Good work and all that, but doesn't this belong in the videogame forum? I mean Tohou is a video game after all. Or perhaps the new media forum, since this is sifting through fannon interpretations and whatnot.

Everything I am learning about Touhou chararacters is coming from this thread.

Nitori? Likes technology. Canon suggests she's shy, but fanon tends to have her as cheerful and friendly. I say 'tends to' because her personality hasn't really settled. People can't agree on her age, either, though she tends to be young. Occasionally counted as part of Marisa's harem, but only because she's one of her SA partners (I've yet to see anyone take it seriously).

Maybe Satori next?

@Clarste: I'm gonna be honest, I love your interpretation. But then, I also like Lemu's take... I wonder if they can be reconciled...

@Alk: Hmm, well. I didn't really consider the possibility of the New Media forum, but I didn't post it in the Video Games forum because, well, that forum seems more suited for actually talking about games themselves, and there are already two Touhou threads in it, one general one and one that distances itself from the original one by being solely about the games. I figured that if we're going to be talking about the characters only, then such a discussion would be more at home in the Anime and Manga forum.

@Scholastica & Nyktos: You guys give me the strength to carry on. T_T

I prefer the idea that Nitori is just shy around unfamiliar faces. She's the kind I'd expect to stalk a person with something technological she hasn't seen before, but everything the guy turns around to find out who's following him, she blushes and hides.

Another charcter I notice she hangs out with in fanworks is Momiji, whom she plays shogi with (there was also a H-doujin where she gave Momi a strange, uh, vibrating cucumber as a "prize" for beating her at Shogi, and Aya makes good use of the toy on the puppy wolf-tengu).

Yeah, Momiji's profile says she plays shougi with the kappa (plural). Since we've only got one kappa this far, Momiji and Nitori playing shougi and being friends became a popular scene.

Nitori's silly song videos are far and away the funniest and the cutest. So that silly version is the first thing that'll ever come to my mind when I think of her character.

Koakuma

Appearance:

Traits:

  • Mischievous, childish <=> Quiet, obedient
  • ...

Relationships:

  • Patchouli (Master and of course potential lover)

Write-up:
Koakuma. The little devil. A little devil. Little is known about her. Is she a person? Is she a species? Where did she come from, what does she do, and where does she go? Or they?

Koakuma was never given an official name until ZUN decided to accept the name given to the profile-less miniboss by fans, yet he never specified if he was treating her as an individual or species, and all that was said about the little devil is that she is mischievous. Which fandom, of course, disagrees with.

There is only one thing that's for certain: She is Patchouli's loyal servant. Given barely any official characterization, she is the quintessential satellite character whose characterization depends entirely on what the author needs. Perhaps she is mischievous. Perhaps she manages to combine her mischievous nature perfectly with her obedience to her master, plays pranks in her off-time, or likes to interpret orders too literally. Perhaps her nature as a librarian lends itself to a quiet personality. Was she adopted by Patchouli, or summoned, or perhaps she simply works at the mansion? Who is she, and what is her purpose?

In the end, the only one who holds the answers to these questions, is you.

Satori Komeiji

Appearance/Voice: That DJ Makes The Depths Of The Earth Quake, Satori, The Girl Who Knew Too Much

Traits:

Relationships:

  • Orin, Utsuho ("pets")
  • Koishi (sister)

Tentative write-up:
Satori was born as a Satori. This blessed her with the innate ability to read people's minds, leaving her shunned and hated by everyone around her. Broken and tired of the abuse, she spends most of the time in her mansion with her legion of pets, who adore her exactly for her ability to understand their needs.

Despite having only two traits listed at this point, Satori is a character full of potential. She can read thoughts and feelings and even memories. She is a loner desiring love. She is broken and has all reason to. She has many characters surrounding her, giving her ample potential for interaction.

Let's examine her carefully, shall we?

Now here's an interesting character! There's a whole slew of Komeiji Family doujins by Happy Flame Time. I'd be hard-pressed to pick out a single recommendation out of them all, but I'd gladly try to do it if anyone's interested. One of them had an interesting portrayal of her as a doting parent-type who got extremely worried when Orin and Utsuho returned with scraped knees from playing at the Hakurei Shrine. Then there's the portrayal IOSYS gave her in the songs linked above, the first of which is partially a story-telling portion of the album which has her as a DJ who uses her mindreading abilities to know exactly what songs the audience desires, and eventually pushes them towards the second song, constantly pleading "This song is okay, right!?" The song ends up being a pretty sad one about her life as a shunned person. I like it a lot and I don't know, why.

So yeah! Satori. Let's give her a big old hug.

Heh, Crazy Cat Lady. Never thought of that.

Right, Satori. I always picture her as a kind of Patchouli-type; introverted, quiet, a bit dark, but very nice to her pets. I have this theory that the reason why she's so loving with her pets is because they have simpler minds to read.

Oh yeah, I forgot the "similar characters" line this time. Patchouli does seem similar - both are shut-ins, subdued, but are said to long for love. And have purple hair and B eyes.

Wait, the "simpler minds to read" theory makes no sense. It's not like she has any problems reading people; the fact that she can is her whole curse!

Satori is a fun character. Her mind reading has a lot of possibilities for interesting plots, she's surrounded by other interesting characters, and her design is awesome. Like her theme, too.

Personality wise, canon had her as a fairly normal person. Maybe a bit conservative by Gensoukyou standards, but pretty normal by our's.

Fanon in this case doesn't really have distinct different interpretations  *

as much as variations in which traits are emphasized. Works that focus on her tend to emphasize her naivety and ignorance of the outside world. Ones that focus on Orin and Okuu tend to play up the 'kind and loving master' bit. Comedies will play up the 'normal' part, Having her as a straight man.

Her design is awesome indeed... Though she's a great example of how one has to differentiate "design" from "drawing", because dear god her official ZUN image is one of the most horrible things ever.

Speaking of which, she has those half-closed eyes in it, too, which might be a basis for emotionlessness. Though of course, "emotionless" pretty much means "depressed" in Anime&Manga-Land, so that's fitting, too.

Speaking further of pictures, how about a little... change to the rules...

Anyone's welcome to spam images of the characters being discussed as much as they like. Images, videos, songs, anything they like. Just so long as it's about the current character.

Sound good?

Satori's a fun character to play with. She can do Psycho Mantis routines, reacts extremely to Merlin's trumpet (See also: Energetic Satorin), and is usually played as a deadpan or depressed character.

I was the one who added her to Crazy Cat Lady shortly after the game came out, so I think my stance on that aspect should be obvious.

Anyway, while she does have half-closed eyes in her portrait, she's actually quite emotive and smiles a lot, so I'd completely disagree with Emotionless Girl or being depressed or anything. Heck, even her default expression is more of a disdainful frown than any kind of emotionlessness. If anything, her eyes give me the impression of an Eyes Always Shut mischievous personality. She knows she makes people uncomfortable, and enjoys that. Whether or not that's a defensive adaptation is up to interpretation.

All that said, I feel like she's pretty happy as a loner weirdo. I'd say she's a Strange Girl if that trope could make up its mind about what it is. Animals are fond of her, but she's not particularly fond of animals. Not that she hates them or anything, but she doesn't pay much attention to them either. She lets them do whatever they like without checking in on her or her checking on them, which is pretty much why Subterranean Animism happened. I could you could say she's an independent person who believes others should be independent as well, but probably in less of a philosophical sense so much as a practical sense.

Which of course means that she's not very close to anyone, probably not even her sister. I suppose that limits story options involving her, or perhaps gives them a certain kind of freedom. She's just a loner by nature, and has no desire to trouble herself for others. I kind of resent the woobie-fication of a strong independent character implicit in implying that loner = lonely, so I'm going to have to reject that.

I like to think of Satori as having grown used to being a loner, but she still welcomes any company if she can have some.

I wonder which way she would roll though, would she be unruffled if she detected naughty thoughts? Would she get angry and declare you a pervert? Would she play along, mockingly scold you, get embarassed or flustered, or what?
