Isn't it Wiki policy to use the official english names when those exist anyway? AFAIK he's not only being passive agressive, he's being wrong.
Plus "Lets add a note each time we use a name so 90% of the english speaking audience of this english wiki will know WTF we're talking about" is frankly idiotic.
Edited by GhilzPut in a revert and gave them a tap on the shoulder.
"Yup. That tasted purple."I took a look through their history and they've done it to several pages. I'll go ahead and clean these up since it is largely naming issues.
Muramasa got.I normally wouldn't bring this up, but Robo 4900 messaged me today demanding to know why I changed the names. It seems they do not understand what the issue was, is undoing all the edits, and refereed to my edits as; "bad edits".
Also I see some more passive aggressive edits: "HEY YOU. YES YOU. Don't change the quote above to "Step into the grand tour". Talk about it in the discussion page instead!"
This troper has not learned from last time.
Edited by keyblade333 Muramasa got.Since they kept doing it, a suspension is in order.
Go ahead and remove or tone down those comments.
Edited by Berrenta she/her | TRS needs your help! | Contributor of Trope ReportThe edits were massive, they might require mod roll back.
Muramasa got.Sure, which pages?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDragon Ball GT is where most of it occurred, but they also did edits on Dragon Ball GT, and Dragon Ball.
Muramasa got.Courtesy bump since this has slid off the front page and the three pages keyblade333 mentions could still use a mod revert when time permits, as the changes are too extensive for manual reversion.
EDITED TO ADD: Thanks to gjjones for reverting both Trivia.Dragon Ball GT and Manga.Dragon Ball; Anime.Dragon Ball GT still needs a revert, though, there are just too many changes to revert manually.
Edited by mlsmithcaTook care of the DBGT trivia page.
He/His/Him. No matter who you are, always Be Yourself.Anime.Dragon Ball GT has been manually reverted. Since what I know about Dragon Ball - or indeed any anime - would fit comfortably on a postage stamp, it's highly probable some good edits were thrown out with the bad. Editors who know more about the series than I do (i.e., anything at all) are encouraged to revert the good edits that aren't just complaining about using dub names.
Remember: official dubs don't necessarily take precedence over official subs.
I had a dog-themed avatar before it was cool.I'm not sure that's true in general or, if it is, that it applies to this particular series, even in "Last translation wins" terms. I haven't watched GT but I'm willing to bet they use the same English names used throughout Funimation's translation of the series.
My understanding has always been:
Official English dub or official manga translation, whichever came last > officially made subtitles if dub/translation is unavailable > fan translations, except for the title of the trope page itself (as applicable)
Edited by sgamer82A properly licenced subtitled work is an official translation. Dub/Sub/Manga, all are assumed to be equal in standing for the purposes of tvtropes.
Edit: You may have been noticing that sub translations get replaced by dub translations, because subtitles are easier to produce and often come out first. Audio tracks take a larger team and longer to produce, usually making them later translations. Edited by crazysamaritan Link to TRS threads in project mode here.
I recently did some editing on the YMMV for Dragon Ball GT. Troper Robo4900 posted this in the YMMV for it.
"HEY! Are you editing this to change the names? If you are, please read the following:
DON'T CHANGE THE NAMES TO DUB-ISMS, PLEASE. Dragon Ball in general falls massively under "Spell My Name With An S" syndrome, but it's especially bad for GT, where Funimation straight-up got a lot of stuff wrong for their dub. For example, the final villain has his name rendered in the subs as "Yi Xing Long", a romanisation of the Chinese words his name comes from(I realise Dragon Ball is Japanese, but the Evil Dragons all took their names from Chinese loan words), which you pronounce as "EE SHING LONG". It quite simply means "One Star Dragon" in English. Funimation decided to instead call him "Syn Shenron", which changes to "Omega Shenron" when he reaches his final form. Regardless of opinions on which is the better name, Yi Xing Long is more correct. Naturally, many dub fans wouldn't know what that means, so for every name that has a dub alternative, I've put a note that explains their dub name. This way, the article contents get to be correct, and no one is confused. Please don't ruin this. Thank you."
Not only is this passive aggressive, its silly to do that when we use the other dub names across the entire website. This is just policing and isn't an issue, the original name's are noted already across the website but typical policy is to use the dub names.
"DON'T CHANGE THE NAMES TO DUB-ISMS, FOR GOD'S SAKE!! The names used here, like Yi Xing Long or Majin Boo are the proper, sub terms, many of which are corroborated by the manga. Because many people are most familiar with the dubs, I've included notes that clarify this, so this means the correct names are here, but no one gets confused, because notes explain it all. And yet, people keep changing all these to their incorrect dub terms, and removing the notes entirely, leaving anyone unfamiliar with the dub terms confuse, and leaving this article covered in incorrect names. So, let's stop this cycle of crazy, and just use the original sub names, because anyone with half a brain cell can just click the note button, and find out "Oh, that's this character. Okay."
Their edit reasoning was: "Cleaned up all the dub-isms, and left a commented-out note at the start explaining this."
