Touhou

Mine would have been a jazz album of stage themes associated with midbosses, like Daiyousei, Momiji, Lily White and so on. The cover would have been a commissioned piece of the Touhou midbosses enjoying themselves at a jazz bar with a sign displaying the album title "Midbosses Night".

Hmm, I would probably make an international classic/traditional folk music album. It'd open with some tribal-ish remixes, something inspired by Maui Mallard's soundtrack, followed by a couple of tracks based on the sound of classic Indian music. After that it'd have a few tracks in the style of Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese traditional music, maybe something sounding like the tracks "Senpou Temple" and "Fountainhead Palace" from Sekiro. Then the album would round off with a couple of celtic-ish tracks, something like "The Yuyu" from the Brackenwood series, and finish with a remix or two influenced by Scandinavian folk music, I'd say the OST of Unravel is a good example in regards to the sound I have in mind in regards to that.

I’d do some tracks remixed/arranged in country music style. Classical country music a la Johnny Cash.

That's a really solid design, but I still can't help but think of a meowth when I look at it

I can see why (same conceptual basis), but I think the design isn't that reminiscent. Maybe if she had a koban, charm or coin on her head, maybe.

She looks like a VTuber for some reason.

A lot of Vtubers run on Moe Anthropomorphism and Cute Monster Girl as design paradigms. Since this is also the case for Touhou, I wouldn't be surprised if one seemed reminiscent of the other.

She looks like a V Tuber for some reason.

She specifically looks a fair amount like Nekomata Okayu, but there's not much in the way of traits that separate vtuber designs from standard character art? The art and shading aren't as detailed as you'd want, nor is she standing straight up with her hands at her sides

Touhou 18 demo is out. People are streaming it. New characters are:

Mike: (mee-kay) The cat from the CD. She's selling cards.
Takane: A yamawaro (mountain kappa) who has a design very reminiscent of Nitori. She's selling cards.
Sannyo: Not selling cards afaik.

Found the profiles.

Mike is a manekineko, but since she's calico instead of white she was ostracized by the others. She tried dyeing her fur before but now she's rebellious against the very idea of being a manekineko. This means her power is incomplete: she can invite money or customers but never both at once.

Takane is a yamawaro (mountain kappa), who have a huge rivalry with the kappa but are almost exactly the same. They are specialized for life in the forest though. While kappa are better at manufacturing, yamawaro are better at finance, so ideally they would work together. Kappa call yamawaro monkeys while yamawaro call kappa frogs (amphibians). Takane is kinda like the leader of the yamawaro, but it seems to be an informal position.

Sannyo is a mountain courtesan(?) who runs a popular casino on youkai mountain. She has the power to manipulate emotions with her tobacco smoke, but the example given is that she uses it to calm her customers down before they ruin themselves with gambling. It's a high-class joint and people gave her the friendly nickname of Dayuu.

Dayuu's not bad, but I'd say Mike definitely has the best design of the lot. Takane's just a worse Nitori

Is Mike supposed to be wearing shorts, though?

None of the music stood out to me

Danmaku is fine, though I note it feels like the most interesting ideas were reserved for the bosses' final spellcards

Game looks usually difficult and punishing, though high on bombs

The game seems to have some roguelike elements, in that you get a random selection of power ups after each boss (that you buy with money you collect) and some of them are ridiculous gamechanging things.

Never thought there'd be the day I could use this meme here.

The game definitely looks harder than usual. Takane's nonspells were basically Satono lite. And I'm sure one of her cards is taken out of Kanako's book.

The danmaku definitely looks better than HSIFS and WBAWC, at least in the early stages. Those two games had some pretty boring danmaku early on. That said, this game has some obsession with spiralling danmaku, huh?

Music seems...unmemorable. Not bad, just that they're standard ZUN fare at this point. Might take some listening to warm up to them.

Mike definitely has the best design among all three characters. Takane is just green Nitori (which is probably intentional, but still eh). Not sure what I think of Sannyo yet.

the only cards thats ive seen that i understood are the miracle mallet, which you can activate to clear a tiny space in front of you and get money for each bullet cleared, and youmu's ghost, which gives you one of her ghost options from IN
