointed and jealous, but a major decision based on assuming the future, like spending money that doesn't exist in the belief you'll get an ton of money. Clark Griswald's swimming pool with the non-existent Christmas bonus money. Spongebob and Patrick planning Spongebob's promotion party before they learned Squidward got the promotion. Shit like that.

While this may be covered on Assumed Win, the description doesn't reflect that. The laconic is vague. Also, the trope only covers competitions.

^ Man, a change like this will change the very meaning of the trope. That's TRS territory.

^ Those guys have a point, the spirit between the two are similar. It's the letter that's problematic.

I agree with that, but if the current trope is one specific thing, we can't just change the definition to suit our desires. That isn't cool.

^ As long as nothing happens to the examples on the wicks (which I believe won't happen here), no harm done.

^ Yes harm done. People have been suspended for unilaterally changing the definition of a trope, and when it comes to things like this, a lot more consensus is needed than just the cleanup thread.

^ Which is the cleanup thread. Look, I'm done arguing, bring it there if you want, but it's not the place for it.
