Okay, fine, what, then, Atomic Nut? What act do you deem worthy of the Gatling Roller?

One of the older posts desribes Lai Dame as a skirmish but Lorraine jumped three grades because of it. I think tis sounds more like a full on series of battle to me.

For starters, stop pestering about something we haven't fully acquired yet. Do not sell the bear's skin before hunting it.

And two, you're too obsessed with it.

Edit: He started, Spain Sun.

I am not obsessed, I'm just Goal-Oriented! Which some would say is fancy-talk for obsessed, and they might be right.

Also, what if the hypothetical bear doesn't have any skin?

No further comment on this matter.

Anyhow, I put Sune's story up on the troperion page. Thoughts?

Also, Flint didn't get the slang of Warp Razor, methinks.

"Any reason not to use this miracle device then? Don't tell me you want to build dramatic tension."

... She was speaking about using a FTL to create a Negative Space Wedgie, that was the Warp Razor, no special funky device that she was saving.

Oh, just colorful language usage, he knows it's nothing miraculous. He was inquiring what the negative consequences would be because you were making this sound pretty good overall.

Unrelatedly, your offhand mention of engine overclocking potential probably piqued his interest.

Tiger (actually a childhood nickname, real name's Dorian) still lives on Earth.

That was towards the end of his tour on Aeris, probably coming up on the Battle of Valentown, so around three years ago.

Speaking of upgrades, though, when do we get to spend the cash from our first mission, Hydrall?

Oh, and Spain, here's the theme we were talking about:

  • Tonight I'm firing the blackened sky
  • Blazing the past as I burn the future into being
  • Allies and enemies, watching them both die
  • As I spiral crazily without truly seeing

  • How long can I keep this going for?
  • Encased in this heart of steel I live or die
  • My being balanced on the edge of a razor
  • Is this my real enemy that I'm fighting tonight?

  • Dancing a path of fire across stars far from home
  • I can feel my metal feet moving across the stage
  • Encased in this heart of steel I fear I'm alone
  • Until I feel the beat of another's trepidation and rage

  • Ally or enemy? I don't even care
  • I'll throw my allegiance to the curb just to see you
  • Will you answer my feelings, or do I not dare?
  • Tonight our souls are entwined for even an hour

  • Let's leave this place a little better than we were
  • You and I will go in peace, far from this hell
  • Let's meet again in better a circumstance without fear
  • And build a new future from bricks of spent shells

And here's a second draft:

  • Tonight I'm blazing a path through the blackened sky
  • Flaming the past, the future's burning into being
  • Allies and enemies, watching them both die
  • I spiral crazily without truly seeing

  • Can I see?
  • How long?

  • How much longer can I keep this going for?
  • Encased in this heart of steel I live or die
  • My being unbalanced on the edge of a razor
  • Is this my real enemy I'm fighting tonight?

  • Tonight
  • Burns bright

  • Dancing a path of flame across distant stars
  • I feel my metal feet tripping on the stage
  • In this heart of steel I fear I'm alone
  • But I feel another's beat of trepidation and rage

  • Can I feel?
  • For you?

  • Ally or enemy? I don't even care
  • I'll shed my allegiance just to see you
  • Will you answer my heart, or do I not dare?
  • So briefly our souls are entwined in two

  • Is this love?
  • Or hate?

  • Let's leave this place a little better than we were
  • In peace we'll go far from this hell
  • Let's find a better circumstance without fear
  • And build a new future from bricks of spent shells

  • Let it burn
  • The past away
  • Away

Eridani System - 2975 AD

Three Quicksilvers navigated through the larger asteroids which made up most of the Ulster debris belt.

"Don't get too far ahead, Crow 3. Remember, intelligence said the Centauri are mostly using Stalkers. They'll pick you off before you even realize your radar's jammed."

"They'll have a hell of a time aiming at me between the rocks, if they can even tell the difference between our frames and the rest of the junk out here."

"That's the idea rookie, so quit charging forward before they notice some of the rocks have engines."

"Knock it off with the rookie talk, I've been flying with you for two years now."

"And you still haven't grown up."

"Crow Leader to wingmen, put a lid on the chatter. You want the enemy tipped off by your squabbling? Commence radio silence. And slow down... rookie."

Kennedy Quinn's indignant sigh was cut short as she switched off the comm. Still, she obeyed her flight lead and stopped her frame's engine, letting her momentum carry the Quicksilver towards the mission's designated coordinates. This time, she promised herself. This time she'd show them what she was really capable of. Maybe an enemy ace would be among the group, or surprise reinforcements would arrive at just the wrong time. All hope would seem lost until Crow 3 came to the rescue; blasting away everything in her path and single handedly saving the day. Of course she'd told herself the same thing the other sixty-two times she'd been sent out with her squadron, usually without so much as a blip on the radar by the time they'd been called back to The Partholon, their cruiser.

Nearing the space where Centuarian scouts had been detected, Kennedy had to do a double take to believe what she was seeing. There were Stalkers alright, three of them at least; but these weren't the models normally found in the midst of battle. Most obviously the frames were too large, at least two meters taller than they should have been. Checking the radar, all three visible targets were clearly displayed, taking away the stealth oriented frame's greatest asset. This wasn't just another let down of a mission, it was down right insulting. Were the Centauri even trying?

The closest Stalker's targeting box lit up on Kennedy's HUD along with a message from the Squad Leader.

Fire on three.

Kennedy readied her frame's railgun as she drifted ever closer to the enemy's position.

Two. The instructions counted down. One.

Crow squadron unleashed as one unit, all three shots knocking their drifting frames backwards. The doomed Stalker didn't have time to turn before it was pierced by the rounds, taking two hits in the torso and the last in the frame's head. Gaping holes remained in the dark blue armor where it had been struck and the frame floated gently in a spin, like someone doing a backflip in slow motion.

"Crow team engage," Yun Long's voice crackled over the comm. "Move fast, get in close."

Kennedy was already bearing down on the next target as it reacted to the Federation pilots' sudden appearance. The Stalkers, at least the regular ones, operated best at long range; the versatile Quicksilvers could tear them apart in melee combat.

"These are relics!" Complained Carina Decker, Crow 2. "Mark Twos at best, did they pull them out of a museum?" Her Quicksilver raised its gun again, firing two rapid shots at the furthest Stalker; the first going wide while the second knocked the Centauri's sniper rifle from its grip. "They aren't even fitted them with upgraded jammers, why not paint them neon orange too?"

Kennedy shared Carina's sentiment, though not the indepth knowledge. Her frame had nearly closed the gap when the Stalker fired its rifle, narrowly missing as Kennedy swung evasively to the right.

"Crow 3, you get shot down here and I swear we'll leave you behind from the embarrasment."

"Didn't scratch me!" Kennedy shouted back, beratting herself for the mistake, the old frames were quicker than they looked. Empty as the threat had been, she knew she'd never live down even slight damage from combat this easy.

Kennedy veered down and to the left, abandoning her plan for close combat. She quickly angled the Quicksilver's shoulder cannon, firing the moment the target lock signal buzzed. A green shock of light flashed between the combating frames as the cannon fired, catching the Stalker between its torso and left leg and severing the damaged limb. The Centaurian frame veered out of control, impacting on a large, nearby asteroid where it was consumed in a bright explosion.

"How's that, then?" Kennedy exalted over the comm, sweeping her frame around in an arc to approach her two allies. Just as they came into view, Yun connected with the third enemy. Smashing his sword into the center of the Stalker, Yun drove the blade all the way through the frame, then swung his Quicksilver by the sword's hilt, kicking the sparking frame in the head to knock it free of his weapon.

"Nice one, leader." Carina congratulated.

"Oh, come on!" Kennedy complained. "Did you even see my kill?"

"Crow Leader to Partholon, enemies neutralized. Requesting new orders, over." Moments passed with no reply. "Repeat, Crow Team reporting, do you copy Partholon?"

"Did they get bored already?" Kennedy activated her long range sensors, scanning in the direction they'd left the carrier from. "There's no- wait! Incoming craft at-"

The words weren't nearly fast enough to warn the others as a ship bore down on them, its twin Mythril powered engines glowing. The make was Federation and easily twice the Partholon's size. Asteroids bounced off the hull as the ship careened through thes field, the knicks and dents from the debris nothing compared to blasted areas all over its surface. One of the engines visibly shuddered, smoke billowing out as several small detonations went off.

"Lieutenant Wayne Harker to Crow Team," came an unfamiliar voice over the radio. "I'm taking command of your unit."

"Where's the Partholon? What's going on?" Kennedy demanded.

"Quiet, Crow 3." Yun reprimanded her. "Acknowledged, Lieutenant Harker, this is Crow Lea- Crow 1, ready to follow new orders."

As the damaged battle carrier drifted past, a frame launched itself from a blown out hanger. The design was similar to the Quicksilvers, though larger and with the normal shoulder cannon replaced by what looked like two oversized railguns stuck together. The paintscheme was unique, a series of green and brown stripes lined the torso, while the unit's head was red and green with two long white fangs detailed on either side of the face.

"An Ace," Carina sent the message privately to Kennedy. "Show some respect."

"Follow me, Crows." Harker barked over the channel. "Viper to Dauntless," he continued, apparently relaying the message to the ship. "Transport complete, you can go on back to the others now."

"zz-cknowled-zz Viper." Came the garbled reply. "Ret-zzz-ing zzzz-ious loca-z-ion." The ship began a slow arc, more and more rocks bouncing off as it changed direction.

"What's going on?" Kennedy demanded again, moving towards Harker's frame as it started off through the debris field.

"Kid, I can see why they sent you out here," The ace's tone was blunt, unimpressed. "If it'll shut you up, your little ship got ambushed about the time you took care of the garbage here." Kennedy tried to interject at that, even Yun grunted in surprise. "The Cents had a couple destroyers lying in wait, started firing as soon as you engaged. Fortunate for your guys my boys on the Dauntless were already on the way. Ships are no match for frames when they're in the right hands and my squad's one of the best."

"If the battle's back with our ship we should turn around." Carina stated. "Why lead us in the opposite direction?"

"Look I told you, those Cents back there are as good as dead. You three were seperated from your ship so the destroyers could take it out, but I'm thinking it's a double feint. When those scrap Mark II's you laid out stopped their jamming we got a blip further ahead, looked like there was another ship this way, I had the Dauntless bust me through. Thinking it's a transport full of Mythril, if we can capture that it'll be worth more than a fleet of your carriers. Course it could be nothing, why I came out solo. You're just along for the ride, close as you were to the target."

The four frames raced through the asteroid field, the Quicksilvers' engines taxing to keep pace with Harker.

"We should be coming up on them in a click, so two more things. Number one is, I expect whatever's out here having a better escort than the junk you dealt with. I've got a surprise to even the odds a bit, on my mark cut all sensors. Cameras, comm, every damn outside source. Count down from five then switch back on. Number two, me and my Magnetite will handle the ship, keep them making an emergency jump. You guys sweep up whatever frames they've got, shouldn't be too hard if the surprise works. Got it?"

"Roger, Viper." Yun responded dutifully.

"You other two on the same page?" Harker demanded.

"Yes."

"Got it." Kennedy echoed.

"You'd better, here we go." The ace's frame took a sudden dive, plunging through a thicket of debris. As Crow team followed suit, the order came. "Mark."

Kennedy got just a glimpse of the scene they'd headed into before cutting her frame off from all exterior senses. There was a ship, obviously Centaurian by design. It looked far too small to be carting Mythril or even a sizable compliment of frames, of which she'd only caught one in view. Another Stalker, it was steamlined compared to the earlier ones, almost the same size as the Quicksilvers. Its jamming was clearly superior as well, Kennedy hadn't caught a flicker on her radar before Harker's sudden descent.

Counting down, the Quicksilver shuddered at 'two' from some sort of shockwave blasting through it. Internal scanners didn't register any damage, but the final second of waiting was nearly too much for Kennedy to bear.

Jimmy's memoirs will be put up when each section is finished. First i actually need to finish the first part, the Lai Dame Campaign. This is when Jimmy, Lorraine, and our lost friend Annabel Vermillion Lee first met each other. Though at the time they were in different regiments or acting as independent commands.

Perhaps the terms of a truce or temporary ceasefire somewhere along the lines stipulated that higher than Anti-Ship class weaponry is not allowed to be used against nonmilitary planetary targets, in interest of allowing at least some people to survive the war? After all, neither side is looking for genocide, since the Feds want reunification and the Cents want to be left alone.

Admittedly, these rules might also be in place to be broken for dramatic effect.
